Now that Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala. has been named the ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, some on the far-left are gunning for Alabama's junior senator. The battle is happening as President Barack Obama is on the verge of naming an appointee to the Supreme Court to fill void of Justice David Souter. Some of the left-wing points that suggest Sessions has racist tendencies were incorporated into a May 6 Politico story by John Bresnahan and Manu Raju.

"By elevating Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions to their top spot on the Senate Judiciary Committee, Republicans have selected their chief inquisitor for President Barack Obama's first Supreme Court nominee: a Southern, white conservative man who has drawn fire for racially insensitive comments in the past," Bresnahan and Manu Raju wrote. "Democrats like how this is looking."

The story sets up Sessions to be on the defensive about race by spinning the senator's own history. According to the Politico story, Sessions had been accused of unfairly targeting black civil rights workers for election fraud charges as a federal prosecutor during a 1986 Senate hearing for a spot on the federal bench.

That incident involved an unsuccessful prosecution of three black activists in Perry County, Ala., on voting fraud charges, according to a March 20, 1986 Washington Post story by Howard Kurtz. It ended up being one of the points of contention during the hearing.

"I find the Perry County case very, very troublesome." WHO Kennedy said to the Post in 1986, despite telling then-Sen. Jeremiah Denton, R-Ala. in previous conversations "he had no problem" with those prosecutions.

However, Perry County, Ala. is still a place notorious for abuse of the voting system. A July 14, 2008, National Public Radio report noted that state and federal officials are still looking into accusations of fraud by government officials, both black and white, for inflating absentee ballot counts.

One of the other charges levied against Sessions during his 1986 hearing, which was included in a post by the liberal TalkingPointsMemo blog cited by the Politico story was that he called a black former assistant U.S. Attorney in Alabama named Thomas Figures "boy."

But, as a March 21, 1986 United Press International story by Robert Doherty reported, Figures and a witness changed their tune about those accusations during Sessions 1986 hearing, a point ignored by those attempting to smear the Alabama senator by dredging up this 23-year-old story (emphasis added):

"Asked by Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., whether Sessions had made any other similar remarks, Figures replied, ‘I was regularly called 'boy.'"

Asked by Kennedy who had made the remark, Figures said, ''Mr. Sessions did, one or two of the other assistants.''

Later, under questioning by Denton, Figures detailed only one alleged instance when Sessions had called him "boy." Figures refused to detail his charges to reporters after he testified.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Edward Vulevich, whom Figures also said had called him "boy," categorically denied the charge, and praised Sessions as "a man of utmost integrity."

Justice Department officials produced a document signed by Assistant U.S. Attorney Ginny Granade, whom Figures said may have overheard Sessions call him "boy."

"I have never heard Mr. Sessions refer to Mr. Figures as 'boy' or to call him by anything other than his given name," said her statement, issued in Mobile about an hour after Figures made the charge.

It's worth noting that Sessions was one of the few Republicans to support Eric Holder's nomination, despite questions about President Bill Clinton's pardon of Marc Rich, as the nation's first African-American attorney general.

Racists

You know, some years ago, I heard a prominent, well known black guy, (can't remeber who) made an interesting argument about all of this racism stuff, mostly about the "N Word".

He suggested that from this day forward, ALL black people should henceforth refer to themselves as the "N Word" and encourage the entire world to do the same; much like when in the 1970's, black people began to refer to themselves as "Blacks" instead of "Colored People", which was for years considered polite; but no more.

Here is my point: I believe that, henceforth, all white male, Christian, Conservative, Republicans and Independents shall accept and proclaim the label "Racsists" and encourage the entire world to refer to us as such. (Half the world already does anyway).

Is that all you got?

Incredibly weak stuff here, and Politico should be ashamed for repeating such nonsense, but that's much of Politico's stock in trade.

In military lingo, what the democratics are doing is 'preparing the battlefield'. Re "democrats (sic) like how this is looking" that's hilarious. Democratics are FAR worse off with Sessions in place of Specter. Specter's departure may be the gift that keeps on giving.

