Perhaps he's auditioning for a part on MSNBC: The place for Michele Bachmann bashing.
Air America host Montel Williams stepped away from his mild-mannered World Series of Poker playing, Big Orange prescription drug bus driving and medicinal marijuana advocacy roles to fire a salvo at Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., encouraging her to stab herself on his Sept. 3 radio show (h/t Radio Equalizer Brian Maloney):
WILLIAMS (1:30:32): Michelle, slit your wrist.
Go ahead... or, do us all a better thing [sic].
Move that knife up about two feet.
Start right at the collarbone.
Bachmann has been a regular target of lefties in the media time and time again. MSNBC personalities have regularly attacked Bachmann and other conservative women on the network, with Chris Matthew once referring to Bachmann as a "Mata Hari." On MSNBC's Sept. 1 "Countdown with Keith Olbermann," host Keith Olbermann entertained the musings of Dan Savage, a syndicated sex columnist, author and gay-rights advocate, who suggest Bachmann and Fox News host Glenn Beck were trying to get Obama killed.
And Olbermann and the local liberal Minnesota press also went after Bachmann's son on Aug. 13. So, that only begs the question - where is Montel Williams getting his vitriol from?

Blood brothers
September 4, 2009 - 14:50 ET by QueenMumFor informational purposes:
"It is still practiced today, but mostly as a throw-back to tribal
times. The tradition of intertwining arms and drinking wine in Greece and elsewhere, is believed to be a representation of becoming blood brothers.
In modern times, a common blood brother ceremony includes having each person make a small cut, usually on a finger or the forearm,
and then the two cuts are pressed together and bound, the idea being
that each person's blood now flows in the other participant's veins.
However, such an act is considered highly inadvisable from a medical
standpoint due to the risk of blood-borne diseases." (Wikipedia)
Personally, I like the Greek idea better.

Montel and Metaphors
September 4, 2009 - 13:54 ET by ChuchulainnAt the risk of stirring up a hornet's nest, and stepping on some toes, I must say that Motherbelt hit the nail on the head with his comment about Montel being too stupid to understand a Metaphor. However, when President Obama says things like, "You might say America is a Muslim nation," it is not a metaphor. Obama doesn't do metaphors.
Here is another ...
September 4, 2009 - 14:07 ET by SentryDanHere is another case of a person not realizing what is going on. Since Rep Bachmann is against obama's policies, she must be a racist. Remember, both Montel and obama are black. Well, obama is only part black.
Even though has never said anything racial concerning obama, she is a racist in the minds of the liberals because she is against obama's policies. Hell, everyone of us who is against obama's policies is a racist. And many of us are even worse, we are "Right Wing Terrorists". (Actually, we are American Patriots.) Those who do not have the best interests of the country at heart are the terrorists.
Remember folks, Freedom isn't Free. It was bought with the blood and sacrifice of the men and women who are serving and who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces.
For those who fought for it, Freedom has a flavor that the protected will never know.
Also remember folks, that the way to SUPPORT THE TROOPS is to support their mission. Anyone who says that they support the troops but don't support their mission is lying about supporting the troops. And if you want to know, yes I do have a dog in the fight, he is a United States Marine.

I'm sure you don't do that in day to day life, but I can't think of even a rhetorical sense where it doesn't sound plain vile. The fact that he is a former Marine, along with his work with PPA, and his struggle with MS, had earned him my respect, but this extremely hateful and vitriolic diatribe that he aimed at Michelle Bachmann has ended whatever positive opinion I have had of him. This is something that one would expect to hear from the outer-fringe Left, and not, I used to think, from someone who has a background like Mr. Williams.
I had no idea until this article on NB that Williams was doing a show on AirAmerica...It's a shame that he has succumbed to the insanity that has consumed so many on the deranged Left.

Well actually
September 4, 2009 - 20:14 ET by nwahsBachmann brought up the grizzly deed of people slitting wrists as some sort of "covenant", and to be "blood brothers" .I was about 21 or so during the Jamestown massacre in Guyana, where a charismatic nut job, Jim Jones, encouraged people to kill themselves in some sort of covenant. Having a politician encourage people to slit their wrists as part of a covenant, sends chills down my spine and I don't care what party they are.
The story here is not the crude joke Montel made out of Bachmann's grizzly suggestion. Its the fact that politician finds it acceptable to use terms like "covenant" and violent images of people slitting their wrists in a political speech. You keep making excuses for these anti-social nut jobs, and you could encourage another Jamestown or Waco. Its safe to say, when the subject has drifted to wrist slitting, you have exited the area of helpful, healthy, discussion and are firmly in the area of manipulation and weird.

