RNC, DNC Chairs Clash Over Whether Media Aided Obama in Election

It might be a moot point for this last election, but the media played a role in it. Just who it helped was a point of contention for Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean and Republican National Committee Chairman Mike Duncan.

Both chairs were asked if the news coverage gave President-elect Barack Obama an added advantage in this election at a luncheon at the National Press Club Nov. 5. Dean said he didn't think it did, which was met with grumbles from the audience. He claimed the media had an impact, but it was offset on both sides and he specifically cited the media "obsession" over Obama's association with Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

"Well, I wouldn't have thought so," Dean said. "I wouldn't have thought so. You know, I don't think we need to go over the specific obsessions that went on, but there was a fair amount of obsession with guilt by association tactics, so I'm sure Mike will have a different take on this stuff. But when preachers are put on for hours at a time by the cable networks who have no bearing on what the beliefs of Senator were at all at the time - I don't think he got particularly favorable - I'm not complaining about it because all's fair in politics, but I'd say it was pretty even."

Duncan took a different tact. He said if you did an analysis of pro-Obama, pro-McCain, anti-Obama and anti-McCain stories - you would find a troubling trend.

"Just as you questioned about the Republican Party going through a soul-searching and an evaluation, I suggest that the press do the same thing," Duncan said. "And I think the numbers will tell you the answer. I'm not here to criticize the press today, that's not my role. But objectively, look at your numbers and look the motive words and look at air time and network coverage and those kinds of things, and come to your own conclusion on that."

Duncan dodged offering specific examples, but did name a specific offender - The New York Times. He questioned the selection of some of the stories and photographs the newspaper chose to run throughout the election cycle.

"Again, that's not my intended role as national party chairman, is to criticize the press, but I think if you look at the amount of time given on nightly network news to the two candidates, and whether they were positive or negative stories, that you'll come to the conclusion that there was an advantage for Barack Obama," Duncan said. "I think if you take the major newspapers in this country, particularly the New York Times and look at some of the articles or look at some of the pictures that were run in the magazine section of the articles, that you will come to the conclusion that - that there is - there is a leaning toward one candidate in this campaign."

According to the GOP chairman, it's important for the media to evaluate their political leaning as circulation is declining for newspaper and TV news is more and more segmented.

"Now, that's something that as an industry that you've got to look at," Duncan added. "I mean, you've got declining newspaper circulation all over the country. You've got a fragmentation of the national networks now with all the different alternatives that are out there. That's something as an industry that the media has got to look at. I believe in the First Amendment. I believe that you have - that you have rights to say - but we also have the same rights to say what we feel."

Later in the program, Dean revealed the Democratic National Committee had been using a tactic involving the use of credit card data to predict voting behavior with 85 percent accuracy.

Funny, we learned more about

Funny, we learned more about Joe the Plumbers background from the MSM than we ever did about Obama's.

And they say

They are fair ... how in the hell does any critical analysis support that. I've got that tingle again.

It Doesn't...

It is ludicrous to suggest otherwise.  Wrote about it today on my USA Conservative blog.  I've had some good feedback to this one.

MSM = PR firm for the Democrat Party

Obession with Rev. Wright?

Obession with Rev. Wright? Please. They spent more time attacking Palin's wardrobe than they ever did with Wright. And when they did focus on him it was only to brush him off.

Hell yes, the press ran

Hell yes, the press ran interference for the Obama campaign.

Reverend Wright?  They claimed he had no effect on Obamas character, which leads us to question their sanity as well as reading capability since Obama in his own book said he was an influence.

Over the past ten years two groups have become stylish in America. Those being African-Americans and Gays.  The press will rally to any individual of either of these groups whenever they are in trouble far more than any "uncool group" such as a soldier or lacrosse player from a south-eastern college.

THis is not debateable, it is like saying gravity exists.

Doesn't matter now

Duncan dodged offering

Duncan dodged offering specific examples...

Mike Duncan is an incompetent boob. He may as well have been the Invisible Man throughout this entire process.

Hopefully, the repubs will get their act together and run the Duncans out of the party.

I won't, however, hold my breath waiting.

Resist the Obamafuhrer.

Is THAT who the RNC Chair is???

Duncan disappears until today. What a L-O-S-E-R.

Change is needed int he RNC and it begins at the top.

GNY... ...Yep! "America

GNY...

...Yep!

"America isn't the problem...America is the solution." ~ Rush Limbaugh

We need a new Duncan to head the RNC

Duncan Hunter.

Maybe Fred Thompson.

We need a person who can think strategically, and someone who first and foremost, is NOT a RINO.

1)  Change the primaries.

