Shatner, Greenpeace Team Up on PR Stunt to Boldly Go Where No Green Vandals Have Gone Before

Go green or have your private business robocalled and vandalized. It happened to a computer manufacturer in a Greenpeace publicity stunt earlier this week that included William Shatner.

Greenpeace and the Canadian-born actor joined forces against Hewlett-Packard (NYSE:HPQ) and accused the company of "breaking green promises" for not producing products completely free of PVC plastic and brominated flame retardants. Activists from the radical environmental group painted a giant message on the roof of Hewlett-Packard's headquarters in Palo Alto, Calif. that read "Hazardous Products."

And in addition to the rooftop graffiti, Greenpeace set up an automated message to dial HP employee's numbers and then play them a recorded message from Shatner.

"This is William Shatner speaking. You, HP, promised me a toxic-free computer by 2009," Shatner said. "Now my friends at Greenpeace tell me that I have to wait until 2011. What's up with that? Please, ask your leader, [HP CEO] Mark Hurd, to make computers that are free of toxic PVC plastic and brominated flame retardants just as Apple's done."

A representative from HP told the Business and Media Institute the company is committed to environmental responsibility and reducing the use of BFR/PVC in all their products.

"The unconstructive antics at HP's headquarters did nothing to advance the goals that all who care about the environment share," a spokeswoman said in an e-mail. "HP will continue its efforts to develop new products and programs around the globe that help the company, its business partners and customers conserve energy, reduce materials use and reduce waste through responsible reuse and recycling. HP supports industry efforts to eliminate BFR and PVC because of potential e-waste issues.  HP is a worldwide leader in e-waste recycling. HP has recycled one billion pounds of electronic products from 1987-2007 and has committed to recycling another billion pounds between 2008-2011."

HP declined to comment on the possibility of pressing charges against Greenpeace.

Shatner's off his meds

Shatner's off his meds again... and Greenpeace is trying to find relevance. Please don't hate them, they're infantile bahavior is a function of infantile mentoring.

Ah, hell- go ahead and hate- they deserve it!

   hhhmmm.... what's that

hhhmmm.... what's that travel booking place Shatner is always popping up on my tv and promoting?  Guess we may need to re-evaluate it's 'desirability'.

Well, now...

...my respect level for Shatner, whom I have always respected, has fallen to zero.  Zilch.  Nada.

I always go under the

I always go under the assumption that most actors I like are liberal whack jobs, but why do they have to go and confirm it?  :)

Shocked. Disappointed. And Yes, Disillusioned.

William Shatner is, of course, entitled to his beliefs. But to act in concert with Greenpeace shows that he's either an off-the-hook radical, or that he was talked into doing what he naively thought was some sort of PSA. I hope it's the latter, but he now goes on the ass clown list. And that kinda breaks my heart.

Funny, in the 80s he was

Funny, in the 80s he was known as somewhat of a conservative. Isn't one supposed to get less liberal as they age? Yes, it must be the meds.

Anyone think our DOJ

Will take any interest in these "extremest acts"? Neither do I. Why dont they just stand around the front doors with clubs intimidating the employees?

  Who woulda thought

Who woulda thought Shatner would turn out to be a home-grown terrorist.

Now you know if this had been an abortion clinic the full weight of the federal government would have come down with the intent to prosecute to the fullest intent of the law.

As for Hewlett-Packard, this shows just how far they have sunk

Their security sucks, as these eco-terrorists should have never been able to get up on the roof of their HQ to begin with.

What if they had been some bomb-toting camel-washers?

Ask yourself: Do I want a good paying job, or do I want a government hand out. Its that simple!

Desperation

Looks like he is desperate to revive his career. I noticed that he was making token appearances on Conan last week, much like Abe Vigoda has. That's real desperation. Maybe he wants to star in the upcoming Star Trek XVIII when a gamma-ray burst turns dead people into zombies.

Even trekkies. . . .

...are getting tired of this has been. And Leonard Nimoy's a liberal too. And we mustn't forget that 'outrage' Shatner felt when left out of what's his name's queer nuptials. >>gag<<

Desperate indeed!

Phone calls

Were the employees called at home? If so, how did these eco-terriosts get a list of the employees and their private phone numbers?

“When all government...in little as in great things, shall be drawn to Washington as the center of all power, it will render powerless the checks provided...” Thomas Jefferson

First of what are the eco

First of what are the eco terrorists think they are abolishing from the planet now?  PVC is the piping used in the plumbing of most American homes and businesses.  I just got a drink of water from the kitchen sink faucet that was connected to PVC piping that runs throughout the house and out to the water main which is also made of PVC pipe that runs under the street throughout town where I live.

