About a year ago, then-Senator and Democratic nominee Barack Obama managed to seize control of the issue of taxes from the Republican Party by promising lower taxes for "95 percent of Americans."
But today it's a drastically different situation. Obama's $787-billion stimulus has been passed into law and the administration is taking on higher deficits, which will only increase if a Democrat health care reform bill passes. It looks as though the president's hand will be forced and he will have to raise taxes. That's begs question - where were the media on this a year ago?
CNBC's Erin Burnett asked Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner at a CNBC made-for-television town hall on Sept. 10 if taxes would be raised. Geithner dodged the question, but Burnett interpreted the dodge to mean yes, as she explained on NBC's Sept. 13 "Meet the Press."
"He, he tried to not answer the question, and in doing so I think he actually did," Burnett explained. "What he did was come out and say, ‘We cut taxes for 95 percent of Americans in the stimulus bill, and the burden of tax increases, if they come, should be on the remainder' - i.e., the top 5 percent. It is clear taxes are going up, and I think the question is when?"
According to Burnett, the administration will attempt to stave off a tax hike until after the 2010 midterm elections, which aren't looking good for the Democratic Party. However, it will be difficult for Obama to make it through the 2012 presidential election without raising taxes.
"But what I hear from economists on Wall Street is, yes, they're going up," Burnett said. "Maybe they can get through the midterm elections, but probably not all the way through a full re-election cycle. So that's where this is going to come through. I mean, if you look at the deficit and you taxed everyone in the top five at 100 percent, you wouldn't get rid of it. So the math just doesn't work and tax increases are going to come in some way, shape or form."
Repeatedly during the 2008 presidential campaign, media cited the so-called non-partisan Tax Policy Center, which touted Obama's tax plan as being more broad-based, while characterizing Republican nominee Sen. John McCain's plan as being just for the rich.

September 14, 2009 - 08:27 ET by kefkaOf course taxes are going up, they are going way, way up on everyone. Its not a bug, its a feature in Obama's plans. The 95% get tax cut campaign promise was an obvious lie, and everyone knew it.
Raising taxes will not matter
September 14, 2009 - 08:32 ET by richb313Obama has done so much damage to our economy already with his near 1 trillion dollar No-Stimulus bill, TARP 2 and the list seems to be never ending. We rely on investnent from overseas to fund our government as that is where the majority of government bonds are sold. China has already said in no uncertain terms that they will not continue buying those bonds if US economic policies keep destroying the value of those bonds. Why should China keep buying something that keeps getting worth less and less as Obama's policies keep driving the value of the dollar in the toilet.
The road to hyper-inflation has already been paved and it might already be too late to turn the ship of state from that road. Good Job Mr. President. It did not take you very long to do this either.

Friday, language was slipped into the bill to ensure (yeah, right) verification parameters are in place (which were NOT there prior) so the illegals among us will not be eligible for the health care plan. They still get medically diagnosed and treated on our dime, but not via the plan.
So, if the language was just inserted Friday night and Wilson made his comments the Wednesday night prior, who was lying?
Uh huh. Obama.

September 14, 2009 - 08:39 ET by legacyrepublicanYes, taxes will go up, but it will benefit the non-profit United States of America, which, by the way, can't seem to balance its budget and pay its bills forever because of its reckless spending, bloat, high debt, and PC approach to doing business.
And, as long as a non-profit blows the money, it is somehow far more morally ethical than a profit run business that works well, keeps to a budget, keeps the customer happy, and pays its bills.

September 14, 2009 - 08:44 ET by Scuba DudeI knew from the moment the LOTUS was elected taxes were going to go up. There is no way to sustain all this spending without doing so. The 95 percent of Americans receiving tax cuts was one of the first lies he ever said. How many of us were screaming that of that 95% over 40% never paid taxes to begin with!!
2010 can't come soon enough so when can start cleaning House. The adults need to take charge again and make sure the LOTUS cannot do anymore harm to the country.
The Obama Administration: THE most fiscally irresponsible Administration EVER
knew it as well
September 14, 2009 - 09:02 ET by jon_torlinI knew it from the first time I even heard about this sorry excuse for a person and it was confirmed when he made that comment to "Joe the Plumber." Then the suspicions about his birthplace origin came in, and even though they vetted John McCain, they didn't vet him, thus proving the dems were going to have him win one way or another.
Thus, this person is a direct violation of the constitution and everything he's done is a violation of the constitution. This happens two ways, #1) because he's never been vetted and spent millions hiding his origins, his signing into law or executive orders are in question and #2) the acts themselves are also a violation of the constitution, such as taking over the banks and car makers.
If the democrats were truly patriots and cared about the constitution, this person (I refuse to dignify him by calling him a man) should have been brought up on impeachment charges in the first couple of months. The list grows bigger of what he's done.
So it's not just the LOTUS that's causing harm, it's the democrats (and the RINOs) who violate their oaths to the Constitution every day they are in session and not taking action as they are in control of the Congress.
These are perhaps some of the biggest criminal acts against the ENTIRE COUNTRY that we are seeing in public view and yet we are still seeing them. I don't buy for a split second that there are good intentions coming from them.
These congressmen need to be recalled, held accountable and replaced with people who care about the country and care about the law.
But will it happen? I fear it won't. But if it does, it might be too late.

