MSNBC's Finney Won’t Let Shooting Tragedy Go To Waste, Connects to Voter ID Laws

On Friday’s edition of MSNBC’s NOW with Alex Wagner, former DNC Communications Director Karen Finney (and occasional MSNBC host) used the tragic death of Trayvon Martin to viciously attack Republicans across the country.  The segment started out examining the role of gun laws in our society and quickly turned into an assault on Republicans, following comments made by liberal-host Wagner.

Wagner made the claim that, “We had a map of the 25, 26 states with stand your ground laws. You can actually overlay a map of the red states in this country.”  Such divisive rhetoric fed into the liberal talking point for Karen as she went on a tirade.  [See video below.  MP3 audio here.]

Finney maintained that there was a calculated effort between the NRA and ALEC (American Legislative Exchange Council, a conservative public policy group) to push gun laws starting in Florida, going so far as to say that the, “Same committee happened to work on draft legislation on, oh, voter ID laws."

In Karen’s extreme world view, maintaining voting integrity is somehow comparable to gun laws and in her words, “You can put a graphic on over those states and then many of them line up with a lot of the very dramatic extreme things we've been seeing passed in the states by Republican-controlled governors and legislatures.”

Finney, who cannot speak without smearing Republicans has used the tragedy in Florida to make explosive claims, implied that Republicans are extreme in their gun and voter ID laws, which contribute to horrific events across the country.  Rahm Emanuel was right as liberals like Karen Finney continue to exploit a tragedy for political gains.

Below is the relevant transcript.

NOW with Alex Wagner
03/23/2012
12:18 p.m.

WES MOORE: And the fact that I think if we're going to have an honest conversation about gun control, it can't just be about as you said, you know the exceptions. We’re also going to have to include the amount of illegal guns that are also on the streets which make up a vast majority of gun crime that takes place in our country. And you have efforts by, you know, for example the mayors united against control of illegal gun with Mayor Bloomberg and Mayor Booker, etc, are saying if you look at so many of our cities, these are guns that are not registered, these are guns that are not authorized by anybody. But then people are walking around and using them as deadly weapons. So there has to be a much larger conversation about gun control.

ALEX WAGNER: But, you know we had, I don’t know if we actually, our graphics department finished this.  But we had a map of the 25, 26 states with stand your ground laws. You can actually overlay a map of the red states in this country. And there is so, I mean, this is an incredibly heated very partisan issue.

KAREN FINNEY: It is. Although I’ll tell you, the other thing that you can overlay on that map and this is kind of a new detail that we're learning more about is the group ALEC (American Legislative Exchange Council, a conservative public policy group)  played a huge role working with the NRA in drafting legislation that was then like Wayne LaPierre said, Florida was the starting point. Right.  That was a very calculated strategy to start in Florida, spreading to those other states. Same committee happened to work on draft legislation on oh voter i.d. laws. You know so you can put a graphic on over those states and then many of them line up with a lot of the very dramatic extreme things we've been seeing passed in the states by Republican-controlled governors and legislatures.

WAGNER: And I guess it is a small step forward that Florida Governor Rick Scott has said he may be looking again at the law given how transparently awful and tragic the havoc that it has brought.

"MSNBC is using their stable of "talent" to profit off this tragedy"

You have to get a bit more MICRO in your use of stable. MSNBC draws their talent from the patties found amongst the straw on the floor of each stall.
To keep the ANALogy, each stall represent each of MSNBC's so-called "talent," and each has its own unique stench.

are zero consequences to disarming citizens. Put aside for a moment the issue of an armed populace is less likely to be exploited by the political classes and that whole distasteful 1776 thing, I think liberals would rather see a hundred thousand innocent victims of violent crime rather than a rare idiot (like this guy in Florida) do something out of control.

Maybe it's beginning to dawn on the DNC.

Submitted by Newsbubba on Fri, 03/23/2012 - 3:16pm.

Those "25 or 26 states" are packed full of armed citizens, while only the criminals are armed in the liberal loony states.

So when they're finished lying their asses off to us trying to take our freedom away, and it didn't work, they will have to move on to the next step in the Fascist/commie/liberal playbook.  They will have to start "reeducating" us. (Read "eliminating")

Hey, I don't make this stuff up.  It worked in Germany, Russia, China, Cuber, most of Africa, North Korea, and some South American countries.  That "reeducation" could only happen after the citizens had given up their weapons to the government, and it resulted in 100's of millions of dead, but definitely "reeducated' people.

