Tag is a violent game that should not be allowed says "View" co-host Joy Behar. Discussing the game’s suspension at an elementary school in McLean, Virginia on the April 16 edition, Elisabeth Hasselbeck felt kids needed an outlet, like playing, to get out their aggression. Behar instead advocated a "psycho-drama technique where you reverse roles with the other child." Whoopi Goldberg then jumped in to note the absurdity of Behar’s argument.

GOLDBERG: They don’t care about this. They just want to play, why not?

BEHAR: But they’re hitting.

GOLDBERG: No, you adults are saying they’re hitting. They’re playing! They’re having fun!

Barbara Walters also defended the school adding that they said the game had grown out of hand and was becoming dangerous for the children. The entire transcript is below.

ELISABETH HASSELBECK: There’s a school in Virginia where the principal has just recently banned tag. And, you know, this comes after I think dodge ball was banned, I think break dancing is now banned, tug of war is banned, and now tag is banned. I’m just a believer in the playground at school recess is place where kids can kind of work out their issues. I talked to a good friend-

JOY BEHAR: They should be allowed to attack each other.

HASSELBECK: I think that, no [laughter] hear me out. My friend, okay, one of my best best friends has worked in inner city schools from Massachusetts to New York. She believes firmly in the fact that this is a more controlled environment where these kids can actually problem solve themselves in an environment where consequence can happen and then, you know what, you can use it as-

BEHAR: Why don’t they talk it through?

HASSELBECK: You can use it as a teaching moment. They have a cement play- this isn’t a playground with like, you know, things and parks and swings and grass. This is a place where kids can imagine and play these games and learn about dealing with people.

BARBARA WALTERS: But on the other hand tell what his point of view was, was that in these days where kids are so often bullies, that it is not the kind of tag "I got you you’re it." It’s punching, it’s hitting, it’s throwing to the ground. It’s become a violent playground exercise.

WHOOPI GOLDBERG: I’m sorry. It was always violent. I mean, I thought it was, you know, because I thought it was because you ran and you went over and you shoved people, you knocked, you fell on the floor, you know, that’s part of growing up.

BEHAR: I think you’re supposed to go "tag."

GOLDBERG: Not in my neighborhood.

SHERRI SHEPHERD: No, you’re supposed to push each other.

GOLDBERG: Like "boom, tag," exactly.

SHEPHERD: You have a generation of a lot of kids today that are really angry though. There’s a lot of anger that they have.

GOLDBERG: Because they have no outlet.

BEHAR: You’re suggesting that their outlet should be to hit another child?

HASSELBECK: I’m suggesting that these games, which are free play for kids in a cement field essentially.

BEHAR: Cement, you can break your head in cement.

HASSELBECK: Listen to me, listen to me. I played on cement when I was little, okay, I grew up in Providence, Rhode Island. Hear me out. I think that this is an environment where they can work out their issues there in a place where teachers, good teachers will use it as kind of a teaching moment. "Hey, you know I heard this was going on. Let’s talk about that. You know, if you’re working out your issues there, getting out your aggression there, you may be less likely to work them out somewhere else." You know, I fell like I learned a lot by getting beamed in the head.

WALTERS: So you would say to Gracie when she’s playing tag and some-

HASSELBECK: Good, I think she should play tag.

WALTERS: -one hits her and she falls in the cement and gets a concussion you say "good deal you worked it out."

HASSELBECK: They, they play it now.

BEHAR: I would be more apt to use a psycho-drama technique where you reverse roles with the other child.

GOLDBERG: They’re seven. They’re seven.

HASSELBECK: They want to be physical.

BEHAR: They can do it at three, believe me.

GOLDBERG: They don’t care about this. They just want to play, why not?

BEHAR: But they’re hitting.

GOLDBERG: No, you adults are saying they’re hitting. They’re playing! They’re having fun!

BEHAR: The only thing about it is every time I see a three year old on a tricycle or a five year old, how old are these kids, seven, eight? They’re on a tricycle. They’re wearing helmets. Everybody’s worried they’re going to get hurt everywhere and then they allow them to do this type of violent game.

HASSELBECK: If this is a violent game, I’m a better person because I got beamed in the head by a dodge ball in the third grade by-

BEHAR: Says you.

HASSELBECK: No, I think I learned a lot, [laughter] honestly. Do you think, do you think taking a couple of hits on the playground is-

GOLDBERG: Come on. Let me hit you on the upside of the head now.

HASSELBECK: I’m not saying I’m better than anybody else. I feel like I learned a lot by taking some hits on the playground. Let them work it out. Please!

SHEPHERD: Elisabeth, a lot of these schools don’t have supervision. They got to be supervised because in this school what they were saying that they’re playing a game with the tag called jailhouse or jail break where they all pile on top of the kid and they got to get up out of that. And some kids could really get hurt. I agree they do need an outlet.

HASSELBECK: But they can regulate it, just don’t cancel it.

Thats' not allowed either, matt....no running, no throwing balls, or even snowballs...in fact the kids in some places are not even allowed to touch the snow.

If they have recess at all, they are to go outside and stand around, maybe do some deep breathing and bending LOL.....and if they get restless in class because they have no outlet for their energy...well then you just medicate them so they will sit still!

Whoopi

I must say that Whoopi Goldberg, despite being a liberal, has some common sense and a lot of good natural instincts, not just on this issue, but on several others.

Yet, like many liberals with

Yet, like many liberals with "common sense", they don't see how liberal policies and political correctness usually have led to the problem or issue they're criticizing. There's a total disconnect.

