NYT’s Brooks: Obama Nobel Prize Award a 'Joke' and 'Travesty'; WaPo’s Marcus: Not 'Necessarily Good News'

Remember just a week ago when New York Times columnist David Brooks slammed the likes Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck? Naturally, that led to the left-wing noise machine, and the media which uses that message for show prep, to suggest there was a split in the conservative movement and therefore attempt to marginalize the conservative message.

However, will they be so eager to echo the sentiment of David Brooks in the wake of President Barack Obama's Nobel Prize announcement? On PBS's Oct. 9 "NewsHour with Jim Lehrer," the Times columnist had some disparaging words for Obama's award - despite a sentiment from some liberals that those who question it were somehow un-American.

"Well, my first reaction is he should have won all the prizes because he has given speeches about peace, but also he's give economic speeches. He wrote a book - that's literature. He has biological elements within his body. He could win that prize. He could have swept the whole prizes," Brooks said tongue-in-cheek before delivering the knock-out blow. "Now - it's sort of a joke."

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Host Jim Lehrer was stunned by Brooks' response. "A joke?" Lehrer replied.

"Yeah, I mean it's a bit of a travesty," Brooks replied. "Iranian people are protesting, risking their livers on the street to actually do something. People in organizations decade after decade risking their lives, who actually need a publicity boost. And, the idea that he would win it with five Norwegian lefties, to me it's something of a joke and I do think it will hurt him. The last thing he needs now is to be treated as the global Messiah. People want him paying attention to local issues. And I personally think it would have been certainly dramatic and maybe the right thing to do to turn it down."

Brooks proposition that it was a joke and that he should turn it down was ironically the same suggestion Fox News host Glenn Beck, who Brooks condemned a week earlier, had on his Oct.9 radio show (which Beck was criticized for on MSNBC's Oct. 9 "Countdown with Keith Olbermann").

"He could say, ‘Listen, I don't deserve it,'" Brooks said. "He already said that. ‘I someday hope to deserve it. But this is not something that I have merited yet. And I am a humble person. I am aware of who I am and what I have achieved so far. And, so far I don't think I earned this.'"

Washington Post columnist Ruth Marcus, who is not a conservative by any stretch of the imagination, also said it was bad for Obama.

"I was stunned and amazed," she said. "And I have to say that I kind of agree with President Obama when he said, ‘To be honest I do not feel that I deserve to be in the company of so many transformational figures.' Neither do I. I don't understand this prize. And I actually, I think it reflects poorly on the Nobel Committee more than it does on President Obama who I presume did not nominate himself two weeks after he became president."

"And I don't think it's necessarily particularly good news for President Obama because it raises all those questions about the celebrity. Remember John McCain's ad - where is the substance, what's he actually done? He was being lampooned on ‘Saturday Night Live' just a few weeks ago for not having done anything. And now he gets this prize, for what? And you know, what is he going to top it with next year. What's next?"

What was the downfall of the King that had no clothes

oh yeah a young conservative kid said, "Sir, why aren't you wearing any clothes?"

Obama is truly the king with no clothes.  glamoured and honored by those around him who are to afraid to say or speak the truth.

Beck, Rush and anyone who speaks out to reveal the truth they are the real ones not afraid of truth.

Here's a fact that's worth the knowing, So treasure and mark it well.  When the mind is through with growing, the the head begins to swell.             Sir Nosmo King

When is comes from the msm

When is comes from the msm its called journalism

When it comes from a conservative its called racism, unamerikan, hatemongering, etc...........................................................

Where........

Where is the Peace?

Does anyone Know

Who nominated Obama between Jan 20th and February 11th? All of his supposed good works toward peace came after Feb 11th. I thought they awarded it for works done previously to the Nomination date.

Was there a change in the rules of requirements for the Nobel prize? if so when were they done?

The committee admitted that

The committee admitted that he was given the prize because the world was because he hascaptured the world's attention and given it's people hope for a better future.

And I thought it was just a campaign slogan; who knew there was a Nobel Prize for hope??

The committee also admitted that sometimes the prize is given for aspirations rather than results.

More proof that it's a worthless sham.

mb

You're right that the peace prize is a worthless sham.