So when the DNC adds up our weapons with the amount they have, they lose!  Now the push is on full bore to get guns out of our hands, so they can get on with the next step after the RBFSOB is reelected.

Personally, I ain't giving mine up.  Are you?

Gun laws and voter ID laws

Submitted by CO2Maker on Fri, 03/23/2012 - 4:28pm.

Is she implying that people will use guns or weapons to intimidate potential voters? Where did we see that last? Oh yes, Philadelphia in 2008. Paramilitary guys with steel batons, who pleaded guilty to the charge of voter intimidation and the DOJ threw out their plea! About voter ID.
.
A friend and I were at a Waffle House earlier today, sitting in a booth next to the register, where I overheard this conversation: Three young women pay their bills, apparently with credit cards. The WH clerk asks one of them for a photo ID. She says her friends have gotten photos on their cards but she hasn't had time to do the same with hers. The guy says, "I'm supposed to hold on to this card until you can show me an ID." (I can't remember if he said "I'm supposed to hold on to the card" or "the law says I can hold on to the card.") She says she'll have to go out to her car, and does so. They weren't ethnic minorities (although at least two of them were quite obviously members of the bariatric set.)

Maybe they should put this graphic up....

Submitted by krendler on Fri, 03/23/2012 - 8:33pm.

Put up a graphic that overlays a map of the U.S., like weather radar, showing the number of deaths by guns, specifically the murder of black youth at the hands of black youth (dozens EVERY night?). That's apparently not significant enough to justify marches, walkouts, or statements from the president. Instead, the attitude you get from the black community in those very numerous cases is "DON'T SNITCH!!" (i.e., don't cooperate with police to solve the murder).

But in this case, of course, we get a big, sanctimonious outcry from the media talking heads, Al Sharpton, an Barack Obama about the bad, bad police not doing their job or "looking the other way."

The hypocrisy / double standard is staggering.

Obama and the media are deliberately politicizing a tragic death.

What we are watching is a Media Lynching for Zimmerman.

Submitted by acaiguana on Fri, 03/23/2012 - 8:55pm.

I'm not going to defend or attack Zimmerman.  He needs to stand through an investigation and possibly a trail.

But what I can't stand is the Wild West Lynching that we are watching via the MSM.

This is as bad as a mob charging the home of a private citizen (who may be guilty, but presumed not).

Who is this mob?  The mob is the Democrat Party and all of its ilk.  Sharpton, Jackson and good ol' Louis.

Throw in the MSM and ignorant children of the Parents of the Civil Rights movement.

You have a lynch mob.

It is disgusting and un-American.

Witness: Martin attacked Zimmerman
Updated: Friday, 23 Mar 2012, 6:19 PM EDT
Published : Friday, 23 Mar 2012, 5:47 PM EDT

ORLANDO - A witness we haven't heard from before paints a much different picture than we've seen so far of what happened the night 17-year-old Trayvon Martin was shot and killed.

The night of that shooting, police say there was a witness who saw it all.

Our sister station, FOX 35 in Orlando, has spoken to that witness.

What Sanford Police investigators have in the folder, they put together on the killing of Trayvon Martin few know about.

The file now sits in the hands of the state attorney. Now that file is just weeks away from being opened to a grand jury.

It shows more now about why police believed that night that George Zimmerman shouldn't have gone to jail.

Zimmerman called 911 and told dispatchers he was following a teen. The dispatcher told Zimmerman not to.

And from that moment to the shooting, details are few.

But one man's testimony could be key for the police.

"The guy on the bottom who had a red sweater on was yelling to me: 'help, help…and I told him to stop and I was calling 911," he said.

Trayvon Martin was in a hoodie; Zimmerman was in red.

The witness only wanted to be identified as "John," and didn't not want to be shown on camera.

His statements to police were instrumental, because police backed up Zimmerman's claims, saying those screams on the 911 call are those of Zimmerman.

"When I got upstairs and looked down, the guy who was on top beating up the other guy, was the one laying in the grass, and I believe he was dead at that point," John said.

Zimmerman says the shooting was self defense. According to information released on the Sanford city website, Zimmerman said he was going back to his SUV when he was attacked by the teen.

Sanford police say Zimmerman was bloody in his face and head, and the back of his shirt was wet and had grass stains, indicating a struggle took place before the shooting.
