Sherri Shepherd: Reverend Wright's Words 'Taken Out of Context'

Are Reverend Wright’s anti-American sermons simply taken out of context? According to "View" co-hosts Sherri Shepherd and Barbara Walters they are. Sherri Shepherd first made excuses for Wright claiming "he suffered racism full force,"and then added viewers are not getting the full context and any of "The View" co-hosts could be tagged as racist with a sound bite.

Barbara Walters concurred noting that in Joy Behar calling Barack Obama "literate" could be taken as a racial slur. Elisabeth Hasselbeck struck back challenging the co-hosts to "put [Reverend Wright’s inflammatory remarks] in a context that sounds good. It doesn’t."

Joy Behar, who does not even know the Constitution and its history, took a shot at President Bush’s intelligence labeling him illiterate and claiming if he were to give a speech about race, "it would be about NASCAR."

The entire transcript is below.

ELISABETH HASSELBECK: I don’t think it was accurate, it’s just my opinion, to equate his grandmother with Reverend Wright’s statements. And I think that, I don’t think we’re ever going to hear a speech from Senator Obama that sounds bad. He is incredible. He is charismatic. He’s thoughtful. He knows how to communicate, and that is a powerful tool. However, I still have issue with the fact that, you know, if we go back in time when, when Don Imus uttered those racial, racial tones and words that he did, Senator Obama was one of the first to call for his resignation. He said he should step down-

JOY BEHAR: Because he’s- well, can I tell why.

HASSELBECK: Let me finish. Let me finish.

BEHAR: Alright, hurry up.

[applause]

HASSELBECK: Why should I hurry up?

BEHAR: It’s only a one hour show. We all should dialogue.

HASSELBECK: That is unfair. That is unfair.

BARBARA WALTERS: One at a time.

HASSELBECK: He said "there’s nobody on my staff that would still be working for me if they made a comment like that and about anybody of any ethnic group." And then he refused to appear on Don Imus’ show. He said "I’ll never go on." But he returned to this church time and time again. How many times and how many racial slurs do you hear before you walk out of the church?

WALTERS: Sherri-

SHERRI SHEPHERD: Joy had a comment.

WALTERS: So did you before. Do you want to go or do you want to wait for Joy?

SHEPHERD: Well, I was just going to say-

BEHAR: After you my dear Alfonse.

SHEPHERD: I was just going to say, this preacher, like you said, he suffered racism full force. And that’s where he’s coming from. He’s angry about that. But you’re getting a sound bite, a clip, and 20 seconds, and everybody around this table, if you took your sound bites, somebody could say "Elisabeth is racist." You are not racist.

HASSELBECK: I’m not racist.

WALTERS: She didn’t call you racist.

SHEPHERD: No, but if they took a little bit of a sound bite, Elisabeth, and they played it over and over again-

HASSELBECK: But the clips- let me tell you, the clips that we heard, the clips that we heard, are on a DVD that is being sold in that church. Okay, the quotes that we heard, many of them that we heard, many of the racial undertones-

WALTERS: Of the reverend.

HASSELBECK: -of the reverend speaking are sold on a DVD in that church. What does that mean to me? If my church is selling a DVD, that’s the cornerstone of what they’re preaching.

SHEPHERD: No, that is not the cornerstone of what the Trinity Church is preaching.

BEHAR: This is- let me pass that conversation. We’re talking about Imus, I thought.

HASSELBECK: Imus? Yes, he said he will not go on that show. He returned to this church for 20 years. How many things do you have to say "not for me"?

BEHAR: Imus said something about "nappy headed hoes," which struck Obama personally because he has two little girls.

HASSELBECK: Absolutely it struck me. I’m white. It’s awful.

BEHAR: But you’re mixing apples and oranges together.

SHEPHERD: It didn’t strike you the way it struck-

BEHAR: This is a more personal response to Imus. Plus can I just say one more thing?

HASSELBECK: It’s not right.

BEHAR: That I found it such a relief to hear Senator Obama give such a literate speech. If George Bush were given a speech on race, it would be about NASCAR. [applause] Okay? Let me just say that!

HASSELBECK: Do you want to talk apples and oranges? They’re your apples and oranges.

BEHAR: I’m just talking to hear a literate, intelligent, sophisticated speech from a presidential candidate to show that America does have the ability to raise the standard of literacy in this country, so that people don’t have to make fun of us from nation to nation around the world. [applause] Including every comedian. Thank you.

WALTERS: What you just said could be offensive to blacks, that you are happy to hear a literate speech, because, you know, it’s like saying-

BEHAR: What?

WALTERS: Ah, do you remember last week when somebody talked about somebody being articulate, and Whoopi I believe or somebody said "but you wouldn’t call a white person articulate"?

