Update: Video of Huckabee's Press Conference.
Was it a change of heart or manipulating the media? My personal opinion is of the latter, and I've gathered several reactions from other bloggers that seem to agree. The way the media is reporting it right now, Mike just made a stupid mistake and it is backfiring already.
Here is what happened via the Caucus:
Mike Huckabee is holding a press conference right now in which he was supposed to unveil a new negative ad against arch rival Mitt Romney.
But Mr. Huckabee came to the press conference and announced he’d had a change of heart and would not be broadcasting the ad after all.
But wait! It gets better.
He then broadcast it for a room crammed with reporters, photographers and television cameras.
The assembled media found the display hilarious and at several points laughed out loud.
Telling you what’s in the ad, of course, plays into Mr. Huckabee’s strategy of getting his message out — Mr. Romney is bad — while being able to say his hands are clean.
So was it an innocent change of heart at the last minute, or a planned political move? If it is the latter, does he really think the media and Iowans are that stupid? Is Huckabee that stupid?
Personally, I agree with Joe Klein:
I don't think so. Not with all those monster oppo "Enough is Enough" charts surrounding Huckabee with facts and figures about Romney's alleged depravities–on taxes, abortion, immigration, guns and judicial appointments. (Huckabee's partially-birthed ad slags Romney for, among other things, offering a $50 co-pay for abortions in Massachusetts.)
That sound you hear rumbling out of Des Moines appears to be a monumental implosion.
Here is Huckabee's negative ad if you want to see it.

What the heck
December 31, 2007 - 20:36 ET by MikeknaJWhat the heck? I ask again, what does this have to do with "exposing and combating liberal media bias," which is what this site is supposed to be about?
We get it. You don't like Huckabee. I'd appreciate your rants against him going somewhere else, though, and leaving Newsbusters articles to focus on the site's stated mission.
I'm sure some more anti-Mike types will jump in after this and pile on now...

What He Was Trying To Do
December 31, 2007 - 21:01 ET by BourbeauHuckabee was trying to pull a fast one, and use the liberal press as his agents. He wanted to get this Romney ad out, without having to pay for the distribution. So, he called his press conference, delivered his usual blather about running a positive campaign, then showed the ad that I'm certain was on every news outlet in Iowa, as well as all the major networks. Now what that shows is that Huckabee, along with his other Hope AR native, Slick Willy, have no problem playing political three card monte - and they're good at it. In a way, I'm glad he did it because I think it will backfire. I think people will see, only too clearly, the Presidency is not a place for a rookie political con artist. And as it pertains to the brain trusts from Hope AR, I merely add, "Fool us once, shame on you; fool us twice shame on us." It's not going to happen twice.

Huckabee is a religious liberal, he is being pushed by pro-lifers who will be pissed when they actually see his record on everything else. If on your top 10 issues, 1-5 are abortion, he's your guy. Some of these people are eay to spot, they will have about a dozen bumberstickers touting their issue. Don't get me wrong, abortion sucks, but it's not even close to the top issue for me.
Coulter said something interesting, look at Huckster's record, against my 2 guys, Rudy or Mitt. Mike operated as a very liberal Republican in a swing state. Mitt & Rudy operated to the right in NYC & in MA, not exactly freindly toward Republicans. I want results, Rudy & Mitt got them. I also believe crisis management should be a big issue, & Rudy scores very high with me there. I want a tough SOB who won't fold like a chair the way Jimmy Carter did, I want whoever to use that chair over someone's head in need be. I think Rudy will be that guy.
The more everybody knows about Huckabee, the more he looks like Jimmy Carter.

If it looks like one of these pretenders are going to get the nomination, then it may be a darn good idea to start a new 3rd party. I would call it "The Conservative Party" and recruit Fred and Duncan to run!

