Watch this video where Chris Matthews displays his utter lack of class with Keith Olbermann. While almost every other journalist and blogger on both sides of the political spectrum are giving condolences and highlighting Russert’s deserved credit of being one of the most fair and unbiased journalists of today’s media, Chris Matthews used the opportunity to go off on an anti-war rant. He added insult by comparing him to the “American people” in the sense of being fooled by the Bush administration into supporting the war. Besides displaying how opposite he is than Russert on the subject of bias, he had to go on and add his own elitist touch by presenting himself as a superior journalist.
Even Keith Olbermann knew better than to go there, changing the subject quickly after Matthews’ rant. He provided a moment of irony later when the two most biased “journalists” on television heralded Russert’s objectivity as if they understood what the word meant. Neither Olbermann or Matthews could carry Russert’s shoes, and Matthews in particular proved why last night.
One might be tempted to give Matthews a pass, as the shock of his friend’s passing had to be hard on him, and one could see the pain. However, Matthews makes clear that he deliberately chose to make this point, leading with, “This might be tricky,” and later saying that he had spent two hours preparing for the delivery of this anecdote. The choice of casting Russert as a dupe within hours of his death was deliberate.
Asked by a justifiably teary-eyed Keith Olbermann to reflect on the sudden death, Mr. Matthews professed his love and admiration, calling Mr. Russert “everyman”, a “true patriot”, “Mr. America” — by which he meant that the Meet the Press moderator had supported the Iraq invasion because of the trumped-up threat of nukes. …
It’s hard to fathom a soul so craven that he would use a eulogy to resurrect his timeworn attack on the stagecraft of the Bush administration. But the overflow of Chris Matthews’ darkened heart also spilled onto the rest of us ‘patriotic Americans’ who were fooled by what Bush-Cheney Inc. was “selling.” In a nutshell, we’re all just a bunch of hard-working dopes like Tim Russert.
I completely agree with everything Scott said above except that is hard to fathom. I’ve seen Chris Matthews be an opportunist elitist so many times, this comes as no surprise. Of course it still disgusts me. However, this is definitely crossing the line from partisan hack to the realm of total scum.

This was Predictable...but I didn't want to say / Assume it
June 14, 2008 - 13:17 ET by JayTeeHis Chair isn't even Cold at NBC, and already they are leveraging his Demise for Ratings and Obama electioneering, as Loyal fans tune in, only to See What's his name violate the Image of Tim.
This will be such an "opposing" view of Tim, they may LOSE the Viewers forever.
It's gonna look like an NFL Talking head Replacement TRYOUT at NBC, people..... Turn off the Station if you want to remember Russet
The Republican Revolution will not be Televised
What a shocker!
June 14, 2008 - 13:42 ET by capitolguyOlbermann and Matthews have no class whatsoever. And the suits at NBC wonder why their ratings continue to tank? Meet The Press was their only impartial newscast. I am certain that will now change.
Matthews
June 14, 2008 - 14:06 ET by NKurucI agree with you wholeheartedly. Matthews is reprehensible. He is cocky, without reason. His ego is second to none except perhaps Olberman. Both of these idiots have taken MSNBC to an all time low in terms of validity as a news channel. If any of the fools in charge of NBC/MSNBC even give any thought to Matthews as a replacement for Russert they will be truly branded crazy. One can only hope that this network (MSNBC), and the crazies it employs goes the way of all other useless media crap when the election is over.

June 14, 2008 - 17:59 ET by motherbeltMy mother (God rest her soul) would have said: No class, all a$$.
It did cause me a chuckle when Olbie talked about Russert's neutrality..."a neutrality that most of us dream of...."
Keith, I doubt you even dream about being neutral.

June 14, 2008 - 13:32 ET by U.S.S. NixonYeah I saw that. But thats the difference between Russert and Matthews.. One is a joke the other one is a great american.

Methinks there is a screw loose
June 14, 2008 - 13:35 ET by Jonah JohansenI was speculating this morning about Russert’s possible replacement
and it seemed that Matthews was the logical choice.
I thought Matthews primary negative was his steady move from
maintaining the facade of a fair minded liberal (in the Russert mold) to a
angry Bush hating conservative bashing Obama worshiping leftist (in the
Olberman mold).
I thought the wisest thing he could do, if he wanted the Meet
the Press job and wanted the show to succeed, is to make a hasty move to the
center and try to pick up Russert's mantle of being
"fair". [It is not that Russert was always fair and un-biased,
but in comparison to his colleagues gross unfairness and bias, he seemed less doctrinaire
and prone to repeat Democratic party talking points]
Given Abrams and some of the other leftists that now run MSNBC and
NBC maybe what Matthews did was a good career move. But from the perspective
of virtually the whole rest of the political spectrum and the large majority of
American, who see the media as biased and don't like it. I think it was a colossal blunder, not to
mention just plain despicable.
Considering this and the increasing number of stupid off the
wall, speak without thinking, and{well documented by Newsbusters} a case of
foot in mouth disease which seems to be getting worse; one has to wonder what’s
wrong with the guy, mentally.

