Developing: On September 12's "View" co-host Whoopi Goldberg inquired of Senator John McCain, "do you want me to be a slave?"
[EDITOR'S NOTE: Working now from the actual tape instead of notes, the question was "Do I have to be worried about becoming a slave again?"]
The question was spurned by the Senator's stance on Roe v. Wade. When McCain answered he supports judges who support the original intent of the Constitution, Whoopi drew a slavery comparison.
More details and a video to be added shortly.

September 12, 2008 - 10:55 ET by MeanderingNo we don't want her to be a slave, she's more than welcome to go back and live in Africa, her homeland. I am not racist, but when people say stupid things, you are going to get stupid answers. I heard on the radio Barbara Walters asking McCain some pretty biased questions. I really can't believe anyone with a brain watches this show. Hey, but keep up the smears and mud throwing, its getting the liberals more dirty than those they are slinging mud at.

September 12, 2008 - 11:21 ET by Indiana JoeWell, Cool, it seems like a lot of blacks claim Africa as "homeland" when it suits them to claim America, as a country, is racist.
Tell the truth, from the headline, I thought that was the "slave" reference. Was surprised to read it was about abortion. That query from a black woman is a double-edged sword.

September 12, 2008 - 11:00 ET by mcg0125If McCain was smart, he would reply that she needs to look at her own party's history of supporting slavery, Jim Crow laws, the KKK, and their opposition to the Civil Rights movement.
Maybe Whoopi should go talk to "Sheets" Byrd about the history of the Democratic Party and racism. The senior senator is well learned and versed in those issues.

Actually, I think Whoppi
September 12, 2008 - 11:42 ET by dscottActually, I think Whoppi made a very ironic statement. Whoppi was thinking on the Supreme Court Roe v Wade decision to allow abortion even though it is not expressly written but instead tripped herself up by referring to slavery in which the Supreme Court decision keeping it legal, the Dread Scott case. Whoppi you need to pay better attention to those mixed analogies. We literally fought a civil war initiated by a Supreme Court decision. You liberals play a little too loose with the facts to suit me.

To Whoopi Goldberg, Constitutional Scholar...
September 12, 2008 - 11:10 ET by on-the-rockscontrary to your years of intense study of the United States Constitution, the original intent of the Constitution was not to endorse slavery. In my non-lawyer mind, slavery is a violation of the Equal Protection clause.
Some of our founders and/or some of those at the Constitutional Convention knew in their hearts that slavery was wrong, but they also knew they had to make compromises to "capture that moment in time". All problems could not be dealt with at the same time.
They left us a framework by which we could change the Constitution, but not too easily. The 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments were designed to "fill the gaps in the original".
When Libs ask such hyperbolic questions and make similar remarks, it only entertains "their amen chorus", no one learns anything.

I hope McCain hit that
September 12, 2008 - 11:14 ET by Free ThinkerI hope McCain hit that softball out of the park. The correct answer is that as our society has evolved we have made amendments to the constitution. That is the way the founding fathers designed it. It was not intended to be a document to be changed by the opinion of a judge or a few judges together. Slavery was banned by the people in Amendment 13. So unless McCain is advocating changes that amendment to the constitution Whoopi's question is foolish.
What an insult!
September 12, 2008 - 11:21 ET by SickofLibsI wish McCain would have stood up and said "Thanks, but on that note I must leave now." He's not getting any votes from that audience anyway.
Whoopi, do YOU want to be a slave?
September 12, 2008 - 11:26 ET by CobraManWhoopi, do YOU want to be a slave? That’s what will eventually occur of Presidents continue to appoint judges who believe that the Constitution is a “living document” that can be changed or ignored simply by judicial fiat.
Amendment 13: "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction."
This is the section that protects us all for indentured service. I would hope that you want this section to remain as part of the supreme law of the land and that you support judges who feel the same way.

Ahem, you apparently have never been divorced or known someone who had gone through divorce. The Law is nothing more than a collection of words to be parsed, redefined and juggled as the judge sees fit. It's called judicial tyranny. Some of the worst offenders of justice sit BEHIND the bench not in front of it.
