CBS "Evening News" didn't have time for good economic news the night of Sen. Barack Obama's acceptance speech, but they made time for bad news last night before McCain took center stage.
Katie Couric announced "disappointing economic news" about jobs and retail sales on "Evening News" September 4:
“The government reported today that 15,000 more Americans joined the line for unemployment benefits. And despite back-to-school bargains, consumers were not in a spending mood in August. Major retailers reported sales were up just over 1 percent from last year.”
“Just over 1 percent” was actually closer to 2 percent – the International Council of Shopping Centers reported a 1.7-percent increase over August 2007.
Couric’s downbeat assessment lasted 27 seconds and ignored good economic news about gross domestic product (GDP) announced by the Commerce Department August 28. The department revised the second quarter 2008 GDP to 3.3 percent, exceeding economists’ predictions of a 2.3 percent increase. That data confirmed that the
But turn back the clock just one week to the night of Illinois Sen. Barack Obama’s speech at the Democratic National Convention. On August 28, “Evening News” didn’t make any room at all – not even the same 27 seconds – in the broadcast for good news about a jump in gross domestic product.
NBC "Nightly News" also ignored the surge in GDP the night of Obama's "economic is in turmoil" speech, while ABC's "World News with Charles Gibson took 13 seconds to mention it, as Brent Baker wrote that night."
The Business & Media Institute found that throughout the Democratic convention, the news media helped reinforce Obama's negative economic views by echoing his rhetoric or leaving it unchallenged.

Bad Economy
September 5, 2008 - 12:38 ET by billbJobs were lost in all sectors EXCEPT government where jobs increased by 15,000. Sounds like the Obama bandwagon.
And I bet
September 5, 2008 - 13:38 ET by mbuelThose 15,000 jobs are un-necessary. :)
Palin has accomplished great things, while Obama has continued to make empty promises that the world owes you a living.
Economy
September 5, 2008 - 12:43 ET by rick007Has anybody noticed that the downfall in the economy is tied to high energy prices caused by the Dem's?
Not drilling for oil and gas here in America.
They want the Saudis and rhe other Araib countries to help bring our economy down before the elections.
Have you seen pic's of the worlds tallest building in Dubai built with our money because of the Democrats?
I hear it has a clinton room and a Biden toilet.
This is their plan to dump on Bush.
How can you tell when O Dumby is lying? His ears flap.
At A Minimum
September 5, 2008 - 13:01 ET by Copperhead RidgeI wonder how the increase in the minimum wage figures into a 6.1% jump in unemployment.
Gee, the stock market is
September 5, 2008 - 13:19 ET by SickofLibsGee, the stock market is down 30% or so, but retail sales were UP *JUST* over 1%? How is this possible?
Disappointing economic news indeed.
I'd love to be the invisible man in one of Couric's production meetings right before going on air: "So what else can we say is really bad? C'mon, gimme something better than that - I'm on air in 90 seconds, you dolts!"
here's an interesting one
September 5, 2008 - 13:37 ET by mbuelIs Bush to blame for this:
http://www.canada.co...
Canada's Jobless rate also hit 6.1% in August.
HMM, must be Bush's fault.
Palin has accomplished great things, while Obama has continued to make empty promises that the world owes you a living.
Of course!
September 5, 2008 - 13:42 ET by Mr. BishopRemember, the economy is directly altered based upon what people in office... Oh, I can't continue on in this...
Liberals are clueless as to what does and does not effect economies. Apparently, they are unable to grasp that economies now are global, and not local. What effects one, effects all. The economy of the United States is effected by anything that happens in the world. War, terrorist attacks, economy collapses in other countries, oil prices -- all of it directly effects the US economy and other world economies.