This event is also proof that someone doesn't actually have to accomplish anything to be considered an outstanding liberal.

Grammy Award

The Nobel Peace Prize has the same stature as a grammy award.

Good thing I took the time

Good thing I took the time to reread your comment, Jerry.

At first I thought you were disparaging the Granny Awards - a much more worthwhile endeavor.

Nobel committee, kissin' cousins

Well, it's all pretty much an incestuous undertaking, mb.

If only

I'm sure they would of named him King, if only they were able.

Yes, if they

Yes, if they had the power, they would have crowned him 'King of the New World Order'.

"I don't want to be the

"I don't want to be the king, but I don't have any choice, the New World Order is to big to fail" -future quote.

He should have

He should have turned it down, 'humble' speech or not; he is undeserving and the vast majority recognized that the instant they heard the incredulous, absurd news today.

This is rather like peewee soccer awards these days where a kid gets a trophy for just showing up; ironic though that  all of the other nominees were left without their trophy just so the committe could send just one more spiteful message to Bush and to Americans that they aren't quite kicking us in the teeth enough yet.

Another irony is the one LEAST deserving of all of this 'award' (and I do use that term loosely because it truly has lost all of its prestige, merit, meaning, and worth) walks away with the knowledge that most people know he 'won' this 'award' for sheer political spite on the part of the Norwegian committee.   Some 'award'.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee members are a laughing stock in the eyes of the world now (as if giving the prize to Arafat wasn't outrageous enough) and it may be impossible for them to ever regain any respect.  Honestly, for them to say they gave the award 'to enhance...' rather than for accomplishment screams hypocrisy on an international order that even children can recognize.

But once again, the sorry likes of Obama isn't man enough to respectfully decline, he once again just takes without having earned - yes what a wonderful role model he has turned out to be...

This is embarrassing for the United States, for Obama, and most of all for the Nobel Peace 'Prize' Committee.

I wonder if David Brooks

I wonder if David Brooks nominated him for the Nobel Crease Prize.

Brooks is still a joke.

And you think we in Europe agree with this? Read on...

In a highly surprising move yesterday, the Nobel organisation awarded the Peace Prize to United States President Barack Obama, who stated that he was humbled by the award and would gratefully accept it. Commenting in this decision, United States Talk Radio host Rush Limbaugh stated that the Nobel Organisation had just suicide bombed themselves over the award, as the Organisation has awarded prizes to Al Gore, and Jimmy Carter, but no prize was offered to Ronald Reagan, who liberated hundreds of millions of Europeans from the yoke of communism. Others have voiced the opinion that making this sort of award so early in the Obama presidency is a considerable mistake, and others have greeted the announcement of the award to the United States President with shock and incredulity, whilst an online poll in one Spanish newspaper found that 63% disagreed with the award going to a politician, suggesting that the best of the 205 candidates for the award was Ingrid Betancourt.

One political commentator - Pablo Molina of the Juan de Mariana Institute - suggested that since Mr Obama has won the Nobel Peace Prize, the Nobel Committee ought to give the Economics Prize to Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero (Spanish prime minister) for spending the entire assets of a once-prosperous country on absurd measures aimed at ignoring the financial downturn. In China, dissidents are voicing unease about the Prize being handed to Mr Obama, and expressing the view that the award could have been effective in promoting human rights in the country, such as the plight of Hu Jia - another candidate - who has been locked up since 2007 after he exposed government abuses and the plight of AIDS sufferers in China.

Obama owes Bush big time

If, as has been said, the reason Obama was given the Nobel Peace Prize was really to show disapproval for the Bush administration, Obama should call George Bush and thank him for his major role in influencing the selection of Obama over so many candidates who actually deserved the award.

FeynmanFan, good

FeynmanFan, good morning,

I said on another thread that the prize was the hate Bush award. I wonder if Baz even realizes this. Rumor has it that baz is going to donate the money to charity, but until I see the receipient with a big check in hand on fox news I am sceptical of this. Baz is not called the LOTUS for nothing.

Kangaroo, in order for BHO

Kangaroo, in order for BHO to realize that he's being used by the Nobel folks, he'd have to be able to step aside from his narcissism and take an objective look at what's going on.  That's not going to happen.

