With a cooler-than-usual winter and a mild temperatures leading up to the beginning of summer, global warming alarmists are finding they are losing steam in the debate. But "NBC Nightly News" won't give up the fight.
On the June 15 broadcast, anchor Brian Williams noted the peculiar weather patterns along the East Coast.
"The weather along the eastern seaboard has been more like Scotland in October lately," Williams said. "Then came the first of the Internet stories, some of them written by learned people in the weather field, wondering if summer as we know it was just not going to happen this year in some areas because of the high up air currents over this country that we can't see."
According to NBC chief environmental affairs correspondent Anne Thompson, the phenomena are caused by the a jet stream dropping deeper into the United States than is usual for this time of year.
"Though summer doesn't officially start for another week, the run up has been most unseasonable," Thompson said. "A soggy, chilly tableau for Chicago's weekend art fair. A tornado threat delaying America's pastime in Denver. Hail transforming the streets of Bend, Oregon. Driving the cold weather, since Memorial Day - the jet stream that has stayed farther south than usual."
But Thompson reliance told viewers not to let the current weather dispel any beliefs they have in global warming, because warmer weather is on the way.
"This less-than-beach-like weather may have you wondering about global warming," Thompson said. "This cold spell is a snapshot, just a couple of weeks. Global warming is something that happens over decades and centuries. So hang in there, summer and its warmth is on the horizon."
That news of warm weather and theory of global warming was reassuring for Williams. "Glad to hear that. I was beginning to worry," he said.

The results of Iran's presidential election are in: Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has declared victory. His opponent is claiming ballot fraud and wants an investigation. And if that doesn't work, he's going to make a documentary about global warming.

Tue, 06/16/2009 - 14:47 ET by In ExcessThe media can use this cool period as a reference point against the time when it does start to warm up (back to normal temps) and they can then try to freak out the few who might still believe this crap.

Those of you above 40 th parallel, more noctilucent clouds
Tue, 06/16/2009 - 15:58 ET by upcountrywaterFor reasons no one fully understands, noctilucent clouds
tend to be most intense during years of solar minimum. 2009 is such
a year. The sun is in the pits of the deepest solar minimum in nearly
a century, and many researchers expect a banner year for these mysterious
clouds. Browse the gallery for more of last night's display:
Strange Clouds
"Noctilucent clouds are a relatively new phenomenon,"
says Gary Thomas, a professor at the University of Colorado who
studies NLCs. "They were first seen in 1885" about
two years after the powerful eruption of Krakatoa hurled plumes
of volcanic ash as much as 80 km high in Earth's atmosphere.
Ash from the Indonesian volcano caused such splendid sunsets
worldwide that evening sky watching became a popular past time.
One sky watcher in particular, a German named T.W. Backhouse
who is often credited with the discovery of noctilucent clouds,
noticed something odd. He stayed outside after the sun had set
and, on some nights, saw wispy filaments glowing electric blue
against the black sky. Scientists of the day figured they were
some curious manifestation of volcanic ash.
Eventually the ash settled and the vivid sunsets of Krakatoa
faded. Yet the noctilucent clouds remained. "It's puzzling,"
says Thomas. "Noctilucent clouds have not only persisted,
but also spread." A century ago the clouds were confined
to latitudes above 50o; you had to go to places like
Scandinavia, Russia and Britain to see them. In recent years
they have been sighted as far south as Utah and Colorado.

How amazing that the media
Tue, 06/16/2009 - 16:46 ET by StogieGuyHow amazing that the media file reports that are absolutely one-sided, stilted and idiotic and continue to get away with it! What they're doing here is so clear that it's incredible. When the weather is cold, then we're not supposed to think about it - it's the long trend that matters. Then, as soon as there's a heat wave it's "oh my God, look at what global warming has wrought!!!!!"
To anyone with a brain, these reporters clearly don't understand (or care to understand) the science of climate patterns. Those of you who work for NBC should stop reading now, because the paragraph below contains science content which may result in a nose bleed for you.
As a climatologist myself, I tend to believe that elevated CO2 probably contributes a little bit of greenhouse effect. Just a little bit. The models that are being quoted use lousy data and wildly exaggerated assumptions. My feeling is that the effect from increased CO2 and methane is probably there, but is so small that normal changes in solar energy output (which no one understands) certainly run the climate system. Overall increase in temperature over the past centrury due to GHGs is likely to be less than 0.2 C. Most of the 1.1 C increase can be attributed to active solar patterns and the overall shift of the Earth out of the little ice age pattern.
In other words, it's all about politics and they're full of it.
Right On The Button
Tue, 06/16/2009 - 19:05 ET by dboOverall increase in temperature over the past centrury due to GHGs is likely to be less than 0.2 C.
This number is consistent with the opinion of climate experts such as Nir Shaviv, Richard Lindzen and Fred Singer.

Our problem is we think
Tue, 06/16/2009 - 17:04 ET by MidAmericaOur problem is we think when we hear about the prospect of global warming that it refers to something that has to do with the weather. But no.... global warming is a state of mind. If you believe in global warming then a whole new way a seeing the world suddenly comes into focus. Environmentalism is the religion of the leftists and global warming is its most sacred cause.

Tue, 06/16/2009 - 17:26 ET by StogieGuyExactly!! When it's a cold spring, well that means absolutely nothing (unless its in the 1890s - when it's an example of normal); when there's a heat wave, THAT is global warming and THAT is reality.
Funny how so many high temperature records were set in the 1930s and how none of these numbskulls care to talk about things like that.
You’ve noticed this too?
Tue, 06/16/2009 - 19:24 ET by ReaverYou’ve noticed this too? Cool spring, early and late frosts? Just a short term weather phenomenon. Every heat wave, every wildfire, every drought, every flood, every tornado, every hurricane is proof positive of man-made global warming. It’s the double standard squared. Can you smell the desperation? Mother nature just refuses to cooperate. With Obama in office and the Copenhagen conference coming they are so close to getting their dream they can almost taste it, and now the weather just won’t play ball.
If stupidity got us into this mess,
then why can't it get us out?
