President Barack Obama wants congressional Republicans to stop listening to Rush Limbaugh. MSNBC's chief Washington correspondent Norah O'Donnell even asked one congressman to take it a step further.
In an interview with House Republican Conference Chairman Rep. Mike Pence, Ind., which aired on MSNBC Jan. 28, O'Donnell referenced the well-known radio host and asked if Pence agreed with him. O'Donnell quoted Limbaugh as saying, "We have to hope Obama succeeds, that we have to bend over, grab the ankles, bend over forward, backward whichever because his father was black, because this is the first black president."
Instead of echoing Obama's response to Limbaugh and urging Pence to ignore the talk show host, O'Donnell asked Pence to denounce the talk radio king.
"No doubt, you can agree with Rush Limbaugh about that he is calling this stimulus package essentially a sham what's going on, that it's just too full of wasteful spending. But on that specific thing - that we have to bend over because this is the first black president - why don't you feel like you could denounce something like that?" O'Donnell asked.
She questioned the validity of Limbaugh's remark at a time "when America's trying to come together."
"Are you so beholden to someone like Rush Limbaugh that you can't say that that's not the type of rhetoric, when America's trying to come together and do something for the unemployment rate in your state of Indiana - now 8.2 percent - is that the type of rhetoric we need?" O'Donnell asked.
Pence fired back, explaining Limbaugh's comments, and suggested O'Donnell reconsider the premise of her question if she meant to imply that Limbaugh was racist.
"Well look Norah, I don't believe Rush Limbaugh got a racist bone in his body and if you're suggesting that his statement had a racist element to it, I - I would commend you to a, a greater understanding of the positions that he's taken," Pence replied. "He's a man that's about opportunity for all Americans, regardless of race, creed or color. And I think that's why he's so admired and appreciated all across America.
The Indiana congressman told O'Donnell Limbaugh's intent was to stem the tide of "taking America in a new direction," which is now happening with the stimulus bill.
"But look you know, on this stimulus bill, I appreciate Rush's voice out there," Pence continued. "Nancy Pelosi just said on the House floor, and I respect her greatly, she said after defending all the different spending programs in this bill - $136 billion in program spending, she said quote, ‘We are taking America in a new direction.'"
"Norah, I thought we were trying to pass a stimulus bill that in the short-term was temporary and fast-acting and would create jobs in America," Pence said.

January 30, 2009 - 02:48 ET by thebutlerdiditWhile I think it was pretty dumb for the CEO to be ordering a jet right before asking for a bail-out, it isn't going to work for the government to tell them who can be compensated and how, or how they spend the money they get, like for advertising, etc. If the government wanted to dictate exactly how the money was to be spent, or any money in the future, it should be written out clearly, and then if they don't spend correctly, tough, no more help. The banks know they are needed, so of course they are going to push the envelope. This is what happens when you give bailouts or make stimulus packages in a hurry, without taking time and planning how it will all work. Just like how Paulson screwed us, by telling Bush, we have to do this right now, no ifs ands or buts, and so they just ended up throwing money at the problem, with no real oversite or plan, IMHO.

This:
No doubt Obama will indeed get beaten up on Fox News. But his failure to get even the squishiest moderate Republican - including the 11 entertained in the White House by Rahm Emanuel last night - to back him is not merely a big score for Rep Eric Cantor, Republican Whip, and the rest of the GOP leadership.
It also shows that it is not just Fox, the loony Right or Rush Limbaugh ...[ ]... who had grave misgivings about the content of the bill.
and this:
Obama said yesterday he did not feel he had ownership of the bill. Be that as it may, if it goes through the Senate in similar fashion and is signed into law then - the efforts of Pelosio and Senator Harry Reid notwithstanding - it will be his and his alone.

January 30, 2009 - 01:20 ET by NorthCoasterRep. Gingrey was only pointing out that pundits can say what they want at will, without having to deal with the ramifications of their positions. This is the same twisting of comments that is getting used on Rush to make him look like he is against President Obama when he only wants the socialist agenda to fail.

He wrote me back a very nice e-mail, yesterday, BTW. I thought he did fine on Matthews, he was on with that congressman from FLA, the Dem with white hair, don't remember his name. Rush is only responding to all the MSM implied ideas that obama is more capable because he is black. The only thing that is significant is that the country voted in a Black President. Beyond that Blackness doesn't do anything for obama except for the bedazzled true believers who thinks his skin color gives him special powers.
As an anecdote, I have a lady friend I did some work for a couple months ago who works all different hours retail. To turn this around. If I were a socialist, I would have been furious if my comrades in congress had voted against this utopian bill.
We don't do what Rush says. He just happens to say what we want done. Our representatives should do what we want done.

January 30, 2009 - 20:26 ET by JerAre you implying that it should be the voters who act as sheep, and not their elected representatives?
My position is that neither the voters nor their elected representatives should act as sheep, and, in the current climate generally and regarding the stimulus legislation in particular, while the prevailing view on the right may have been that Republican congressmen shouldn't behave as sheep and meekly fall in line behind a Democratic crafted bill, from my perspective it seemed the real sheep herding was being conducted by General Limbaugh. It was he, after all, who was implicitly threatening those who strayed from his flock with banishment.
Consequently, it appeared to me that despite Obama's efforts at genuinely inviting co-operative participation, the House Republicans ultimately caved in to Limbaugh and not a single one of them voted in favor of the bill. Rep. Phil Gingrey is a prime example. The day after gently chiding Limbaugh for excessive partisanship, he felt it necessary to call him and beg for forgiveness.
Anyway, that's my opinion. I'm sure it differs from that of 99% of my fellow NewsBusters.

