'Louisiana Purchase' Landrieu Blames ABC Report of $100 Million Buyoff on 'Very Partisan Republican Bloggers'

What's $100 million of taxpayer money between a few U.S. Senators?

After reports surfaced of $100 million for Louisiana was added to the Senate's health care reform legislation, originally from ABC News, and subsequently commented upon by prominent lefties, like U.S. News and World Report's Bonnie Erbe as my colleague Noel Sheppard pointed out, Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., took the Senate floor on Nov. 21 to announce she would vote in favor to proceed forward with the Senate Democratic leadership's bill.

She also responded to allegations that $100 million earmarked for the Louisiana was added to that legislation to sway her vote. She referred to the likes of ABC News correspondent Jonathan Karl and Erbe as "very partisan Republican bloggers."

"I know that might time is up, but I would like to ask personal privilege for just one more minute to address an issue that has come up unfortunately in the last 24 hours by some very partisan Republican bloggers so I need to respond I think and will do so now," Landrieu said. "One of the provisions in the framework of this bill that I've just decided to move on to debate has to do with fixing a very difficult situation that Louisiana is facing and any other state that might have a catastrophic disaster - let's hope they don't - like we did in 2005."

But Landrieu's assertion that "any other state" would be eligible isn't completely honest, as Washington Post columnist Charles Krauthammer pointed out on Fox News Nov. 20.

"If you look at the sections, it is 2006 in which the Louisiana money, it looks as if it is provision for all states which have had a proclamation of a disaster area in the last seven years, and then the fine print inside eliminates all the others except Louisiana," Krauthammer said.

Still, Landrieu elaborated on how federal aid in wake of Hurricanes Rita and Katrina disrupted the state's economy and this $100 million was deserved.

"In 2005, Louisiana experienced two of the worst natural disasters in recent memory and in an effort to aid the recovery, Congress stepped in with a massive aid package for Louisianans. Thank you, that infused grant dollars in direct assistance. Some of these one-time recovery dollars, in addition to the increased economic activity, were calculated into our state's per capita income. The result Madame Chair has been that Louisiana's per capita income ... was abnormally inflated. You can understand that. There were billions of dollars that came in from insurance, and from road, home and community development block grants. In addition, labor and wage costs went up because there was a constriction in the market which any economist could tell you always happens after a natural disaster."

Based on that logic, a fix was needed according Landrieu to counter this artificial government-created wage inflation. But she claimed that aid was not just $100 million, but an astounding $300 million (emphasis added).

"And as a result, when we did the calculations, under the law, it made us seem as if we were Connecticut and not Louisiana, like we had sometime overnight become rich," Landrieu continued. "That is not the case, Madame President. Our state is still as poor as it was, if not poorer. I am not going to be defensive about asking for help in this situation and it is not a $100 million fix, it is a $300 million fix."

But, she denied that $100 million provision was the reason she had decided to vote in favor of cloture.

"I'm proud to have asked for it," Landrieu said. "I'm proud to have fought for it and I will continue to. That is not the reason I am moving to debate. The reason I am moving to the debate, as expressed - in this statement and in hundreds of statements and speeches I've given over the last year or two on this subject, which should be self-explanatory."

When the justification for changing your vote is how much good the money will do, you're acknowledging that you changed your vote to get the money. The clincher was Landrieu's aggrieved, injured, and indignant response to the ... very suggestion ... that she was making her vote based on the added money.

Would she have gotten the money had she not changed her vote? As if it was ... mere coincidence ... that this money came just as the healthcare vote?
If the money was such a good idea, why did they wait until now to give it to her?

Remember the scene in the movie Airplane! when Leslie Nielsen is assuring the passengers that everything is going fine and there's nothing to worry about, all the while his nose is getting longer and longer, Pinocchio-style? That's what this reminds me of.

Was filling up the Harley the other day and an older gentleman came up to talk with us. He said he fought in WWII and was sickened by what was happening. We fly a couple of American flags on the bike so I guess he felt comfortable making a statement.

