Behar: Sarandon and Robbins 'Most Patriotic Americans'

Photo of Justin McCarthy.

Joy Behar finds actors and hard left activists Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon "two of the most patriotic Americans that we have in the media." On the May 29 edition of "The View" the panel discussed Susan Sarandon’s threat to leave the United States if John McCain is elected president. The following Monday, June 2, Whoopi Goldberg read Sarandon’s response to the controversy.

In her letter to "The View" Sarandon claimed her words have been "morphed into something other than intended." Sarandon bizarrely added she simply would feel unsafe in New York City because of McCain’s "statements regarding foreign policy and his volatile temper."

After Goldberg read in Sarandon’s letter that she "has faith in the American people," Joy Behar called Sarandon and longtime partner Tim Robbins "two of the most patriotic Americans that we have in the media" because "they stuck their neck out in the beginning when it was very unpopular to speak out against the war and the Bush administration."

ABC employee Joy Behar must have missed a story from her own network at the time when "it was very unpopular." In April 2003, Peter Jennings and Jim Wooten smeared those who speak out against Robbins and Sarandon as "McCarthyites."

Behar then verified Sarandon’s charge that in McCain’s American New York will no longer be safe adding "there is a certain amount of fear" raised the specter of a war with Iran and felt "we would become a target even more."

The entire transcript is below.

WHOOPI GOLDBERG: The other day we were talking about Susan Sarandon saying that she’d consider moving out of the country if McCain was elected. Now it turns out she was watching us and she wrote us a letter, which I had to have them write in very big letters because I can’t read it otherwise. It says "hey girls I came up over coffee in your ‘Hot Topics’ segment. I want to clarify a quote that has been repeated and morphed into something other than intended. If I were to entertain the notion of leaving my country, it’s because I believe under McCain it would be significantly more dangerous to live in New York City with my family because of his statements regarding foreign policy and his volatile temper not because I would ever hate my country. Continued on next card"- Oh. [laughter] "If discontent at the present leadership were motivated to leave, I would have left a long time ago, but instead, it’s every citizen’s duty and right under the Constitution to express their discontent. That’s called democracy. As I said in the full quote, this election is a critical one. I also said I have faith in the American people. Love, Susan."

JOY BEHAR: Yeah. Well, Susan and her husband Tim Robbins are two of the most patriotic Americans that we have in the media. And they stuck their neck out in the beginning when it was very unpopular to speak out against the war and against the Bush administration. I’m just saying that for Susan. And I think she was, you know, in a fit, pique, yeah maybe frustration. Well, so there is a certain amount of fear that you have that if someone gets into office who doesn’t have the right foreign policy and does insist these wars keep going, and Iran is next and this and that, that we would become a target even more. That’s why she said she wants to move away.

Gag! Even the title of

Gag!

Even the title of this thread got me heaving.

I'm afraid any nutritional value from my lunch would have been distributed suddenly across my key-board if I'd read the entire thing.

Howdy Helen S...

Barf-bag time indeed, I read the whole thing today...most days I can't get though all of Joy's mindless dribble.

I just shake my head in pure disgust anymore.

BT, Either she, like

BT,

Either she, like Olbermann, throws these off-the-chart liberal bombs just to get a reaction, or she's so far out there that she's disconnected from any semblance of reality, sanity, or normal everyday life in America.

Chris...it may be both, but

Chris...it may be both, but I feel she is more in line with the latter part of you post...

She is so pathetic...I just can't be bothered to get mad anymore.

Well, not today anyway....lol.

BT, I'm with you there. It's

BT,

I'm with you there. It's getting harder and harder to get mad over incendiary comments from such an obviously whacked out person, like Behar.

BT and Chris

Don't you think she lives in such an insular world with her own "type" that they have no idea right minded people are out in the world? sarandon and robbins leaving would be great...remember when alec baldwin said he would leave? They are all such a joke.

Joy Behar and Susan Sarandon

Joy, you and Susan Sarandon, Tim Robbins,

Alec Baldwin, and any other celebrity that want

to leave the country ------GO NOW, DO NOT

LET THE DOOR HIT YOU, WHERE IT

COUNTS.  Bye-bye, and don't come back.

Well, isn't that typical?

Sarandon seems to have very concisely summed up the far-left version of "patriotism", which is:

If we don't get our way, then this country sucks!

Quite a far different view of the US than most conservatives have, wouldn't you agree?

Their view matches my view

Their view matches my view surprisingly closely:

If you don't like the next president or anything else about this country, leave!

I couldn't have said it better! (my only complaint is that they seldom follow through.  All whining and no action)

"Cry havoc and let slip the dogs of war"  - Shakespeare

The Liberal Drumbeat

I love how liberals have already started the drumbeat of "McCain will be dangerous for the US".  Should a Republican be elected in November I hope we don't have four (eight?) more years of their persistent badmouthing of the POTUS. It's really boorish.

Cable Access Quality!

I've never seen (or would never admit) watching this show.  But from reading the numerous posts attributed to Ms. Behar, it would seem that this show has no better quality than the numerous late night free cable access programs where people talk about having been picked up by aliens, discuss the finer aspects of professional wrestling, etc.

right on!

