Colorado State College Newspaper Editor Regrets Consequences of Bias Against Bush

  • Bookmark and Share

After seeing the consequences of advertisers disappearing, the editor of the Rocky Mountain Collegian editorial board is regretting the consequences of printing the extremist headline of F*** Bush!

Here is the news:

As local and national media will inevitably jump on this controversy, I strongly urge the university community to try and understand that the intentions of the students on staff, including me, were not to cause harm, but rather to reinforce the importance of free speech at our great institution. My staff and I are extremely proud to be CSU students and members of this amazing community, and it is my sincere hope that our readers understand our intentions were not malicious. The First Amendment is at the very core of what we do as a newspaper. We as journalists wish to celebrate it, utilize it and, sometimes, defend it. The Collegian editorial board, a group of seven student editors charged with determining a staff editorial for each issue, voted to run the editorial statement. This vote was a split vote, but the board as a whole as agreed to stand behind this decision and to continue the Collegian tradition.

Along with free speech always follows the consequences, responsibilities and the reactions. It seems the regrets come after advertisers pull out. How about that? Here is the video

Free vs Responsible

Don't these "students" learn about free speech and responsiblities before they try to practice it? What's being left out here? I think all they focus on is the word "Free", and leave everything else out. How are these people ever going to function in society?

This apology is bunk, BTW. The newspaper should be shut down for a period of time (as punishment against for the poor standards used to decide what to publish); every single one of the students involved should be fired; and the so-called faculty advisors need to be replaced with people who know what they are doing.
