Either MSNBC "Hardball" host Chris Matthews let one slip tonight, or it was an extremely poor choice of words.
Following President Barack Obama's Dec. 1 speech, which he announced his intentions for increasing troop levels in Afghanistan, MSNBC followed with wrap-up coverage of his speech with arguably three of their most prominent on-air personalities - "Countdown" host Keith Olbermann, "The Rachel Maddow Show" host Rachel Maddow and Matthews.
Matthews referred to a scene from "Gone with the Wind" about the American Civil War as an example of "excitement" going into a war. He said that was lacking in the room during Obama's speech.
"I think it's true of most wars," Matthews said. "They start with a lot of excitement. I remember the scene in ‘Gone with the Wind' where the rebels are so excited about going to war with the North, a country they can't beat because of its industrial advantage and population advantage. They are going to lose that war eventually."
However, Matthews also said he saw a lot of skepticism among some of the older audience members at West Point, which he called "the enemy camp" and "a strange venue." (emphasis added)
"It seems like in this case, there isn't a lot of excitement," Matthews said. "I watched the cadets, they were young kids - men and women who were committed to serving their country professionally it must be said, as officers. And, I didn't see much excitement. But among the older people there, I saw, if not resentment, skepticism. I didn't see a lot of warmth in that crowd out there. The president chose to address tonight and I thought it was interesting. He went to maybe the enemy camp tonight to make his case. I mean, that's where Paul Wolfowitz used to write speeches for, back in the old Bush days. That's where he went to rabble rouse the "we're going to democratize the world" campaign back in '02. So, I thought it was a strange venue."

Well,
Tue, 12/01/2009 - 21:43 ET by UpNorththe cadets were falling asleep, or sitting on their hands. The professional military people were also falling asleep. And why should Matthews be shocked that he saw skepticism, this is a CiC that has used the troops for photo-ops, nothing else. He's denigrated their service in Iraq, which I'm sure really endeared him to the soldiers who've served there.
I'm wondering if Biden managed to write some of the speech, after all we do have the reference to 7-11.
Did Matthews ever refer to Major Hasan as "the Enemy?"
Tue, 12/01/2009 - 23:22 ET by GalvanicMatthews is known for coming out with some truly stupid statements, but this takes the cake.
If Obama-worshipper Matthews believes that young American men and women -- sworn to defend the Constitution of the United States and obey the orders of our President -- are the Enemy, he's a genuine ass. These men and women are the creme of their generation, and Matthews sees them as the Enemy.
Of course, being a genuine ass is a prerequisite for employment on MSNBC, so his job is in no jeopardy. But he has unwittingly reaffirmed the anti-military attitude that lies just beneath the surface of the Left's empty gestures of "respect for our people in uniform.".
His show should be renamed "Screw Ball." No, better yet, "The Ass Matthews Show."
I agree with you Galvanic
Wed, 12/02/2009 - 02:50 ET by rockyracoonI agree with you Galvanic that, that was a truly stupid statement by Chrissy Tinkles. Who would've ever thought that a man with a TV show would refer to our Military as the enemy? It stands to reason why Tinkle's show has such low ratings. But I respectfully disagree with you on it "taking the cake," as it were. As long as Tinkles has his own show, he will continue to top himself.

That is how a lot of liberals feel about our military.
Which explains how Navy SEALS end up being court-martialed for using "excessive force" on a real enemy combatanat.

Well, a lot of libs and Democrats, including me, do not feel that way about our military. And Matthews' statement was ludicrous and offensive.
Now, apparently I'm not supposed to bring up inconvenient facts concerning Republicans such as the following similar incident involving the court martial of a Navy SEAL during the previous administration, but I'll just have to live with the consequences. [I posted the link on Bozell's thread, too.]

