Cindy Crawford Fights Global Warming Malibu Style

Another celebrity has seen Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth" and found green religion.

Supermodel-turned-mommy Cindy Crawford, now a blogger for Vanity Fair's Web site, appeared on ABC's May 7 "Good Morning America" to tell viewers they can save the environment by buying a $20 water bottle.

"But my kids go to a school in Malibu and it's super-environmentally conscious," Crawford said. "We do beach clean ups, try to use less plastic as a school. And so, that kind of made me think what can I do? And, I teamed up with PUR, which is a water filtration company. They do the things you can attach to your faucets, as well as those pitchers and we came up with a reusable water bottle."

That's sounds great, except the reusable water bottle, made by a company that directly competes with the bottled water industry, isn't cheap.

"The other great thing, which is on their Web site, Thirstyforchange.com, if you buy one of these, which is $19.99, which is the normal price - the proceeds go toward safe drinking water for children in undeveloped countries. You know, kids are dying if they don't have clean water."

Crawford also showed off her math skills ... well, almost.

"Fifty billion [water bottles used a year] in America and only 50 percent are recycled," Crawford said. "So that's like 38 billion that aren't recycled."

Thirty-eight billion is not 50 percent of 50 billion. Assuming that Crawford is correct about 38 billion unrecycled bottles that would mean roughly 24 percent of them are recycled.

50 billion a year???? Do

50 billion a year???? Do these people even know how many a billion is?

Case in point 300 million people live in the US and we would all have to drink roughly 166 bottles of bottled water to get to that 50 billion mark. I may have at the most 15 a year.

"They need to have a course in college called common sense and everyone should take it. Problem is there isn't too many people that could pass or teach it." -my grandfather

Some poor soul is going to

Some poor soul is going to have to drink 332 bottles this year, because I don't drink any.

Using bottled water in this country (except in an emergency) is dumb. Maybe in Peru or Mexico, where one can't trust the municipal supply, but here?

I'll market my own. Claim it's from France. Call it "Terrier: from the inside of a dog".

They are only talking

They are only talking Hollywood people.  Her family alone uses over 5,000 a year.  That is insane.  At $2 a bottle, they spend at least $10,000 a year on bottled water.  They live in a country with good drinking water and we also have great purification systems, we use a Kinetico RO filtering system.  Their $10,000 a year could support a family in one of those horrible countries she is so excited about.

Even so...every man, woman,

Even so...every man, woman, child, illegal immigrant would have to average out to at least 166 bottles to get to that outrageous number.

"They need to have a course in college called common sense and everyone should take it. Problem is there isn't too many people that could pass or teach it." -my grandfather

$10,000 a year could easily

$10,000 a year could easily support a village in many places

You guys are sure a lot better at math than Cindy.

Came up with a "reuseable

Came up with a "reuseable water bottle"...??? Is it called "glass"?

Save a SeAL, club a liberal!!

Great Minds Think Alike

I was just posting the same thought when I read your post.

A reuseable water bottle is a glass.  You can buy them for as little as 99 cents.

Heck I recycle my bottled

Heck I recycle my bottled water bottles by putting water back into them.

I cannot count the times I

I cannot count the times I have refilled a .98 cent bottle of water from a drinking fountain. I mean, if it is empty, why will it not still hold water? What moron is going to pay $20.00 for a "reuseable" water bottle, when all of them are reuseable?

Save a SeAL, club a liberal!!

Sadly, Lots of People Will

Although it's a sad comment on the ability of Americans to reason and employ logic, there are far too many lefty modern libs who take it as an article of faith that such a bottle is a sacramental item that identifies them to other lefty libs as a "person who cares".

Seems like I read about Nalgene, a big-time maker of reusable plastic water bottles finding out that their plastic was toxic, and lo, and behold, a couple of minutes research found this:

Remember, this is Cindy Crawford we're discussing - she's just not a credible source - she's the fluff among us that we humans use to convince each other that we're special and beautiful.

What moron?

Q. What moron is going to pay $20.00 for a "reuseable" water bottle, when all of them are reuseable?

A. Cindy Crawford

I have nothing against

I have nothing against sensible efforts to keep the planet clean. However, I would like to point out that making the issue "chic" also tends to make it trendy and cheapens the whole effort. So, these celebrities, in their public efforts to show how "green" they are, actually hurt their cause in the long run, because what's "trendy" now is forgotten quickly. The whole Global Warming thing has been made "trendy", so that's probably a good thing...

