Former OMB Director Tells CNBC ‘There’s No Recovery’

The June jobs report was “very disappointing” for the Obama administration and to people looking for work, according to CNBC’s John Harwood. The 80,000 job gains was 20,000 short of expectations, and the unemployment rate was unchanged.

Moody’s economist Mark Zandi, who has often found a bright side to negative reports, reacted that way again saying there were “silver linings” in the report. But former Office of Management and Budget Director James Nussle strongly disagreed with those claims.

After Zandi’s said that “the recovery is intact and moving forward,” and Diane Swonk of Mesirow Financial had agreed with his sense of things.

The 2007-2009 budget director replied, “Recovery? Recovery? Seriously?” Co-host Joe Kernen prodded Nussle, “Are you saying lipstick on a pig?”

“And Obama’s in Ohio right now trying to explain this to a bunch of diners. No way!” Nussle said. “This doesn’t compute to anybody out there. There’s no recovery.” (watch video)

Later in the “Squawk Box” program Rick Santelli took a dig at the CNBC panel for not being “riled” up. “My opinion: the 80,000 fits exactly the feel of the economy and you know I wish our esteemed panel would be a little more riled over these weak numbers. Maybe they can go to Ohio and jump in that crowd and explain to the president what’s going on,” Santelli said.

When former Obama administration official Austan Goolsbee tried to make a claim that Obama was doing better than Bush had, Santelli shouted over him saying: “But less people have jobs! Who cares about Bush. You know that’s the problem Austan, you guys live in the past.”

In February, Obama claimed “the economy is growing stronger -- the recovery is speeding up.” At an April fundraiser, according to Investor’s Business Daily, Obama touted his economic record as “extraordinary progress.” By June, Obama was forced to temper those words saying, “It’s going to take time.”

John Merline at IBD pointed out on May 30, 2012, that the “recovery” hasn’t been extraordinary, “It hasn't even been ordinary.”

“In fact, it's come in well below average on several key indicators compared with the previous 10 economic recoveries, dating back to 1949, according to an IBD analysis of various economic data. And on several measures, the current recovery — which started five months after Obama took office and is now in its 35th month — is the worst on record since World War II,” Merline wrote.

He cited the 1.9 percent job growth and “far worse than average” GDP growth as well as lower income growth (still at negative 5.4 percent) and large deficits.

Disappointing, huh?

Submitted by journoprof on Fri, 07/06/2012 - 12:24pm.

The jobs report was "very disappointing" for the perilously liberal president...it was "very disastrous" for the rest of us...kinda like the Obama administration itself. Obama=one continuous disaster after another.

Media ethics shouldn't be the oxymoron it seems to be.

For the lickspittles in the DNC media, they only care about The Won.

No kidding there's no recovery

Submitted by Blonde on Fri, 07/06/2012 - 12:36pm.

If the "no longer working" were counted in the unemployment rate, it would be 10.9%, not 8.2%. The number of Americans in the workforce has been reduced from 65+% to 63%.....so it makes sense numerically that THAT little adjustment is spot on.

The left wing talking heads' newest talking point regarding the unemployment rate is now to claim that Obama promised 8% unemployment after the stimulus at this point, rather than the 5.6% rate they claimed at the time. More shiny object dodging. I beg to differ.  Don't let the liberals confuse the issue.  Memorize the numbers, and the sources for future reference!

Ken Shepherd blogged this last August, here.  If you look at the Line Graph....there it is in Black and White....and the source document for Ken's graph was the report issued by Obama's Team of Economic Advisors (linked within the link).

[Edited to add]  Here's a link that will give you all the hard numbers I cited above.

Don't worry, they will be reported again IN FORCE

Submitted by gopcongress on Fri, 07/06/2012 - 3:44pm.

Don't worry, those real numbers will be reported back IN FORCE. When?

When Romney is elected, the Senate turns GOP, and the House solidifies toward the Tea Party.

Then we will see all sorts of double-digit numbers, perhaps even as high as 20% for some unemployment stats, all to try to get the sheeple to vote the newly-elected GOP out of office.

If using numbers spewed out by the media correspond to the numbers used to blame Bush for a bad economy at less than 4% unemployment, then expect the 20% number to be bandied about rather handily.

For example: Unless a person over 16 holds at least one full time job, he / she will be counted as unemployed, whether they are on the dole or not. Now, only those on unemployment insurance count as unemployed, and that's way over 8%.

And don't forget....

Submitted by motherbelt on Fri, 07/06/2012 - 4:06pm.

Obama said the stimulus would keep unemployment under 8%!

Now they are all ecstatic that it's dropping enough to get NEAR 8%!

Submitted by seen the light on Sat, 07/07/2012 - 8:19am.

to comment on this every time. No more sitting back waiting for the libs to play nice. Ask them directly, on air, why they dont factor in the folks on disability into their numbers, and the broadening of the term for "disabled', under Obama? Ask them, expose them, be aggressive. No more trying to be popular, or be considered "one of the good ones".

Back when the comrade Dear Ruler was coronated...

Submitted by Dave. on Fri, 07/06/2012 - 1:01pm.

...I said right here at NB (and at a whole bunch of other sites) that there would be no economic recovery of any kind until Obama was run off and his hideous, communist-inspired policies reversed.

I was right then, I am right now, and if the unthinkable happens and the majority of the voting sheeple vote this colossal fraud in for another term, I will be right this time next year.

The propaganda media got him

Submitted by John21 on Fri, 07/06/2012 - 1:04pm.

The propaganda media got him elected by their lies, bias and lack of vetting, they will never admit how badly flawed he is.
They will continue to provide the "Rose Collored Glasses" estimates until we are all broke and homeless. I have no doubt that they will then tell us that the liberal agenda will now provide you with cardboard boxes and government aid to replace a lifestyle.
It is the power that they want, they have already abandoned truth, honesty or integrety for the liberal agenda. They have flushed their credibility to support the most incompetent administration in American history.

Ah

Submitted by NYCMiddle on Fri, 07/06/2012 - 2:11pm.

just wait. A month from now these job numbers will be reduced even further.

80K in jobs? No way, that number is inflated. Just as they always are for Obama.
