Sports Illustrated Columnist Peter King Bemoans Coulter's Critique of 'Liberal Newspapers'

Perhaps it was her attack on his NBC "Football Night In America" colleague Keith Olbermann that spurred this reaction. But, for whatever reason, Sports Illustrated columnist Peter King dedicated a paragraph to conservative heroine Ann Coulter in the unlikeliest of places.

King, without citing the specific instance, aimed his attack at Coulter in his March 16 "Monday Morning QB" Sports Illustrated.com column. It made No. 10, Section b in the article headline "Ten Things I Think I Think."

"Thanks, Ann Coulter, for reveling in the decline of the liberal newspapers," King wrote. "Nice of you to be making the great money you obviously make while hard-working reporters and editors and photographers -- from liberal and conservative papers alike -- are being put on the street every day. This is a crisis without ideological fault lines, sister. And the New York Times isn't going anywhere."

The New York Times may not be going anywhere, but its stock price (NYSE:NYT) has  fallen hard in recent weeks.  It's currently trading at $4.11 a share, but only after falling to its 26-year low of $3.44 share price.

Can someone tell me the names of the conservative

papers that are going out of business? In business? And who is Peter King?

"I need more cowbell!" SNL

that was my first thought!

he's waaaaay too vague.  in addition, what in the world kind of columnist entitles his work, "10 things i think i think"?  shoot, he cannot not even decide whether or not he thinks, and he's fussing about ann coulter "reveling" in the demise of liberal newspapers!?  what a loser!

"i believe he will not stop until we are all jobless, homeless, hungry, and cold!"

Burger King!

I read his column and it's great when liberal newspapers are in major trouble.  Their point of view proves that normal people won't read it.

"Nice of you [Coulter] to

"Nice of you [Coulter] to be making the great money you obviously make while
hard-working reporters and editors and photographers -- from liberal
and conservative papers alike -- are being put on the street every day.

So he knows that Ann Coulter doesn't work hard?  How many books has she written? How many appearances and speeches does she do? How long does her research and preparation take?

Typical liberal...if someone either doesn't go to an office or a place of work, from a certain hour to a certain hour every day, or if one earns over a certain amount, that person isn't one of the "working people."

And of course, if Ann had any decency, she would give up a large chunk of her pay, in sympathy for the working folks at newspapers who are getting laid off.

Sounds like

King is fishing for a bail out. Can't compete on an even playing field.

I had a tough time

finding that information.

According to information pulled from EditorandPublisher.com only two publications are defined as 'conservative'.  According to the State of the News Media address (who knew?) which was yesterday media is not dying, merely disoriented.

katainkent - Thanks for the info. Isn't it interesting that the

two newspapers identified as conservative are both owned by Rupert Murdoch, the owner of FoxNews?

USA Today may have been identified as a centrist newspaper, but it isn't. This is what liberal Wikipedia noted:

"In May 2006, USA Today reported that the National Security Agency had been working with AT&T, Verizon, and BellSouth to compile “the largest database in the world,” according to the anonymous sources inside the agency that went public.[6] This allowed the paper to uncover a new facet of the agency and further upset the White House after the New York Times revealed the Bush administration authorized the NSA to wiretap international phone calls and e-mails traveling within the U.S.[7]

Both stories challenged the administration's ability to spy on alleged terrorists without a judge’s approval, a provision of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act established in 1978. But unlike the Times' story, the USA Today story provoked private telecommunications companies to enter the debate amid the initial developments for the next Telecommunications Act, popularly nicknamed the "net neutrality" or "equal internet access" bill.paper to help in the fight on terrorist hiding in this country."

Doesn't seem like a "centrist" paper to me.

This is a crisis without ideological fault lines

Actually Peter, it is wholly because of ideological fault lines, brother. The masses have grown sick & tired of deadtree liberal bias and ain't buyin' it no more.

However, take comfort, I'm sure there are no ideological fault lines behind the counter at McDonald's.

Amen!  They shoulda thought of that before they committed malpractice in the last election, and better yet, for the past 35 years or more.    Though I will be sad to lose my favorite rabbit cage lining - and if they come after my toilet paper, I don't know what I'll wipe with if the NY Slimes isn't available.