Reusable water bottles have been around for many years

I've been using them way before someone told me I needed to spend $20 to get a good one. We have always used them at my sons sporting events and when bike riding.

Leave it to liberals to create the market and need for bottled water in the first place and then say - never mind, tap is fine but you need this $20 bottle. These people are such a joke and they are running this country.

Yes Dee. If they really

Yes Dee. If they really want to do something, they need to come up with reuseable water...

Save a SeAL, club a liberal!!

Crawford

Funny, when she turns her head sideways, you can right through it. And I've heard she'll be on The View next week. Ah, the "liberals"!

NEVER,NEVER trust a"liberal"

Paid ad

How many millions did the Pur water company pay her to make an a$$ of herself?

Old, Retired and glad of it.

Depends on How You Look At It

But Cindy, you have to rewash the bottle.  Doesn't that use extra water and energy?

I thought the purpose of using plastic disposable bottles was so they could be recycled into park benches.

And we all know those nasty soap liquids hurt the seals in outer mongolia because they get their snouts caught on the pop up lid (or something like that).

I'm so confused.  I can't remember which recycle/global warming program I support.

gee thanks, gpc - (Orange Alert)

Here I was feeling good because my sons have been reusing their plastic bottles for their lunch beverage for at least 7 years. (they do get replaced as needed.) Plus, we buy powdered Gatorade and reuse the larger plastic bottles for sports.

Had I only realized the wasted water and energy in doing this. What was I thinking???

gpc - you're on to something. Maybe we need a color-coded alert system (similar to homeland security alerts) to know which global crisis is the current highest priority.

A government that robs Peter to pay Paul can always depend on the support of Paul.

Global Warming Czar

"gpc - you're on to something. Maybe we need a color-coded alert system (similar to homeland security alerts) to know which global crisis is the current highest priority."

Great idea! I love it!!  Maybe if it can be injected into Hillary's talking points, it will help her with the POTUS nomination.

Hillary:  "Along with my poverty czar, I'm going to create a Cabinet level position of Global Warming Czar.  This person will announce each week whether we are recycling, reusing or just doing without".

38 half of 50? Reminds me of Chevy Chase as President Ford at the debate: "I was told there would not be any math."

Even worse, Balboa.  She herself asked the math question.  She flunked her own (pretty easy) quiz.

Cindy, oh Cindy!

" . . . the proceeds go toward safe drinking water for children in undeveloped countries. You know, kids are dying if they don't have clean water."

WHAT??

You mean all those Peace Corps volunteers telling 'native peoples' for the last 47 years not to s**t from the same well they drink from is STILL LOST ON THESE PEOPLE?

When will these 'undeveloped countries' finally get 'developed?'

Cindy - just shut up and model - or whatever it is you do now.

Never Underestimate...

The power of recycling. I seriously doubt so many bottles go un recycled, Cindy...just because people dont put the bottles into those cute green containers at the curb does not mean they do not go un-recycled. Big cities where you live have seperating facilities that would blow your little mind. They have people and machines sorting plastics from glass, from tin, from aluminum. These machines run at capacity all day and nite.

Chris Jansing of MSNBC tells us in her story from a few days ago that and extra $10 a month (as calculated by Brent Baker) caused this elderly couple to be tossed out of their home and are now living in a van.

Envirofriendly Cindy

Hey, airhead, how many times have you flown on a private jet? How big is your malibu house? What does it cost to heat your swimming pool?

Why are these idiots even interviewed? By a quirk of the DNA she is pretty, fine, but as we all know, there is balance in nature..heavy on the looks, light on the brains.

Just shut up & smile for the camera, you moron!

And, I teamed up with PUR

Translation: I'm being paid to sit here with you today.

"We do beach clean ups"

What? Last I heard, Barbara Streisand was chasing people off the beaches in Malibu.  If there's no people on the beach, there must not be a lot to clean up.  It must be stuff coming in with the tide from some Kyoto-signing country.

"We do beach clean

dup

"We do beach clean

"We do beach clean ups"
What? Last I heard, Barbara Streisand was chasing people off the beaches in Malibu."

