Is sexism strictly an American phenomenon? That’s what Whoopi Goldberg asked to former Clinton press secretary Dee Dee Myers. Appearing on the April 22 edition of "The View" to promote her book "Why Women Should Rule the World," Whoopi, noting that there has never been a female president, framed her question in this fashion.
"Do you think that this issue, this, this idea that women can’t do the same things as men is strictly an American idea or is this a worldwide idea? Because I look at other countries that have women that have run their countries that have women prime ministers and such. So are we just lagging behind a little bit?"
No Whoopi. In fact, in many countries, sexism is far worse. In many Islamic states, a show with four or five women voicing their opinions would not be allowed. "The Daily Telegraph," for example, reported that women in Saudi Arabia have fewer rights than infants in the United States.
"Women in the oil rich kingdom must refer almost every act to a male guardian for permission, including medical treatment, travel and what clothes to wear, according to Human Rights Watch (HRW)."
Walters and Myers exemplified some countries that elected female leaders, but Myers noted that many are parliamentary systems where parliament elects a prime minister rather than the people directly. The former White House press secretary dreamed that one day "the American people would put gender aside and elect a woman."
The relevant transcript is below.
WHOOPI GOLDBERG: Do you think that this issue, this, this idea that women can’t do the same things as men is strictly an American idea or is this a worldwide idea? Because I look at other countries that have women that have run their countries that have women prime ministers and such. So are we just lagging behind a little bit?
BARBARA WALTERS: Yeah, we have Ireland, Switzerland, Chile, India, and Argentina. Very different countries all have-
DEE DEE MYERS: Right and Liberia-
GOLDBERG: Germany.
MYERS: Germany, a lot, the Philippines. I think there’s a lot of reasons, some of them are cultural. I think some of them have to do with the way we elect presidents. Women have done better in the early stages, in countries where there are like a prime minister because you just have to win among your party in a parliament where it’s harder for women, I think, to be directly elected by the voters. But that’s starting to change in countries like Chile and Liberia where the voters are directly electing more women. And hopefully at some point in the not too distant future, I don’t know if it will happen this time, but sometime soon hopefully the American people will put aside gender and elect a woman. It would be wonderful.

We need one that would take the bully-pulpit and use it often as need be when it comes to issues like illegal immigration, drilling for oil here in this country, conservative judges, reducing the govt. by ridding us of some Depts. and of course goes without saying defending this country and wiping out terrorists.
Simple as that.

Remember a few months back, First Lady Laura Bush was heading out to a trip to Saudi Arabia on a mission to put pressure on the Saudi's for their complacency over the treatment of women there? Some US woman journalist attacked her for going, saying something like, ... shouldn't she just stay at home..haven't we done enough damage abroad...?? Got to find that again. (;~/ gary.

Ultimate reward: Sex?
April 22, 2008 - 17:11 ET by CortillaenThis is something I pointed out years ago in a call to a local, conservative radio program: The "ultimate reward" for Muslim "martyrs" is literally a personal harem. Funny how it all comes down to sex, huh? Christians go to paradise to be joyful with their God forever, Hindus get resurrected into better station and eventually get to some form of paradise (varies with sect), and Buddhists have a similar supreme release from a reincarnation cycle, but Muslims get a harem... Even disregarding the obvious devaluation of women to no more than toys, a serious problem in itself, Muslims' ultimate reward (which, I assume, only applies to males; ought to look into that) is effectively sex. Interesting given how obsessed the Muslim culture is with making sure women are kept covered in public, never allowed to demonstrate attractiveness. It also says something about the religion and culture.
If you stop and think about it for a moment, that specific reward actually makes a lot of sense in the right context. Warning: Blasphemy (but well thought out blasphemy, not moronic libel) ahead. Consider Islam's origins: Muhammad, discontent with his merchant's life goes to pray, has a seizure (and, supposedly, a revelation from Allah), and starts preaching, gaining followers. He eventually becomes a warlord, crusading against the unbelievers to capture Mecca. Now, as a warlord, leader of thousands of fighting men, what reward could be promised them that would make them unafraid to die for his cause? An afterlife in paradise? Well, that's already being promised by several religions... Think, these are mostly young to middle-aged men, so what would have universal appeal that other religions don't offer? Why, an afterlife in paradise with your own personal harem! I think anyone can agree that the male sex drive can be a tremendously powerful motivator, something this specific bit of religious canon seems to capitalize upon. (I'd like to look into the creation of the Koran, specifically the parts referencing the afterlife and see when they were created compared to Muhammad's actions to check my suspicion. If anyone knows of some good sources, I'd appreciate it.)

April 22, 2008 - 16:39 ET by dscottMyers noted that many are parliamentary systems where parliament elects a prime minister rather than the people directly.
You're correct bal, however, isn't the real underlying issue why have women through history taken the position of power in cultures that were clearly non-matriarical? Note that queens (Elizabeth, Victoria, Sheba), prime ministers (Indira Ghandi and Golda Meir) and dictators (Evita Peron) have been women just to name the most famous ones. I suggest this is more of the workings of group politics of the time than it has to do with gender per say. A group seeking power uses anyone to their advantage to achieve their ends, it has nothing to do with altruism.
Hillary Clinton, whom Whoppi is indirectly referring to, is just a figurehead as it were of a group of people who stand to benefit by having her elected. Obama is no different in this regard. Here are two people of no relevent experience running for the presidency of the US, yet the group in question, the Democrat Party believes their agenda may be best served at this particular time by the token female or black. This is just another diversion in the form over substance debate.
Which brings me back to the former female leader examples, the groups who put them in power and kept them in office merely did so as long as it suited their agenda. Cynical, I know, but how else do you explain any of these women given the times they lived? You really think any of these groups believed in the equality of women any more than the divine right of kings? Take one look at the financial contributors to the Dem Party, do they give millions just because they "believe" in the Dem Party cause or do they have an ulterior motive, such as more money in their pockets????

April 22, 2008 - 17:29 ET by Darth DutchI'd say the mere fact that Hillary Clinton is a viable contender for the office of President shows that we are not a sexist nation. Nations that are truly sexist are the ones who suppress women and would never in a million years consider allowing a woman to run for office. So just because one has never won the Presidency doesn't mean we're sexist.

The question around Whoopi
April 26, 2008 - 00:23 ET by algoa456Could it be that the explanation regarding Whoopi's erratic thought processes - she is as dumb as a box of hammers. The US is one of the least sexist places on the planet! You want sexist, I'll give you sexist. I worked in the ME. Many countries there do not have toilets in office buildings or public places for woman because - quite logically - woman should not be out and about, but staying at home. As I said Goldberg seems uniquely uninformed.
