CBS Blames Gas Prices for Swimming Pool Crisis in Louisville

Just when you thought every possible gas price angle had been explored by the media, they found another fresh angle - gas prices are forcing cutbacks within the Louisville, Ky. municipal government, including swimming pools that little girls will be deprived of.

"When we arrived in Louisville [Ky.], we headed straight for the Breslin Park pool," CBS correspondent Nancy Cordes said on the May 15 "Evening News." "Half the city's public pools will be padlocked this summer leaving these little girls high and dry."

Cordes's "CBS Evening News" story was a part of its "Eye on the Road" series - an effort to show how people are affected by gas prices throughout the country. For the series two reporters have been driving across the country in opposite directions, one in a Toyota Prius and the other in a Ford Fusion.

Despite the city of Louisville's 6-percent sales tax rate, the municipal government was forced to seek budget cutbacks because of the high gas prices, hence the city's dry pool, Cordes reported.

"I thought it couldn't be true until I really came here and actually saw it, that it was - that it didn't have any water," said seven-year-old Lydia Kinloch.

Cordes interviewed the mayor of Louisville, Jerry Abramson, a Democrat, whose solution to the fuel costs is to buy hybrid vehicles.

And, of course, it's always

And, of course, it's always inevitably Bush's fault... What a bunch of morons.

We could drill....

Naw....its more fun to pick on Bush.

These idiots would rather pay 4.50 a gallon than persue our own reserves. No wonder OPEC isnt interested in cranking up supply. We could start extracting our own oil and gas. In fact, just beyond American waters you will find, chinese oil rigs...siphoning off what resources the greenies wont let us get to. They are hoping windmills make a big comeback I guess.

Lydia learns a lesson?

I hope 7-year-old Lydia learned NOT to depend on the government for anything.

Yeah, right.

You know there's liberal

You know there's liberal media bias when CBS dedicates a whole routine segment on "Bu$h's assault on America" and loops it into a "how you can go green" message by presenting the viewer with someone whose solution is to splurge on hybrids.

Test the water with your toes.

Let's see if I'm clear on this: Carbon foot printers over at CBS want us to break out the fossil fuels in order to heat a swimming pool for little girls.

Not to heat the pools. They

Not to heat the pools. They can't afford to keep the pools running because of the money they're spending elsewhere on gas.

Washington Monument to close!

This is nothing more that the Washington Monument ploy. It works like this: The parks are short on funds. They claim that if they don't get additional funds soon, they'll be forced to close the Washington Monument! The public response is overwhelming negative and they vent their anger at the politicians about the looming crisis and, surprise!, additional funds are made available.

This is just a variation to that ploy. I'm sure that the City Counsel could find the funds to keep the pools open if they really wanted to. Funds are available to them as they are still collecting taxes, so we know they’re not broke. It’s obvious that they want to close them in order to make a "statement." They’re letting the kids suffer in order to fulfill their own misguided need to make a statement. That’s just plain sick!

Fuel up the jet, I've got a crisis to report!

Again ... I thought that not using fossil fuels for ANY reason was the end game in the liberal AGW fantasy. Aren't high gas prices a desired outcome to force us all to stop using?

all wet

I thought public pools open after memorial day. Aren't they drained for the winter?

The glass half full

On the plus side, drownings are way down so far this season.

But what about the coffin makers?

Their business will be hurt by lack of drownings. I know thats morbid, but I couldnt help it, reminded me of the story a while back regarding the lower death toll in Iraq.

aero, yea,

however rest assured head injuries will be way up!

On another close down stuff that uses oil... Why not shut down 1 lane on the freeways, to save OILY paving costs? Great cost saving government ideas comming to your towns and cities soon.

Liberals/need/help/IranianUranium/<sleep>

Abramson is a typical democrat

so obviously, he hates industry and the local government basically overspent.  They blamed a poor estimate for tax revenue for the shortfall, but their estimates were irresponsibly rosy.   For months, Hizzoner has been making threats about services that would need to be cut.  Libraries, ambulance service, fire service, now the pools. . .give us more money, or you will die before the ambulance can get to you, or your house will burn down, or your kid can't go to the pool this summer, etc.

The AirPollutionControlDistrict is the anti-industry branch of the local government that aims to stifle the manufacturing base.  Abramson wants the city to grow and prosper by renovating the downtown area with shops and restaurants.  Of course, in the long run, people with manufacturing jobs pay more taxes than people waiting tables.

As it grows, Louisville is fast becoming a true blue city.

*Liberal hippie John Yarmouth beat out Anne Northup in 2006 for congressional seat

*Smoking ban in all publics places, trans-fat ban pending

*High taxes, losing industry and tax base

*More and more services and handouts

Maybe these sad stories

will soften the cold hearts of Pelosi and Reid and encourage them to allow drilling in Anwar and off of Florida! Meanies!!

Don't count on it. The

Don't count on it. The Senate just defeated another Drill in ANWR measure. The vote was 42-56; guess who made up the "no" votes?

mb... Glad I didn't see

Glad I didn't see it...I know if McCain was there...he was our hero again.

I can't take anymore of it...my blood pressure can't either.

I am not kidding...watched it too may years, made too many calls ect.

Well here in the town of New Bern NC

Busted!

Hay Mayor, if the city has the funds available to replace their existing vehicles with expensive hybrids, why do you claim that you don't have enough funds available to keep the pools open? You're lying about this, aren't you? Busted!

did the report check on global COOLING

did this reporter check to see if any of these pools were closed for maintenance and resurfacing, puming and filtration repairs, or maybe it's been too damn cold for the pools to open cause it's been too cool to play in my pool here in phoenix. kentucky is just a lil bit further north and in a cooler mountainous region than greater phoenix so maybe global COOLING might be closing them longer.

Bush had a GREAT IDEA

His trip to see the King in Saudi Arabia, and pretending to beg for oil, was a real stroke of genius.

By making it seem as if we went gas can in hand, and the King turned the United States President down, has us all talking about how the darn king won't let us have more oil.

In reality, President Bush is attempting to show how important it is for us to GO AFTER OUR OWN NATURAL RESOURCES!!!

The Senate said no to new drilling, and no to exploration, and actually the voted to just say NO to energy independence!

We get what our elected reps are giving us.

I applaud President Bush for putting himself in the cross hairs to make this point.

We have pleanty of our own resources but our elected reps only want us to buy hybrid! Show me the money!!!