Hey, Peter King

You lay down with dogs and you get fleas.

I've read King's column for a few years, but King's association with the truly despicable Keith Olberman taints all of King's hardwork. Anyone who associates with the most dishonest person on tv has no credibility.

Given the current sorry state of journalism, count me in with the revelers.

obageegee: I'm kind of disappointed in the decline of Maddow. She was the only man on the job over there at msnbc. Now things go back to "Ole Cornell Keith".

Who reads Sports Illustrated?

I don't.  The only Peter King I know about is a Congressman from New York.  Does he moonlight as a sports columnist?  I may not read SI, but I sure do buy all of Ann's books and read all of her columns.  Could it be that this guy is envious of her success?  Probably.  Jim Webster

Is this going to be another

Is this going to be another sportswriter who turns wannabe "real" journalist a la Olbie?  I hope not.  One is enough.

I agree, jawebster1

The leftards are pea green with envy over Ann's success...it really sticks in their craw something fierce.

I notice the left always find the facts "annoying".

No, not facts. I love facts.

boa... She is NOT

boa...

She is NOT annoying to millions of us...that is a fact.

Sure are a lot of critters that love her Number One books...eh?

...you know, those books filled with pesky little facts the left don't like to hear/read.

Oh I know. Millions love

Oh I know. Millions love her. Millions find her annoying.

It has NOTHING to do with facts.

bal, if millions love her,

bal, if millions love her, by definition, she is not annoying them.

"She's annoying " is an opinion, not a fact.

"I find her annoying, as do many others" would be a fact.

Millions lover

Millions lover her.

AND

Millions ALSO hate her.

Happy?

"Millions love her"...

"Millions love her"... defined as a fact by the sales of her books, her appearances, etc.

"Millions hate her"... opinion. If millions don't buy her books, it doesn't follow that they hate her. Under that criteria, millions hate... well, pretty much anyone who has ever written a book. Stephen King, Nathaniel Hawthorne, H. D. Thoreau... you get the idea.

To make "millions hate her" a fact, one would need something like a petition, signed by millions. Or maybe a book-burning...

;^)

3 WORDS...

Look Jer,

Don't flatter yourself too much, when most libs want to screw the people, the regulate or tax them into submission. As for you & Ann, you better "strap it on", litterally.

Re the congressman

JAWEBSTER1...

Peter King is an OK sportswriter, he does some TV work & knows what he is talking about...as long as it is sports. He is playing right into Annie's wheelhouse, she loves this. He can gripe about Ann's writing being in lib & con papers. Who cares? They want readers, they print writers who bring them readers, whether or not they agree with them.

As for Sports Illutrated, their biggest selling issue has been the SI Swimsuit Issue for years, & I guess that says something about SI. Peter King needs to know that SI, newspapers, & porn mags are falling prey to the internet. Want to read about sports you WANT to? Go online. Want to read the news from sources anywhere on earth? Go online. Want to view the porn of your choice? Go online. It's not brain surgury, you really don't need to be that bright to understand this.

As the NYSlimes, I think it might very well go defunct. I can see it sticking around if they get a bailout, or get bought out by someone like George Soros. Other then that, the NYSlimes will be gone before I am.

Reason #346 that I

Reason #346 that I cancelled my SI subscription 15yrs ago. These guys just don't get it. It's the same reason I can't watch SportsCenter anymore either. These guys just can't keep their ignorant liberal mouths shut. All we want is sports so SHUT THE HELL UP ABOUT EVERYTHING ELSE!

You support the troops by supporting the mission! If you don't support the mission, have the guts to say you don't support the troops.

Obama: Not my President. Ever.

Arch

Canceled mine just recently for the same reason (#346). I could have saved myself a lot of money in subscriptions if I'd wised up a long time ago. The concept of sports and competition just doesn't jibe with the writers' opinions.

Not my President either

"Nice of you to
be making the great money you obviously make while hard-working reporters and
editors and photographers -- from liberal and conservative papers alike -- are
being put on the street every day. This is a crisis without ideological fault
lines, sister. And the New York Times isn't going anywhere."