That is a beach clean up to a hollywood liberal.

By the way, did I miss something? I can get a reusable water bottle at any convenience store for $1.00. Plus, it already has water in it.

Helping poor kids overseas isn't good enough; PUR is "green"

PUR is doing something good by bringing clean water to people in underdeveloped countries, and yet how do they choose to promote it? They send a C-list celebrity to pitch sales of PUR by trying to pass it off as a "green" thing to do.

Is it just me, or is there something really screwy here?

When you put the clowns in charge, don't be surprised when a circus breaks out.

Reusable Bottles...New!

I remember as a yound lad in the '60s scouring the neighborhood for glass soda bottles and turning them in at the corner grocery store for 2 cents each! These bottles went back to the factory, were cleaned and refilled. I'm sure a generation before me probably did something similar with their bottles...umm, milk bottles brought by the milkman returned every day and refilled? Perhaps Cindy and her friends in Hollywood and Milan should take a refresher course in normal life.

"Of all tyrannies a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive." - C.S. Lewis

$20 water bottle?

How do people afford those luxuries when the news tells us they can barely afford food and electricity? Which is it media, the recession is so bad that we're all going homeless, or a $20 water bottle is an economical investment?

Methinks the media wants to see the masses homeless and starving while telling them saving the environment is the real emergency...

Louis XVII is coming to mind a lot these days.

Cindy

Cindy Crawford is not thought of in Malibu as the "dumbest" person living there -- that should scare you.

So Cindy's getting Green Religion

Yawnzzzz. I like how she makes it appear that she came up with the idea along with Pur to sell aluminum bottles. She's so brilliant! How about those two mumbledy pegs interviewing her. They looked facinated. Cindy you are so damn smart! Wow is that real aluminum? We need more like you in Malibu Barbie land! God these people are such dolts!!

Because if you didn't go to

Because if you didn't go to college, you're obviously stupid?

Yes College Makes a Difference

I have met many more stupid people who did not go to even a 2 year college than ones that did. Unless your Bill Gates, college makes a difference. For science it makes a HUGE difference.

The Anti 'Man-Made' Global Warming Resource

Obviously celebrities don't

Obviously celebrities don't have the background in science to preach to others what they should be doing. Not that many people really do.

But they have causes, and they believe in them, and feel like they are in a unique position to bring attention to those causes.

Wow Celebrities have "causes" and "feeeeeelings"

So being a Celebrity idiot entitles you to what? Preach your brain-dead dribble to the public?

Wow idiots using their "feelings" have a unique position to spread ignorance - I had no idea.

The Anti 'Man-Made' Global Warming Resource

Actually PT,

your links on Globalony Warming are spot on but you are spot off on this one. Sometimes a college degree is just that, a college degree.

Going out on a limb

I am going to take a guess that people trying to act like college degrees are not that important or their holders are not on average more intelligent than non-holders don't have degrees but I'm sorry job requirements speak for themselves. More education is directly related to higher intelligence. I am not going to for a minute pretend that certain people on average are not smarter than others especially when it comes to education level.

The Anti 'Man-Made' Global Warming Resource

Maybe not, but those that

Maybe not, but those that do go to college sure have better logic/reasoning skills. The exception being liberals!

Ho-ho! Let's watch Poptech

Ho-ho! Let's watch Poptech excuse his way out of this one.

My advice? Don't exacerbate it. Just let Bal have his moment in the sun.

"Trake: Your lofty convictions are another blemish on the rump of congregational sectarianism." -Tumbler 5/15/07

It is over

I read his comments and I

I read his comments and I don't believe Bal was actually defending "green celebs" per se.

I think he was pointing out how many of us (including myself) see the entire environmental bandwagon as sort of a. . .what should we call it? Howabout a "sliding scale outcome" based on income?

Make sense?

I don't believe Bal has a focused agenda. I think he's just bouncing ideas against a wall and looking at the different POVs.

Making Excuses

He was doing no such thing he was making excuses for them. Unless you really believe that someone who uses 20 times the amount of energy you do should be allowed because of their "lifesyle"?

When these hypocrites start living like me and using as little energy as us common folk get back to me.

The Anti 'Man-Made' Global Warming Resource

PT: He was doing no such

PT: He was doing no such thing he was making excuses for them.