2)  Concentrate on unseating the uneseemly dem's....for crying out loud, in Palm Beach, Florida, Rob Wexler (D-Md) was re-elected with a huge majority.  He should have been ripe for the picking.

3)  Get back to the basics.  Bring in Rudy as the (R) equivalent of Att'y General.  Let him holler loud and long about democrat malfeasance (ACORN, Cold Cash Jefferson, etc).

4) Organize (or re-organize) the base.  We stopped the fools on amnesty, and made our voices heard on the bail-out nonsense.  Continue and expand the effort, on each and every bone-headed move this democrat Congress, under the leadership of Nanny, tries to shove down our throats.

Time to grow up politically.  We are not dem-lite.  We are conservatives.  Time to start acting like it.

P.S.  Leave Barack alone for a while.....given the time and space, he'll tie himself in knots all by himself.  He over-promised, he'll under-deliver.  He doesn't need our help at all to fail, and fail spectacularly.   We don't need to aid and abet in his downfall.  All we need to do is stand back and say "I told you so".

Thompson for RNC chair.

Thompson for RNC chair. Would love to see him logically dismember Dean in some of those side by side sunday morning shows.

Duncan?  who was he?  What did he do.

Mitt Romney

I would select Mitt Romney for a few reasons:

1. Disciplined and polished

2. Understands conservative principals

3. Knows how to win in blue states

4. Can make Howard look like the village idiot on any given occasion.

5. Is a financial and business wizard.

6. would not have left the ammon on the table if he were a candidate and would not let the GOP do the same.

Obama did not win because the country went right. Obama won because he had the most extraordinary marketing campaign in history. The McCain campaign like all other political campaigns are using marketing strategies that are 30 years old. Obama's campaign was the first to use strategies that are used to develop new brands. Even with the right candidate, the GOP will continue to decline unless it evolves into 21st century marketing.

J, I agree.

I think either of those choices would be a huge improvement over the lackluster leadership the party currently has.

I've heard Newt's name being kicked around, too, but I think hat would be a distraction.

Did this country just elect Obama/Biden, or was it Soros/Ayers?

Duncan: "Again, that's not

Duncan: "Again, that's not my intended role as national party chairman, is to criticize the press.."

Why not? This is the kind of thinking that has made the GOP the national doormat.

Using credit card data to predict voting behavior? And the Dems say they're concerned with personal privacy.

Congratulations

Congratulations to MSNBC, CNN, ABC/CBS/NBC, The NYTimes, Time, Newsweek, Rolling Stone and the rest of the MSM on a well fought campaign.

Oh, and Barry too.

Now comes the easy part

Now comes the easy part. We can all be critics. It is so easy to complain that Bush hasn't caught bin Laden, when the job isn't in your hands. Now we get to criticize and use 20/20 hindsight.

"To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public." - Theodore Roosevelt

So your point is, learn

So your point is, learn nothing from the failure, so as not to change anything next time? And just who here blamed the loss on the Bush Administration's failure to capture bin Laden?

MSM's obsession with Rev. Wright??

..he [Dean] specifically cited the media "obsession" over Obama's association with Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

The media had no obsession over the Wright/Obama association. They did their damn best to keep it out of the mainstream press. At some juncture when, because of Fox's coverage and pressure from the public and political pundits, the MSM was caught in a bind. They mostly were uncomfortable with what they were seeing, and had no choice but to put enough, and carefully put it out, coverage out - but it seemed that all they really wanted was for Obama to figure out how to get the whole mess off the table. The MSM was walking on eggshells.

And almost as soon as the nominal coverage was complete - the media itself started arguing for a "Rev. Wright free atmosphere."

The media had an obsession only with protecting Obama/Biden and with attacking Gov. Palin.

I suppose the embargo on

I suppose the embargo on news considered negative against Obama was so complete, that Dean considers a couple of brief mentions as an "obsession".

Chris

The msm reminded me of Pravda back in the old days. All they did was push forward propaganda for the DNC and target their opponents. It is a sad day when our press mimicks the Pravda of the old USSR.

'aided' suggests that Media assisted obama...

The Media damn well ran his campaign for him, axlerod was just the front-man!!!!!

A-freakin-men!

I am still feeling the anger of a 1000 white hot suns.

The media absolutely handed that man (yea I said it) the election.

The first time in history the Presidency was handed to a man that denigrated an active war that we started.

There are people out there saying that we should congratulate him or otherwise respect him for winning.

No. I stand for the gold star mothers and fathers out there. And there are still 4000+ of them walking around this country. Someone needs to have their back. It's gonna be me.

Sincerely,

Clearly things have changed. When did church goers start sitting in churches that they didn't believe in for 20 years? Is this a new trend or something?

Obama's Economic plan: more taxes, more spending, more regulation. Prosperity here we come.