My guess is that he actually believes he deserves the award and that this is just another indication of how incredibly wonderful he really is.

I can only shake my head in disbelief.

I agree,

I agree,

I heard that next week the

I heard that next week the UN is going to give him a "Lifetime Achievement Award."  LOL

Yes, I'm kidding.  It's pathetic that I should have to specify that, but such is the world.

Kidding, mb?

Based on the Nobel Prize Committee's "logic" for giving Obama the Peace Prize, your lifetime achievement award scenario isn't that far-fetched.

ALL HAIL CAESAR...

The problem is that Obama seems to believe his own BS. He comes across as buying into all of the idolatry being shown to him by the MSM, & the world's leftist elites. This can be very dangerous if it allowed to go on for too long.

 Or.... "You call this a

 Or....

"You call this a pizza?"

No citizen's right to life, liberty, pursuit of happiness, or property is safe as long as Obama is President of the United States.

I also want to see the receipt to charity.......

...but I must insist that since he is going to accept the "award" in person, he pays for it out of pocket.  I, as a taxpayer, do not want to pay for him to pop onto AF1 with his entourage and fly to wherever the hell they hand this thing out.  His "ego" has cost us way too much as it is, and if he wants to buy into this disgusting spectacle, he needs to pay for it himself.

Re charity

Even if he gives it all to a worthwhile charity, he still gets a huge charitable donation deduction which can be used to defer other income and taxes. Don't know if AMT would knock that off and I'm too lazy to figure it out.

Rewarding the man child

This "awarding" of the nobel (yes no caps) prize came as a shock and slap in the face of all the truly deserving people that should have been considered.  This is another example of "he's just not Bush" all tied up in a pretty bow and plain as a wart on the end of it's nose.  The peace prize now means nothing and should be treated as such - a pretty thing that means little and should be dismissed just as easily.

Charles Krauthammer wrote an amazing piece in the Weekly Standard    http://www.weeklystandard.com/Content/Public/Articles/000/000/017/056lfn...   that all obamunists should read (if they could comprehend it) but of course that would be expecting too much.  He thinks the libs are abdicating our preemenance in the world order and I agree with his thinking.  We are heading down the sorry path of economic decline, social degradation and moral absence - in effect the Marxist ideal.  Everybody will be in equal misery - 1984 times infinity.  Big Brother will be the cipher and I for one cannot abide that.  I will fight to my last breath for if we don't do so our children and grandchildren will be the ones to suffer - we will all be dead - effectively euthanized by the ciphers social and medical policies.

I have no use for liberal thinking - it is just so......passe.

Being a laughing-stock

Being a laughing-stock seems to not faze these people at all. The only thing important to them is that they have the power -- to do anything they want. Look at the U.S. Congress. Pelosi is a laughing-stock, and yet she just declared that "Rangle is innocent until proven guilty" and as a tax-cheat gets to retain his position as chairman of the nation's tax-law writing committee. This year's Miss America contest actually used a queer as a judge, and then publically dissed Miss Calif and was cheered. Hollywood supports a child sodomist -- not just rapist, a sodomist. And people still go to movie theaters all across the land.

All of these people have been given power, and they abuse it. And we sit here and do nothing. Pathetic.

Hmmm....

Something tells me the Nobel committee doesn't watch Saturday Night Live.

For Sale

OK, when they gave the award to Al Gore, I began to question if it was for sale.  Now I am convinced.  There is absolutely NO justification for Obama being given the Peace Prize unless it involved George Soros opening his wallet.  That's how he won the Presidency, and this "capstone" just makes me absolutely sure that Obama is the Manchurian Candidate.

The Nobel Committee has just made a mockery of their very existence.

Thanks?

Long term we may thank the Nobel Committee for doing this, because it may mark a point where the world is forced to ask themselves what this man really is. They may realize that there is nothing there. It may mark the point where comedians see that they can ridicule the Bamster without being called racists. Time will tell.

McCain sent an email

He said this was a prize for "being awesome." I do see a lot of negative comment--maybe the Kool-Aid is not working as well as it once did.
