The media continue to have Obama's back after his ridiculous claim tire inflation could be a substitute for oil drilling in a speech at a rally in Missouri on July 30.
MSNBC anchor Alex Witt is the latest in a long line of media personalities expressing irritation that McCain is using the presumptive Democratic nominee's tire inflation comment in his campaign against Obama. Witt interviewed former Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott on August 7 about McCain's strategy.
"But sir, when John McCain picks up this tire-gauge issue and you know - throws it about back and forth, doesn't he just perpetuate the problem?" Witt asked. "I mean, if you were advising him, wouldn't you say, ‘Can you leave it alone?' or does it work for him?"
Lott, who Witt disclosed is a lobbyist for the oil and gas industry prior to the interview, disagreed that McCain is perpetuating the problem by using the tire-gauge issue against Obama.
"No, I think that the air gauge thing emphasizes how actually frivolous the Obama, you know, proposals are with regard to energy," Lott said. "Sure, everybody says inflate your tires more, turn your thermostat up a little bit more. But is that going to solve the problem? Sure we want conservation. We should give people tax incentives to insulate their homes better and do other things to conserve energy. That's not enough. You can't solve this problem just by shrinking your usage. You've got to produce more."
Obama has stuck to his guns on the tire-gauge claim at a rally in Ohio on August 5, calling naysayers "ignorant."
"The other thing is, they are making fun of a step that every expert says would absolutely reduce our oil consumption by three to four percent," Obama said. "It's like these guys take pride in being ignorant. They think it's funny that they're making fun of something that is actually true."

August 7, 2008 - 15:25 ET by Free ThinkerI'm not sure what Alex Witt is thinking. It was a foolish statement for Obama to make in the first place but as the media keeps playing it Obama just looks more out of touch with economic reality. All I know is the price of gas is not going to come down if a few people pump up their tires. Trent Lott nailed it - we have to produce more supply. Surely this newsreader could see that smackdown coming, couldn't she?

August 7, 2008 - 15:27 ET by Mr. KafirDo a large portion of American drivers actually drive on under inflated tires? Every time I get my oil changed, they inflate my tires to the proper pressure. I've never driven on under-inflated tires more than a day. This Obama schmuck is out of touch with real America.

Tune Up
August 7, 2008 - 16:26 ET by allanfAlmost forgotten is that Obama also called for people to tune-up their cars. Of course cars haven't needed tune-ups since 1985.
I don't know where they get the 800,000 barrels of oil a day figure for tires. But I'm sure that the people willing to supply that nonsensical figure will also say that tuning up your car can save another million.
Barack won't let reality get in the way of his dreams. After the Ford SUV rollover, cars were equiped with low tire warning gauges.
Tune Ups
August 7, 2008 - 19:10 ET by CobraMan"tuning up your car can save another million"
They seem to forget that a "Tune Up" includes an oil change. Unless you're using synthetics, that means 4 to 5 quarts of NEW oil to replace the oil that's drained out of your engine. That oil has to come from someplace, it doesn't come from thin air like the, well, thin air that’s used to inflate your tires.
Oh, Didn't you know.......
August 8, 2008 - 08:01 ET by connmanPep Boys volunteered the info that we should all tune up and have an oil change. That's where "The One" got that tid bit from I swear!

August 8, 2008 - 10:13 ET by CPT_ClawI freely admit that I am an absolute ignoramus when it comes to cars. I turn the key and go, if that doesn't work, I call for a tow.
I change my oil with religious fervor and take my car in for the maintenance visits as close as possible to the mileage demanded by my manufacturers warranty.
I've heard the 'since 1985 cars haven't needed tune-ups' statement a few times the past week. Maybe it's semantics, but what are the regular
maintenance visits I need to make to keep my warranty valid, if not tune-ups?
Subject for NewsBusters Poll
August 7, 2008 - 16:55 ET by bassndudeWhy dont we do a poll on how many folks here drive on under inflated tires? Lets see what the percentage of folks are doing so. I would be suprised if 5% were. That being the case, we could only save 5% of the 3% Obama claims. Which makes his statement ludicrous.
Save a SeAL, club a liberal!!
They Make this Stuff Up.
August 7, 2008 - 18:45 ET by allanfThe number Obama quoted is as made up as the 7 years to drill for oil number. No references, no real study. The left just gives a number. I doubt anyone knows the percentage of cars on the road with underinflated tires. As for its effects on gas mileage, thats more legend than quantitative fact.
Newer cars have tire inflation warning systems. These guys make the stuff up as they go along.

August 7, 2008 - 17:56 ET by ReaverI’ve been getting a special kick out of this “tire gage debate” because I actually checked my tires on the 27th, three days before Obama gave his speech. To borrow from President Bush, I don’t need a politician to tell me how to save gas. I am pleased to report that all four of my tires were inflated to the proper pressure. So my gas savings from the Obama energy plan would be zero.

Unfortunately, Barry, that's not quite what you said. The exact quote:
"There are things you can do individually, though, to save energy,"
Obama said. "Making sure your tires are properly inflated - simple
thing. But we could save all the oil that they're talking about getting off drilling - if everybody was just inflating their tires? And getting regular tune-ups? You'd actually save just as much!"
Barry, you made an unsupported and patently silly comment, and now you and the MSM are furiously tap dancing, trying to persuade the public that you didn't say what we all heard. That won't work in this day and age.

August 8, 2008 - 11:11 ET by namronI loved his hit on the Ms Dictator but. He needed to ask her questions rather than state the republican position. Ms Wittless "what are the current figures regarding disparity between production and import? In a best possible scenario how many barrels/gallons could the public expect to save? According to me Obama me and my fellow rebulicans are ignorant, but it seem these numbers don't match? There seems to be a gigantic difference between these numbers, yes? Would you say they Mr Obama’s claim that inflating tires is going to solve ALL our oil dependencies needs seems childishly ignorant don’t you think? Thank you Ms Wittless.

August 8, 2008 - 13:56 ET by azholmesHow much energy is used to acheive the needed pressure in the compressor to fully inflate your tires? Or do we need to use a hand pump?
