Joy Behar: Bush 'Has Raised Taxes!'

Photo of Justin McCarthy.

Joy Behar’s fact-free analysis continued on the February 8 edition of "The View" as she claimed the Bush administration raised taxes on the American people. Perhaps she was too overwhelmed with rage when Elisabeth Hasselbeck dared to take a shot at Hillary Clinton’s fiscal policy.

Hasselbeck joked about taxes on earned income, "just wait until Hillary is in office, you’re going to give it all back." Behar fought back: "That is so not true. Your president has raised taxes! Please! Ridiculous!"

The spat began when the View co-hosts were discussing a recent survey where the majority of women said they would prefer $1 million over a slimmer waistline. Co-host Whoopi Goldberg reminded the audience that in reality that a million dollars would be a lot less because much of that money is taxed.

GOLDBERG: Okay, let me ask you something because you think it’s a million dollars. 50 percent of that goes to the government-

SHEPHERD: 500.

GOLDBERG: -so you’re only getting $500,000. But wait, wait, wait. Wait, wait. You still have the state and local government to pay for. Do not forget all of these taxes, so-

HASSELBECK: Yeah, just wait until Hillary is in office, you’re going to give it all back.

BEHAR: That is so not true. Your president has raised taxes! Please! Ridiculous! That is ridiculous for you to say!

After Whoopi promoted her weight loss plan, the discussion continued with Joy Behar misleading on the current tax policy.

BEHAR: No wait a minute, just one thing you said. This administration that we’ve been living in for eight years, has raised the deficit. The dollar is worth nothing anymore, and also has given tax cuts to the wealthiest American people, during a war which is unheard of!

HASSELBECK: You think tax breaks should only be given to certain Americans and not all Americans?

BEHAR: I think it should be given only to people who are working.

GOLDBERG: I’m working.

BEHAR: Middle class people, their tax cuts have been irrelevant at this point. Now the multi-millionaire tax cuts are kicking in. And we’re in big trouble because of that.

Apparently Behar has a very broad term for "irrelevant." In the Bush income tax reductions of 2001, the bottom two tax brackets composed of middle income Americans, 28 percent and 15 percent, were reduced to 15 percent and 10 percent respectively. Middle income Americans received between a 33 and 46 percent tax cut. Additionally, after the Bush tax cuts were implemented, the Heritage Foundation found that the rich paid even a larger share of taxes.

"...the share paid by the top quintile edged up from 66.6 percent in 2000 to 67.1 percent in 2004, while the bottom 40 percent's share dipped from 5.9 percent to 5.4 percent."

After Whoopi Goldberg claimed "no one in this country has fared very well under this administration," she replied to Joy Behar that a fair tax cut would give on to everyone who pays taxes, even the rich.

GOLDBERG: Listen, they can keep their money and just pay their taxes. But, you know, my point is that I don’t think you should be chastised because you did make a lot of money in your life.

BEHAR: No, we’re not saying that.

GOLDBERG: Well, you are when you say only- yes, let me tell you why I say that. I say that because if you say Americans across the board should get a tax cut, I think all Americans should get it. When you start to say that only these people should get it because of this, I don’t think it’s right. Give it to everybody, so that- because everybody needs a little break. Everybody needs to feel like their part of the system.

Joy Behar also mocked conservatives who think highly of Ronald Reagan resemble those with Tourette’s Syndrome.

"Oh, they’re dancing around it. They keep saying 'Reagan, Reagan, Reagan,' like some weird Tourette’s Syndrome. [laughter] You know it’s true! The Republicans, the Republicans know it’s true!"

Joy Behar also gave some fact free insight on the Republican nomination process. Behar seems to be ignorant that unlike the Democrats, Republicans do not have superdelegates.

GOLDBERG: Mitt Romney has suspended his running. What exactly does that mean?

BEHAR: He’s out of the race.

ELISABETH HASSELBECK: Suspended his campaign.

SHERRI SHEPHERD: Suspended is different from dropping out though because he could come back.

HASSELBECK: Yeah, what were you saying about the super delegates?

BEHAR: The superdelegates if they vote for him, then he’s still in the race, but he’s out. Come on. Let’s face it.

"Sigh........"

It's just so irresponsible for Barbara Walters to keep this idiot Joy Behar on the show.  She completely makes up stuff and mouths it on air and nobody, even Mrs. Hasselbeck, asks her to back it up with proof.

I don't watch the show.  I only read about it here on Newsbusters.  But I can see that Behar does this on a regular basis.

Irresponsible.  And damaging.

Future Tax Form.

Yes, this site is about

Yes, this site is about liberal bias, but...all this examination of a stand-up comedian's opinions given on a day time TV show, is it really good material?

By now, I think everyone understands that The View is 3-4 liberals and whatever Hasselbeck is.

Just like thousands of

Just like thousands of people consider "The Daily Show" to be "hard news", thousands of people listen to what dummies like Behar say and take it as gospel. (As an aside, Maher, Gorafolo(sp?), Stewart, and Franken are "stand-ups" too, right?)

At this point, I think everybody also understannds that the media is tilted waaaaaaaaaaaay over to the left. Does that mean this website should cease to exist? It's purpose has been fulfilled?

Woohoo!

I never said the job of

I never said the job of this site is completed. I just think, you know, forward progress would be nice. I can't believe the ramblings of Behar are that important to The Cause.

(stand-up aside: yes they are. And?)

Those stand-ups are taken

Those stand-ups are taken seriously by thousands of people. I do not see how pointing out their dumbassity is a bad thing, like you apparently do.

I would assume you would agree that Behar is living in a different world than the rest of us, when she spouts her uneducated crap? Whoopi makes her look like, well, Hasselback-ish...

