Perhaps it's the pied piper effect, but when Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama speaks, the media follow right along in lockstep.
The word "disaster" can invoke images of the aftermath of hurricanes, tornados or tsunamis. But, on the campaign trail where there are political points to be scored - it's one quarter of a slight economic contraction followed up by two quarters of shallow economic growth, according to Obama.
At an August 19 town hall meeting in Albuquerque, N.M., Obama said an "economic disaster is happening right now." The media ignored the exaggeration. Instead, journalists across the board credited Obama with "sharpening his message."
"Then he started running ads saying oh, Obama's just going to raise your taxes and he'll lead to an economic disaster," Obama told his campaign audience. "Mr. McCain, let me explain to you, the economic disaster is happening right now. Maybe you haven't noticed."
Compare that to the economic reality. Although the economy, which has yet to enter into a technical recession, leaves much to be desired ,there are encouraging numbers for the economy as well, as CNBC's "Kudlow & Company host Larry Kudlow pointed out on National Review Online.
"If the economy is in recession, why are business durable-goods orders and shipments booming?" Kudlow wrote. "Non-defense capital goods (capex) excluding aircraft rose 1.4 percent in June, or 19 percent at an annual rate over the last three months. Capex shipments rose 0.7 percent in June, or 8 percent annualized over the last three months. Business looks pretty healthy to me."
But rather than dissecting Obama's claim of "economic disaster," the senator from Illinois was noted for "sharpening" his attack - a buzz word used on the TV media, in addition to other outlets.
"Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., continued his sharper attacks on Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., today at Rio Grande High School in Albuquerque, NM," ABC News senior national correspondent wrote in a August 18 piece about Obama's remark.
Time magazine's Karen Tumulty had a similar reaction to Obama's economic pronouncement.
"Barack Obama seems to have gotten the message about his message. In the past few days, amid growing concerns among Democratic allies, Obama has begun campaigning in a different gear, one that is more aggressive in attacking John McCain and more focused on the economic concerns of struggling Americans," Tumulty wrote for Time.com on August 19, in an article headlined "Obama Sharpens the Message."

"It's the economy, stupid."
Wed, 08/20/2008 - 13:06 ET by wizardjrIt looks like this election will hinge on the voters' view of the economy, as it has in many past elections. I think that Iran and Russia go towards helping McLame, but not enough to swing the election. If he and the Republicans can keep beating the drum about the AGW scam, and drilling for oil (along with nukes and "other" sources) he can take this election and the Republicans can hold their numbers in the Senate and Congress. I'm not sure they're intelligent enough to do that though.
Substance will out
Wed, 08/20/2008 - 13:59 ET by KC MulvilleBeing more aggressive is only part of the equation. For the "attacks" to be truly effective, they have to be grounded in fact and reality. Anyone can make dramatic charges, the wilder the better, but unless they're real, they'll eventually bounce off. We may have a couple more banks go under, and it'll raise a fuss, but I think what we're discovering is that this economy is fundamentally stronger than we gave it credit for. I'd argue that this is what markets actually do: they punish unwise risks (like mortgages), but markets are much stronger overall than centrally-planned economies. This economy can take a punch.
The Haloed One is the True Threat of an Economic Disaster
Wed, 08/20/2008 - 14:52 ET by PSPCplWe have had two presidents that decreased the taxation rates (or as I refer to it, the legalized rate of thievery) in this country, and look what happened: we had huge economic growth (which the MSM works very hard to hide). Given the Haloed One's plans for Change (raise the taxes) and Hope (that you will have enough money left to pay your own bills), this country will go into a recession so deep and long that Jimmy Carter's time as president will be looked as the Good Old Days.
If the Haloed One becomes president and gets his way, we should all declare bankruptcy due an inablity to pay our taxes and our debts and see how he and the Leftards handle that one.
Aha, so now O can play dirty pool!

Wed, 08/20/2008 - 20:09 ET by JayTeeThis is a really Dumb political Ad, and I don't think the MSM can Defend this guy indefinitely without associating themselves with Ignorance. This stupid Commercial even needs defending and proping up by the MSM.
As usual, no Facts or Figures accompany the Commercial...it's just Hope that you believe the Messiah and whatever comes out of his mouth is Truth.
With 5% un-employment rate, you do reach an Audience....however, working stiffs on vacation like Obama was last week, don't relate to the Ad, especially if it's a Paid Vacation.

Thu, 08/21/2008 - 02:04 ET by sarcasmoNo, this isn't a defense of the socialist candidate over the statist who's favored around here, it's a defense of economic REALITY. I'll start by dealing with Kudlow's question in the most direct possible way I can:
"...why are business durable-goods orders and shipments booming?"
Because the Federal Reserve has opened the spigots to feed the addicts, Larry, while the CFTC ignores what's looking like an Enron-style scandal in the precious metals markets. We're spending/borrowing to bail out Bear Stearns and to provide a "stimulus package" for ordinary taxpayers along with all the other usual stuff like the wars & social programs. The only way to get that money was to print (issue) it or borrow it, so the Fed did. The idea that this current situation is anything remotely resembling fiscally responsible is laughable from my perspective, no matter how the news media or right wing media bias blogs want to spin it. Let's explore just a few particulars from realityville!
Fannie & Freddie are lookin' more and more like Bear Stearns every day as they bleed red ink. Only they're a lot bigger than Bear was, so the next socialist bailout will mean a lot more damage...
Consumer prices are rising at the fastest rate in 17 years. (Someone once said "inflation's coming" here, remember?)
"I.O.U.S.A." is coming out soon, which means more voters will know the truth about massive debt the TV media doesn't want to tell us. (Don't worry, though. That dangerous Dr. Ron Paul guy now has 0 chance of winning the Republican primary, so it's "safe" to show reality films while wringing hands & bleating empty words about fiscal responsibility.) Hell, at this point Glenn Beck's even getting the clue, with the help of Penn Jillette and David Walker: We are repeating the pattern of Rome*.
And there could be a few of those wonderful "derivatives" things on the "special" part of their books bankers, for some reason that's beyond me, don't actually keep "on the books."
But examine my sources. I'm sure us weird-ass libertarians will cite just about anyone to prove we're right about the spending problems almost everyone else is trying desperately to ignore, from media all the way to media-watchdog. Count this comment as a pre-emptive "I told you so."