September 4, 2009 - 23:48 ET by The7SticksFirst of all, Montel is ripping off Phil Hendrie's offer that if she would slit her wrists, then he would drop support for a public option healthcare plan. It's all based off of a clip of some townhall rhetoric Miss Bachmann made, where she said she would slit her wrists before she supported a public option. As far as I'm concerned, she can share the same closet with Barbara Boxer because they're both morons regardless of political ideology. Honestly, you should follow Phil Hendrie's advice, drop the Democratic and Republican bullcrap and become a free man who doesn't care about political ideology. I'm one and proud of it.

Where is the outrage against Montel Williams' Death Threat?
September 5, 2009 - 10:51 ET by DaMamaMontel Williams is an intolerant, hateful man. He must have read the Alec Baldwin playbook about attacking conservatives. Baldwin said on Letterman during the Clinton years that Rep. Henry Hyde (and his family!) should be KILLED because of the impeachment hearings against Clinton.
Now we have Montel Williams telling Michelle Bachman to kill herself. Will someone please explain to me how these liberal lunatics can get away with this stuff? If a conservatives says anything even close to this type of hatred gets crucified in the media. What a double standard!
Williams is typical of liberals today. They wear their hatred on their sleeve. For them it's free speech. For conservatives, it's intolerance. What a world we live in!

It was just so off the wall weird, and of course not literal. Weird, not literal.

And not you personaly of course, but those participating in the thread. The Blog introduces this story as Montel makes a hideous remark that someone should kill themselves. Well that works, I read the blog and begin to seeth inside "how disgusting!"
Then I click on the link to find out what type of horrible devil's voice is inside Montel, to convert him from a fairly sensible, empathetic, Hollywood prostitute to a such a hateful Hollywood prostitute. Imagine my surprise when I hear him chuckling! "HOW SADISTIC! Not only does he wish the woman off herself, he's laughing when he does it!" Then I recognize he is reading Bachmann's words about this covenant. I know the word has many uses, but it seems to stir up Biblical images in me. It is certainly sounding more important that a simple agreement or pact. Its a covenant! Sounds slightly holy.
Then Montel, who is struggling with the text, gets to the part about the wrist slitting and blood brothers pledge in this (holy?) covenant and he laughs even more. He cracks the joke that she should slit her own wrist or better yet, her throat! Disappointment overwhelms me as I realize I've been a victim of bait and switch. This wasn't some callous vile wish in a vacuum. It was a musing, a joke over a clumsy line. I felt like the little kid that gets the cardboard truck in that bank commercial. "This is junk! I want the real truck!" Why did they screw me? I patronize them, why did they give me the cardboard truck?
Then I see 50 or so kids playing happily with their cardboard trucks. Excitedly they howl "It even has a real cardboard motor!" I'm just pissed because its cardboard. So I got the idea to give the truck back in a flamboyant way. Its still cardboard, but now the kids have to pretend its real, or admit they were gaga over cardboard.

