Gas Prices Top $1-a-Gallon Higher than Year Ago; Media Don’t Blame Obama

The average price for a gallon of unleaded gasoline hit $3.86 on April 25, more than $1-a-gallon higher than a year earlier and less than 25 cents away from the record high price of gasoline set in July 2008.

In fact, per gallon prices are more than $2 higher than when Obama took office Jan. 20, 2009. Yet the president has been nearly exempt from criticism on the issue of rising prices, despite a six-month drilling moratorium and more regulatory hurdles for industry.

The Business & Media Institute found that out of the 280 oil price stories the network evening shows have aired since the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill, only 1 percent (3 stories) mentioned Obama’s drilling ban or other anti-oil actions in connection with gasoline prices.

Instead of asking whether Obama's anti-oil policies could be increasing the cost of gas, the networks blamed other factors such as Mideast turmoil or the "money game" played by speculators. Certainly, the turmoil in Libya, Egypt and surrounding nations has increased worries about oil production and can influence the price. But the networks also should have looked for explanations much closer to home, like Obama’s many regulatory actions taken against the oil industry.

First there was the drilling ban, which was later overturned by federal courts as illegal. Seahawk Drilling, a Texas-based shallow-water drilling company cited that moratorium as the cause of its bankruptcy filing saying, they “have been adversely affected by the dramatic slowdown in the issuing of shallow-water permits in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico following the Macondo well blowout.”

According to The Heritage Foundation, the Obama administration moved on to a de facto moratorium after the ban was overturned. Add to that the EPA’s desire to regulate the industry’s greenhouse gas emissions and new environmental regulatory hurdles for the Keystone XL pipeline, which would transport crude from Canada to the U.S. and create many American jobs.

Despite all of these actions on the part of the Obama administration, ABC, CBS and NBC evening news shows have barely mentioned them in stories about rising gas prices.

There's a Democrat liberal President to re-elect.

Now, if he were a Republican...well, then it would be different.

See with Democrats in power all that gas tax money etc goes for researching greener ways to do things, so we don't mind $5/gal gas., but with Republicans in power $5/ gal gas benefits Haliburton and the eeeevil Dick Cheneys of the world. Mr Big.

Even locally in Massachusetts during the Boooooooosh gas crisis ...... we were bombarded with reminders on the news where to get the cheapest gas prices.

Now, as they say, cue the crickets.

To blame the BS going on in the middle east is a false canard as the prices have been rising for well over a year and before anyone mentioned the middle east issues.

A presentdent....... can lower taxes on gas, take some from the reserves to HELP A BIT or DO NOTHING LIKE BARRY and he also has squelched any possibility of new drilling.

Sotero, I present strike one, two and three........

Van Halen,

indeed Herman Cain is an impressive guy. But he does not get too much coverage from the media as he does not fit the pattern they want, a liberal African American. A conservative one does not compute with them. The same can be said for Michael Williams, running for the Senate seat being vacated by Senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson. Neil Cavuto likes both of them though.

Remember when Wolf Blitzer

Submitted by Van Halen on Mon, 04/25/2011 - 10:41am.

Remember when Wolf Blitzer was dispatched to the White House to announce the exact date and time through the day over a period of days to weeks where he called out Bush's sagging poll numbers?

Remember when the Left sent their JournOLists to the gas stations to camp there and call out at every moment how fast the prices were going up with Bush?

Well, they can ignore it all they want, but the people are seeing it and they know who's in the White House. His poll numbers are a direct reflection of that. They'll remember again when they go to buy food and clothing.

whether the price of gas was going up or down, it was reported to be a direct result of the Bush administration. Either he was raising the prices to help his buddies in the oil business or he was lowering the prices to "buy the election." The media always put the Bush administration in the most negative light possible. BOB currently enjoys the silence of the media who have not yet figured out how to position the coverage for his maximum benefit. They are working overtime in preparation for 2012.

Submitted by jdhawk on Mon, 04/25/2011 - 11:54am.

Oil prices are rising as a direct result of this administrations policies. duhbama is actually working to remove nuclear, oil, natural gas, and coal production in this country.

