Former President George H.W. Bush: Olbermann, Maddow 'A Couple of Sick Puppies'

Perhaps the 41st president still has it in him - at least when it comes to the left crying foul about the so-called uncivil political discourse on right, but being equally if not worse on the left - particularly on MSNBC, the "Place for Politics."

In an interview on Oct. 16 with CBS Radio, former President George H.W. Bush took a very critical tact with MSNBC hosts Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow, deeming them "a couple of sick puppies." (via MSNBC's Oct. 16 "The Rachel Maddow Show")

"I don't like it," Bush said. "I think the cables have a lot to do with it. I'll take you back to when I was president - we got tons of criticism, but didn't seem day in and day out quite as personal as some of these talk show people."

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

He admitted they were on both ideological sides of the spectrum.

"And it's not just the right," Bush continued. "There are plenty of people on the left. If you want me to name a couple of names, I'll be glad to do that for you."

The CBS Radio reporter asked him and Bush did as he had offered.

"Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow - I mean here are a couple of sick puppies."

Maddow expressed her disbelief, despite dishing out her own share of hyperbole to her guests, calling Americans For Prosperity President Tim Phillips a "parasite" and "bad for the country" just the night before. And the former president nailed it - that people opposed to their point of view are treated horribly.

"And the way they treat my son and treat anybody that's opposed to their point of view is just horrible," Bush continued.

Maddow offered a few moments of her show to her MSNBC colleague, Olbermann, who spoke by phone to respond to the comments by President George H.W. Bush.

"I think that I can speak on your behalf here and say that we're very grateful for the former president's concern about our health," Olbermann said. "It's easy to miss the irony here. What he's complaining about in terms of personalized complaint about other politicians - the current era of it, name-calling - he's the father of it."

Olbermann was out sick for the evening, but took a few moments to attack Bush and the president of the Fox News Channel, Roger Ailes, who also played a role in Bush's 1992 presidential campaign.

"And I don't mean he's the father of George W. Bush, I mean he's the father of the process that took us to the place we are now. He is the man who employed Roger Ailes. He and Roger Ailes are the men who ran the Willie Horton ad against Mike Dukakis. He and Roger Ailes are the people who played the scam on Dan Rather, so it's very ironic to hear George H.W. Bush from this lofty perch, and with real, I thought I heard anger in his voice against you and me, and mispronouncing your name, which adds to his credibility.

You tell 'em, 41!

Way to go, George! "Sick puppies" is right.

"The problem is not that people are taxed too little...the problem is that government spends too much." ~President Ronald Reagan

He is correct.

President Bush is absolutely correct in his use of the term "sick puppies" when describing Maddow and Olbermann. Be he should be cautioned that he will be accused of being a "Misogynist" . Who knows what he will be called in regards to Maddow.

He is correct.

On Oct.16th, @22:18 ET, John J. Dunbar said that President Bush (41) after describing  Maddow and Olbermann, should be cautioned that he will be accused of being a "Misogynist".  Who knows what he will be called in regards to Maddow.

I laughed SO hard I damned near fell out of my chair.  I did not see that one coming, and I whooped so loud my wife came down the hall to check on me.

Thank you, lieutenant John J., you made my day!!

"Played a scam on Dan

"Played a scam on Dan Rather?"

What is he refering to here?  Is it the interveiw where Danny wouldn't stop with the Iran-Contra questions so Bush41 told him off on the air?  Cause that was awesome.

I was curious about that

I was curious about that myself.  It has to be that, or in typical WACKJOB land it could be that Olberman thinks the faked documents that claimed GWB had not served honrably in the Air National Guard that Rather flogged to his own discredit were manufactured by Bush the elder?

I mean, in WACKJOB land anything if possible, right?

Just you wait Henry Higgins, I mean George H.W. Bush.  Let the liberal name-calling begin!!!  "...played the scam on Dan Rather."  WTF!!!

I have not yet invented a better term than f--ka-s to describe Olberf--ka-s.  Rachel, however, is another matter.  She is supposed to be SOOO smart, yet she so often comes to the most naive conclusions.

The last time I witnessed them on the phone they were giggling over John McCain's (certainly false) claim that he used the Pittsburgh Steel Curtain defensive players' names to trick his North Viet Nam captures.  This was only days after Olberf--ka-s had called out "Billo the clown" for daring to decide what the news was when O'Reilly talked about the inadvertant taping of Jesse J. bad-mouthing Obama.  That was the first time I had seen Rachel and it  made me an O'Reilly regular.