I thought I answered your question here.
Let me elaborate. It was hyperbole, the same type of hyperbole used in this blog. Calling it a clumsy line is an acquiescence. I think she's a fruitcake, and the the fact that she chose the word "covenant" was no accident. But calling it a clumsy line instead of getting into her ideas that God is speaking to her, is the fastest way to get to the duplicity in this particular blog.
Now that I've called her a fruitcake this will break off into a branch about that, and how God speaks through people every day. Clumsy line was the fastest way to get down to brass tacks - duplicity.
For the record, I do think God reveals Himself through people, just not the people that yell the loudest about it.
nwahs, Oh, I know what
September 6, 2009 - 16:55 ET by hydrodynDMnwahs,
Oh, I know what you claim you were doing. I just don't believe you. My quoting you was to show why that is.
There's a line between being hyperbolic or sarcastic and playing dumb or being disingenuous.
Well all your quoting did
September 6, 2009 - 17:15 ET by nwahsWell all your quoting did is prove you don't know what hyperbole is.
Read a little more.
There's a line between being hyperbolic or sarcastic and playing dumb or being disingenuous
That statement is dead wrong. Its false. Most times hyperbole involves being disingenuous. This blog about Montel calling for someone to kill themselves is hyperbole and it is in fact disingenuous. Hyperbole is a conscious distortion of reality. So where in the hell could there possibly be a "line."That statement shows me you know nothing about hyperbole.
Your "dumb" crack is just a testimony that you are out of facts. Duly noted.
nwahs, Most times
September 6, 2009 - 17:55 ET by hydrodynDMnwahs,
I respectfully disagree. Hyperbole and sarcasm are rhetorical tools. Within the context of an argument, they are typically (but not always) used to exaggerate an opponent's position to show that their argument leads to unacceptable results.
This is what you claim you were doing.
Being disingenuous means you are making statements for the sake of an argument that you don't honestly believe. You might also call this playing dumb in cases where the beliefs you are pretending to adhere to are arguably or obviously wrong.
Using hyperbole or sarcasm works if the other guy knows that's what you are doing. Being disingenuous relies on the other guy not knowing what you are doing.
So I would say that most times hyperbole can't involve being disingenuous.
I think you were being disingenuous.
You were pretending to view Bachmann's words as a literal call for (in your words) self mutilation, knowing that she was only speaking figuratively. When this obvious fact was pointed out to you, you decided to criticize the graphic nature of her words. When your previous posts were pointed out to you, you decided that your whole point was to use hyperbole to demonstrate a flaw in the original post.
If that is, in fact, what your original plan was, then I think the convoluted manner in which you did it undermined that plan.
You're wrong
September 6, 2009 - 19:02 ET by nwahsI'm speaking of political hyperbolic rhetoric, not a generic literary device. Political hyperbolic rhetoric is by its very nature disingenuous. Its a scare tactic! I gave you Bachmann's words in the exact same distorted representation as the author of this blog gave you Montels words. The author of the blog created an obvious, malicious (scary), exaggeration of Montel's joke, and I did the exact same thing Bachmann's words. And if it wasn't painfully obvious that it was an exaggeration, I put in my tagline she was advocating self mutilation in response to health care reform. Yes its disingenuous, its obviously maliciously distorted. Its hyperbolic political rhetoric - like the blog - EXACTLY like the blog.
Now I did introduce some things in posts that are not hyperbole. I don't think she chose the word "covenant" by accident. I think she chose it for its Biblical connotations. Most people in politics use the word "agreement " or "pact" or "contract." Covenant? This is not just a fight, it implies its a holy fight. Thats not hyperbole. Thats an observation. If I were to call it her own little Jihad, that would be hyperbolic political rhetoric.
Still it fairly obvious the theme through the posts was "if you're saying Montel is encouraging suicide, I maintain Bachmann is advocating self mutilation." Get it don't get it. Don't care. Believe it don't believe it. Don't care. I'm not going to dissect a gumball to prove its a gumball. Its boring.
→ Not surprising
September 6, 2009 - 19:14 ET by Cool ArrowAnd it's not surprising tha, once again, you can't let go of a story if it gives you an opportunity to trash a conservative woman.
Your tenacity really shows through against Bachmann, almost as much as your defense of Letterman's child-rape joke.
It's funny. You just can't let go.

nwahs, OK. So what I've
September 6, 2009 - 20:04 ET by hydrodynDMnwahs,
OK. So what I've taken away from this whole thing is that you are willing to post disingenuous comments to try to make a point.
Well, that's a perfect way to get people to not take you seriously.
Is nwahs being sarcastic, does he honestly believe what he's posting or is he purposely expressing ideas that he doesn't actually believe in order to make a point?
Who know. Who cares.

→ Yes, clumsy
September 5, 2009 - 20:22 ET by Cool ArrowI wouldn't have used those words. They are overly descriptive.
I wouldn't refer to Barack Obama, Idi Amin, or Wayne Williams as typical black men either, but I have Obama's permission to say it with impunity.

QueenMum, Actually, now
September 5, 2009 - 19:41 ET by hydrodynDMQueenMum,
Actually, now that I think about it, I think I should have use the word "figuratively" instead of "metaphorically".
Either way, nwahs didn't seem to get the point.

Sorry - not sure what you meant.

Someone say double? I'll have one
September 5, 2009 - 19:36 ET by nwahsAs you mentioned in the earlier post, I think it was the case of Bachmann creating a metaphor and Montel joking about the metaphor. But that doesn't make good copy.

Montel's problem...
September 6, 2009 - 08:02 ET by riverratMontel perfectly demonstrates the radical Leftist's knee jerk reaction to anyone wishing to debate any issue upon which the Leftists have taken a stand....
Hurl insults... The two most common are "racist" and "radical right wing-nuts with "birthers" becoming more popular...
Those the Left can't convince, owing to their lack of brilliance or the facts - they attempt to befuddle with bullshit and insults.
