How Embarrassing!
Picture this...
You report to the international news agencies that 11 of your family members in Iraq have been slaughtered!
You hold several press conferences and gain great sympathy.

(AFP)
You become an overnight sensation with the antiwar media.
You've never had so much sympathy and attention in all your life.
You even get a state funeral in Jordan where you make a living as a Baathist anti-Iraq War journalist.

(Awad Awad, Deseret)
You get photos taken of you and your official government guest sobbing in grief.
You hold more press conferences for the dozens of media personnel wanting to hear more about the horrible slaughter of your family members back in Baghdad.
Your supposedly dead family members back in Baghdad show up and wave and smile for the cameras!
(Much thanks to my friend Iraqi-American Haider Ajina for forwarding the article with the family picture from the Iraqi Barutha News.)
The sad thing is... The original story made headlines around the world, but this photo correction will not even make the back page.
UPDATE: Aswat Aliraq reports: Arrest Warrant For Diaa al-Kawwaz!!
Iraqi-American Haider Ajina informs me that according to Barutha News the Iraqi Government (Interior Ministry) has requested and recieved an arrest warrant for Dia al-Kawwaz (Dhia Alkoozi).
Haider adds: "What a change. What a change. All thanks to our men and women serving in Iraq and the Iraqis who are getting a taste of human dignity and human rights and the rule of law...."

LA Times on the lying Kawwaz
November 30, 2007 - 12:58 ET by Gary HallThe LA Times, in today's edition, put up a touchy piece on the lying journalist, Dia al-Kawwaz (LA Times spells it Kawaz). All in all it's a relatively fair shot by the LA Times, as it gets the facts straight. However, seems the story spends too much time on promoting sympathy for the plight of journalists in Iraq, and ends on this odd note:
I suppose had Kawwaz suggested that President Bush might have the bodies stashed in the basement at the White House, the LA Times would have printed that as well.
What's missing in the story is a connection to the very current story of Bilal Hussein, the Iraqi journalist who is accused of faking photographs, etc., and was taken into US military custody for having links to terrorist groups operating inside Iraq. The LA Times covered that story on Nov. 20th, but that story completely skipped the journalistic ethical questions, instead focusing on the criminal law aspects of Hussein's arrest, confinement and due process.
In both stories, what is missing is the sense of outrage by journalists themselves that some in the media are so severely violating the trust of the public. Perhaps, what is most evident here is that, as history as shown, there exists a "blue wall of silence" within the media much like Frank Serpico experienced in the NYPD.

November 30, 2007 - 15:46 ET by MassConservativeKawaz said he remained unconvinced that all of his relatives were fine despite the television appearance of two of his sisters and his mother's statement confirming the family's well-being. He suggested the family might have been coerced into denying an attack occurred.
Journalism at it's finest...did the Times not even think about the credibility of this statement. How can you say one day they were slaughtered dead and the next day say you are unconvinced they are fine when they are standing in front of a camera waving? If they were slaughtered as he suggested how exactly to you coerce a dead body to deny an attack?

Crock (of) tears
November 30, 2007 - 13:07 ET by acumenWhat to do? Does Dia al-Kawwaz (Dhia Alkoozi) actually mourn for real now or rejoice at this latest "development"? No question Code Pinko's are wailing even louder.
Regardless, exposing this recent media scam certainly explains why Iraq war correspondents are still deeply pessimistic about conditions in Iraq. The truth hurts.