Just to be clear

for the sake of olberboy, Willie Horton was first brought up as a campaign issue by algore in the primary campaign that year.

And how exactly is it dirty politics to bring up one's prison furlough program that allowed a rapist/killer (Horton) to leave prison walls for a weekend so he could invade a home and spend several days torturing and raping a couple?

If that's no big deal to olber and maddow then I suggest them renting a cabin together and allow me to bring them a weekend "visitor".  If they want, I'll tell the guy that he'll be called "Willie" for the time he's there.

Gun Control - The theory that a woman found dead in an alley, raped and strangled with her own pantyhose, is somehow morally superior to a woman explaining to police how her attacker got that fatal bullet wound.

What Did Bush 41 Specifically Say?

I am a little curious why he said "It happens on both sides"? Can you specify to whom frm. President Bush-41 was taking to task besides Olberfuher and Maddow?

Throwing Dan the Man under the Bush

I think Keith the Sports Boy was referring to the time when Dan interviewed Vice-President Bush during the 1988 presidential campaign live on the Evening News and kept badgering him about Iran-Contra. Eventually, GHWB said, "I don't think it's fair to judge my whole career by a rehash on Iran. How would you like it if I judged your career by those seven minutes when you walked off the set in New York?"

Notice the complaints always go back to Ailes, Fox and Rush.

You can hear from all the complaints from CNN, MSNBC and the other mainstream media- it's all about money.  It's all about the fact that Fox, Rush and Ailes took their audience away from them.  You can hear that every ever time they talk about Rush's contract and that he has enough money to be a part owner of a football team.  Envy!

It's very funny that Campbell Brown's show at 8:00, prime time, is beat- even a few times- by Fox's Redeye show at 3:00 am!  I surprised that Maddow had another CNN news caster on her show.  By having one on the show, she drops her ratings down by about half!  If she keeps that up for long- no one will be to watch!

BWAHAHAHAHAHA!

"Who am us, anyway?" - Firesign Theatre

The real rancor started in 2000....

Politics was always a game of name-calling and trickery.  The media chose sides decades ago and played a snide game for a long time.

But in 2000, an odious, selfish, thoughtless man did more to destroy political discourse in this country than any man has in recent history.  That man was Al Gore.  Sure his boss Clinton was a womanizing sleazebag - but even HE didn't see much in terms of actual mean-spirited media coverage.  The media adored him and covered his butt just like they did all Demorats.

But Al Gore did something unprecendented in American history in 2000 - he contested the results of a free election.   He lost the inital vote count.  But because the vote was close, he refused to accept defeat, thinking he could phony up enough votes and slip them into the box during the confusion.  So he demanded a recount.

And he lost again.  He demanded another recount, and another still.  And he lost them all.  In each and every one, he got fewer votes than Bush.

But because this scumbag refused to accept his defeat, he contested the results and threw the entire country into chaos.  He held things up for weeks, trying to cheat, sneak or steal enough votes to turn the tide.

And he failed.  Finally, he had to admit his defeat and was thankfully banished from the political stage for good.  But the damage was done.

The Democrat press, furious that their boy had lost/failed/been crushed, carried on his lies.  They wailed, howled and screeched about a 'stolen election' and an 'illegitimate president' for eight years.  And to this day, they're still frothing, gnashing their teeth and stamping their feet about it.  They wake up in the middle of the night screaming 'it was stolen' while horrified sweat streams down their faces.

And that brought us to where we are today.  The Democrats and leftists were so furious over their defeat that they still won't let it go. So they get madder and madder, say more and more outrageous things, and get crazier and crazier with each passing day - thinking perhaps that if they just get mad enough, maybe they'll open some kind of 'anger wormhole' that will allow them to go back in time and change the outcome of the election so that Gore comes out the winner.

They want revenge - they want blood - and they'll never be happy until they see it spilled.  It doesnt' matter that they're completely in the wrong on this.  They want to 'get even', and they'll do any disgusting thing in their mad quest for vengeance.  They'll lie - they'll cheat - they'll steal, they'll even arrange for violence and death, either here or in other countries, with their lies and their hate-mongering.  They didn't care that dozens of muslims died when they ran false stories of Korans being flushed in military prisons.  They WANTED people to die - because in their warped, twisted minds, they think it's justified because Gore lost.