June 14, 2008 - 14:11 ET by GregEI saw this on TV and just had to shake my head at Matthews. He's talking up Russert, then suddenly does exactly what Russert would not do.
Why did he do it? Even in the death of a great journalist and friend, he still cannot HELP using that time to do a rant on a topic he's highly opinionated on, using Tim as the prop to be able to do it.
Libs literally cannot control themselves.
Are these guys competing for...?
June 14, 2008 - 14:22 ET by goldenthroatWhy should we be surprised at Chris Matthew's left-coast, bleeding-heart, 'do as I say, not as I do', incompetent, insensitive and crass form of 'journalism'? This pathetic excuse for a news commentator, along with that nincompoop Olbermeister, for their complete lack of empathy toward the Russert family, have given new meaning to the term 'yellow journalism'.
They apparently are both competing for 'jackass of the year' - it's going to be a close vote!
They both should have been fired long ago - then again, they both work for a liberal network, so don't count on it to happen anytime soon.

I too watched this
June 14, 2008 - 14:47 ET by Captain RepusI too watched this disgracful performance by Matthews and it didn't surprise me at all. People like Chrissy and Olberman have not a trace of class. At least Olberman was smart enough to turn off the partisan hate for a few hours, but Matthews couldn't wait to turn on his childish dagger throwing. The only thing missing was for him to call for the indictment of Cheny to make up for the loss of Russert.
It should be really entertaining to watch these two minor league hacks start auditioning for the Russert spot. Little do they know that Russert was the only, I repeat only reason their network had even a hint of ligitimacy, and now with the pigmies, including both of them, Mitchell , Shuster and Abrams left to man the oars, they are on a fast track to insignificance.
Sorry, but I do not believe
June 14, 2008 - 15:34 ET by TESorry, but I do not believe Matthews' unsubstantiated allegation that Russert ever supported America's war in Iraq. It would take ten or fifteen people, who are not leftists in the Washington press corps, to convince me that Russert ever supported America's effort.
It's About Time
June 14, 2008 - 15:38 ET by rammingspeedMr. Stephenson, I'm glad to see you say the truth: Chris Matthews is pure scum. Not because of his politics, but because of his behavior. He gets away with saying the vilest, most hideous things because there's no one to call him out in the mainstream news media.
Shame on Chris Matthews; double shame on the mainstream news media.

Reflections
June 14, 2008 - 16:13 ET by sam.i.amThe death of Russert hits these MSNBC guys especially hard. It gives them a chance to think about how they would be remembered--and it ain't pretty.
Russert was as close to objective as any mainstream journalist has ever been in the past 20 years. He was a family man, positive, jovial, and apparently, universally well-liked.
Gregory, Matthews, and Olbie will not be fondly remembered or eulogized by The President, the VP, and people all along the political spectrum. That's gotta hurt!
Upon reflection, do they change a little to emulate Russert or dig in their heels and remain bitter partisans?
We have the answer for Matthews.
Wallace = Olbermann = Behar = Idiots
June 14, 2008 - 16:44 ET by jefflebowskiThere really is no difference between them and others of this ilk. This election cycle has shown everyone that they are not impartial journalists but political hacks.
I don't watch their shows because everything that comes out of their mouths is biased. Also, I detest liberals.

June 14, 2008 - 17:50 ET by bigtimerI heard this yesterday...I listened again today here...nothing new at all with Matthews or Olbie either as far as I am concerned, I watched Olbie with his big sorrowful supposed grief yesterday...they both are pitiful extreme leftists with not an ounce of brains...as far as Olbie saying Russert will be missed for him correcting him on what should or shouldn't be said (I'm paraphrasing)...I don't believe that he is telling the truth...if he is...well, I'll leave that to to others to come to there own conclusions.
Both are despicable, disgusting people.

June 14, 2008 - 19:08 ET by Redrowan2000Gee I'm glad Chris took the time to remember Russert and in the same spiel bash Bush. What a surprise. Chris is biased, ignorant and admits to getting chills up and down his leg when he hears Hussein speak. The other vulture was a surprise . Maybe he wants MTP on Sundays.
Any truth to the rumor that Olbermann was there and just handed Russert a cup of coffee?

What an arrogant jerk!
June 14, 2008 - 19:08 ET by PrairieSkyYou know, just when I think that Chris Matthews can't get any more arrogant and insufferable, he does or says something that proves me wrong. The gall of him using the death of Tim Russert as an opportunity to yet again spew his anti-Iraq war sentiments is beyond the pale.
And Matthews' comments basically saying the American people, Russert included, were patriotic (liberal translation=stupid) enough as to be duped into supporting the war because of the alleged "lies" that we were told concerning the production of WMD's, specifically nukes, is yet another example of his misguided belief in his own supposed intellectual superiority. I wish somebody would sew this guy's mouth shut.