As he should have.
January 31, 2009 - 00:32 ET by KarmaHi Jer,
If he was an elected representaive, Rush should keep his mouth shut. As one of us, the voters who (should) dictate how this country is run, he should be required to tell the representatives, who supposedly reflect our/his views, what we expect of them. I would expect nothing less of Maddow, Olberman, Matthews (my God, you can't seriously expect me to list them all) in telling their socialist representatives what their wishes are. Sheep/shepherd are poor examples of what the relationship is, in my view. It's more like owner/manager. The voters own the business; the elected only manage. The paramount problem, as I see it, is we have only one business with basically two owners who want the company managed in different fashions. Gridlock (which I like) and/or large swings from one ideology to the other is the result. The socialists, for the most part, want the entire business to run by their rules. Speaking for conservatives like myself, I see a more efficient and peaceful result if we break up the monopoly and establish 50 or so smaller companies. A common defense along with possibly other issues would be nice, but we could work that out. A variety on the menu of governance would undoubtedly please more palates.
I see that I'm getting slightly off topic here so, more to the point:
Our managers should be herded by us, the voters, which includes Rush. The managers are not his flock. They are his subordinates.
Cooperation with Obama, no matter how inviting he may be, is impossible. Couldn't you see the same thing in regards to Bush and the left? House Republicans did not cave in to Rush or anyone else. They voted how their constituents wanted them to. As far as Gingrey begging forgiveness. More of our elected officials, on both sides, should be doing this.
Thanks for the reply, but I still want a divorce. Irreconcilable differences. Let's work together to amicably divide this country so more may enjoy it and prosper in their own way.
No representation, without taxation!

The most amazing political distortion in history
January 28, 2009 - 23:02 ET by Lord ErondWhy isn't anyone calling out the MSM about their misquoting Limbaugh? Did they? The whole context of his "I hope he fails" line with Hannity was simply that where Rush said that if Obama's policies are socialist then I HOPE HE FAILS. There's a qualifier in there that just about every jackass, on the rag MSM person like Nora keeps forgetting to include.
I also hear that MSNBC and CNN are looking for new newspeople. Prior qualifications include that you must have worked for TASS or the PRAVDA or XINHUA news agency and that you possess a shrill, screechy voice and a limited cranial capacity devoid of reason or independent thought.

Because Rush could have
January 28, 2009 - 23:21 ET by JerBecause Rush could have easily included that qualifier in his self-authored, self-described headline which he begged the media to print. He chose not to include any qualifier. Instead, he prejudged the tenor and direction of this administration by claiming he already knows Obama--who he is and what he is--and hopes he fails. That was Limbaugh's four-word summation of his own message, and, in my view, sent the wrong message at the wrong time.

PMSNBC's Andrea Mitchell
January 28, 2009 - 23:21 ET by Rush FanPMSNBC's Andrea Mitchell interviewed Republican Congressman Eric Cantor today, supposedly to discuss the stimulus plan. But she also made numerous attempts to get Congressman Cantor to denounce Rush Limbaugh. Each time she brought up Rush's name, Congressman Cantor was sharp enough to turn the conversation back to all the pork in the "stimulus plan".
Later this morning Congressman Cantor called in to Rush's show to discuss all the pork in what Rush calls the Obama Porkulus Bill.

Please turn the tables on these "reporters" - CONSISTENTLY
January 28, 2009 - 23:56 ET by krendlerI really wish more Republicans would turn the tables on these clowns at MS-NBC during interviews and say something like "Well, Norah, Rush has his audience, just as The Daily Kos, Air America and MS-NBC have theirs."
That really pisses these pretend journalists off when you call them out on their bias DIRECTLY, in their faces, on live TV (Example: Joe the Plumber doing this to John Roberts on CNN, with Roberts immediately losing his composure and flying off the handle. Palin did it too at the convention, which is one of the reasons she's so despised by the MSM. And Giuliani and Fred Thompson are the masters).

To me, the most troubling
January 29, 2009 - 10:53 ET by fitzfongTo me, the most troubling part of the interview is when Pence claimed to respect Nancy Pelosi greatly. What's to respect?

January 30, 2009 - 02:23 ET by thebutlerdiditI agree, I would have rather, if he had to say anything, that he said I respect that Ms. Pelosi has her view, or something to that affect. I guess he was trying to be classy, when our little guy Gingrey was on Hardball with his fellow congressman on the left, he was sooo nice and polite. But, to be fair, so was the other guy. Sorry, but I don't remember the other guy's name. I keep reading Jer's comments up there. I wonder if he thinks the Republicans or even the moderate Democrats, really should have signed on to the porkulus when it had millions of dollars for something to do with Honeybees???? Or maybe he likes those totally rad dirt bike trails? Or the waterparks slides?

Norah O'Donnell: Liberal Advocate for Censorship!
January 29, 2009 - 11:58 ET by RogerCfromSDWhat the charming twit Norah doesn't realize is that by attempting to silence Rush, she and her comrades are attempting to silence those of use who listen to him and get to speak our opinions through his show.
