The attacks on Miss California Carrie Prejean have gotten so bad that even same-sex marriage champion and San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom is taking notice.
Prejean, the runner-up of last Sunday's Miss USA pageant, has been the target of reports from the Hollywood media intelligentsia after her feud with gossip blogger Perez Hilton for the stance she took on same-sex marriage. And Newsom, who had just announced his intentions to run for governor of California, has noticed.
"I want to challenge her on her point-of-view," Newsom said in an appearance at Sapphire Energy, a bio-tech company, which aired on NBC's San Francisco affiliate on April 23. "She challenged me on my point-of-view and she spoke her conscience. What more can you ask? I speak my conscience, she should speak hers. So, I think she's being a little unfairly maligned."
Newsom might have realized Prejean's point-of-view is the same as a majority of California voters. Last November, California voters adopted Proposition 8, which established marriage as a union between a man and a woman, by a 52 percent to 48 percent margin.
Prejean has been the subject of continued scorn from Hilton and has been the subject of misleading media reports that she is in danger of losing her Miss California crown for her stance, which hasn't been popular with those in Hollywood.

Oh Lord....
April 23, 2009 - 21:43 ET by SRPwrdGiven how much our party SEEMINGLY ruined this state, he might just have a chance.
Anyone in a red state want to trade for a beautiful home in the sunny Central Valley? You can see the mountains 5 miles away right after it rains! It was a balmy 100 degrees but a day ago!

WOW! A liberal who believes in freedom of speech?
April 23, 2009 - 17:24 ET by c5thenHow refreshing. Most of them are just like Hilton.
Does he really believe this, or is he campaigning for office in a state where 52% of the voters agree with Prejean?
I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

Broadening his Horizons
April 23, 2009 - 17:27 ET by allanfHe is broadening his horizons, and his voter appeal. He knows he has to play outside of San Francisco.
It's pure politics to him.
Of course it's pure politics
April 23, 2009 - 18:24 ET by StewMcKinOf course it's pure politics - he has an excellent chance of winning the governorship. Look who he's up against: Jerry Brown, Diane Sweinstein, Antonio Villaraigosa...and oh yeah, probably a republican or 2. But given that Schwarzenegger raised the sales tax a point, raised the SWT, and doubled the car registration (which was already insane compared to most states), it's not looking like a GOP year. Oh right, it's California anyway.
I totally agree Stew, Arnold did better against the predator!

April 23, 2009 - 20:13 ET by StewMcKinArnold's problem is that he caved to the public on everything. He couldn't stick to his principles. He still has that "actor" mentality, the need to be loved and worshiped by his fans. After all, he's gonna need to do something after the governorship. If he loses his fans over his politics, we all lose (so much for Eraser 2).
LOL! Yes Stew.... you are correct here. Totally spot on....
April 23, 2009 - 20:39 ET by pahuberU know he was much different when he was an actor.

April 23, 2009 - 17:30 ET by sherylsimsIt isn't like he came out and AGREED with her. He only is agreeing with her right to have an opinion. Any reasonable person would see that. Maybe he is just kissing up to the few reasonable people we have here in California.
Fear Works
April 23, 2009 - 18:47 ET by DustBunny01Mayor Gavin Newsom knows that his statement regarding gay marriage is what helped doom the fight against Prop 8.
So, Newsom is simply trying to prevent someone from creating a commercial that attaches his statement "Whether you like it or not," with the attack statement by Perez Hilton against Miss California.
I don't blame Perez Hilton
April 23, 2009 - 19:10 ET by mostlymoderateI don't blame Perez Hilton as much for being a media whore as I do for whoever gave the red-light to have him appear on the Miss America pageant to begin with. Just as I blame those voters who voted for this Newsom character.
If this guy was not a Politician...
April 23, 2009 - 19:12 ET by jawebster1we would know what he really thinks. He knows he, like Obama, will be given a pass by the homosexual community. As far as I know Perez Hilton will not be running for office in the near future. As long as that guy likes to change his name, may I suggest he change it to "Barajos Obama". Jim Webster
If this is "a little unfairly maligned," wonder what . . .
April 23, 2009 - 20:55 ET by CKA in Red State USA. . ."maligned" means to him?
Or what qualifies as maliciously attacked?