Sessions

Well, naturally it flows that the dems are going to go on the attack.  It's what they do, politics of personal destruction.

It's my understanding that in order to move a nominee out of committee, the Judiciary must have one affirmative vote in the minority.  With Specter in that position, it would have been easier to ramrod any Obama nominee through the committee.  Sessions won't be such a pushover.

Too bad, so sad, unlike all of this unwanted "advice" we're getting from the democrats about what is "wrong with the party".....they don't get to tell us who gets what committee.  They only get to staff their own committees, as Arlen found out, much to his woe.  I love it, he's now the most junior senator on their side.

I hope he fails, too.

Senator Sessions is a

RACISTS

That didn't take long, did it.

And yet...

And yet, a senior senator who was an active member of the KKK gets a free pass.  Disgusting.

Of course the left is

Of course the left is upset, they lost their GOP man in the Judiciary committee who would rollover for any nominee that Obama would offer up.  One GOP must vote for the nominee for them to be accepted.  Party line votes won't confirm a nominee...  So Sessions is the man to watch.  Bahahaha, the irony, Spector inadvertantly screwed over Obama by switching parties... Bahahahaha, bahahaha, Oh this is rich.

Just think if we had the power to eject the other RINOs, the loss of committee spots to the libs in GOP clothing would bring the lib cause to a standstill.  Hahahahahahahahaahaaa  Let's not forget Specter was on 5 committees, yeah, Specter's departure was a gift from heaven!

Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, starving the poor one gallon of ethanol at a time. Fill your tank with E85 and cull a village.

I have been way past

I have been way past FURIOUS with this since I had seen it last night...the filthy filthy enemies within Never Quit...ever...this is outrageous....

Sessions is one of the best Senators we have in congress, he led the way against McC/Kennedy Amnesty BS too... Like he said...we have some in the Senate and behind the scenes who think they are the Masters of the Universe...and that we do all over the place!

You go Jeff...and do not back down, God knows we need you now more than ever as head of the Minority Party on the Judiciary...and God willing you can persuade some members on that panel see the light when and if they vote a critter O nominated out to go to the Senate floor.

God willing they won't...but I fear with some of the RINOs on the committee, they will.

Bada-boom

Here's another well-deserved slap at Politico: Jeff Sessions Deserves Better Than Cheap Shots from Politico: http://www.redstate.com

An accusation is as good as a guilty verdict

According to the Politico story, Sessions had been accused of unfairly targeting black civil rights workers for election fraud charges as a federal prosecutor during a 1986 Senate hearing for a spot on the federal bench.

When you are a Republican, libs treat an unproven or unfounded accusation as a guilty verdict and hang it around your neck for the rest of your life.

Republicans need to start pointing out that they are called racists or bigots any time they are a threat to the liberal agenda.  While real bigotry exists, when I hear those words I tend to tune them out or disbelieve the accusation.

When you put the clowns in charge, don't be surprised when a circus breaks out.

nkv... Republicans need

nkv...

Republicans need to start pointing out that they are called racists or bigots any time they are a threat to the liberal agenda.

Exactly...I have been waiting for them in unison to fight back for years now...this is so past old, and they act like wussies, terrified of the msm, their voting  base because of the msm...if you don't fight back, you lose, you twits...and you expect us to keep voting for you?!

Our next president...

Jeff Sessions is my hero. I heard him interviewded a couple of years ago, and I just don't think any politician alive today could beat him in a debate. I would love to see him do battle with that fraudulent affirmative action nincompoop, Barak Obama. Of course the all the windows in the White House would have to be left open for a month before Sessions could move in.

Politico

Is just another arm of the MSM (biased, untrustworthy, and incomplete) and thus, unworthy of our attention or linking.  I avoid ii as much as I do the NYTims. For Washington news to trust, see the Washington Examiner, National Review, and the New York Post, (and bits in nysun.com.)  Otherwise, just realize that it's propaganda!

It wouldn't surprise me if Politico is represented in the daily

conference calls that "journalist" have with White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel.

So let's be fair to these Politico reporters. They are only doing what they have been directed to do by Emanuel. Orders from the White House have to be obeyed.