I don't believe he was. In fact, he admitted their hypocrisy.

PT: Unless you
really believe that someone who uses 20 times the amount of energy you
do should be allowed because of their "lifesyle"?

That's a question that takes awhile to think about. I'm still confused by it.

PT: When these hypocrites start living like me and using as little energy as us common folk get back to me.

Okay, let's consider that. How do we measure this? Let's say I'm a super-celeb. Even if I fly coach for all my gigs, I still use 20 times the amount of energy as a regular NBer.

But do I think they give much thought to the "causes" they support? No. It's sort of a chicken/egg argument. The celeb promotes it (badly), but someone else had to turn them on to it to begin with. Most likely another celeb.

But at the same time, they probably feel they cannot trust anyone that doesn't understand their lifestyle. The more you gain, the more you risk losing.

Nonsensical Logic - just more Celeb Excuses

Balboa said: "I also think that living green means living as efficiently you can within the framework of your life. Brad and Angelina fly a lot. But is it excessive given their lives? I'm sure senators fly a lot, CEOs. But it's a necessary part of their lives."

So a Celebrity can simply declare everything they do as a "framework" of their life but if we drive to work we are ridiculed that we do not ride a bike? But Brad and Angelina can fly to a press op in London for a movie premier and that is ok because their job demands it? Even though their "job" travel requirements will waste more energy then I will in a lifetime of just doing what I am doing? So the question is, is this about saving energy? Because if it is then having these Celebrities live like us will have a greater effect then asking us to live like the third world. You cannot have it both ways. You cannot say well Brad gave up his Porche for a Hybrid and he did his part now you have to sacrifice legitimate portions of your lively hood but these elitist celebs just keep on living how they have been with 3 instead of 4 homes. The only Celeb that practices what he preaches is Ed begley jr - I will give him credit for it (not that I am buying into it) but the rest can go to hell and you can take your celeb excuses with it.

The Anti 'Man-Made' Global Warming Resource

PT: So a Celebrity can

PT: So a Celebrity can simply declare everything they do as a "framework"
of their life but if we drive to work we are ridiculed that we do not
ride a bike?

That looks about right. I don't like it, but I think of it as an unwritten caste system. The people that pay for Brad and Angelina's lifestyles (the entertainment consumers), are essentially telling the rest of the world what they're "worth," correct?

PT: But Brad and Angelina can fly to a press op in London for
a movie premier and that is ok because their job demands it?

Yeah. I can imagine that despite the attention given to a celeb, that press ops aren't a very pleasant thing. Unless you're starved for attention, and I can see that some celebs are like that.

PT: Even
though their "job" travel requirements will waste more energy then I
will in a lifetime of just doing what I am doing? So the question is,
is this about saving energy?

I think it's more due to a mixture of liberal guilt and a genuine need to find something to "do" with the complimentary soap box they get that comes with the stardom.  And most of the time they use it without much depth of forethought.

PT: Because if it is then having these
Celebrities live like us will have a greater effect then asking us to
live like the third world
.

I know there are in fact, some (semi-famous) actors who still do "live like us," but it's the ET, Insider, and TMZ crowd that give the rest of Hollywood a bad name.

PT: The only Celeb that practices what he preaches is Ed begley jr
- I will give him credit for it (not that I am buying into it) but the
rest can go to hell and you can take your celeb excuses with it
.

I don't believe any of us, including Bal, are making "celeb excuses" here.

-PJ

Defenders of the Stupid

In the computer world you will find that Bill Gates is not an authority on technology. Don't confuse his business success with computer science intellect, the people that make his company successful are well educated. Microsoft only hires the best and the brightest from universities and they all have degrees, many with PhDs.

But keep defending dropouts as authorities on Science.

The Anti 'Man-Made' Global Warming Resource

Doesn't this list prove

Doesn't this list prove that the public education system is a failure? The dems solution "pour more public money into it". OR does it prove that the way to go is entertainment and screw productivity?

"There are two types of people in this country; those who provide freedom and those who enjoy it." MM says...

Not at all. It proves there

Not at all. It proves there are people who succeed despite not getting a degree in higher education. It proves that there are industries that don't require a college degree to succeed, similar to professional tennis players, golf, ice skating, b-ball, etc.