I don't watch it, but from all the posts and threads it's obvious what the show is like and I think you really nailed it - public access TV! LOL

Especially when you consider that all the talking heads are either industry non-entities or (way far) has-beens. Kelly Bundy's show would at least be preferable if you turned down the volumn - eye candy.

Not A Good Show

I've watched this show a few times when they've had interesting guests.  Unfortunately the women on this show are nothing more than uninformed, gossipy harridans.  They try to make themselves look intelligent but they don't have a clue.  I'd like to know who watches it on a regular basis.

Please send your condolences

gpc: I'd like to know who watches it on a regular basis.

That would be diligent Newsbuster Justin McCarthy.

True

LOL, yes.  But he's not the target audience for their sponsors.  (At least I hope he's not making purchasing decisions about products that make him feel fresher at his time of the month).

I call Jonah Goldberg to the stand...

"What confused the left then and now about American conservatism is that love and support for one's country do not necessarily put one on the road to fascism.  Patriotism is not the same thing as extreme nationalism or fascism.  The Nazis killed a great many German patriots whose love of their homeland was deep and profound.  In a sense, one of the Jews' greatest offenses was that they were patriotic Germans.  It was in the 1960's that the left convinced itself that there is something fascistic about patriotism and something perversely 'patriotic' about running down America.  Anti-Americanism- a stand-in for hatred of Western civilization-became the stuff of sophisticates and intellectuals as never before.  Flag burners became the truest 'patriots' because dissent-not just from partisan politics, but from the American project itself-became the highest virtue.  In 2003 the professor at Columbia who hoped America would face 'a million Mogadishus' is a patriot in the eyes of the left.  But Americans eager to maintain limited government-of all things!-are somehow creeping fascists."

Jonah Golberg, excerpted from Liberal Fascism, pg. 197

Another question for Sarandon

re: "If I were to entertain the notion of leaving my country, it’s because I believe under McCain it would be significantly more dangerous to live in New York City with my family because of his statements regarding foreign policy"

How do you explain the fact that there has not been a terrorist attack on American soil since 9/11/01? Are you suggesting that you've actually felt safe living in NYC under George W. Bush? Hmm. ??

And on a lighter note, can't Sarandon just move out West somewhere if she's worried about how dangerous it would be in NYC?

Sarandon and Robbins are not patriotic. They are self-absorbed, anti-American leftists who have no appreciation for what it means to love one's country. Taking full advantage of the 1st Amendment does not a patriot make, no more than using a gun to commit a crime makes the perpetrator a patriot because they are taking full advantage of the 2nd Amendment.

Queen... Hear! Hear! I

Queen...

Hear! Hear!

I wanted to point out her absurd comment about not feeling safer in NY or would feel less safe in NY but thought...what is the use...these leftists are filled with nothing but hatred for this country as long as someone with an 'R' behind their name is in charge and protecting their arses, along with our great military sacrificing for these creatures....ungrateful selfish ba$tard$ all...with zilch for brains as far as I am concerned.

Blohar's pick for Patriots of the Year

The only reason Islamomaniacs have not reduced Manhattan - and the View's studio - to ashes is not because they wouldn't love to - its because foreign policy and heightened vigilance have thwarted them so far...

...both things Blohar detests. And PS, Blohar, these two commies are not 'in the media' - they're just actors. Movies are not real life, as any 5 yr old knows.

If those two dirt bags are

If those two dirt bags are our "most patriotic", I'd sure hate to see the least patriotic!

HEY GARY...

They are hiding in plain site. Have you watched the MSM? NBC, MSNBC, CNN, NYT, & others. Have you seen those who surround Obama & who he has been friends with for 20 years? These are some of the least patriotic people you will see, & they are in plain site.

"...it's still We The People, Right?"  Megadeth

Actually, the least

Actually, the least patriotic celebrity was found to be Commie McStalinpants, host of "Marxism and You: A Daily Affirmation" on local access Channel 32 in the sleepy town of Piedmont, CA.

You knew this was coming

One brain dead halfwit commenting on another flat liner.  I have already put a reminder in my calendar for Wednesday 11/5 to be on the lookout for live video of these kooks boarding their CO2 spewing Gulfstream at LAX on their way to somewhere.  I sure hope they have room onboard for the rest of the assorted band of Hollyweird lunatics like Penn, Streisand, and Asner.

And what about Iran?

..and Iran is next and this and that, that we would become a target even more.

So Joy, with out her realizing it, admits that Iran is belligerent and we are in their sites.

And you want a President that will site down and talk with Imadinnerjacket without preconditions while they go full bore on their enrichment program?

"...in the beginning when

"...in the beginning when it was very unpopular to speak out against the war and the Bush administration."

I must have missed this.

Other "Patriots"

Well, Joy knows a thing or too about patriots.  Her list also includes as American Patriots:  Hugo Chavez, Kim Jong-il, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Madonna. Not a good list to be on, really, if you think about it.

Oops!

Curse the double post.

Hey, I think she's right.

