It's special treatment for automakers, according to a former airline executive.
Gordon Bethune, the former CEO of Continental Airlines (NYSE:CAL), now a CNBC contributor, told CNBC's "Squawk Box" on Dec. 19 the political process is being substituted for what otherwise should be a bankruptcy judge in determining the fate of the big three automakers.
"Wow, what makes them exempt from reality? What are the bankruptcy laws invented for?" Bethune asked. "I mean - if it works in airlines, works in steel - what's the matter with these guys? Why not have a judge decide instead of the political process? And, you know - you get some fairness in the federal court, so there's no excuse for this whole debacle I don't think."
Bethune is famous for saving a beleaguered Continental Airlines from near liquidation after it had filed for bankruptcy several times, giving him a different perspective on how to turnaround a failing corporation.
"The status quo is preferable to an unknown future and what a federal judge may kind of slice and dice you up to," Bethune said. "Here's - you know they got competitors, like a horse race, right? These guys got a 300-pound jockey on their butt. I don't care how good of a car they make, that's too damn heavy of a jockey. They got to clean it up and the only place they can do it fairly is in the courts."
President Bush has gone forward with $17.4 billion in loans for auto companies, but Bethune says the bailout won't work because of the political interests involved.
"[It's] too political," Bethune said. "You can't do it because there is too many constituents that have a vested interest in the outcome. Let a federal judge cut it up on what makes these guys competitive again."
Bethune told "Squawk Box" the strong will ultimately survive. He pointed to Toyota (NYSE:TM), which just posted its first-ever operating loss in its history.
"The good ones will be there," Bethune said. "Toyota may be taking a hit today, but they're going to be back because they have good products and a good company and ultimately, we're going to buy a car again. So, maybe you don't have the confidence to buy a car today, but you're going to buy a car sometime. Which one are you going to buy?"

Maybe that question should be directed to North West Airlines. You know, the company that received a 761 MILLION dollar "financing package" from the State of Minnesota in 1992. I'm sure that they have a reasonable explanation.

The other reason this
December 19, 2008 - 14:52 ET by bobthemanThe other reason this is not going to work is because the cars are not selling in the dealerships. You can throw the whole kitchen sink at this thing and it's not going to work without a solid revenue stream.
The basic concepts of business 101 seem to be missingin action. I haven't heard one single politician or car exec speak about the lack of sales. Mark my words... this package will fail.
As sad as it is... these guys NEED to go bankrupt in order to survive. It will force renegotiation with the unions and force a new business model.

I agree. You can not
December 19, 2008 - 15:09 ET by UtherpendI agree. You can not continue to produce cars that 50% of the country can not afford and then wonder why your sales are tanking. I seriously believe that 30% of Fords sales are by their own employees who get major discounts and financing deals through the unions. My brother in law was able to buy a new car every three years due to the fact that he was a Ford Employee. Now he buys used toyota's since he took thier buy out two years ago.

December 19, 2008 - 15:35 ET by Roscoe MendagoReality is the UAW---
Reality is the Levin brothers, Grandholm and all those enablers that have sold out to the unions. Michigan is as corrupt as Illinois.
A lost thought--
Wasn't it Carl Levin who insisted that the Michigan primary be pushed up to give his state a more prominent standing in the process but led to the mess of the citizens votes not counting. It all worked out in the end, but I never heard any reference to Levin's involvement.

Now the problem here is
December 19, 2008 - 16:27 ET by dscottNow the problem here is that this guy as a CEO of an airline was willing to lose his vested interest in the outstanding stock shares he was paid in, in order to save the company. In other words he put his job and his fellow workers ahead of his own personal financial interest. Contrast this with the big 3 asking for the bail outs, a bankruptcy will not stop people from buying cars no more than it did people from buying airline tickets. What chapter 11 bankruptcy will do however, is drive their outstanding stock shares to zero. That means the management, the UAW and the retirees whose pension fund (remember Enron) was invested in those stock shares loose most if not all of their investments. The bailout is plain and simple Quid Pro Quo from the politicians who were the beneficiaries of the big 3 management and UAW campaign contributions, ALL at the EXPENSE OF THE TAXPAYER.
Quite frankly, the taxpayers of this country have been defrauded in one of the biggest financial scams in human history to save the personal interests of campaign contributors starting with the AIG bailout. This is outright fraud committed by government officials and made legal through legislative fiat. All legitimacy of self governance has been co-opted by a group of self serving elitists.

“A democracy cannot exist
December 19, 2008 - 16:47 ET by dscott“A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largess from the public treasury.
From that time on the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury, with the results that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship.” - Lord Woodhouselee
We may be witnessing the end of our Republic, we are on the slippery path to destruction perpetrated by the greed of the slick talking politicians and special interests who are regularly fed at the trough of corrupt government condoned by the ignorance of a naively deceived public who believed every rationalization why they should be shorn like sheep.

December 20, 2008 - 14:04 ET by klchadwickMy father is an airline pilot and his company also filed Chapter 11...an re-emerged much stronger than before! By doing so, the airline was able to renegotiate with unions including the Airline Pilot's Association (ALPA). While my father makes less than he did before, at least he isn't constantly worried about losing his job as he was before. A job that he has held for 35yrs at that!
EXACTLY THE POINT!
January 21, 2009 - 17:40 ET by Defector01By completely preventing companies like the big 3 as well as some banks and whatnot from feeling the pain of their bad decisions, they've turned nearly every company in the country into a beggar and completely subverted the rules of economics/capitalism.