December 31, 2007 - 22:37 ET by shawn228I will be totally honest with you. I do not know as much as should about Fred Thompson. I know he is what many on this site considered all true conservative. What I do know CT is that in the lastest poll. Thompson is pulling something 1 percent in the latest poll in Iowa.
Yes I know you have said you do not believe in polls. Sometimes they are off and sometimes the poll is biased and inaccurate.
The thing is when an election is only a few days away, the polls are usually dead on accurate. No polls are saying Romney or Huckabee will win, they have them at a statistical tie. Just like Bush/Kerry was a statistical tie and it all came down to Ohio right? Polls have also said the Dems would take the house and that came true, they were wrong about the senate I admit, when the Dems took that too.
Unless there is some miricle, Fred Thompson will be lucky finishing third.

I also found this gem during my search:
"They might be even more skeptical of Gallup's tracking poll if they knew that the swings are due in large part to the company's nightly sample having large fluctuations in how many Democrats vs. Republicans are interviewed. One three-night sample, on Oct. 4, had 37% Democrats and 30% Republicans. Perhaps not surprisingly, Al Gore had an 11-point lead. Three nights later, on Oct. 7, a completely new sample consisted of 39% Republicans and only 31% Democrats. Lo and behold, George W. Bush suddenly had an eight-point lead." - Wall Street Journal (John Fund)

There really is no clear winner, and we don't know what the heck those people are going to do once they get inside! Woo-hoo!Of course, the Ohio guy was right; Iowa doesn't really make any difference, except to scrape the silt from the bottom of the barrel and leave us with the cream that rose to the top.

Tell me how Romney will be bad for free speech. Heck, after Bush shredded the Constitution, what's left for Mitt to tackle?
I see you believe, or at least are interested in "universal health care" and euthanasia. One would most like lead to the other. I don't want to be a buzzkill, but WTF?
If you are thinking the government needs to be in charge of your health, with all due respect, you're nuts! Ask all of the Canadian women, with problem pregnancies, that are parked here in the US, 'cause Canada's rationed health care system doesn't have the doctors to handle the problems. Ask those in England what they think of their system, with it's filthy conditions, rampant staph infections, and overall poor care. I could go on.....
If anything, the government should deregulate the insurance industry, allowing companies to have a fifty state rule book, rather than having to conform to fifty different states boards of insurance. That would make insurance more affordable. Like every other problem in the world, the business sector can cost effectively solve it, and provide a better service, at a better price. All one has to do is compare Fed Ex with the post office. It ain't even a contest.

coverage and one bad accident or disease can ruin anybody financially
for the rest of their lives. That is my point of view and it is an
important voting issue for me.
Shawn, it's starting to
January 1, 2008 - 04:14 ET by BlazerShawn, it's starting to get hard to take you serious and I'm sure you'll understand.
Your starting to talk about all of your friend's in Vancouver. I am a native in the American southeast and I no of no one in Vancouver, BC.
If by luck you had one friend there, I am sure you would not have many more aquantances there. If I am not mistaken, do you not reside in North Carolina or Florida? If not I apologize, to you and every one else on 21 Jumpstreet.
I am sure you do not have "many friend's" in Vancouver like you proclaim you have.
Go bullshit somewhere and someone else, may i suggest DKOS ?
They will believe that heartfelt, feel good tripe over there.

Wow Blazer
January 1, 2008 - 04:16 ET by shawn228Did not expect for you to call me a liar, especially on New Years Eve., just watched Dick Clark count down a few minutes ago. Hope it is the alchohol talking :-)
I live nowhere close to North Carolina and I live in the Bay Area i'm sure not too far away from Noel.
I spent much of my youth growing up in Canada and I have made no secret of it, ask Unsane.
Go bullshit somewhere and someone else, may i suggest DKOS ?

I actually like Newsbusters Blazer, I would actually expect to hear that comment from Cool Arrow Blazer but not you.
Then I apologize Shawn,
January 1, 2008 - 04:32 ET by BlazerThen I apologize Shawn, but keep in mind there's no moratorium on the time of year someone's called a bullshitter, and Dick clark's been dead for 15 yrs. Now when you say "bay area", what do you mean...being there's many area's with bay's in the U.S.
Doesn't matter regaurdless. If it's "The Bay Area", your still a long a$$ way's from Vancouver and just as a coincidence, about the same amount of distance from Richmond, Va., and me running into a long lost uncle, or some ol' school chum's in St. John's New Foundland.