These are angry, dangerous, insane people who are blinded by their hatred.  They're even going so far as to help a communist president in his agenda to destroy this country.  They'd even be happy for a civil war and millions of deaths, because in their insanity, they'd think it was 'just desserts' for their injured pride.

Beware these people - they don't care if they draw the country or the entire world into war because of their madness.  They don't care who they hurt or whether lives are ruined.  Like any lunatic, all that matters is satisfying their anger.

Contesting the vote

Let's not forget the earlier presidential election that came down to fraudulent vote totals delivered in the middle of the night. The result was so narrow that if the late votes were disputed and the state's results overturned, the other candidate would have won.

State? Illinois.

Winning candidate? JFK

Losing candidate? RMN

So what did the evil, manipulative, deceitful Nixon do? He declined to contest the manifestly fraudulent Illinois vote totals because to do so would tear apart the country. Nixon thought of the country, the sleazy bastard, and the Nobel Gore thought of ... himself. What did we get? Four years of "stolen election," and four more years of "reelected for the first time." Thank you, Hockey Stick for Brains.

Slyrr - I hope

others read my sometimes long comments, too.  These Bush-stole-the-2000-election folks would never agree that they are much like the Obama-is-a-Muslim folks.  I heard someone (Barfalo?) say Bush also stole the 2004 election.

Oh yeah..not just Garafalo either...what I knew was really going to anger them even more after Bush won reelection was when he said something like "I've earned this capitol and I'm going to spend it or use it" ...I knew it was instant trouble...told my other half that...it was, they never ever stopped with the rabid hatred doubled-down from that point on.

No matter what..they are never satisfied, hatred sustains them.

Sorry to rain on the parade

Sorry to rain on the parade of accolades, but there is just too much fiction masquerading as fact in this post to let it slide.

But in 2000, an odious, selfish, thoughtless man did more to destroy political discourse in this country than any man has in recent history.  That man was Al Gore.

Not a very flattering description, Slyrr.  Do you know Al Gore personally?  My dad did.  A staunch conservative, he couldn't have disagreed more strongly with Gore's politics, but he would just as strongly disagree with the sheer nastiness of your character smear.

Sure his boss Clinton was a womanizing sleazebag - but even HE didn't see much in terms of actual mean-spirited media coverage.  The media adored him and covered his butt just like they did all Demorats.

Really?  And what media would that be which "adored him and covered his butt"?  If anything, Clinton was notable for his lack of favorable media coverage.  The editor of the New York Times (Howell Raines) detested him as was regularly reflected on the Times editorial pages.  The Washington Post was friendly with Ken Star, and not so friendly to Clinton.  Sally Quinn, the "liberal" Georgetown society maven and media queen confided that the Washington establishment considered the Clintons a couple of "Arkansas hicks".  In point of fact, the politician the media actually "convered for" was Republican Newt Gingrich by never reporting on his adulterous affair--while all over Clinton like a pack of jackals.

And he failed.  Finally, he had to admit his defeat and was thankfully banished from the political stage for good.  But the damage was done.

Let me guess.  You're not really big on history, are you Slyrr?  Unprecedented contested election results?  In American history?  Well, I'm going to assume you were referring to presidential elections.  But you would still be wrong.  Read up on the Tilden/Hayes slugfest in 1876 and then get back to me.

And you are aware that Gore actually won the national vote tally, right?  Furthemore, he didn't "demand" an initial recount in Florida ["a scumbag unable to accept defeat" in your fanciful version], it was mandated by state law.  That recount reduced Bush's already razor-thin margin to a miniscule 300+ votes out of several million cast, and based on that fact as well as reports of voting and ballot irregularities in various counties, Gore not surprisingly, and only then, contested the results.  Nor was the nation "thrown into chaos".  The entire episode was indeed notable for reaffirming the comparative stability of our electoral process.  [The most "chaotic" event was the mob of Republicans which attacked the offices in Palm Beach where votes were being manually counted.]  Your depiction of what happened is, to put it mildly, a ludicrous and laughable distortion of reality.

The rest of your post, with its frenzied musings about "warped minds", "screams in the night", "horrified sweat streaming down faces", "wanting people to die because Gore lost" is simply too irrational for comment, other than to note the following:  Under the circumstances, Bush was generally treated very well in the first couple of years of his administration.  It was the increasing unpopularity of the military intervention in Iraq which soured much of the nation on his presidency.

