The National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA), also known as the Black Press of America, which is a non-partisan 501(c) 3 tax-exempt organization, has decided to show its disapproval of South Carolina Rep. Joe Wilson's "You Lie" remarks by canceling a convention in the state.
"Rep. Wilson's remarks were racist, disrespectful and a disingenuous violation - not only of President Obama - but to the institution of the presidency and only solidified our position and the importance in not spending Black dollars where Black people are not respected," NNPA Chairman Danny J. Bakewell Sr. said in a statement.
The conference was scheduled for January according to Fox News. Bakewell said the 69-year-old organization, which includes 200 black community newspapers across the country, would exercise its ability to harm the state economically.
"The continued public and blatant disrespect of President Barack Obama by members of Congress will not be rewarded with our dollars nor will a state that continues to uphold America's shameful past by flying the Confederate flag," Bakewell added.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, South Carolina has one of the largest African-American populations by percentage in the country. And, the state falso aces a higher than average jobless rate of 11.8 percent, according to data released by the state's Employment Security Commission. So, the move by the NNPA could directly hurt blacks, even though it is intended to do the opposite.

Liberal racism
Mon, 09/14/2009 - 15:03 ET by Indiana JoeThe core here is that when a liberal looks at a person, they see a race and a gender. When a conservative looks at a person, they see... a person!
This continually confounds and confuses liberals, to whom everything is all about race and gender. When you call a female liar a liar, you're being sexist. And when you call a black liar a liar, you're being racist.
Just thank God Wilson didn't call a black female liar a liar; then he'd be a racist and a sexist!

Mon, 09/14/2009 - 13:47 ET by JasonCOK, I don't know what most of the things you mention in your post are, but the point is that this story is making a claim based on SC's black population and, by extension, its unemployment rates. It helped the bottom line for the hotels and resturants. It didn't create any jobs. Law enforcement got a lot of overtime. It was also a boom for sells of adult beverages. What I meant was this banning of the bike rally was a lost worst to the economy than what a few hundred newpaper folks would have brought in.

Yes, exactly. But the point of the story is that the group is boycotting, taking their business elsewhere, to make a political point. If their boycott has any negative impact on business in SC, it will most likely be on the very people they claim to represent.
Now, lots of us are having fun pointing out how small that impact will be. But the underlying point is, they're basically shooting their "own people" in the foot with this grandstand play. See?

The main point of the article was that canceling the conference by the Black Press would hurt the very people it claims to serve. Although the conference would undoubtedly have brought an infusion of dollars to existing local businesses, esp. those in the service sector, the implication* at the end of Mr. Poor's article that the issue of unemployment could be ameliorated by the group's presence - and therefore that by withdrawing, they are doing indirect harm to the state's employment figures - seems extraneous, i.e. "a bit of a stretch."