Sportswriter King makes an uproariously funny statement - and
it’s not even April Fools Day yet.

Obviously, he doesn’t comprehend why his peers are losing
their jobs which started long before Coulter came on the scene.

Typical of liberals, they must find a scapegoat to justify
their failures when all they have to do is look in the mirror.

One of the biggest reasons

One of the biggest reasons the liberal newspapers/magazines are in such rapid decline is because fat pantloads like Peter King are given column inches.  The guy is hired to write an NFL column...instead, he presents self-indulgent musings on his daughter's high school lacrosse team.  Like anyone gives a crap.

"Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." -Winston Churchill

Kindly Note to Peter King

It is the management of these magazines and newspapers that are responsible for their decline, you MORON, not the hard working reporters!  Try putting forth what intelligent people want to see and read, and you can turn things around.

Ann laughs at you pathetic mewling liberals

Several FACTS:

1) Ann is always right

2) Liberals would screw their own mother to bash Bush if they could

3) The only thing stupider than a liberal is the filthy dish sponge that I threw out last week.

4) All liberal media outlets deserve to FAIL for their incessant garbage.

"To sin by silence when we should protest, makes cowards of men" -Ella Wheeler Wilcox

Pete, Annie will shove you up your own backside...

...if you're not careful.

How does she do it?

He talks like it's an accident that Coulter makes more money than him.  If a lefty or any newspaper/magazine hack wrote as well as Coulter they might make good money too.

If they had a tiny fraction

If they had a tiny fraction of the *sense of humor* she does, they might make good money as well.   She is hilarious, and they just. don't. get. it.

Geez...you're supposed to

Geez...you're supposed to have a little card in your hat that says "PRESS" and be up in the press booth with Oscar Madison typing up the highlights of the game...not making political commentary.

That's one thing I always strangely admired about these sports journalists...unless it was something like 9-11 they couldn't care less what was happening in the real world.

I guess that's over now.

One of the 34% who thinks George W. Bush was a great President. One of the 61% who wants to bring back the stock and pillory (yep...approval for Congress now at 39%...do you believe that!?).

King and Coulter

Where does this Dufus get off making these stupid claims? He infers that Ann Coulter is making a lot of money just sitting on her butt!

"Nice of you to be making the great money you obviously make while hard-working reporters and editors and photographers -- from liberal and conservative papers alike -- are being put on the street every day. This is a crisis without ideological fault lines, sister. And the New York Times isn't going anywhere."

I guess this guy doesn't have a clue about the research and fact finding that Ann puts into her books. Hes so used to hanging around these mind numbed, drug using, woman abusing idiots in sports, that he feels anyone with money is in the same league!

Here something to chew on , Peter! Ann Coulter works just as hard if not harder and is one hundred times as smart as any of your sport superstars!

For those of you who didn't

For those of you who didn't follow the whole Brett Favre retirement saga last year, Peter King completely disgraced himself by slobbering ALL OVER Brett...he seriously wants to have the guy's baby or something.  He has continued to be ridiculed mercilessly for his sycophancy to Favre in the blogosphere...lost all credibility (he also ADORES Peyton Manning)...him adding in ignorant and stupid leftist tidbits into his columns is nothing new...but it's what got me to stop reading them a year ago!

But aren't you going to

But aren't you going to miss his oh-so-interesting reflections on his daughter's Title IX synchronized swimming scholarship?

The Rocky Mountain Collegian: Illustrating Idiocy

Sports in news

First a couple of things about the comment Peter King made:
1) He didn't attack Coulter from the standpoint of politics
2) He openly admitted the media is liberal - Kudos

While his articles are rambling at time and he seems to stretch for the 9-10th thing he thinks he is pretty good. In a vocation that has spent the last few decades defending 'instantly wealthy adolescents', 'washed up loud mouths' and other such giant egos while telling the audience "this is what you want to hear" Peter King has for the most part been less supportive of the criers of the game today and more focused on sports.

A person may be won over with logic and reason but the masses must be bought with spectacle and platitudes. - 2008 Elections
