"View" co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck touted the success of the surge before "objective" journalist Barbara Walters dismissed it. On the April 8 edition of "The View," the panel discussed General Petraeus’ testimony before Congress on the situation in Iraq. Hasselbeck called the surge "one of the most effective strategies in the war" before Walters swiftly responded "no it has not." Walters then added because violence has seen an up tick in the past few weeks the surge has failed.
Hasselbeck then pulled some numbers noting the Iraqis "met 12 of the 18 benchmarks" and "90,000 of the Sunnis have decided to join U.S. forces." Walters responded by dismissing those figures adding "darling you can get all of the statistics you want, but you’ve had more violence than you’ve had in months."
The entire transcript is below.
ELISABETH HASSELBECK: I think the surge has probably been one of the most effective strategies in this war.
BARBARA WALTERS: No it has not.
HASSELBECK: Oh, I disagree I think it absolutely has-
WALTERS: I think a few weeks ago it was considered that. Now there has been more violence than there has been in many months. And you’ve had other military men saying that the, that the armed forces are so, there are so few and they’re so strained that we would not be prepared for other attacks. I think the surge- from what I read- I’m not an authority and none of us here are- the surge was but the violence has continued and gotten worse. And the, and the Iraqis are showing no ability to be able to take over.
HASSELBECK: Well, they’ve met 12 of the 18 benchmarks. 90,000 of the Sunnis have decided to join U.S. forces. They have-
WALTERS: Darling you can get all of the statistics that you want, but you’ve had more violence than you’ve had in months.
HASSELBECK: This surge will be studied for years to come in terms of the genius of it, how it turned this war around.
JOY BEHAR: I have a question. How long does this surge last? A surge, like when you get an electric surge, it’s very short. [laughter and applause] Why is this going on so long?
HASSELBECK: The surge was our initial- remember in 2006 when people like, I mean you had everyone from Senator Clinton calling for a quick withdraw. They said the only way we can have any sort of victory was to quickly get our troops out of there in 2006. And General Petraeus recommended, and you have Senator McCain who was right behind him-
WALTERS: But the question is how long is this surge going to be?
HASSELBECK: The surge was the initial push.
WALTERS: But how long is the surge going to be?
SHERRI SHEPHERD: She’s not General Petraeus Barbara!
HASSELBECK: The surge is-
[laughter]
SHEPHERD: I mean, you got to give her a break.
BEHAR: She’s on record saying it’s working. We want to know how long.
HASSELBECK: The surge has worked. The surge has worked. That initial push of troops into the area has absolutely worked. No one can deny that.
WALTERS: Yes you can if it’s not working now.
HASSELBECK: That, that’s up for debate. General Petraeus what’s actually happening there.
(h/t Greg for the YouTube video)

WALTERS: I think a few weeks ago it was considered that. Now there has been more violence than there has been in many months. And you’ve had other military men saying that the, that the armed forces are so, there are so few and they’re so strained that we would not be prepared for other attacks. Walters once again proves
April 8, 2008 - 14:49 ET by BDWalters once again proves she has no mind for tactics, strategy, the art of war, or even an understanding of the cultures in the lands involved.
Each move we make, will necessitate the enemy making a counter move of some form, some of them positive for the enemy, many not so.
We sometimes say, the "Enemy always gets a vote" in regards to our operations.
Her citing the fact that the JAM militants are responding to attacks on the heart of their community in Basra and its port area by firing into the Green Zone from nearby Sadr City - misses the fact that it is simply that - a response.
The surge has had EXTREMELY positive effects such as the AQ in Western Iraq has been largely eradicated, survivors having begun to atttempt to flee to their homelands.
Arabic culture respects shows of strength, and that is precisely what the Surge feasts off of.

Funny, but wasn't the number "600,000" thrown around on the ubstructedView? As in, MediaMatters' ficticious number for Iraqi dead that became the left's TRUTH.
It really never ceases to amaze me...one day they're using made up numbers to justify their treasonous gossiping, then the next they're saying that statistics don't matter. Do they think that we don't notice?

April 8, 2008 - 16:11 ET by jpatchRunning such a large military operation, with such a MASSIVE budget, there is HUGE pressure to be efficient. The amount of troops that was estimated to be needed to control the ground situation is just that: an estimation. It's an estimation the is budget-sensitive; therefore, its going to be a cautious estimation.
Our troops were doing an outstanding job of controlling the nation of Iraq, however they didn't have enough resources, men, and time to simultaneously build Iraqi cities, Iraqi police forces, and Iraqi military.
That is something that we had to come to grips with, and that is why our Generals and President Bush called for more troops. War is unpredictable.
There have been...

Ladies of the View - have a seat and listen very carefully. I know this might be hard to understand, so I'll speak s l o w l y.
In this country, we took about a year to delcare our independence from England and the king. that was 1775 - 1776. Does that year ring a bell? Good, so you do have a "sense" of history.
Now, here's the important part. It took from 1777 to 1783 to defeat the British. Ok, it was a long time ago, and travel and news took longer, but the next dates have importance.
1784 to 1790, another 6 years to form a Constitution, the law of the land. What is important about that, is the following. It took 6 years of war, then 6 years of debate, by VERY smart guys (not like the folks we have today) to form our present form of government. You guys want toknow how things are going in Iraq - think, just a little please, THINK. YOU, are asking the Iraqis to do the same thing, NOW, while the war is going on, battle bad guys, form a governement and do it on a timetable that even you don't have any idea about.
You like to think that you are always fair? Is it fair that you want people who were under the thumb of a tyrant, to do and have what we have had for over 200 years, and do it right away? If so, they you truly are idiots, and there is no hope for you or the people who think, think, you're smart. Fortunately, there are people who know better.
