Dobbs vs. Kudlow: CNN Host Trashes Rival's Presence at Obama Dinner

"CNBC Reports" host Larry Kudlow believes free-market capitalism is the best path to prosperity. Too bad CNN "Lou Dobbs Tonight" host Lou Dobbs doesn't.

Dobbs attacked Kudlow during the Jan. 14 broadcast of "Lou Dobbs Tonight" for commenting on a dinner meeting of conservative pundits at the home of Washington Post columnist George Will on Jan. 13. Kudlow was not included in person or by phone to respond to Dobbs' criticism.

"This is Larry Kudlow - one of the folks invited to a conservative fest with the president-elect last night," Dobbs said. "I'd like to just share, everybody - what a Larry Kudlow-conservative person does after meeting with the president-elect."

Dobbs cited a few lines from Kudlow's appearance on CNBC's Jan. 14 "The Call" - "He is charming, he is terribly smart, bright, well informed. He has a great sense of humor." Then Dobbs skipped moments in Kudlow's exchange with "The Call" co-host Melissa Francis and added - "He's so well informed and he loves to deal with both sides of an issue."

But Dobbs left out a substantial portion of Kudlow's Jan. 14 "The Call" comments, cherry picking the most flowery portions. Dobbs also didn't mention Kudlow's past criticisms of Obama.

During special CNBC coverage on Election Night 2008, Kudlow warned that Obama's victory didn't give the president-elect license to attack business or over-regulate.

Nevertheless, Dobbs attempted to discredit Kudlow's assessment of Obama by going back over two years to something he wrote that approved of President George W. Bush's handling of the economy - back when the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) was steady within the 11,000-point range.

"Let's contrast this if we may with Kudlow's constant praise of President Bush on his Money and Politics blog [Kudlow's Money Politic$] in 2006 commenting on a major economic speech," Dobbs said.

Once again - Dobbs parsed Kudlow's words from his May 3, 2006 post: "He's hot ... He's framing the debate ... Bush was positive, optimistic and confident," Dobbs said.

In that speech, Kudlow praised for supporting tax cuts, appealing to the entire spectrum of the economy and remaining optimistic at a time when political opponents were browbeating the current economic climate with a mid-term congressional election looming.

Despite that, Dobbs said, "The ideological tension there is just overwhelming."

If Dobbs or his staff had looked at something more recent than May 2006 from Kudlow - and as a CNBC host and a columnist and blogger for National Review, there is plenty of it - Dobbs might have discovered Kudlow doesn't blindly follow Bush.

On CNBC's Dec. 19, 2008 "The Call," Kudlow was very hard on Bush for his administration's willingness to bailout the Big Three automakers. "And I regret to say this to Mr. Bush and Mr. Paulson, you blew it because you didn't protect the taxpayers and you're not protecting the long-run health, either of the American car business, which needs this radical restructuring or the American economy."

Dobbs' so-called political analysts followed his lead and piled on. Democratic strategist Robert Zimmerman took a real cheap shot at Kudlow - suggesting his only pertinent role would be as the hired help.

"Unless Kudlow was there as a caterer, I can't imagine what the rationale was to have him at that dinner," Zimmerman said.

Dobbs then asked if Peggy Noonan, Paul Gigot, David Brooks and Bill Kristol belonged at such a "conservative fest," and Zimmerman approved of their presence at George Will's off-the-record conservative pundit/Obama dinner.

"I can see them being there because there's some, there's intellectual integrity," Zimmerman continued.

Ed Rollins, the former chairman of Gov. Mike Huckabee's failed bid for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination, also criticized Kudlow for speaking out about the meeting on CNBC.

"The interesting thing was this was supposed to be a confidential dinner," Rollins said. "That was the president[-elect]'s rules and Larry Kudlow walks out and goes on TV this morning and blabs it."

But it's not like Rollins is known for keeping his mouth shut. Amanda Carpenter of Townhall.com reported on Rollins' outbursts at an Iowa restaurant on Jan. 3, 2008, where he made personal attacks against Mitt Romney, Rudy Giuliani and Fred Thompson and shared his affections for NBC correspondent Andrea Mitchell and Dobbs with the entire restaurant.

It is worth noting that CNN's Dobbs and CNBC's Kudlow are competitors. Their shows air during the same time slot - at 7 p.m. Eastern on weeknights. Kudlow has been critical of Dobbs over the years for his protectionist stances and had made this observation of the evolution of Dobbs - to the modern-day independent he claims to be - after he appeared on Comedy Central's "Colbert Report."