As for your term "The Cause", it might be nice if you had something forwardly progressive to add to the conversation, other than the usual contrarianisms.

Not a bad thing, per se,

Not a bad thing, per se, just...tired.

re: The Cause, I just coined that phrase, so that's something I'm contributing!!

And I happen to think contrarianisms are needed on this site, given the ludicrous nature of some posts. There's a lot of good stuff on here, and a lot of fluff.

Yo Bal, humor is effective

Bal, Humor is effective as a tool to influence people's thinking.

#1 - If say 99% of Comedians material bashes conservative policies while only 1% bashes Democrat policies, what does that say?

- To me it says that Conservative policies are a joke and easy to make fun of while liberal policies are "true" and should not be made fun of.  Hence when a Fox News channel or Newsbusters does comedy you get a flood of criticism from liberals that it's "not funny".

The reason it's not funny is because it attacks things that are sacred to liberals.

"We" all think it's hillarious when comedians attack those things that are sacred to the right: Religion, Repect for Leaders and Parents, etc..

# 2 - It's far easier to make fun of an idea or a policy that actually come up with a reasoned argument against it or a counter idea or argument for something better.

So, what do you have on the left?  The majority of pundits and influence peddlers:

Maher, Frankin, Stewart, Colbert, Olberman, Moore, Letterman, Leno are ALL comedians.

Get it.  It's easy to ridicule than it is to reason.

Bal is oh-so-typical of

Is there a trailer park in NYCity? Because this woman is trash ... She has garbage for brains, and her annoying, grating-voiced mouth is the chute by which it evacuates her head.

Oh, BTW and FYI, Joy, even IF Pres. Bush DID raise your taxes ... so the heck what?  HE IS NOT RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT!

Whoopi defends, Hasslebeck wilts

Once again, Joy(less) Behar makes absolutely false and irresponsible comments about taxes and the deficit and the only one that half-way repudiates her is Whoopi????? Hasselbeck really needs to quit the show or needs to stop calling herself a conservative because she is weak in defending anything on that show. She's an embarassment to real conservatives and she should be made to just sit there, not be given a mic, and be "the pretty one". That's all she's good for anyways.

These women are the probably the dumbest stumps to ever emit planet destroying CO2 but ones who are dumber than them are tuning in every day and clapping like trained seals in their audience. I pity the people at NB that have to watch that tripe.

Bush economy floats Clinton boat.

"After Whoopi Goldberg claimed "no one in this country has fared very well under this administration," "

Well, the Clintons should be praising the Bush economy.  Under the Clinton economy, the Clintons were virtual paupers.  Now they are multi-millionaires.  Al Gore has sure made a ton of money the last seven years.

I'm sure that the savings they made on income taxes were not turned back in to the IRS - they were probably funneled into travel, savings, homes, carbon credits, etc.

I have a thesis posted on taxes

I have tried to teach people in my real name that taxes are something the government always gets 100 percent of in collecting.

For example, 5% tax on a dollar generates 5 cents to the government. When that dollar turns over 20 times which most dollars do within 1 week, the government has stolen and entire dollar from a community.

The government always gets 100% of a citizens' money just by exchange. Right now the problem is that it is taking almost 60 percent in various taxes and that is why we live in a communist state.

America must not just lower taxes but LOWER THE RATIO of collected taxes as more money is generated in an expanding economy.

Laffer Curve

The Laffer Curve does a good job explaining this. Of course, the government wants to make as much money as possible, and this is reasonable. Liberals think that the total tax receipts / tax percentage ratio is a flat line. In other words, the higher the taxes, the more money the government takes in. That's not the case. It is a curve. Ideally, the government wants to tax at a rate that is at the top of that curve to maximize both the economy and the government take.

Wikipedia has a pretty good write-up on it or you just google Laffer Curve.

America must not just lower

America must not just lower taxes but LOWER THE RATIO of collected taxes as more money is generated in an expanding economy.

And how does it work in the world without Fed that you keep promoting?

Excluding license type taxes, government taxes profits. Not to mention, profits are taxed not on transactional but on aggregate basis. Clinton's healthcare plan is more rooted in a reality than your theory.

Social Security Has Gone Up

President Bush has cut a number of taxes.  One tax that has gone up is Social Security.  The rate has remained the same, but the upper wage limit has increased every year.  It's essentially a tax increase on the rich.  This could be why the economy isn't as strong as it should be.

While I'm on the subject, social security is a black hole on our economy. It's a government endorsed pyramid scheme. It works great as long as we have 1700% population growth.  Unfortunately, population growth in the United States is only about 1%.  It's not enough to sustain the pyramid as it gets turned upside down.  Just like health savings accounts, we need retirement savings accounts.  This is the only way to fix social security.  My wife works for the state of California and she has the choice to opt out of social security and place her money into a savings account.  In other words, if you are among the governing elite you can do it, but for those of us in the private sector we have no choice.  It is disgusting!

deerjkydave - the S.S. upper wage limit should increase every

year to keep pace with inflation. I don't consider that a tax increase. Even the rich who have been paying the max will normally take out more than they put in unless they die early.

I agree that S.S. is a pyramid scheme and was not properly thought out. I also agree that either no one or everyone should be allowed to opt out.

I think that says it all about this...person.

Joyless Behar must be

Joyless Behar must be trying hard to win some awards for the 2008 Media Research Center, such as "Most inane liberal comment". (Although Behar did just fine in 2007 and 2006 too).

The left loves you as long as you praise libs and damn conservatives, regardless of how nasty you are, and how silly and devoid of facts your statements. However, I have to think Hillary wouldn't want someone this ridiculous and fact-free to be defending her. It could be too obvious to even the most simple-minded and brainwashed liberal viewer and thus do more harm than good in promoting votes for Hillary.