reality versus liberals
September 5, 2008 - 13:54 ET by mbuelwell it's just like with Obama challenging the RNC not addressing "policy issues", NO, they addressed what is wrong with government, taxes are too high, and our energy policy sucks. (McCain went into some healthcare crap as well.)
BUT, the truth of the matter is that he doesn't consider those problems. The only policy issues worth discussing are those he and his liberal compatriots consider worthy of discussing.
The truth about those policy issues is that they would hurt the American economy and the American people.
Of course the economy is global now. Liberals are myopic and ignore the truth. You see the truth never changes but the dressing they put on their idiotic marxist philosophy does. This year it's a young black man who's charismatic.
Palin has accomplished great things, while Obama has continued to make empty promises that the world owes you a living.
Certainly so
September 5, 2008 - 13:59 ET by Mr. BishopIn fact, as far as the "energy policies" of McCain (and Obama), he fails in one regard to actually visualize the future of some on his ideals. For instance, switching vehicles to Natural Gas before getting something better -- you do that, and the price of Natural Gas will sky-rocket. The biggest reasoning is because it is used mostly for fueling our homes. If you start fueling our cars with it on a grand scale, the price will go up dramatically because of the amounts used for homes (stoves, dryers, heating).
Sounds like a great idea, but doesn't take into account the future of that decision. Again, what effects one aspect, will effect all. So, again we run into this problem that liberals don't grasp.

totally agree with you on this one
September 5, 2008 - 14:06 ET by mbuelYeah, Thankfully he's got Palin by his side to set him straight where he is wrong on globull warming and "energy policy".
Switching to Diesel would be better, we would use 25% less fuel (at least.. some of the diesel hybrids get 50 - 75% better mileage), and it would only require building more refineries (which needs to be done anyways!)
I wonder if McCain is going to regret picking someone who won't pander to the big washington types, like T. Boone?
I brought up the Candadian unemployment numbers to a liberal here at work, and he stated;
"Yeah that's good."
Then I showed him our numbers;
"That's really bad, it would be better around 5.0%"
??? His reasoning is that Canada has a better social safety net.
no... the reason they have higher unemployment in Canada and Europe is because of their safety net governments.
Palin has accomplished great things, while Obama has continued to make empty promises that the world owes you a living.

BBC states American Economy on Rebound
September 5, 2008 - 15:02 ET by Lame CherryBBC on Wednesday night, Sept. 3rd, announced the American economy was rebounding and growing with no recession or problems in sight.
They stated the housing market was still a problem, but America was in the clear and that the British were going to face 6 more months of a recession.
The American left should actually LOOK AT THE ENTIRE NUMBERS and not just at that number of jobs lost, which seems to be from homosexual Ford and GM spending more time on gay agendas than making vehicles which get Honda gas mileage and actually run.
The numbers the leftists cite are bogus in no indication of the economy at all.
To put it plainly, the Newsbuster's staff has bucks to spend as they are middle income. The rich like Buffet make billions more preying on the poor. The poor are the ones getting squeezed as always by illegals pouring in taking low rent housing, cheap cars, driving up commodity prices in food and gas with the added problem of emptying out thrift stores where poor Americans pinch by.
So in the 4 economic layers in America, the American poor are the only ones hurting in mass, but as they are always getting screwed over by real estate robber barons driving up housing costs and Democrats ruining their chance at start up business and jobs, the liberals noting a story that reflects more on gay policy and gas price policy which they inflicted on America is mud on them.
Oh and when did the American economy begin to have problems and gas prices rose?
When Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid took control of the Congress.
Imagine that.

Recession?
September 5, 2008 - 16:14 ET by iveseenitallThe Dems, the MSM, and Barry himself have called the slowdown a "recession" many times over. Haven't had one, have we? Fool, blowhards, and hypocrites.
NEVER,NEVER trust a "liberal"
Poor Katie
September 5, 2008 - 16:37 ET by AndyRMs. Couric has gone from a perky, young liberal to a bitter, old liberal. All in the span of less than a year.
So much fun to watch.
Forgive me for my shallow
September 5, 2008 - 19:03 ET by mostlymoderateForgive me for my shallow insults, but Katie Couric looks so bad these days. See what being unhappy all the time will do to your looks?
Try again.

CBS News Ratings in the tank
September 6, 2008 - 20:48 ET by kenman923This is the big reason why CBS News ratings are in the tank. They hire people like Dan Rather and Katie Couric and they fire Bernard Goldberg because they disagree with him.
