MSNBC’s Martin Bashir Distorts Public’s View of Mitt Romney’s Mormonism
It appears as though MSNBC's Martin Bashir is bent on painting Republicans as anti-Mormom bigots who are terrified of their own presumptive presidential nominee's faith. In a completely ridiculous and extreme statement on his program Tuesday, Bashir claimed that, “he [Mitt Romney] won't talk about his Mormonism because many Republicans see that religion as a cult.”
While there certainly are some folks who happen to be Republicans who believe this, Bashir wants his gullible audience to believe this sentiment is widespread among the GOP. Apparently Bashir doesn’t know that anti-Mormonism is more common among Democrats not Republicans.
According to a Gallup poll released on June 21, 24 percent of Democrats would not vote for a well-qualified Mormon who was nominated by their party versus 18 percent of Republicans expressing such opposition.
Bashir’s attempts to paint Republicans as evangelical bigots is patently false as prominent Southern Baptist leader Richard Land expressed, “most evangelicals already know what Mormonism believes and most of them are prepared to vote for Mitt Romney in a general election against Barack Obama in spite of his Mormonism.”
If Martin wants to talk about the fears people have towards Mormons he should talk to the nearly 1 in 4 Democrats who wouldn’t vote for one instead of denouncing the religious bigotry that doesn’t exist among rank-and-file Republicans.

Republicans think Mormonism

Republicans think Mormonism is a cult? Well considering that many Dems think ANY religion is a cult, that's kind of projecting.
This is pretty close to what

This is pretty close to what I was thinking when I read the post. In general you would find far more negative viewpoints about Christianity as whole, so of course there would be more animosity toward Mormons there.
What's his Religion

Why doesn't he go to India where he belongs and wallow in their dirt and caste system? He's worse than a mormon.
Again, the ignorance about Mormons shows...

Did you know that "Mormons", (a.k.a. "Latter-day Saints") believe that the Constitution of The United States is a divinely inspired document? That all males in their church are to required to sign up for the draft and even encouraged to serve in our armed forces? Yes, it's true.
You talk as if "Mormons" are one of the lowest forms of life on earth, yet they take the Bible very literally. They are VERY patriotic. And they believe this land, the United States, is choice above all others. Your's and some other persons problems on this site may rise from the fact that the LDS church doesn't believe quite like you do. Mormons, for what they believe, are truely honest and God-fearing people. They believe in Jesus Christ just like any other Christian church, albeit a bit differently. After all, the official name of their church is "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints." Notice the name "Jesus Christ" in their official title.
P.S. No, I'm not a "Mormon" nor do I choose to be one. I just know quite a bit about their faith. We all need to research just what "Mormonism" is and what it isn't. It's called being "fair." A liberal (no pun intended) application of fairness might suit you and others well. ;-)
Mitt Romney for President -- from a non-"Mormon."

The Democrat Party is a cult itself

Using Bashir's rationale, one can make a case that the entire Democrat (intentional sic to piss of the liberals) Party is a cult worthy of Koolaid-level mentality and activity.

3 lies told by Bashir
Submitted by dougtheavenger on Thu, 06/28/2012 - 8:14am.
3 lies MSNBC has told about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints so far.
1. The founder of the Mormon church, Joseph Smith, was caught in flagranto with a 16 year old maid, named Fanny Alger, by his wife, Emma.
This is total fiction. Emma refuted this and all similar allegations in a sworn statement now in the possession of the 2nd largest LDS denomination; formerly known as the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Furthermore, there are no allegations about Smith and Fanny that predate her pregnancy. When the girl became pregnant with no known husband, rumors circulated ultimately resulting in the ludicrous allegation that Alger was one of Joseph Smith’s plural wives. Early in this century, DNA testing by Ugo Perego revealed Joseph Smith was not the father of Fanny Alger’s first child, Orrison Smith. To date DNA research has failed to find a single descendant of Joseph Smith through any woman other than Emma Hale Smith. Five alleged offspring of Smith through alleged plural wives were found not to be Smith’s offspring, but rather the sons of their mother’s lawful husbands.
2. Mormons do not believe in the trinity.
The truly bizarre thing about this lie is why MSNBC briefly morphed into the 700 Club. In any case Mormons believe in a trinity of three divine persons; God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Ghost who are one in purpose. Catholics, Episcopalians, Presberterians, Baptists, Methodists, Lutherans and others believe in a trinity of three divine persons; God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Ghost who are one in substance. The difference in doctrine is homoeusis or consubstantiation. Feel free to make a political issue of consubstantiation.
3. Mormons deny the divinity of Christ.
Again, the truly bizarre thing about this lie is why MSNBC briefly morphed into the 700 Club. In any case Mormons believe Jesus is God the Son; a divine person and member of the trinity or Godhead. Mormons, like Catholics, Episcopalians, Presberterians, Baptists, Methodists, Lutherans and others believe that Jesus is co-eternal and co-equal with God the Father and also that Jesus was “begotten by the Father before all worlds”. (Nicene and Athanasian creeds) At no time have Mormons ever taught that God the Father or Jesus Christ ever required redemption as we require redemption through Jesus Christ or that either Jesus or God the Father were ever in a mortal, fallen state as all mankind is now.
