Doonesbury Ultrasound 'Rape' Cartoon Series Stirs Controversy; Newspapers Spike
The last time newspapers spiked leftist Garry Trudeau’s political cartoon series Doonesbury was in 1985 when he parodied the pro-life film documentary, The Silent Scream, which showed an actual abortion. Now that one must have been a hoot.
But Trudeau maintains passing up the transvaginal ultrasound = rape meme “would have been comedy malpractice,” as quoted by UPI. Again, more abortion humor.
The story, from Gawker:
Political comic strip Doonesbury will debut an abortion storyline next week, with a particular focus on the Texas law requiring pregnant women to receive a transvaginal ultrasound and then wait 24 hours before having an abortion.
Some papers will opt not to run the strip due to its explicit and controversial content. The storyline involves a woman going in for an abortion and being sent to the “shaming room” where she’s asked, “Do your parents know you’re a slut?”
I wrote last week that feminists have dug themselves into a hole, because the abortion procedure itself comes a lot closer to rape than a benign transvaginal ultrasound, which Planned Parenthoods do anyway.
Trudeau makes my point. At right is a frame from his series, indicating transvaginal ultrasounds hurt, which they do not, but nevertheless, how can one look at that graphic and not think how much worse the upcoming abortion will hurt?
The storyline for that day’s cartoon, from JimRomenesko.com:
Thursday: In the stirrups, she is telling a nurse that she doesn’t want a transvaginal exam. Doctor says “Sorry miss, you’re first trimester. The male Republicans who run Texas require that all abortion seekers be examined with a 10″ shaming wand.” She asks “Will it hurt?” Nurse says, “Well, it’s not comfortable, honey. But Texas feels you should have thought of that.” Doctor says, “By the authority invested in me by the GOP base, I thee rape.”
Furthermore, as one pro-abortion commentator wrote in Slate:
Since most abortions take place in the first trimester of pregnancy, many of these ultrasounds are performed with a transvaginal probe…..
But now that women have heard abortion supporters describe this form of ultrasound as “rape,” will more of them be terrified when they arrive at a clinic and are informed they will have such a procedure? Or might they be scared off altogether? Will abortion clinic staff who perform the ultrasound be seen as “rapists,” as the provider I mentioned earlier worried?
Trudeau clearly feeds the fear.
Other strips from the week do not bode well for the abortion industry to persons who take time to ponder them. For instance, the subliminal message here is that contraceptives fail:
Tuesday: He asks her if this is her first visit to the center, she replies no, that she’s been using the contraceptive services for some time. He says, “I see. Do your parents know you’re a slut?”
And here that the blob tissues is actually a baby:
Friday: Doctor is explaining that the Texas GOP requires her to have an intimate encounter with her fetus. He begins describing it to her. Last panel, he says, “Shall I describe it’s hopes and dreams?” She replies, “If it wants to be the next Rick Perry, I’ve made up my mind.”
And here that there is a profit motives behind abortion services:
Saturday: Back in the reception area, she asks where she goes now for the actual abortion. Receptionist tells her there’s a 24-hour waiting period: “The Republican Party is hoping you get caught in a shame spiral and change your mind.” Last panel: She says, “A final indignity.” Receptionist replies, “Not quite. Here’s your bill.”
Far be it from me to recommend abortion strategy, but I’m not thinking this overall narrative is smart.

abortion. Many women need the transvaginal ultrasound in cases where they think there might be something wrong with the baby, even when it is a "chosen baby." If there were any feminists that really cared about women, than they would be angry about this too.

I think the point is that the ultrasound is being made mandatory, that the patient doesn't have a choice but to have this done.
Its always been mandatory, for the most part

most PP locations require an ultrasound before abortion so its always been mandatory. IIRC its required in 98% or so of the procedures/murders.
iirc the new law only says ultrasound and does not require transvaginal ultrasound as many keep trying to say. I easily could be wrong on that though.