He felt the "commies and dishonest" people in congress should have something "happen to them" for the sake of the country. He mentioned 100s of thousands have given their lives for this country and having 100 or so disappear before any more damage to the country could be done would be a small price to pay for freedom.

Quite a shocking statement. I replied this is not the solution but I do see his point and thanked him for his service.

I know all of you posters are angry at Landrieu and have expressed that anger at all of La. Be careful. This is the type of name calling and victimization common to left wingnuts.

All of you in other parts of the country have short memories. La has had 5 major hurricanes in the last 7 yrs. Three of them took off my roof. Lilly, Kartrina, Rita, Ike, and Gustov if you want to bother to look them up. Yes, we live in a harsh envirnonment but we love our land, our home, and we are proud hardworking people. We have never asked for a handout until NO. If you know anything about NO you would know that it is nothing like the rest of the state.

Mary Landrieu has been getting hammered by La citizens since Aug. She had to cancel townhall meetings, the la. tea party had protests planned today at all four of her offices. Severe weather here has delayed that.

Also, yes we have corruption here. Like Dodd, Rangle, Feinstein, Reid, and Pelosi. Every state has its own embarrassment. Mary won her last election due to the guy running against her had a long history of being corrupt. Which one did you want us to elect? We took the one that had power in congress. If Mary and the other dimocrats are afraid of the criminals in ACORN and SEIU, and they are not listening to their constituents, perhaps we should take actions to make them more afraid of their constituents than they are the criminals. Just a thought.

Sure, Loretta the Lightweight managed to take advantage of the gerrymandering to earn 300% of the vote in Santa Ana, but B-1 Bob alienated his loyal Vietnamese base in Garden Grove and Westminster by running his fool's errand towards the failed 1996 Republican Presidential nomination. This enabled Sanchez to get away with cherry-picking sufficient illegal aliens and corpses to put her over the top. Now she's talking about running for Governor next year...and if Feinstein retires mid-term and Gerry Brown is Governor, look for Loretta to be appointed Barbara Boxer's junior. Thanks, Bob.

With all due respects. I also danced with 4 of those storms. I got Katrina's eye and 30 foot tide. And can add Georges, and Ivan to the count. Add my place in Florida add Dennis. As the mayor of Bay St Louis pointed out. New Orleans "musicians" got more aide than his entire city.

Lots of us had it tough. So has Louisiana, while everyone was falling over New Orleans, much of Louisiana has been ignored. Including by the former governor. Blanco.

That doesn't excuse Mary messing over the rest of the country to line up lot's of money for Louisiana. And mess over my health care.

Landrieu should be hammered.

If Louisiana re elects her. It'll be hard to respect Louisiana. That says you condone it.

I have no respect for New Orleans - they reelected school bus Nagin and for that they deserve no respect or help! If they will not clean their own sewer they are on their own. I now see the Army Corps of Engineers has lost a suit.....how much of that was due to the local pols dipping into the trough and pulling money for levees and their repair into other "more pressing" things like stadiums and so forth????

I have no use for liberal thinking - it is just so......passe.

Last mayoral election in New Orleans there were a lot of good candidates. They split the vote. The run off left 2 candidates. School bus Nagin and Mary 300 million dollar Landrieu's brother Mitch.

Between the two, I know people who didn't bother to vote. School Bus Nagin was a lame duck. With the choice between 4 years of Nagin and 8 years of Mary 300 million dollar Landrieu's brother. Lot's of people though 4 years of ---- was better tha 8 years of ----.

If I had still been in NO I probably would have opted for 4 years of ---- rather than 8. And judging from 300 million dollar Landrieu's behavior. That would have been my best option.

During Fair Week the cost of services always rises, no fault of mine. It was not twenty dollars, as the Sheriff said, but Fifty dollars, I'm proud to say. I serviced the boy, its true. He needed the education and our county the money, you see. For our People I would do it again. That Sheriff is a Republican, you know. Your Honor knows me much better than he, so have mercy, these charges have no merit."
