BMI's Gainor: Media Negativity on Economy Hurts Consumer Confidence

Dan Gainor, Vice President for the Business & Media Institute, blamed part of people's gloomy perception of the economy on the "constant drumbeat" of negativity coming from the news media. Gainor appeared on Fox Business Network's "Cavuto" May 20.

"Almost 23 million people watch evening news every night. That has an affect and that's almost 1/10 of the American population. Those are people who are shoppers, who are buyers. It affects people and just the constant drumbeat of negativity here from the mainstream media affects people even at high incomes," said Gainor.

The show's host Neil Cavuto seemed to agree, "If this continues and this perception becomes reality, we've got hell to pay to here."

"Well, I mean, fortunately despite the media onslaught on this issue they haven't gotten what they've wanted," continued Gainor. "But we're seeing to some extent a repeat of 1992. Where ‘it's the economy, stupid' is the driving force of an election campaign ... Where you can't turn anywhere without hearing about them [negative economic news]."

It's the bad Economy propaganda still,

"There they go again...." mischaracterizing the news to fit the Liberal story line. Thank goodness that John McCain has been fighting back on incorrect news presentations. Maybe his campaign can get the word out that today's economy is better than during most of the Clinton years.

The lack of responsible, informative

responses to the constant broadcast & print media negativity is a HUGE minus for the Republican Party. WHERE ARE OUR LEADERS???? We need a spokesman/woman to DAILY report on the GOOD things that are happening in our country. EVERY DAY there can be an announcement of positive accomplishments! We are NOT in a recession and it is high time that someone such as Tony Snow or Dana Perino is assigned the task of stating that regardless of whether the news reporters follow through. I think we, the great unwashed masses, need a little encouragement every now and then...PLEASE someone get the good news out there!!! Personally I don't think the msm will print a positive article on our economy until a Democrat is elected president! It's time to say bye-bye to the msm!!! Their reporting does NOT have the best interests of America at heart!

media neg. hurts confidence - no kidding

(note - can't get video to play??)

Almost 23 million people watch evening news every night -- that's 1/10. Note, that's more like 1/5 of the probable voters in the upcoming fall elections.

But of course, voters are finding out all about the MSM's view of the economy via more outlets than the evening news. The cable news and views (biased) go all day long. And there's newspapers, NPR Radio, PBS news, and the grocery store magazines (Newsweek and Time). Voters are getting the same story from almost every where they turn.

Fact is, a recent Times/Bloomberg poll said that 81% of us believe that we are in a recession. Problem is, we are not in a recession. Might have looked to some like we might have been heading in that direction - but the media kept telling the consumer that we were in one - and they went  out and polled it.

If they polled it, the last time we looked like we were heading into a recession, i.e., fall of 2000 (election season), this same media sure as heck had nointerest in putting it on the news back then.

Media's influence

I have to say I thought things were bad with the economy before I did my own research due to the MSM's spin on it.  The past few months the economy is climbing, but that won't be broadcast as its an election year and the liberals have to make the republicans look at bad as possible.  Ridiculous

I've been telling this to

I've been telling this to anyone who would listen for about a year now. Unfortunately, most wouldn't listen. They had "the facts" from [fill-in MSM outlet], and that's what they believed.

Face it, the new definition of "recession" is the economy under any Republican president. It worked under Bush I, and got Clinton elected, so they'll trot it out again.

Indiana Joe

I run into the same situation. One of my neighbors told me that she knew that the country was in a recession because she heard it on GMA and they were quoting an article from the LAT. She got mad at me when I laughed at her sources.

Media Negativity on Economy Hurts Consumer Confidence

Gee.... ya think?

Talking down the economy

The democrat media has been doing that since the first case of BDS showed up. They couldn't quite get the hang of it until the democrats took control of congress. Now between the two they have made rapid progress at destroying the economy and the American people along with it. Rumor of the day, $12 per gallon gas coming. I hate to tell the democrat elitest communist P'sOS that there will be no one working to provide the tax money for the excessive spending you have already comitted to, like the taxpayer rip off farm bill. For a fact you, as congress critters will have to volunteer your time since there will be no funds to pay you, if you try to take pay at the expense of everyone else  the American people will rise up and hang all of your sorry a**es a couple of years earlier than they will anyway. It's coming, I'm old but hope to live long enough to see it. Even the educated elitest will want you dead when they find the college education doesn't even qualify them for farm work.

Old, Retired and glad of it.