While this type of ultrasound is invasive, the very abortion procedure is invasive, and the woman must sign permission to perform both.

More things patients don't have a choice but must have done in an invasive manner - Vaccinations. Pulmonary artery chatheters. Urinary catheters. Spinal taps. External ventricular drains. Wait, this could go on all day.
What is an invasive procedure?
An invasive procedure is medical procedure in which the body is "invaded" or entered by a needle, tube, device or scope. Invasive procedures can include anything from the simple needle prick for a blood test or shot, to inserting a tube, device or scope, to major surgeries.
Yeah, because patients just look so forward to any other invasive procedure. Yay, I get a tube stuck up my wee wee today and it has to stay in there for the next week. Yay, I do it all the time at home, it is so much fun! Yay!
Stick to talking about cop killers, loser. It is the only thing you do well.

He is trying to teach women that this instrument is trying to take something away from them or harm them in some way. That is not OK. I expect some young mother with a troubled pregnancy will become all stressed out when the doctor whips out the "shame stick" to check on the health of her baby.
TVUs are standard monitoring in gynecological procedures.

TVU is performed for most high-risk pregnancies on a routine basis so any problems are detected early. TVU is also used in non-pregnancy cases for accurate imaging to guide a gynecologist performing a surgical procedure. Trudeau is just another liberal nitwit who conveniently forgets to do any research on the way TVU is used in medicine.
Glad to see that some papers spiked it. Now Trudeau can have a taste of what conservative columnists and writers face every day when some chronically outraged & habitually offended (COHO) editor decides to spike their opinions. What goes around comes around Gary. Suppose you will spend the next couple of months whining about "censorship" in your diatribe.

Can we expect Trudeau to produce a comic on Obama's support of the summary executions of infants who survive abortions (or what Trudeau predictably calls "pregnancy terminations"!)?

"No more back alley abortions?"
Every time a measure is put into place that will make abortion more like a medical procedure, rather than the baby killing it is, the abortionists scream that it is infringing on their "rights."
Maybe a law should be passed that abortions must be performed on a dirty street, in a back alley, with a coat hanger. Would that be what they want?

Wow, really? I didn't realize Trudeau was still going for comedy, since he hasn't actually been funny since he went on his hiatus in 1983.
It's interesting how a guy can survive for almost thirty years on just the reputation he garnered in the ten years before that....

It's astounding to think that newspapers are imposing their views upon women who may need Doonesbury as part of their moral health associated with their contraceptive practices. Who are these white male publishers to impose their views, moralizing, sermonizing that the perspective Doonesbury provides is improper? They should be forced by law (and using force if necessary) to publish that which offends them and furthermore, to pay Doonesbury for this content that their women readers may elect.
Someone kindly needs to notify DHHS Secretary Sibelius and AG Holder that liberal newspaper publishers are violating women's reproductive rights.

Lola Granola reminded me of a medical colleague who obsessed over everything being political in some way, shape or form. She thought the term "medical history" was sexist. She also thought the term "Hippocratic Oath" should be abolished because it was "paternalistic and patriarchal".
Bill the Cat reminded of Ted Kennedy--no redeeming qualities and loathsome.
Opus was definitely my former neurology residency director. He was about 5 feet 3 inches tall and wore bowties and a vest every single day--whether it was 30 degrees or 120 degrees. He also had a prominent "Roman" nose and spoke in a very high-pitched voice with a deep West Texas accent. We called him "Billy Bob the Brain Buster".

then you would understand that in most cases ultrasounds are performed as to see if there is a live birth before doing any procedure. The reason this is so that the doctor can deduce if it is a medically necessity to perform an abortion in the first place.
Though I never followed my health administration degree as much as I should and chose to go into the scholastic environment, I still had to intern at Shock Trauma in Baltimore to get my degree. You learn a lot about things like this especially considering at the time Baltimore was the highest percentage of teenage pregnancies in the country.
Yes, we can debate government's involvement in the ultrasound practice but it is already done for medical liability concerns alone.