Jer

Jer Slyrr was just realting

Jer Slyrr was just realting the facts.  Only a selfish odious scoundrel like Gore would have put America through the 2000 election aftermath.  Gore should have shut up shop and bowed out graciously but his true character showed through.  Of course I dont expect you to see it and you most likely don't.

President Bill Cliton is a sleaze and adulter and will most likely be one to the end.  The only reason theSCM even had any bad press is becasue of the overwhelming evidence.

Do you know Al Gore personally? Ah, once again, we can't criticise a democrat. Now, because we don't know them personally.

...Republican Newt Gingrich by never reporting on his adulterous affair--while all over Clinton like a pack of jackals. I missed it. What court case was it that Gringrich committed perjury to cover his adulterous affair?

It was the increasing unpopularity of the military intervention in Iraq which soured much of the nation on his presidency. In case you missed it, we are still there, still intervening, still fighting. What? No one is sour now? You mean the whole sourness thing was a political move by the democrats? Huh? Really? sorry, but when a presidential election is as close as 2000 was, it's within your rights to ask for a recount. and don't forget, Gore might have started it, but the GOP came back with their own requests for Florida recounts. basically it was a huge clusterfxxxk on all sides.

look: Gore is a hypocrite and a self-righteous gasbag...but he's not evil. I'm a little disturbed to hear the level of hatred for him and for Bill Clinton (IMHO a pretty good president) on this board. just like the Bush-haters have to get over the fact that he's gone now and can't be blamed for everything anymore, so do you Gore-haters need to get over the 2000 election fiasco.

while i totally agree with 41 and then some, i think this was a bad move.  all this will do is boost rating for both these scumbags, and give them street cred among their peers.  which is why i have great respect for 43.  i've never seen a person attacked so fisously and turn the other cheek and show so much class as 43.

43

Yeah, as much as he aggravated me a few ocassions, you had to acknowledge that about GW. I don't recall him whining like oBama is doing now once and oBama hasn't even completed one year in office yet!

"I ask, Sir, what is the militia? It is the whole people. To disarm the people is the best and most effectual way to enslave them."
George Mason

GW43 came across as a real person ...

Not a packaged and handled wuss.

Case in point: Standing on a platform during the first campaign, he saw a NYT reporter and said to Cheney "He's a major league asshole," without realizing it was being recorded on an open microphone. And Cheney replied, "Big time." When a reporter asked him about it, he just shrugged and grinned and laughed it off. "Oh, well. Sorry 'bout 'dat."

Who else could do that. Al "Naomi does my colors" Gore? or John "Ooh, ooh, a richer woman" Kerry? (As Kerry would say, "I was a weenie before I was a wuss.")

Hey Jeff - your opening line "Perhaps the 41st president still

has it in him..." caught my attention.  I was just wondering how many other guys make it a practice to jump out of airplanes to celebrate their birthdays?  What was the last one? 80 or 85???  That tells me GHWB "still has it in him" ;-)  If I remember correctly, he was the youngest naval aviator in WWII and served his country with honor throughout a long distinguished career.

Perhaps with age comes the ability to say what's on your mind...and I commend him for so doing.  In fact, as seems to be the usual case, he was much too kind.  As other posters have said, think of all the puppies who have been smeared by this comparison with two of the filthiest-mouthed individuals in today's media ;-)

I can't think of a former president with more CLASS!  George H.W. Bush is a rare breed...a true gentleman!

Class

Clinton, Kerry, Gore and Obama are classless ass-hats.
I voted for Clinton twice and Gore once. I was wrong.
Both Bush's have more class in their pinkies than these 4 losers combined.
Clinton was a lying philandering piece of garbage,
Gore is a nut,
Kerry is a phony lying bag of crap,
And Obama is useless as tits on a bull, Obama has less than zero class.

Congrats Gus

Not many find there way out.

Dear George HW:

The Community Agitator in Chief, actually set up a TURN IN YOUR NEIGHBOR web site, so that "mischaracterizations" of His Royal Trajesties health care plan.

How can you lie or mischaracterize a non-existant plan.

Then the Mom Jeans President who can't throw baseball 60ft six inches, sends Femanuel and Axelknob out to whine about FOX,

What was that supposed to accomplish???

gus - "What was that supposed to accomplish??? " I am delighted

to report it accomplished NOTHING!  In my humble opinion, it was instrumental in hammering just one more nail in the coffin of this administration.  They are so totally inept I am reminded of Keystone Cops when they pull stunts like this.
