I don't want to sound heartless towards the many victims of the California wildfires, but this L.A. Times piece is just a sob story shilling for illegal alien sympathy!
Flames were only one worry for some illegal immigrants in the fire zone. Equally scary were the crowded roads and evacuation centers, heavy with law enforcement officers, including U.S. Border Patrol agents.
Some wondered if they would be deported if they went to shelters.
It gets even better. The ACLU is really trying to pull at the liberal heart-strings with ridiculous statements like this one:
Immigrant rights groups and the American Civil Liberties Union, however, claim that authorities have created a climate of intimidation through neglect and such policies as asking for identification at some shelters.
You have got to be kidding me! They might as well have said that authorities are creating a “climate of fear” by upholding the law! Oh wait! Practically, that is what they said.
The article goes on to describe how other "immigrants" were petrified after hearing rumors of some thieves being arrested and deported after being caught stealing! Of course the ACLU claim that this was racial profiling.
The article is one of the most transparent sympathy pieces I've seen in quite a while.

Playing with fire
October 29, 2007 - 23:59 ET by acumenNor do I wish to sound unsympathetic but since the fires first began I've been wondering what extent the refuge left behind in this rugged terrain by illegal immigrants played in fueling the fires. From pictures I have seen prior to the fires the underbrush seems almost incidental compared to the piles of trash littering the landscape.
I can almost hear the ACLU whining echoed by their LA Times demedia accomplices now if the suggestion was made that a suitable punishment for illegals caught in this country would be having to spend a minimum of two weeks picking up their trash they have left behind before being deported. I wonder if at least the environmotionalists would get on board with that eco-friendly plan? Somehow I think they would remain as silent on that topic as the feminists were about Bill Clinton's escapades.

October 30, 2007 - 00:01 ET by Sonny LykosI think all of those illegal immigrants who have lost work and their jobs due to the fire should receive unemployment benefits.
So....how long before some lefty wacko suggests the above?

And knowing how insane California law is, they will probably get it! Man I hate the country of California.

So when they find a person who appears they might be illegal and also is dead, such as the ones who burned to death, no attempt should be made to determine their identities but just put them in unmarked graves?
When a possible illegal is arrested for a crime make no attempt at identification? Just lock them up with no notification of relatives?

October 30, 2007 - 00:55 ET by jdhawkIt obvious by the utter failure of ICE that they too feel the same way as the ACLU and LAT.
When have you heard, read, or viewed ICE being taken to the wood shed for their inability to control illegal aliens entering this country or apprehending and deporting them once they are here. Instead ICE gets a free ride.
The illegal aliens issue ought to be treated like the civil rights issue back in the day. ICE should be augmented by the National Guard and raid any and all places of employement and the apprehended illegal aliens should be immediately deported.
By the way, how is that border fence going? See what I mean.

Identification
October 30, 2007 - 01:38 ET by ChaitealoverWouldn't those running the shelters require identification from everybody requesting assistance? How else would they know if the person came from an evacuated area? I live in SD county, but my home was not in danger. I wouldn't try to get into a shelter unless it was, but there are people who would.

well if we can't get the law to oust them maybe fire will work
October 30, 2007 - 01:49 ET by lunaticcringeradiomaybe we can get the laws of nature to do the job the police should be doing(not blaming the police directly i know it's the politicians that are holding them back). i think controlled burns against illegals would work better than a wall. maybe a 700 mile moat filled with kerosene? and that would still burn less fuel than al gore jet jumping around the world.
oooooh how about a wall topped with a moat filled with kerosene.
and little tunnels under it that trained prairie dogs with lil grenades strapped to their backs, solve 2 problems at once.
and giant lasers mounted on turrets to zap anyone that might get past all that.
nah how about just enforcing the laws that exist.

My views have changed
October 30, 2007 - 06:15 ET by TexasOptimistMy views have changed concerning immigration. As I posted on an earlier topic...
Being undocumented is not a CRIME in itself. At most, it is a tort offense, off limits in criminal courts. My views on this issue have changes over the past several months. I used to be an "enforce-and-deport" supporter. But as I have seen how such efforts are so economically damaging to the country, my position has shifted. And Noel... by automatically assuming that supporters of immigrants' rights are leftists, it is YOU that is showing stereotyping. After all, people like Jeff Jacoby and Linda Chavez are FAR from being leftists, don't you think?
How is this nonsense? He is precisely, completely, totally, 100% correct.
George W. Bush is not a full-fledged conservative, but I still support his presidency. (Although I am rethinking this position daily!) Still, I'd rather have him as president than ANY of the Democrats. Merry Christmas 2007.

If they go back home, I don't see any "lifetime" status applied.
We need to quit with the impossible and address the possible.
I don't see rounding them up serves any purpose. But there can be no doubt the Liberals are intent on shaping the political landscape by all means available.
Maybe we do need Illegal labor right now (I doubt it), but I don't see anything wrong with sealing up the border and follow it up with our own decision as to how many to keep.
This is no more harsh than the scenario going on in blue collar manufacturing plants across America for the last 25 years. As jobs were eased South to Mexico, Americans were hired with the understanding their jobs were temporary. Some of these "temporary" jobs lasted for 20 years but the understanding was never abolished.
So, let's seal the borders up and decide how many of these temporaries we need.
We need NONE of the
October 30, 2007 - 16:03 ET by BeowulfWe need NONE of the "temporaries". There are plenty of people patiently waiting in line to IMMIGRATE to the US, following the rules. Expedite them. Throw out the illegals as they are caught. If caught again, jail time followed by deportation. Third time, serious jail time then deportation. Each time they are caught, more severe punishment. Eventually, even the densest will get the hint. They won't be sending much money back to their home countries from jail. And to offer them precedence over LEGAL immigrants is insulting to those following the rules.

Well, I certainly hope so! I hope they got the message: if you get caught stealing, we will find out you are here illegally, and you will be deported!
You got a problem with that?

October 30, 2007 - 07:20 ET by Cool ArrowI'm shocked!
We certainly don't allow our Border patrol agents here in Texas to engage in such activity.
We'll throw their a$$ in jail if they try anything like that.

October 30, 2007 - 14:15 ET by greenfairieAs a SoCal resident I can tell you there's nobody looking to bust illegal immigrants for showing up at shelters, etc.. The only ones who got arrested were losers who were taking donations and trying to fence them elsewhere.
And even if they're worried about those oh-so-mean authorities, maybe they ought to head home.