BEHAR: Why can’t this be offensive to whites in some saying George Bush is illiterate?

WALTERS: It could. I’m just saying that this is how, that this is how things-

SHEPHERD: Taken out of context. You take them out of context like they took Reverend Wright’s speech.

WALTERS: Okay, my-

HASSELBECK: Well, put it in a context that it sounds good- no, wait a minute, wait- put it in a context that sounds good.

SHEPHERD: Well, hold on, hold on. I let you speak all the time. What you just said, when you said "he was literate." You were talking about George Bush saying something about NASCAR and race.

BEHAR: But he’s illiterate.

SHEPHERD: If you take that out of context, that little part of what you said about Obama, and put it on YouTube, and played and played it, they can say you are racist.

WALTERS: I agree. That’s what I was just saying.

HASSELBECK: The United States of the K-K-K-A. Put it in a context that sounds good. It doesn’t.

Just wondering

I am wondering if Justin is on Joy Behar's holiday card list?

Joy, you buttocks cranium

Typical Liberal answer; divert from the subject or answering the question by using juvenile name calling or the ole second grade "He's a big dummy".

While a bit of a word stumbler sometimes, George W is by no means illiterate. He's "dumb" like a fox.

"All generalizations are false, including this one.” Mark Twain

Exactly - put it in the right context then

I haven't heard anyone even try. Not even Obama.

Note to "The Spew"

To take something out of context means to remove a part from the whole in order to convey a meaning other than what was intended.

The quotes of Mr. Wright were typical of race-bating, hate-mongering demagogues who foster fear and division for their own personal ends; so the remarks were quoted in perfect context.

For people to make light of that hateful rhetoric, or to make excuses for it, will simply encourage more of it and instead of solving anything, will make things worse.

??

Please someone, Sherri Shepherd perhaps, explain to me how you take the words "God Damn America" out of context?

Since government is coercion, politics is largely the exercise of deception regarding the intended use of coercion - George Orwell

»→ Beanman

There are only two possible translations.

  1. "G#dd#man (one word) America, where the Lord's name is used as an expletive.

  2. God (please) damn America (where the speaker is asking God to vent His hatred on America.

There can be no doubt that Wright intended #2 in his sermon.

The only correct "context" I can think of for Wright's bile is in a garbage dumpster or perhaps a sewer.

Perhaps NB can form a new division to catalog the foolishness from "The View" and name it "Shrew Busters".

I think the words spoken by

I think the words spoken by all KKK members have been taken out of context, too.

Good point

I believe you're right in this thinking.  Possibly we should all look at David Duke in a different light now.  Maybe Robert Byrd...

One can only hope that the

One can only hope that the people who are able to watch this psycho-babble have some brains cells left to just ignore what these air-heads have to say. If it was me, I'd be calling ABC to advise them that I find this show more offensive than a MoveOn.org ad....oops, wait a minute, I think The View IS a MoveOn.org ad....

YIKES!!!

Context

Whever people try to squirm out of what they say, it becomes "Well, that was taken out of context".

Many times things are

Many times things are indeed taken out of context.  The test for this is to dig deeper into the remarks, put them in the correct context and see if the meaning changes.

»→ Context, mattm

For example:  Protestants believe that after the rapture, a global religion will envelop the world.  Many Protestants believe this church will be what remains of the Catholic Church.

The context of Rev. Hagee's remarks, possibly, are in reference to that church that is comandeered by Satan after all believing Christians are taken up to heaven.

But contextually, it's expedient to claim Hagee's remarks refer to the present day Catholic Church.

Personally, after God takes us up to heaven, I couldn't care less whether it's a Catholic, Islamic, or Protestant church that gets used for that purpose.

Thanks for understanding I was not trying to hijack the thread but giving what I believe to be a valid example of contextual dishonesty.

I was happy to see Elisabeth dug up the Obama moment of self righteousness from the Imus saga.

I had posted it in today's wee hours.

Good ol' dependable FOX News has tipped their hat to Elisabeth on this one and have independantly reported the Imus hypocrisy as well.

Is the world round?

Isn't Sherri Sheppard the one who didn't know that the world was round.  She said she would have to go look it up.  How do these people get on tv????

You said, quote...

That and your "analrapist" signature...too much visual imagery for me, especially if I'm sitting here eating my salad while reading.  Yum!

Aren't you a little "number two" minded, Red Dragon?  I've always wondered about the fascination some people have with excretory organs and functions.  This is not criticism...I'm just wondering; call me curious, I suppose.  Maybe you are just part of a movement, but you could end up being the butt of your own jokes.

Audience?

