Sen. Rand Paul Prevails in Economic Debate With David Letterman
I think he’s wrong about some of these things, I just can’t tell you why. – David Letterman
This is two days in a row where a glib, lefty comedian has taken off his clown nose, engaged in a serious debate with someone from our side they disagree with politically and found themselves caught off guard by a prepared presentation of facts and logic. Wednesday it was Jon Stewart being schooled by Donald Rumsfeld on the Iraq War and last night a calm, cool, and educated Senator Rand Paul gave David Letterman a terrific lesson on the basics of economics…
Like Jon Stewart, you have to give Letterman credit for his willingness to seriously engage on this issue. You just have to wonder how long that will last if our side keeps presenting our ideas so well. Will the clown nose and cheap shots return soon?
What is great, though, is that thanks to Secretary Rumsfeld and Senator Paul’s willingness to enter the hostile territory of popular culture, a whole new audience has been exposed to a range of ideas unheard of on these shows before. Instead of our worldview simply being ridiculed or marginalized as punchlines, it’s being presented in reasonable and even attractive ways.
If Letterman and Stewart want to expand their audience; having more of our political stars on, engaging them on the issues, but doing so with this kind of respect would be an excellent way to go about it.

Here are the numbers, David.

You can tell Letterman's a liberal; when faced with the fact that increased spending on public schools hasn't led to better performance, his solution is to spend more, and see if THAT works.
I notice Letterman isn't claiming that he pays extra on his taxes because he thinks he should pay more. But then again, he probably doesn't consider himself one of the "wealthy."

debate with Letterman is like saying a Ph.D in quantum mechanics prevailed in a debate about string theory with a kindergartner...Letterman is a fool and was completely out of his depth in this "debate," a fact that even he must know on some level. Why Paul (or any other Repub) wastes his time going on Letterman's show, I'll never understand.

LOL, Sky...I was just coming back to say pretty much the same thing; but with a much less intellectual example.
A better headline would have been "Paul takes Letterman to School."
I would say "Game, set, match to Paul" but this was NOT a debate.
Paul presented facts, with numbers to support; Letterman presented his opinion. And admitted that he didn't even know why he had that opinion.
mb...As far as liberals are concerned...

their opinions are the facts, and no amount of reason, logic, or proving them wrong makes any difference. Letterman's admission that he didn't even know why he has the opinion he has, was as you said, game, set, and match to Paul, and perfectly illustrated just what an ignorant, asinine buffoon Letterman is.

Well, Lettermen gets paid a LOT of money - although I can't for the life of me figure out why - so that is all he needs to know about 'economics'. Tell me something that this dope knows anything about, besides being snide and arrogant and angry??
Gee, you're going to have to give me a minute...

That is a toughy...But being snide, arrogant and angry is all that Letterman knows about.

I give neither Stewart nor Letterman credit for ''engaging'' in a serious topic with Conservatives. They bring them on SPECIFICALLY to ensnare or ambush them with bogus questions like ''when did you stop beating your wife'' or ''do you seriously believe in what the Birthers believe?''.

Though he was well-spoken, I believe he missed a golden opportunity in this interview. His theme was which entitiy could do things better - government or private sector. While it's a good point, it's not what is most important. He had great opportunity to speak about the limited powers that the federal government has, as granted to it by the Constitution, and that anything else is an overreach and is unConstitutional. And he can do it as well, if not better, than most because he believes in it. Had he spoken to that, he would have been speaking with the direct foundational backing of that Constitution, without viewpoint being a part of it. That educates people best and it would have been a much better approach to the discussion.
Though I think he did a decent interview with his points, he really missed an opportunity to shine a bright light on the Constitution and what truly matters and maybe get a few more Americans to think about it more.