Hey, I think she's right. Her full quote was:

"Well, Susan and her husband Tim Robbins are two of the most patriotic Americans that we have in the media"

Key phrase: "In the media". That's like saying "two of the tallest worms" or "two of the kindest serial killers" or "two of the best smelling turds".

When asked if he went to war with Iraq to derail the impeachment vote: “I don’t think any serious person would believe that and President would do such a thing." - President Clinton (Dec 1998).

Uh, since when are Sarandon

Uh, since when are Sarandon and Robbins "in the media"?

I thought they were actors!!

Oh, I get it. They're in movies...that means everyone cares what they think!!

And don't get your hopes up anyone...she just said she would be "looking into a move to Italy, maybe Canada...."

Just like Alec Baldwin; she's leaving herself a way out.

If Saran Wrap and Robbins The Cradle are patriots

THEN DAVID BECKHAM IS AN ATHLETE! SAME GOES FOR YOU BEHAR, YOU ANGRY SELF-LOATHING LEFTIST!

Wait: David Beckham isn't an

Wait: David Beckham isn't an athlete?

GOLDEN BALLS...

Beckham is an athelete, he damn good athelete, well managed, very successful, & he loves America. Ok, I'll cop to it, I love soccer, & I think the only other person here who does is "fitzfong".

That aside, he understands this country, & has a greater love of it then many Dems in power today. When asked about whether he would consider playing here in the USA a few years back, he said he like it here. He liked the people, & he also liked the fact that he would see many people flyingthe flag because they WANTED TO, not because they HAD TO. He has been around the world representing the English National Team, Manchester United & Real Madrid, & been to places where it would be hard to love your country. Where the people did'nt have the right to speak freely, to practice their faith freely, or come & go as they wish.

He gets a bad rap here in America, his big debut last year sucked because he was never really healthy, a left ankle injury. He's healthy now, his team the LA Galaxy are fighting for 1st, & he's playing well. I will also say that unlike many of todays sports figures, you are unlikly to hear too many negatives about Beckham outside of his wife being a pain from time to time.

"...it's still We The People, Right?"  Megadeth

Let's be honest, though. He

Let's be honest, though. He only came to America for the money and fame and because he's on the downward slope of his career.

MAYBE...

...maybe not, he was vacationing here in the States long before he ever really thought about playing here. Downslide of his career, he's past 30, so maybe. But he just captained England yesterday, over the hill types don't captain their national teams in countries like England, plus physically, he has'nt really declined, & atheletes today are in better shape longer then they used to be 30 years ago. He did'nt need money or fame, he had that long before he singed with LA Galaxy. As to whether he pans out the way MLS wants, time will tell, I hope it does.

"...it's still We The People, Right?"  Megadeth

He's captaining England, but

He's captaining England, but I don't think he's a big cog in their machine, nor was he toward the end at Real Madrid.

As for money and fame, neither can be matched in the bright lights of U.S.A., the biggest stage of all.

Beckham rocks!  And I love

Beckham rocks!  And I love soccer!

The only handicap he has is that stick he calls a wife.  Alone, he is way cool and if he says he loves the USA, then that's even better.  And if he came here on the down-slope of his career, so what?  He came HERE.  It was where he wanted to be.

Can't wait for the next world cup (if South Africa doesn't implode and change the location, my nephew will be working the games as a sports medicine guy)  (...my vocabulary isn't checked out on that job description)

Soccer is a lot like Golf

I can see why someone might want to play it, but I can't see why anyone would want to watch it. Especially when they can watch both those games without all the boring bits. We call that Hockey.

Q. Is Panamanian born John McCain a "Natural Born Citizen"

I love watching it

I love watching it because they play the entire time they are playing.  They are beautifully graceful (in a wonderfully brutal sort of way) and non-stop up and down the field.  The beauty of the game is in the playing thereof.  When they score, it is just that much more incredible because they are all such fantastic athletes.

If the only purpose of a game is to see the final score then I suppose US Football has its merits.  To me, though, it is the most frustratingly boring game to watch because so much time is spent standing around scratching, spitting, and doing whatever while the entire last 24 seconds of play is hashed and rehashed and reviewed and disected for 10 minutes before another 12 seconds is attempted.  Basically it is a lot of standing around with spurts of bull-dozing.  (That is an outsiders insight, for those who care.)

But in soccer - if they play for 45 minutes, they PLAY for 45 minutes!  I love it.

P.S. in my vast inexperience, I've often wondered if hockey isn't just soccer on skates?  My grandkid (age 7) is a whiz-bang little goalie on a league in Phoenix and absolutely loves the game so I am desperately trying to figure it out and become a lunatic fan.  It's an uphill struggle.  Not the fan part of it (he is amazing.  This is an unbiased endorsement) but the dedication to watching and understanding it.  Opsimathy can only achieve so much!

It sounds to me like you like to watch Soccer for the same reason that I like to watch mud wrestling. ;0)

The rules of Hockey are very much like the rules of Soccer. Except in Soccer, if you put your elbow into you opponent you get kicked out of the game. In Hockey you can hit your opponent over the head with a wooden stick and send him careening across the ice and instead of going to jail for several years, you just go in the penalty box for 2 minutes!