"So anyway, there's Lou Dobbs, a friend of mine, who in a very short period of time has covered the entire political spectrum by moving from a conservative, corporate business softy, a free trader, to a hard-line, left-wing, business-bashing, immigrant-hating trade protectionist, even though in my judgment the facts don't support his newly found philosophy," Kudlow said on the Jan. 25, 2007 broadcast of CNBC's "Kudlow & Company."

Ed Rollins sounds painfully

Ed Rollins sounds painfully jealous. In fact so did Mr. Dobbs.

Rollins shouldn't be allowed on TV

I like Larry Kudlow.  He is a very, very smart guy.

But he sounded like a total sychophant about Obama.  He sounded like the rest of the groupies in the MSM.

I guess what we can really tell about that secret meeting is that nobody challenged The Messiah and/or The Messiah didn't bother to tell the people there how much he disagrees with them but instead just gave them the okey-doke and let them go on thinking that there was some possibility that Obama wasn't a true socialist.

Go back to Saul Alinsky - find places where you can get agreement with your opponents to further your goals.  Obama just wants to scope you out so he can find places where he can get YOU to agree with HIM.  You'd like it to be a two-way street but it ain't.

Has anyone elase noticed

Has anyone elase noticed the trend amongst the DC Based conservatives to chuck everything and RUN as fast as they can away from a fight since September?

It disturbs me, because those self appointed "Keepers of Conservativism" like George Will, Peggy Noonan, etc have been suffering what US troops in the first weeks of the Korean Conflict called "Bug-out fever."  They can be stampeded at the mere HINT of a fight with a liberal like Obama.

I fear it is worst amongst those who have made their lives atttending the evening salons of Georgetown where the invitiation to attend is everything, sticking to ones views is secondary.

I was distressed to note that Charles Krauthammer attended the recent dinner with Obama at George Wills home which will not come to a positive end.  Krauthammer, one of the smartest analysts I have listened to surely must realize that endless retreating from the fight which is what is happening now will not end well for conservatism.  I prefer to think he attended against his will.

We have not seen a single conservative politician say anything that will endanger their slot on the dinner salon circuit even though low hanging fruit has been hung ot for them to counter attack on.  Rangel as taxwriter?????   Holder at Justice??????  Panetta at CIA?  Good GOD, if they will not fight this, when are they gonna counterattack!!!!!!

Sadly, I think we will need an entire new crop of conservative politicians/activists/thinkers to take on this new fight with Obama and carry out the flanking attack on our enemy much like Inchon.  After all, clearly we cannot seem to count on Will, Noonan, Bill Kristol et al to stand, fix bayonets, and fight the good fight when their dinner ticket is endangered.

Dobbs

Lou Dobbs is an idiot, -CNN's knockoff of Bill O'Reilly. His soak-the-rich, government-is-the-solution, profits-and-CEOs-are-evil style of mob populism is no different than BO's. He fancies himself an independent, but he is a brainless populist.

PS Also the worst combover on the tube. No wait, there's Jeff Birnbaum; a tossup.

Lou Dobbs lookin' for news

Lou Dobbs lookin' for news in all the wrong places. Hey, that could be a song.

"Forget change, I want improvement!"

What Were They Thinking?

Did this merry band of inside-the-Beltway "conservative intelligentsia" that attended Will's dinner really expect BHO to be anything other than charming?  Did they really expect him to be confrontational?  Of course not.

But did they expect BHO to listen to their philosophy and change his own?  Maybe this limp-wristed crew was egotistical enough to think he might . . .  in the least egotistical enough to think their Beltway social network will think they might have some influence.

BHO's strategies here are pretty obvious.  1) get America thinking he's open to all ideas.  2) get Americans thinking that this group of Beltway insiders represent true conservatism.  3) get a pass on some of his dicier plans.  We'll see how well he succeeds.  After all he has MSM on his side.  Let's be grateful for talk radio and the blogosphere.

Our bud Chris asked...

Our friend Chris Matthews asked rhetorically (or was Pat B supposed to answer, you never know)--how long after being in The One's presence will the effect wear off and these people be "able" to say something negative? OK, Chris--how long...We know you didn't go to dinner, but will you EVER be able to be objective or even analytical about this guy?

Don't believe a thing the next few years!

"He's so well informed and he loves to deal with both sides of an issue."

Is this the same Obama who NEVER went across the aisle, NEVER built a consensus but was the undisputed #1 liberal in congress?

Its time to stop putting ANY faith in the media...ANY...2009 will show us all...its gonna be Oz, its gonna be CYA...its gonna be hard to take because the whole truth and historical reality will not be in the equation!