I know CEOs of major corporations that never graduated from college.

Yeah but screwing

Yeah but screwing productivity is much easier. What do all those you mention provide except entertainment? What if entertainment had to compete with life and death struggle? Like in third world countries? Where would bling and cribs get them then? You can't possibly be a captialist balboa. What would the people you vote for think of that! Free markets! OMG!

"There are two types of people in this country; those who provide freedom and those who enjoy it." MM says...

I'm not sure I understand

I'm not sure I understand what you're saying. What if entertainment had to compete with life and death struggle? What do they provide? Jobs for other people?

How does one elite provide

How does one elite provide jobs? I am saying the "opinion" of one elite is meaningless. They are so removed from the person that goes to work every day and puts in a 40-50 hour week (compared to Euro which is 32 to 38). Are you dense Amigo? The elite's are so above the average person economically they have no idea anymore what it was like to be average. And should we care about their opinion of anything, except "when is you next movie coming out"?

"There are two types of people in this country; those who provide freedom and those who enjoy it." MM says...

It only proves stupid people can make it in Hollywood

Yes there are fields that do not require a college education acting, sports, music but these are not the intellectual geniuses of our time. These fields are filled with idiots with too much money. Regardless many get acting degrees, a degree in drama, music education, fine arts ect... Yet too much of the stupid public listens to these morons.

The amount of successful people outside these areas are few and far between. The overwhelming majority of CEOs have went to college.

♣ a seal

Sorry PT

but you are dead wrong on this issue. I generally like your posts but like I said before. Sometimes a college degree is nothing but a college degree. You could still be flipping burgers for me with a degree. Yes, at times there are those that excell with that degree but the majority do not and are no smarter than your average person. In fact, some would think they were'nt so smart since they owe $30,000  or more for that college education.

The majority of businesses in the US are owned by your average "non-college" grad and employ more people. Of course, most college grads work for the business owner, a non college grad. In fact, your "non-college" people are the backbone of this Country. Gates was not sucessful because he hired college grads, he was sucessful because he was smart. There are far more computer geeks out there who did not attend college who could spin circles around the smartest computer tech at Microsoft.  If everyone he hired was so amart they would have their own business but technically, they just aren't smart enough.

Here is a suggestion. you need to get over the "I'm college edumacated and so I'm better and smarter than you attitude. It just don't really cut it. Heck, just look at who is teaching are college grads. You may want to rethink your position.

Burger Flipping vs College?

Is that some sort of joke? A college degree means the following at minimum: 1. The person graduated high school. 2. The person met the minimum high school credits, GPA and SAT requirements to get into college. Just to get into a 4 year college you have to be on a college prep course track in High School and it is much more demanding than the general course track. If you think people who graduate college are not more intelligent than those that do not I would like to see an IQ comparison study. What you are stating is absurd. Are there smart people who do not go to college, sure - absolutely. But many of these people can GREATLY improve their job position and prospects by getting a degree - anyone can go back to college at any age and in many different ways. Plenty of our service men use their tuition assitance to get themselves a degree. And you can always start at a 2 year school and transfer to a 4 to complete your bachelors.

There are no non-college graduated "computer geeks" who are remotely smarter than people at Microsoft like: Mark Russinovich PhD, Bryce Cogswell PhD, Raymond Chen ect...

"Computer Experts" are a dime a dozen just like their opinions. They all can install Windows and replace a DVD-ROM drive yet don't know jack compared to REAL software and computer engineers. Propaganda about Microsoft is never ending.

The computer field is vast and like the automotive field you can simply get certificates to become a technician or a low level network admin. But REAL companies like Microsoft and IBM only hire the best and the brightest with REAL degrees. Go look at any serious IT, Computer or Software Engineering job and you will see the requirements it is all College Degrees.

Bill Gates is a bright guy who came into computers at the right time when it was all IBM and software programming was a new thing. You don't hear anyone praising DOS as some revolution in software design. Bill Gates is an anomaly who was a smart guy at the right place at the right time. His real brilliance is his business sense and competitive ruthless manner. The rest was built on the backs of the thousands of brilliant software programmers and engineers at Microsoft.