What type of person watches The View?  Is it lonely women who have nothing constructive to do with their time?  I'm a man and I've watched the show a few times and I just don't get its appeal.  Why watch someone like Joy Behar say stupid stuff year after year?

GEORGE WILL HAD THE ANSWER FOR "RACISM" YEARS AGO

The blacks confuse racism with lack of equal opportunity. We are all racist, i.e. we all know certain races are superior. Are blacks better than at basketball or the 100 meter dash than Jews? DUH!

Are Jews, as a group, better than Hispanics at being lawyers or scientists? Duh! (check the nobel prizes in Science for the last 5 decades).

The fact that the public correctly observes that blacks , as a group, commit 50 times more crime than whites, proportionately, isn't racism, it's just observing.

George Wills answer to poverty: finish high school, get married & don;t have kids until married. Poverty solved. Therefore crime solved, therefore they are looked upon as regular people.

Wouldn;t you love to hear black "leaders" yelling.."Stop having kids out of wedlock! Stop commiting crime!" Instead, they yell about how many blacks are in jail...well, how did they get there "Reverends"??

Thats not the point The

Thats not the point

The "so-called white man" keeps blacks down, that's what is taught. I have seen this for years, but Blacks are the biggest Kool-aid (no pun indented) drinkers ever.

I saw it with the Jena 6.  I work in an Afferitive Action heavy job.   on the day of the trial blacks were to wear black cloths in support.   every black person did,  and I mean every black person from the upper managment to the lowest person on the totem pole (my peers lol)   it didn't matter the 6 guys beat up 1 person it was the white man court charging 16 and 17 year old boys as adults with attemped murder.

also

The rich white man "owes" blacks because of slavery.   it doesn't matter if you family owned slaves or if you are first generation to come to the USA..."if you white you gained from slavery so you owe"  (The leader of the Slave reperations BS said this on "Penn & Teller's Bullsh!t")

Telling black to stop having kids out of wedlock is "the rich white man" keeping the black population down so whites can control  blacks.   It's racial population control.

Prisons have 50 times more blacks not because blacks commit 50 times more crime, really the white man commits crimes but needs blacks to take the rap for the crime to take the spot light away from the white crime.

Here you  have "Big Oil" and "Big Tobacco" ect that is run by the rich white man.   But nobody ever mentions "Big Racism". how do black "leaders" make all thier money?    They don't have jobs.

so it all started with George Will??????

Know Your Black leaders

Blacks didn’t need George Will or anyone else to teach them how to succeed. Blacks were doing darn well, until black opportunists like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, et al, decided to throw in with feminists, socialists , and the liberal media.

These entities did everything in their power to convince a majority of black people that it was in their best interest to abandon self-sufficiency and adopt dependency, via government programs.

I admit, you might be able to make a case for blacks standing up to Jackson, Sharpton, and the socialists. But you have to agree that, at the time, they didn’t have a prayer battling the liberal media. Heck, this website, NewsBusters, was created to combat the liberal media.

And as far as “black leaders“yelling"? See Bill Cosby, Juan Williams, Jesse Lee Peterson, etc, etc, etc… These men, and many others, have been "self-sufficiency", for a hell of a long time.

Media exposure

"And as far as “black leaders“yelling"? See Bill Cosby, Juan Williams, Jesse Lee Peterson, etc, etc, etc… These men, and many others, have been "self-sufficiency", for a hell of a long time."

How much media do they get besides Fox?It is always Jackson and Sharpton on the MSM.Bill,Juan, and Jesse put out a positive message and are ingnored or belittled by the MSM.

Here Sherri - put this in "context" for us!

Here Sherri - put this in context for us!

The clip where Reverend Wright is ranting in hatred, as he thrusts his pelvic forward, suggesting  that Hillary would be as Bill Clinton had, f---ed the blacks just as he did Monica Lewinski. This man doesn't just hate America - he hates the Clinton's.

Rev. Wright:  Hillary is married to Bill and Bill have been good to us? No, he ain't! Bill did us just like he did Monica Lewinsky!

Congregation:  (cheers)

Rev. Wright:  He was riding dirty!

Now there is some context.

Now Sherri. Here is your assignment. Invite Bill Clinton on; show himm the clip; and ask him to defend himself -- and look out for that wagging finger of his.

Why is it I think that

Why is it I think that Sherri Shepherd is in total agreement with what "Rev." Wright has been saying.

Either that, or she is a complete idiot.

Oh, wait....

Context contest

It seems to me the only people that are taking the wrong-rev Wright's words out of context are Behar and Shepperd.

OMG Justin...how do you do

OMG Justin...how do you do it?

I could not even read the whole transcript....and I was just about finished too...

