Los Angeles city councilwoman Jan Perry wants district residents to eat their carrots, instead of fast food.
In order to make food choices for her constituents, Perry wants to ban new fast-food restaurants from opening in the South L.A. district for at least a year.
CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta ate up the plan for regulatory meddling saying on "American Morning" November 16, "[A]lthough obesity may not be eliminated entirely, studies show zoning laws are a good first step to fighting the problem."
Gupta even repeated Perry's unusual claim that “in some places in her district it’s easier to get a handgun than it is to get some of these fruits and vegetables.” If true, that might explain why grocery stores and restaurants are reluctant to do business in

When those folks sued McDonalds for their obesity, someone joked (at least I think it was a joke) that McD's and others could be held repsonsible for their illness, just like bartenders could be held for serving someone too many drinks, if that patron went out and drove drunk and killed someone.
Can't you just see it?
#2 Cheeseburger meal, supersize the fries, please.
Sorry, sir, you're already obese, I can't serve you anything but the salad with light dressing.

I am so glad I don't live
November 16, 2007 - 17:29 ET by fitzfongI am so glad I don't live in LA anymore. Obnoxious, recylced turds like Jan Perry, Janice Hahn, Eric Garcetti, Jack Weiss and disgraced former police chief Bernard Parks keep getting elected to the City Council to pass retarded nanny-state bills like this one that end up causing irreparable damage to the city. Then they steal taxpayer money to pay exorbitant settlements out to shakedown artists claiming racism. They work in conjunction with the labor goonions to intimidate legitimate businesses from coming into the community to expand their tax base...then they complain about the poverty that THEY caused. And the dumb voters keep rewarding the behavior be re-electing them. Most of these idiots are elected simply by name recognition...either because they got much local media coverage over the years or through nepotism.
And it's always the fat ones like Jan Perry who crusade against fast food chains to the detriment of those they claim to be helping. A few years ago, an obese legislator by the name of Debra Ortiz tried a similar socialist scam on the soda companies. She wanted to add a supplemental tax on the purchase of each can of soda to fund a school program that was supposed to teach children not to drink soda. And she was going to tack it on at the distribution level...effectively creating a double tax at the retail level. In presenting the idea, she was a typically condescending, know-it-all finger wagger. Fortunately a couple of KFI radio hosts exposed this attempted fraud and killed it before it had a chance to pass.

Well, if people won't choose them, you'll have to force them, right?
When those folks sued McDonalds for their obesity, someone joked (at least I think it was a joke) that McD's etc. could be held liable for obesity and illeness, like a bartender could be held liable if he kept serving drinks to someone who shouldn't ahve more, and that person went out and drove drunk and killed someone.
Can't you just picture this:
I'll have a #2 with cheese, supersized please.
Sir, you're obese already. I can't give you that. I can give you a salad with light dressing, or the fat-free frozen yogurt. That's all, I'm sorry.
Sorry about the double posting....I couldn't find the other one earlier, thought something had gone wrong, so I redid it.
This has been the situation
November 16, 2007 - 18:33 ET by RackieThis has been the situation for decades. You gotta wonder who put this burr under her saddle.
Years ago I saw a TV press conference called by Black community leaders scolding the fastfood industry for not locating their stores in ghetto areas. They called it a form of racisim that they were not allowed to benefit.
Fast forward to today and they are singing a different tune.
Here's a discussion on the ghetto/grocery situation.

Er - Dr. Gupta - wouldn't people still have to choose to eat in a "healthy restaurant" - whatever that is? And exactly how much is a dinner going to cost at these "healthy restaurants"? Will Coucilwoman Perry next propose a price lid on these "healthy restaurants" she thinks will flock to open in her neighborhood, once fast food restaurants are banned? Liberals, like Perry, operate on the level of a seventh grade social studies class...

November 17, 2007 - 11:45 ET by seanrobinsYep, this is all a very good idea... Like banning Walmarts from Chicago, and thus driving business and city spending OUT of the city... it's a really good idea to ban fast food in poor neighborhoods, so that people will spend what little money they do have to spend, somewhere OTHER than their own neighborhoods.
Congrats, gang. What a really good idea.
And, way to go, Sanjay. As we all know, the Communists know best how to impose good quality health care on their people. (That's why under the newly-reCommunisting Russian Empire, the health of Russians has never been better)