Bromide Flame Retardants or BFRs have a widespread number of applications because they are
exceptionally effective at fire prevention. In addition to reducing the
likelihood that an item will ignite, brominated flame retardants hinder
the spread of the fire, and provide valuable extra time in the early
stages of a fire when it is much easier to escape. A room fire can very
quickly escalate to the point where enough heat is generated that all
combustible material in the room bursts into flames. This situation is
known as flashover and can occur in a matter of minutes from ignition. Brominated flame
retardants slow down the initial burn rate and thereby can help
increase the time to flashover, giving the occupants more time to
escape.

Now does any of the above sound like we should all get on the roof of our nearest computer store and paint signs on it like Greenshit did?  No, the Greenshit dumba**es should be arrested, tried and convicted of eco terrorism.

By the way, I am typing this on a HP laptop.  I know that it is made of PVCs and I hope that HP put BFRs where appropriate.  I don't want my office to burn down because some component went haywire or a lightening strike sent a charge through the house to the laptop and it caught on fire as a result because it didn't have BFRs protecting me.

Greenshit - f**k off! That goes for you, Shitner and your Pricecrap company.

Nice rant!

You okay now? lol

I think what's missing from the initial post is that Greenpeace and other eco-terrorists don't really care what the computer's made from, or what the chemical flavor-of-the-week to-be-banned is; what they really want is a drastic reduction in population with those remaining living in muddy fields in places like Bethel, New York while some talentless folk band is blathering on about some other man-caused disaster made effectively unintelligble by the massive amounts of hallucinogens absorbed into what amounts to already-mush brain cells. But I could be wrong...

Well done, jdhawk!  Brief,

Well done, jdhawk!  Brief, to the point, irrefutable.  And I like the name you gave for the whale fluffers.

I always thought Shatner was playing the role of "Mad-Cow" sufferer on his last show.  Now we sadly learn it was no act at all.

jdhawk... Nail on

Nail on head...

Doubling down on stupid is not a particularly good idea. ~Andrew Breitbart

If only we could get into

If only we could get into Shatner's house and check out how green he really is and then publicize it.  I'd love to know what seats he gets when he flies, does he fly economy because it seats more people and so is greener than first class?

Ed Begley Jr. is about the only green advocate I can respect because he lives his whole life green.  I saw once he didn't go to the Sundance film festival because he couldn't reconcile himself to drive or fly there and use energy.  Not how I'd live my life, but at least he's honest (from what I know).

The problem with Ed Begley Jr

is that even though he's a fanatic believer in the "save the earth" crap and lives his life "green" ( and I'm becoming tired of that stupid-sounding terminology) my guess is that he  supports the antics of GreenShit and people like them whether he admits it or not.

Jr.  still does everything he can politically and supports legislation that impacts the lifestyles of people who do not bow to the Green Flag and who live a different lifestyle.  Ed Begley Jr. is a jerk in my book.

In other words, it's OK for him to pick his cause and his lifestyle, but if someone chooses to live differently, then that person needs to change because he/she are obviously somehow evil and "don't give a s**t"  about THE Environment!

I'd bet Jr. ranks the mud-sucking killifish in Kalifornia as more important than  the "greedy" farmers who can't get water to irrigate their crops because of the efforts of turd-heads like him!

Typical

These acts are much like the ones that the eco-terrorists pull on that program, 'Whale Wars'.  I don't know the full story in either situation but I am inclined to disbelieve the people breaking laws and, sometimes, causing physical harm to others.  In other words, taking the law into their own hands.

Invading people's property, vandalizing, and invasions of privacy are simply not the way to handle companies.

In praise of Hewlett Packard

I have had a HP home since 2001.  First, I bought a notebook from them, and so impressed was I with the quality and the fact that I could easily upgrade it on my own, I bought a HP PC.  I've always used HP printers - to include one I bought this past week.

I now have an HP printer, PC, notebook, and monitor, among other HP merchandise.  The HP notebook - purchased at the EVIL Wal-Mart for a song - is carried about in an HP backpack.  I have HP products all over my home, as they make good products, and by buying them, I not only support the U.S. economy, but the Texas economy as well, as they are based in a sprawling headquarters in northwest Houston.

Thank you, Greenpeace, and Mr. Shatner, for giving me yet another reason to buy their products!  In fact, this makes me extra thankful that I decided to buy an HP printer this past week.  I think I'll go buy some more HP inkjet paper and photo paper as well.