What's your point? I didn't say "all" I said "a lot of." I was careful not to tar all liberals.
And regarding your citing of a similar incident while Bush was in office: again, what's your point? That it happened under a Republican President? I was talking about "liberals" in general, like Matthews, not President Obama. Was the entire military chain of command conservative/Republican while Bush was CinC?
Either way, it stinks. Having it happen under a Republican president doesn't change that.
The command structure of the military is awash in political correctness, as shown by Brig.Gen. Casey's comment that a loss of diversity would be an added tragedy on top of Maj. Hasan's murderous rampage.
Now, apparently I'm not supposed to bring up inconvenient facts concerning Republicans..[ ]..I'll just have to live with the consequences.
Who the heck ever said you can't bring things up? As far as I know, anyone can bring up anything. As for "living with the consequences" (whatever you think they are), I'm sure you'll survive.
the incident
Wed, 12/02/2009 - 09:33 ET by kdizzydazeyou link to was about a captive that had died at the hands of the Navy Seal while being interrogated at Abu Grhaib. Given the state of affairs at that time in 2005 and the outcry from the MSM and sheeple that follow them, the court martial had to take place. Also, since they killed the friggin' guy, something had to be done regardless.
Comparing that with this latest group of Navy SEAL's who, in the heat of the moment of capturing a POS terrorist, beat him up and you come up with two complettely different scenarios. Any real leader would've done what Bush did in the first case, but only a lib douche administration would've pulled this crap in the second scenario.
You know in listening to Obamabi's speech last night (or at least what little I could get through) I found that all of his speeches consist of three major components:
Component 1: Blame Bush or the past administration for a transgression or error in judgment as the main reason for your speech or decision you are speaking in regards to.
Component 2: Be somewhat concilliatory in a condescending way, as if the past administration did not know what they were doing. But that you do.
Component 3: No matter what the speech, what you (the current CiC) are doing is "unprecedented".
Pretty much sums it up. I also see a great game of bullshit bingo once we start pulling from the myriad of buzz words the prez uses in his historic speeches
kdizzydaze..
Wed, 12/02/2009 - 09:50 ET by JerPlease show me where in the article I linked concerning the Navy SEAL lieutenant who had punched an enemy insurgent in the arm was charged and tried by court martial for the subsequent death of the prisoner while in CIA custody. Maybe I overlooked it.
Thanks.
Jer
it was right in the second
Wed, 12/02/2009 - 12:58 ET by kdizzydazeit was right in the second paragraph. The punching of the arm was merely one part of the overall. That is what I pulled from it. The issue of possible court martial, etc had to do with the eventual murder of the detainee/POW during "questioning" (read - interrogation).
My point was that charging someone with the murder of a detainee/POW is a bit different than charging someone for injuries inflicted on an enemy combatant while that combatant is being captured on the battlefield.
Perhaps I read it wrong. Please advise if so.

Can someone please tell Chris....?
Tue, 12/01/2009 - 21:59 ET by superconGone With The Wind was a movie. Not a documentary. It was absurd for him to compare it with reality. To be honest it looked like he was on medication and rightly so. His big hero the tingle master,Barack Obama was actually talking about success in Afghanistan and Chrissie couldn't take it.
I actually watched that segment myself and It was painful to see all three stooges on one panel. Maddow, Olbermann and Matthews. It looked like a funeral over there as they could not believe that Obama was actually bragging about America's prowess in times of war. I'm not kidding. Matthews look like he was going into shock and Maddow was desperately trying to find something positive out of something that was breaking her heart. It was funny. Matthews crack about the "enemy camp" was so insightful because he was just being honest and you know Obama thinks like he does in private but must pretend he is proud of the military in public. Obama despises the military as all lefties do. Obama had to give a speech in front of a group of young people who will actually change the world for the better with courage, sacrifice and commitment instead of giving a speech in front of all the free loading ACORN bums who think they change the world by by shaking down the rich and giving it to crack heads on the street. Obama could never stand as an equal among those fine men and women and they knew it and so did he.
His speech was a flop.

EPIC FAIL!!
Tue, 12/01/2009 - 22:09 ET by BlondeAll the way around.
Obama looked so scared his eyes were wet and on the verge of crying the whole time. He couldn't believe there was no applause. He looked like he was ready to bolt every time he paused for an applause line that never resulted in applause. He looked like he was ready to break down in tears at any second.
I am SHOCKED that he didn't invoke Douglas MacArthur, or any of the other great American leaders who went through the forge of West Point.
My prediction.....the dithering was well placed. Because he knew this speech and this silly "policy" or whatever that bunch of blather was about is going to cost him a 10 point drop in the polls. He was trying to stem the tide of angry opposition, to shove this nasty health care nonsense and Cap and Tax down our throats.
If anyone has any doubts....compare and contrast anything or any time President Bush visited troops to today's little exercise in photo opportunities.
Even Hillary didn't look enthused. The only people in the audience who looked the least bit engaged were the senior officers who thought there may be a promotion opportunity by clapping.
Pathetic. That's the only word in the lexicon. For this speech. For this strategy. For this person who inhabits the Oval Office and pretends to be a war time Commander in Chief.
I hope he fails, too.

So....I decided to hit Youtube, and what to my wondering eyes did appear....a speech by President Bush. It's not dated, but the references to Bush's last visit, Gen. Petraeus, and COIN doctrine lead me to believe it was shortly before Bush left office.
Compare and contrast. The difference in the reaction to their CIC's words is night and day. Bush's intro was all about his audience, not about himself.
Unfortunately, Obama refuses to learn any lessons at all from his predecessor....and continues to vilify and blame him for anything and everything. I truly hope the audience reaction to his speech shakes him to his core (I thought he looked bloody shakey last night, on the verge of tears at the lack of love).....but he's too vain to get it. I can't wait until his nightmare presidency is over. I felt nothing but sorrow for those poor captive cadets last night, having to sit there politely and listen to someone who so openly loathes everything they stand for. Duty. Honor. Country.
I hope he fails, too.