January 1, 2008 - 04:47 ET by shawn228FYI, I have dual citizenship. I choose to live in the United States of American because I believe it is the greatest country in the world.
I have told you this in the past. I remember I was telling another poster that I grew up in Vancouver BC and you responded and said "that figures". . will find the link if you want me to. I have no idea why you thought I live in Florida.
The Bay Area means close to San Jose, Oakland and San Francisco.I have been called a bleeding liberal, troll and many other mean names but rarely a liar. You could have asked me why I know people in Vancouver without telling me to use my tripe in DKOS.
edit
I will just chalk it up to the alchohol talking, I am off to bed. Good night.
I apologize
January 1, 2008 - 05:37 ET by BlazerI apologize wholeheartedly for mistaking you Shawn with someone else and on your current citenship and locale.
I'll pretend about unlesss proven otherwise your dedication and loyalty to this country.
You can start by not preaching the virtues of Canada.
I for one am not "otherworldly" and could give a rat's A$$ what happen's in other countrie's or what they think of us, especially Canada.
Just keep in mind I cant' apologize for the actual response to your recent post's and politic's, that part rides true.
Now dont' take the highroad and say you think's it's alcohol talking on my behalf, when earlier you admitted to popping copious amount's of Vicodin.
My politic's, value's and ideaologies dont' change from day to day like your's do.
Now there are some here, that thought you needed the right amount of convincing to turn comservative.
I think you came here to for the express purpose of being convinced otherwise and are patronizing us.
Start taking a stand and defending your issues without all the nuanced bullsh't and grab assing you put up.
Your either on one side of the fence or the either.

Sigh, I am not preaching the virtues of Canada, your the one that wanted me to try to convince you, remember saying this?
"I'll buy you a Detroit Tiger's hat and spot ya' sixty pound's and throw
in some Halliburton and Exxon stock if you you can prove us wrong. "
'My politic's, value's and ideaologies dont' change from day to day like your's do. "
My politics have always stayed the same Blazer, I might have shifted a
little to the right about issues like abortion and I am always willing
to listen to someones point of view.
"I think you came here to for the express purpose of being convinced otherwise and are patronizing us."
I do not come to NB with the express purpose of patronizing anybody
and If you find a little sarcasm patronizing, too bad because what is
good for the goose......

I thought NB was for healthy debate and I agree with conservatives
on many issues. If there are some issues I do agree with, you are
implying I have to meet Lucifer himself?
Hey apologize for being
January 1, 2008 - 13:16 ET by BlazerHey apologize for being an ass last night. I in no way want' you to meet Lucifer, just please dont' vote for her.
Your correct, on many issues you do steer right, but it's a little hard for me to believe that you would think the Democrat party would be better for free speech or that Hillary Clinton would be better for America than Mitt Romney.
If your in the ballpark on conservatism those two issues alone put you way up in the upperdeck.
It's the Democrat's that want to shut down all debate and opposing viewpoint's. You vote for Hillary especially, and I'll assure you you'll be handing your firearm over, right along with your wallet.
Once again sorry for being so asinine last night.

A region by a body of water as well

important voting issue for me. So, essentially, government exists to inoculate people from life. Right?
I mean I do not
believe in affirmative action or even welfare, but I would like to not
lose my money over medcial bills just like I don't believe I should be
in debt in I have to have the help of a police officer or firefighter. And power-trippers and firefighters are not necessary to live life, as doctors are not. I haven't had to see a doctor in years because I take care of myself and drive carefully. Therefore I am not paying for a doctor. Yet people want to punish and steal from me because I am doing the right things. Oh, and not to mention, while I am healthy, accumulating money so that if something DOES happen, it WON'T bankrupt me.
Savings accounts. Smart living and sound decisions. Freewill.
How much longer, shawn, before you begin demanding I pay for your insurance...your car, your mortgage, your cable, your groceries...?