Not only that, but he keeps touting "alternative energy" sources and pushing for ever great subsidies for the same. Never mentioning that none of these so-called "alternative energy" resources of wind, solar, and ethanol could ever fill the gap of loss of nuclear, oil, natural gas, and coal.

What duhama is also not mentioning is what "alternative energy" being put into production is four times the cost of nuclear and fossil fuels.

duhbama is clearly to blame for this debacle both in word and deed.

The lamestream media may not be saying anything, but we all get it.

This was just linked on Drudge: Energy in America: EPA Rules Force Shell to Abandon Oil Drilling Plans

[Emphasis mine]

Shell Oil Company has announced it must scrap efforts to drill for oil this summer in the Arctic Ocean off the northern coast of Alaska. The decision comes following a ruling by the EPA’s Environmental Appeals Board to withhold critical air permits. The move has angered some in Congress and triggered a flurry of legislation aimed at stripping the EPA of its oil drilling oversight.

.

At stake is an estimated 27 billion barrels of oil. That’s how much the U. S. Geological Survey believes is in the U.S. portion of the Arctic Ocean. For perspective, that represents two and a half times more oil than has flowed down the Trans Alaska pipeline throughout its 30-year history. That pipeline is getting dangerously low on oil. At 660,000 barrels a day, it’s carrying only one-third its capacity. (click link to read the rest).

Submitted by upcountrywater on Mon, 04/25/2011 - 2:29pm.

If the volume gets much lower, pipeline officials say they will have to shut it down.

At least Carter didn't shut down that project when he was President.

Pipeline Quick Facts

The Trans Alaska Pipeline System was designed and constructed to move oil from the North Slope of Alaska to the northern most ice-free port in Valdez, Alaska.

  • Length: 800 miles.
  • Diameter: 48 inches.
  • Crosses three mountain ranges and over 800 rivers and streams.
  • Cost to build: $8 billion in 1977, largest privately funded construction project at that time.
  • Construction began on March 27, 1975 and was completed on May 31, 1977.
  • First oil moved through the pipeline on June 20, 1977.
  • Over 15 billion barrels have moved through the Trans
  • Alaska Pipeline System. First tanker to carry crude oil from Valdez: ARCO Juneau, August 1, 1977.
  • Tankers loaded at Valdez: 19,625 through April 30, 2008. Storage tanks in Valdez - 18 with total storage capacity of 9.1 million barrels total.
  • The mission of Alyeska’s Ship Escort Response Vessel System is to safely escort tankers through Prince William Sound.

I hope this really infuriates the Congress, to the point that they chop the EPA permanently. I know that shrew Lisa Murkowski is raising hell....as is her democrat colleague. Fox did this report on air as well, and mentioned that all four of the EPA's "Appeal Board" are democrats, and one is an "environmental activist". More foxes in charge of the hen house.

All we are seeing is the prohibition of further American participation in the age of oil by government fiat.  Oil will continue to be the energy resource with the greatest utility to man going forward, but emphasis on its usage and production will shift offshore unless we can dislodge the worthless leftists who are strangling our domestic oil industry.

Gas prices

Submitted by MLee2011 on Mon, 04/25/2011 - 4:32pm.

Gas prices per gallon in Alaska are over $4.00 (like $4.12 in my area. It is up to $10.00 per gallon in some villages. This is criminal! He won't allow Alaska to drill where the oil is. He would like us to freeze to death apparently.

Who owns America anyway, and who owns Alaska? Who owns your state? I say "We the people own America," and each state should manage its own resources and its own affairs.

Of course, Obama said in an interview (which I saw) that with his energy plan, "Gas prices would necessarily skyrocket." So, this is no surprise. He said it himself, so why does the media say it isn't Obama's fault. It is his PLAN for crying out loud! His plans are working out perfectly as I see it -- to destroy America.

How much is the Government take on ObamaGas?

Many have asked how much of the ObamaGas™ and ObamaDiesel™ per gallon costs are Taxes and NOT the actual costs of drilling, transporting, refining and selling. This does NOT include research and fees for leasing drilling sites.

Many have asked why are ObamaGas™ and ObamaDiesel™ per gallon costs different in my State, City or Locale, from other areas?

The charts in this post should answer most if not all of those questions - see for yourself.