Just couldn't do it....Can't do it...no way.

It attacks your sensibilities...right to the core.

Behar loves all things literate

BEHAR: That I found it such a relief to hear Senator Obama give such a literate speech. 1) If George Bush were given a speech on race, it would be about NASCAR. [applause] Okay? 2) Let me just say that!

1) Oh, lover of all things literate, I know you meant, "If George Bush were to give a speech . . ."

2) Ummm, pardon me Ms. literate, but they already allowed you to 'say that.' Would you like to say it again?

I defend Dr. Wright's speech

Dr. Wright has a total right to make the speeches he has.  He also has the responsibility of his words, and Barack Obama has the responsibility of association with this person.

The comment by Hasselbach,

"The United States of the K-K-K-A. Put it in a context that sounds good. It doesn’t."

is totally appropos of the modern liberal mentality.  I could make the same sort of comments by Dr. Wright as a white person growing up in the black part of Toledo, OH in the early 1960's.  As a white person if I made these comments, I would be branded as a bigot; what Hasselbach and Walters won't admit is that this man is a bigot based on his comments.

Why should any black person, regardless of his experiences, be allowed to make similar comments and then be defended as "misunderstood"?  This is simply patronization of blacks, that they are somehow inferior and should not be held responsible for their words.  And patronization is the behavior of the slave master, not of the liberator.  Those of us who are holding Dr. Wright responsible for his words are the liberators.

"What experience and history teach is this - that people and governments never have learned anything from history, or acted on principles deduced from it."
G. W. F. Hegel

Did Obama also explain the black community's hatred of Koreans?

Did Obama also explain the black community's hatred of Koreans, Hispanics, Jews and other ethnic groups, or was he just asking us to understand (perhaps even embrace) their hatred of whitey?

The problem for Behar,

The problem for Behar, Shepard and Walters is Obama has already pretty much said the guy said these things.

The real context of Wright's

The real context of Wright's hate spew is that it's the foundational belief of so-called "black liberation theology", as found in Obama's church. That's the context no one is mentioning.

Ms Shepherd..I have a

Ms Shepherd..I have a complete understanding of everything spoken in English...you are a fool. But do not take me for a fool.

I expect absolutely nothing from that View bunch, from what I have read here, they are not exactly brainiacs. I have never been forced to watch their show, not once. I suspect the audience this show gets all nodded their empty heads when you spewed out what you did, but anyone above a two digit IQ knows exactly what Barry said.

There's an EASY way the MSM

There's an EASY way the MSM could resolve all this "taken out of context" nonsense.... PLAY THE DANG QUOTES IN THEIR ENTIRETY, so we could all judge them in their full context.

But they sure as heck aren't going to do that, because their greatest fear is that the Reverend's words WILL be taken IN context.

You can be darned sure that the View's idiotic audience will never hear the Reverend's words, because all of their "news" sources are going to keep the quotes hidden.

When asked if he went to war with Iraq to derail the impeachment vote: “I don’t think any serious person would believe that any President would do such a thing." - President Clinton (Dec 1998).

Who watches the view anyway?

Those numbers are staggering.

The  lucid and free thinking among us are in dire straits, my friend!

Doing the hokey pokey

I like that picture of Shepperd. I didn't know black people did the hokey pokey.

How is President Bush

How is President Bush illiterate? Doesn't illiteracy imply that a person can't read the written word? He went to college and graduated so I'm assuming he knows how to read a Dick and Jane primer. I'm so sick of Bush being attacked because he's not a slick snakeoil salesman like Clinton and Obama. We all misspeak, everyone of us. That doesn't mean we're "illiterate." How is this tired show still on the air? And why are there four loons against one lone conservative?

Behar is an idiot

Why is Joy Behar still on The View? My gosh, she knows nothing.  Has she even taken 8th grade US History?  Her comments and opinions are very immature and naive.  She thinks that beautiful speech = brilliance.  Barack has beautiful speeches, yes, but he doesn't say anything.  He is SUCH a politician.  Sherri, Joy and millions of people are blind to this.  What has Barack even done to deserve presidency?

And Pastor Wright is NOT getting the short end of the stick in this whole mess.  I've been to his website (church) and it's kind of funny - everyone on the church staff is black and has a chip on their shoulder against the white race.  They are hate-filled and full of rage.  How could they possibly be Chrisitians?  Sherri is only defending the pastor because he's black.  Sherri is the TOKEN BLACK host and has to defend the black race.  What a job.

I liked her better as the tour guide co-worker of Ross on Friends.  She's good at scripted sit-coms, but is dead in the water when it comes to sticking up for the black race.  Give it up already.  Sheesh!