January 3, 2008 - 01:34 ET by shawn228sigh.....I know very well your opinion about this subject. I just wanted to point out to Blazer that it was an important voter issue for me.
I support the troops in Iraq and I want us to finish our mission no matter how much it cost, the thing is close to half the population of the United States does not agree with the war, yet their tax dollars are supporting this war.
How much longer, shawn, before you begin demanding I pay for your

Probably never but if you want to pay for my cable that would be great, Comcast charges an arm and two legs.:-)
btw, how are you enjoying your new place?

January 4, 2008 - 00:27 ET by UnsaneSorry, but you still don't have any business, and never will have any business, picking my pocket and helping yourself to my money to pay for YOUR doctor (or anything else). It's a moral issue to me. I find it quite irksome whenever you, or ANYONE else, decides to run to the government first, second and third for ANYTHING that happens in life that they can manage to take care of on their own.
As for national defense: considering that is perhaps the primary role of the federal government, it is VERY appropriate that our tax dollars are spent on that.
BTW, no enjoying my "new place". It's a storage shed. Long story. I've dropped considerable hints to the NB community (but perhaps not to you directly) about what is about to happen. You might see my production here drop off quite dramatically in the coming days and weeks...

Um...
January 1, 2008 - 03:38 ET by UnsaneCanadian health care can't be all that.
The Quebec High Court recently condemned it, after all.
And if I had a link, I'd show you what a Calgary newspaper says about it. It isn't flattering.

Pretty good hit piece on
January 1, 2008 - 05:39 ET by Gary P JacksonPretty good hit piece on the Governor. Did you pay attention? Romney was attentive, and showed empathy. Everyone could grasp that he cared for the kid. He spend a long time with him.
But, unlike the dims, Romney has a core value, and he stuck to it. (Reminds me both of Reagan and Bush 43) Real quickly he realized he was being set up for failure. The kid started asking Mitt if he was gonna arrest him. The camera man, or someone started getting loud and asking the same questions, telling the crowd Mitt wouldn't talk to a kid in a wheelchair, and answer his questions.
That was a no win situation. Whatever Mitt did was gonna be wrong, and when the other guy got loud, it was time to move on. At that point, Romney could have been handing out $100 bills, and he wouldn't have made those guys happy.
MS is tough. I have one 40ish cousin who was diagnosed in her teens. She can only get around in her chair. She smokes some reefer to ease the pain when nothing else will Her aunt, my first cousin was just diagnosed. I feel for the kid in the wheel chair, but he ambushed Mitt. Mitt did the right thing. He stood on principal, and walked away.
And if you think Mitt is a heartless SOB, remember his wife also suffers MS. MS is one horrible way to be. In my case, the euthanasia you are talking about would come in real handy!
AS for his hunting credentials, that is so far down the list of things to care about. I don't hunt, never have. Don't care for fishing either. Too boring for me!
The abortion thing is something important to me, but not a deal breaker. The only thing a President can do is appoint judges. And the next President will have a lot of placing to do. SCOTUS will see several Associate Justices retire during the next administration. If he does what he says he will do, he will be appointing those who have the ability to change the law. Mitt and Rudy both have pledged to appoint strict constructionists to the bench.
Hadn't heard the gays in the military charge. I know the don't ask, don't tell policy is a Bill Clinton deal. Although, it makes the most sense. The United States Armed Forces are tasked with lot of responsibility. Most of the guys serving are young, and having openly gay men or women would disrupt the cohesion of the forces. Having one in the bunk house would cause a stir. It would also be very uncomfortable for the gays. If you don't think their fellow members will give them hell, no need to wake up.
The US Armed Services are not a social experiment. They have one mission, protect America. The way I look at it, if someone is gay, so be it. But it's personal. If a gay wants to serve, and is able, by all means, sign 'em up. But they need to keep the gay part to themselves.
Gary
January 1, 2008 - 14:32 ET by shawn228Yes Gary I did pay attention and from my perspective Mitt blew him off and he could have done a much better job of explaining his postion but he knew the cameras were on and was cowardly.
My concern is not his hunting credentials, my concern is that he lied about them. He also said he saw his dad march with MLK, but then he said he heard about it, which one was it?
Sorry Gary, I have an open mind, but It will take lots of convincing for me to even consider voting for this used car salesman.