I'm all for knocking the universities and their liberal bias but science and engineering is science and engineering and someone college educated will by far be more versed and knowledgeable in the field. I don't think we want to go down the road of shunning colleges and not sending our children there being under some delusion that they can be just as successful without the degree. I find that ludicrious as anyone would know applying for jobs.

Not to mention I recommend looking for a more conservative university as I am for my son.

An interesting note, how many of these small business owners hire accountants or attorneys with no formal training?

PT,

yes, I know it is hard to fathom but there are thousands of college grads flipping burgers and working in retail and other lowly, no college required jobs.

I am not here to debate whether college is a good thing or not as it is and I recommend it. I sent and paid for my Son to attend college. Of course he now works for me.

My point was that just because you attend and graduate college does not necessarily make you smarter but it can make you better educated.

The attitude that I am better than you because I attended college and you did not will get you no where in life. Well, maybe a journalism job or as a professor at a college.

I guess we will have to agree to disagree on this one.

100K a year no degree required

I firmly believe the amount of college degree holders holding down minimum wage jobs is ridiculously small and relates more to people attending college or working towards a higher degree, I just don't see anything to back this position up. If you have statistics that says otherwise I would be interested. Management postions in Retail and Restaurants are vastly different jobs then the "burger flipper". I see people constantly working part-time in between jobs doing whatever they can find but this is largely short term.

Education is directly related to intelligence and the more educated someone is the "smarter" they will be. Yes of course there are exceptions for people who can self-educate themselves.

This is obviously a sensitive subject for anyone who did not graduate or attend a college but I have yet to see any legitimate jobs advertised "100K a year no degree required".

 Plumber.

You can start at that?

Or does it take years? Many trade jobs can wind up earning very good salaries but they start off modest. I have never seen a job posting for a 100K plumber.

College is probably the only career paths that you have a chance in certain majors to start earning near that after graduation.

You can't start at 100K as a BS level software or any other kind of engineer either.  But a licensed plumber will get MORE than 100K.  In fact, a Steamfitter will get close to double that amount.

Those earning that kind of money without a degree are usually self-made, entrepreneurs.

Real Estate agent. If you were good, easily that much...until recently that is.

You can make even more than 100k if you're good at winning the lottery.

Who needs a degree if you're a good lottery player.  So there!

yeah PT

Generally I'm a fan of yours too but college dropout does not always = stupid or lazy.

I happen to know a guy right now who has a masters in Computer Science but was working as a stocker in Sam's Club last summer for a variety of reasons. I also kow a girl who got a degree in Biology, couldn't find a career with it locally, and ended up working at a grocery store while she went back for her grad studies. I know many, many people who went to college for business admin and are now assistant managers at their local Target.

On the flip side, I know a guy who dropped out of high school and ended up making 70K as an office manager.

Going to college is helpful, no doubt, but not a very thorough way to judge someone's intellect.

Career Success does not equal intellect

First of all please do not put words in my mouth I said nothing about being lazy.

Someone's wealth or career success has nothing to do with their intellect. Many idiots (see hollywood) have good jobs and get paid well for many reasons least of all intellect. Some of the most brilliant minds we have are hardly millionaires. Just like there are millionares who are absolute idiots but for various reasons were either born into it or knew the right people. There are always exceptions but if you look at the upper earnings bracket, the far majority have a college degree. And yes on average someone who graduates college is more likely to be more intelligent than someone who never went or dropped out. That does not mean those who did not go or finish are stupid, just like graduating college does not mean you are brilliant but it does have a high confidence level that you are smarter on average then someone who did not. That may be hard for some to accept but I there is a reason we have job requirements.

Businesses consistently hire college graduates over non for a reason. I've worked at colleges and extensively in the private sector and there is no remote comparison between the two. Again you always have exceptions but on average it holds true.

If Cindy Crawford was not a pretty face she would NEVER be involved in a scientific discussion with her background and yes her dropping out of college would have a lot to do with it.

Hyp-o-crit-abulous idea, Cindy!

How many (potentially poisonous) $20 water bottles offset a year's gas for a Hummer H2, the typical Malibu mommy's fave ride at an average 10mpg?

She's an environmentalist AND an inventor? She teamed up with PUR and came up with a reusable water bottle? Wow, I really must be on the cutting edge, because I have a kitchen cabinet full of reusable water bottles, many of them over 10 years old!