Whoopi is sounding more

Whoopi is sounding more like Elizabeth every day, must be rubbing off.  Careful Whoopi, common sense is another slippery slope to conservatism just like realizing they're taking too much in taxes.  Muhuhahaha  Don't question the orthodoxy of Behar, let her do the thinking, you'll be happier in the nanny state after all, it is supposed to be for the benefit of women, run by women.

What about childhood obesity?

Kid, you're too fat, go get some exercise.  No, not by playing! Just run in a big circle.

What's that?  You run faster than the other kids?

Shoot, slow down for gosh sakes!  Can't be hurting the other kids' self-esteem now.

Say what? Johnny can't run at all, because he is in a wheelchair?

Okay, so you can't run then.  /crazy mindset off

When I was a young lass, we had a girl break her leg on the swingset.  Did the school tear them down?  Nope.  We played tag, kick the can, kickball, and, the horror!, dangled from monkey bars.  I think most of us turned out to be productive citizens.

When will the school require a marshmallow suit?

I have been working in education for 20 years and it's just a shame to see what is happening to kids for the sake of "safety". They came and tore out the swings and monkeybars and made it all soft and low, the kids had to learn "new games" where there were no winners and losers and when we had contests (when I worked with smaller kids) winners AND losers got prizses.

I tried my best to stop this maddness, but always got told that it would hurt their little egos. I thought it would build character and a desire to win. Kids don't get recess in certain systems and PE is being phased out past middle school.

If you put us outside as kids we would build a fort or find spare parts and make a go-kart. If you put kids out now they have to be directed and they look for Julie the Cruise Director to tell them what to do. Just turn-em loose and let them be kids!

That which you do for the least of us, you do for me.

To top that off then they wonder why we have such obesity with kids anymore too...

Whoopi

I find myself strangly agreeing with Whoopi. I still find many things to dislike about her but then she comes out with a zinger against Joy. Who could not love someone that will tell Joy where to go. Just maybe she was a good addition to the show. Elisabeth needs all the help she can get. It does seem that when Whoopi finds herself siding with Elisabeth,(I.E. commonsence) she does try to pull away.

Playground Police

Obviously Joy played tag when she was little and somebody smacked her too hard in the head.

I remember the boys roughhousing on the playground and nobody ever getting hurt.  We used to hang on the monkey bars and it strengthened our muscles.  We played soccer and kids got kicked in the shins, it was part of playing.  We played jailhouse where you stand around a kid with your arms locked and the kid had to "bust out".  Sometimes you got knocked down, but you got right back up.  Bumps and bruises were part of growing up.

To my knowledge, all the kids I grew up with are healthy functional members of society.

I think maybe someone

I think maybe someone scrunched a clay penis up in Joy's hair in art class. She's bitter.

Joy reminds me of the joke

Joy reminds me of the joke by Jerry Seinfeld where he's going trick-or-treating and his mom makes him where his winter coat over his costume.  Every son has his emasculating moments with his mom, but from my experiance they were always rooted in the relentless love of a parent for her child.  Joy on  the other hand is just sick.  Good thing she stopped at one girl.  I can't imagine being the son of someone with such vile hatred towards all things male.

Freaked Out

They would freak out if they saw how as kids we played rag tag. We grew up on a beutiful lake and swam every day of summer.  For hours every day, boy and girls of all ages would take up the game of rag tag.  It was this ratty shirt that was tied in knots and retied as it unraveled. Soaking wet it probably weighed almost a pound and it always had one long scrap of material that  you could swing it like a mace.  Our only rule, don't drown the little kids and don't hit someone in the head.  It was a generational game, that was played for 8 years that I remember and was probably played after I left for college.

The upside, when you are little, you learn to stay under the dock or tread water out in the middle of the lake - as you get older, you swim faster.  Oh, and none of us grew up to be wack jobs or fat for that matter.

Tag - you're not forced to play it and it is exercise.

Banning tag is one of the

Banning tag is one of the dumbest things I've ever heard of, same with banning dodgeball. Schools are way too protective of kids, probably because parents want to sue schools for anything that happens.

Which is easily remedied by

Which is easily remedied by signing a waiver for the kid to go to recess.  Heck, I broke my collar bone in recess as a kid, big whoop-de-do!  It's part of being a kid.  What's next, put them all in a blow up air suit to keep them from hurting themselves when they fall?  This is the what we call Nanny State thinking, it suffocating the risk taking that people need to do in order to grow.

Lord Sidious / Darth Vader 2008  Long Live the Empire!  Come to the Dark Side, it is your Destiny.

"tag" is violent?

"It’s punching, it’s hitting, it’s throwing to the ground. It’s become a violent playground exercise."

That's not "tag," that's bullying and no amount of “banning” is going to stop some kids from becoming bullies.

Bullies are antisocial; they don’t want others to interact socially so they are disruptive in social settings. They break the rules and harm others in an attempt to stop social interactions between people. The other kids need to learn that, even though some people are antisocial and won't play by the rules, only the rule breakers will be punished for their antisocial behaviors and not everyone else.

Banning a game like tag because a few kids are antisocial is foolish and counterproductive. It only reinforces that antisocial behavior because you're rewording it by disrupting social interactions. That's just what antisocial children and adults want, the disruption of social interactions. It’s why they're called “antisocial.”

How can so many "educated" adults fail to understand this basic cause and effect relationship? Why are they reinforcing antisocial behavior and, somehow, believe it's for the benefit of everyone? You might as well cancel school because a few kids skipped class; it'll have the same effect.

Bullies

You can't ban bullies. That's insensitive. You have to council them; let them try to express their inner feelings; mark their papers in purple, not red. You also have to hire extra school aides to keep an eye on things -- and to get them to also join a union.

There's a lot going on in our schools that should make you sad, mad, and afraid.