Now you have said it all

Now you have said it all reelman...summed it up perfectly!

"You've gone beyond the law"... Sen. Kerry~ Head of Foreign Relations Committee to Hillary at Sec.of State confirmation hearings~1-13-09

Yup--him

That would also be the senator who spent so little time in the Senate or learning its ways that he thinks he can pass his so-called stimulus thing with 80 votes. Let's watch and see.

Once again--

Once again-- I get very confused. I come here to NB to feel good that I am with a number of conservatives, (and a few tinhat libs) and I read blogs like this and get even more confused.

Other than Glenn Beck, what other news show defends the nmiddle class/ WAre you all in favor of open borders and illegal immigration?? Do you dislike someone who chastises government for poor performance?/ Is it Dobbs' abrasive personality that makes you attack him?? I am not looking to argue. I am truly and sincerely puzzled.

Do you prefer Kolbermann to Dobbs?? Couric, Wiiliams , Gibson?? Who-- who else can you name that defends America's middle class? Hume has stood down. Hannity is still here

Come on everybody tell me why you put Dobbs down??

I really am puzzled. The only answer I can come up with on my own doesn't satisfy me. I remain puzzled.

PS About a year ago- I asked a similar question-never got an answer.

Hey misterb...I've

Hey misterb...

I've defended/supported Dobbs when it comes to illegal immigration for a long time now, he and BOR are a lot alike for me, I agree with half of their views, the other half I don't.

I've watched Dobbs for years now, before he ever got this spot on CNN...used to listen to his show on the CNN Business channels ect.

Anyway...I've answered you...great to see you by the way.

BT

Why am I not surprised that you are the only one to answer???

At any rate==I just got back from the gym and checked, nit expecting many answers. There are only a few in the media who stand with us and angry white dudes, and anti-illegals and war on the middle class, etc. It is the same attitude that gavve us McCain as our candidate.

I guess I won't make friends here but we conservatives cannot keep shooting the few friends in the media that we have.

PS Thanks for the response.

Fun time--Didja ever wonder how bad off we would have been if we backed Ron Paul??? Very few of us did. I didn't. Now in retrospect, in terms of being an American for Americans, I think he was a far better  candidate than the two that survived. Too bad he attracted so many looney tunes.

misterbill,I have a

misterbill,

I have a like/dislike thing with Dobbs. Like O'Reilly, he's conservative on some questions, but overall, he's a Populist who, despite his traditional views on many issues, still demands and trusts the federal government to solve all our problems. Plus, he almost cartoonishly overdoes his bashing of business, in contrast to his former life as a bland reporter of Wall Street. I always distrusted his 'conversion" to "Populism" and a defender of the "working class" as a ratings ploy. Plus, he's on CNN and most of his guests are from their usual pool of second string analysts.  He's one of those guys who, just when you think you like him, he takes the liberal side, and just when you've about written him off, he says something that makes sense. I suppose that, on CNN, he's about the best we can expect. Know what I mean?

The "Mainstream" Media: By liberals. For liberals.

Chris--

Chris-

Thank you--your answer makes a lot of sense. I am a fan, but it's because Dobbs is one of the few who are conservative. I get peeved and tune out, (mentally), when he goes into what I guess can be described as a tantrum about the failure of government. While I agree with his point (usually), I don't agree with the lengths he goes to, which does indeed, show the difference between who he is and who he was.

I just feel he is one of the few that is on our side, (most of the time), and he does hold the MSMs feet to the fire for their unfair treatment of the issues. (I don't like the session wheer he has the three personalities discussing the issues.)

Until I become a TV commentator, we are stuck with him.

(I plan to enter the field on my 80th birthday.)

Obama Propaganda Campaign

The "Obama Propaganda Campaign" is underway, to cut the center out of the conservatives and The Republican Party. The whole point is to marginalize strong conservatives by playing up to the centrists. Watch for Senator John McCain to do his Senatorial best to support Obama starting next week.

Larry Kudlow - big WET kiss to obama

Larry Kudlow gave a big WET kiss to obama

Not once did he mention the criminal acts this man been involved with nor the criminals he surrounds himself with.

I do remember Larry Kudlow wanting to give amnesty to the 20 million illegals and allowing the other 80 million that would have been allowed in under the plan. 100 million would mean the end of the United States.

He is not a conservative. In name only.

Mean Mr Mustard

Kudlow is one of the most articulate and ardent defenders of what I consider to be the very heart and soul of conservatism -- the free market.  And for Lou Dobbs, who I dont watch and at this point dont plan to, to doubt or misunderstand this, reflects very poorly on his character.