September 14, 2009 - 09:13 ET by metaphorsbwithuWhen Obama finally raises taxes on everone, one way or another, the line will be that:
a) Your taxes SHOULD have gone up even higher so, in effect, I am giving you a tax CUT, and
b) You are getting more from your government per tax dollar than ever before in history, so thank me very much for spending your money batter than you could yourself.
metaphorsbwithu
a AND b?
September 14, 2009 - 18:33 ET by DoktorFrankenMakes sense. That's how they've done it in Chicago and Illinois for as long as I can remember. And Hussein has learned from some of the biggest political crooks ever to exist in this and the last century.

September 14, 2009 - 21:51 ET by metaphorsbwithuI can almost guarantee it. Write it down. I said the same thing last year about Obama's fuzzy liberal math when he promised to "save or create" jobs. September 14, 2009 - 11:17 ET by R D HelmAnd don't try and tell me they won't do it, either, as there was a plan for doing exactly that on the back burner back in 1994, when the dems lost congress.

I agree with Rush. It's time for Obama to resign.
B.O. raising taxes
September 14, 2009 - 10:22 ET by grumpyoldbWell DUUUUHHHH....... And of course it will all be Bush's fault because he can't take responsibility for anything he does....
Indirect Taxes Coming
September 14, 2009 - 10:27 ET by slickwillie2001The democratics are desperate to raise taxes while not alienating their base in the grifter community. Look for indirect means of taxation, like this one::
Health Care Reformers Go After Medical Technology: http://tigerhawk.blogspot.com
"...Senate Democrats are proposing to do so directly, by levying a 'value added tax' on medical device companies according to their proportion of U.S. sales. This tax would be without regard to profitability, so it would amount to a capital tax on start-ups and a massive income tax surcharge on profitable companies, varying as net margins do."
This tax would simply be passed on to consumers. The Cap and Trade outrage is also seen as a means of raising tax revenue. I also expect the democratics to begin taxing health care insurance provided by employers as ordinary income.
So my take away from this
September 14, 2009 - 11:13 ET by SnappySo my take away from this then, is that we can safely say he IS going to raise taxes, (while still not calling him a liar) without getting branded a racist now? Or is that still off limits from all but a select few in the press.

Dave's Revelation: This will be it for the American economy
September 14, 2009 - 11:11 ET by R D HelmOur failing economy cannot withstand ANY form of a tax increase, whether it is an in-your-face move, or Max Baucus'"stealth, sneak it in through the toilet" kind.
Is there anyone left among you that still believes that Obama and his handlers actually want the American economy to improve?

September 14, 2009 - 12:34 ET by jon_torlinLet's hope we can get to that point before something terrible happens. And if something terrible happens, unless the military takes control away from the president (their oath is to defend the constitution first), I wouldn't expect ANY help from anyone except ourselves.
Man, I can't think of anything that has us so much on the edge without the mass public apparently knowing about it except maybe between Russia and JFK, but I don't know the history behind that.

I'm no fan of John McCain
September 14, 2009 - 13:58 ET by deerjerkydaveI'm no fan of John McCain but I recall during one of the presidential debates where he claimed that Obama's numbers didn't add up and that there was no way he could pay for all of his promises. Everybody in the liberal media scoffed and no fact checking ever took place. All I remember is the mantra from the liberal media that Obama would cut taxes for 95% of Americans.
What about the Bush tax cuts? Don't they expire soon? Don't they increase taxes for most Americans?
yes
September 14, 2009 - 14:37 ET by jon_torlinIt's kind of a double whammy on everyone, the tax cuts we were enjoying will expire as part of some bill being passed, can't recall right off hand which one it was.
So in addition to the taxes that will go up in general thanks to these bad bills that they want to pass, we'll see an increase in taxes next year if I remember right. As it is, the tax tables for this coming year(as in the end of this year) haven't been altered for some people especially with the so-called tax credit that people got in their paychecks a few months ago and if someone doesn't adjust their W4 accordingly, they might get an unpleasant surprise as the tax credit will be considered income.
That's how I remember it, please correct me if I'm wrong.

*gasp* raise taxes?
September 14, 2009 - 18:38 ET by katainkentthe media is attempting to grease the skids for national acceptance of a tax hike by saying its inevitable and better for the country. "Stave off a tax hike" How about staving off spending! Have they tried that yet!?
Its only about their jobs. Waiting until elections... that just reveals their real motivation. Its not about what works to make the country better. Its about keeping their freaking job.
