'World News' Scaremongers Over Artificial Turf

They had to really be looking for this, but ABC's April 17 "World News with Charles Gibson" has found something else for parents to be concerned about.

This time it is artificial turf on sports fields.

"It's become part of the American landscape - synthetic turf, durable and soft," ABC correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi said. "It's everywhere, from stadiums to neighborhood soccer fields. But now, questions over whether those fields are safe. Health officials in New Jersey randomly tested synthetic turf fields across the state. Two of the fields had lead levels so high they closed them."

The reports of lead have caused alarm, even setting off an outrageous claim by Connecticut mother Patricia Taylor, who told "World News" that, "We've got our children playing in what's virtually a hazardous waste dump, I think."

Despite the fields being called "a hazardous waste dump," the Synthetic Turf Council told "World News" there have never been any reports of ill-effects caused by turf.

"The Synthetic Turf Council, which represents manufacturers, says in 40 years, not one person has ever reported ill-effects related to the material composition or the fibers," Alfonsi added. "They maintain their products are safe."

Wow, so "turf toe" doesn't exist??

Pardon me for not-finding "The Synthetic Turf Council" persuasive in view of about 4 decades of strong evidence to the contrary which tends to mention their products. But I'd agree that the problem isn't lead. I think the media's not the only biased entity in this story, and that becomes obvious if you "follow the money."
JMR

The tax & spend drug war looks racist in the real world.

I don't get it.

Is this suggesting that The Synthetic Turf Council is covering up the fact that they use lead in their products?

What the heck is going on? This is too bizarre...

In other news: There's a Synthetic Turf Council.

Where can I get some?

Where can I get some of this synthetic turf? I don't get enough lead in my diet.

Move Along, Nothing to See Here

An industry group says everything is fine, so let's just move on. There's nothing to see here, and any suggestion to the contrary is "scare-mongering"

That's the typical conservative response to any suggestion that a consumer product or industial process may be less than benign from a health or environmental standpoint. Also typical is incomplete reporting of such instances. Take, for example, Mr. Poor's omission of the fact the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has taken the possibility of a lead threat seriously enough to launch its own investigation. It took a five-second Google search to uncover the following more-complete story from USA Today:

I put astro turff on my

I put astro turff on my yard. I dont have to mow, and it rebounds well from the tires when I drive on it.

Save a SeAL, club a liberal!!

wha...?!

the report indicates they test fields all over the state, and found lead at TWO locations ... yet the typical liberal response is to hand-wringing and finger-pointing at the "typical conservative(s)."

Yeah... that's smart.

If it's a problem with synthetic turf, why only TWO fields?

Shouldn't it be rampant... widespread? (Of course.)

Clearly we need more gubmint intervention.

It's a Conspiracy

are you kidding me.?!!

So, what, the kids are eating this stuff?? That's really the only way besides inhaling it (hmmmmm...) that you can get any sort of quantity into you. For all you scaredy cats out there, I've been in electronics for nearly 40 years. I have used rosin core solder (lead plus tin) for that amount of time. I have not gone crazy (except when reading this kind of garbage), I do not have all sorts of cancers, etc., etc., etc. And, neither do any of the thousands of technicians I have worked and associated with during my career. I am so tired of this whiny bull crap from a bunch of neurotic idiots running around looking for this next thing that'll kill them. A pox on all their houses.

   If they actually want

If they actually want to test for the hazardness of the artificial turf all they have to do is run blood tests on the people who have had a lot of exposure to the turf.

A fishing expedition.

"Health officials in New Jersey randomly tested synthetic turf fields across the state. Two of the fields had lead levels so high they closed them."

Based on what legal criteria did they close the fields. As far as I am aware, I've never heard of any lead standards for outdoor fields. And how would children ingest this lead to cause any potential problem?

Speaking of fishing, I guess that children will now have to be banned from that sport, because the weights that are commonly used are not just high in lead, they are 100% lead.

The day that "politician" became a career choice is the day we started losing the Republic. Let's get it back! Alan Keyes '08.

Lead in artificial turf? Whodathunkit?

So, people have discovered that, behold!, some of the products that are made from materials recovered from the earth's crust have, gasp!, LEAD in it? Well, I guess that just proves that lead is an abundant element in the earth's crust.

But, hay, we already knew that, didn't we? I highly doubt that you'll find any ground anywhere on earth that doesn't contain lead in varying levels. The same is true of mercury, arsenic, cyanide, and well as any other naturally occurring “poison.”

But don’t worry because the "Health officials" know what is best for us and will protect us all from the dangerous world that we inhabit. It's hard to believe that mankind lasted as long as we did before we had "Health officials" to warn us of how dangerous the natural world can be and to protect us from our own stupidity.

"ABC correspondent Sharyn

"ABC correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi said. 'It's everywhere, from stadiums to neighborhood soccer fields.'"

There's no artificial fields around here as far as I know.  But hey, I'm just an ignorant hick from Pennsylvania.  Maybe we'll get some of them fancy fields if we vote for Obama.

LIFE....is dangerous!

Perhap's the sites were

Perhap's the sites were contaminated with lead before the field's were installed.........I mean it is New Jersey.

Now we know where they have

Now we know where they have been burying all the lead tainted toys from China.

America's Lead

America's lead (spinning, twirling finger) is coming home to roost...(wipe sweat off with hanky)

Since it's New Jersey, shouldn't they check to see what all the dead guys have on for jewelry under the stadium before they blame the turf???

Better than Lead... They

Better than Lead...

They should look into this one... Right here in North Carolina I know someone that built their house on top of an old Zircon mine. And I do mean on top. I used to go there and collect zircon crystals and was surprised that after a 2 year hiatus that someone had bought the property, bull dozed over the mine entrance and built a home dirctly over the site. As Zircon breaks down (over many years) it becomes radioactive.

Last year I went back to the site and actually talked to the homeowner. He has had 2 dogs die of some sort of unknown reasons. He and his wife, and his son, and his twin granddaughters all have one form or another of cancer, and cancer has never been active in his, or his wifes family.

Why is it the media always misses the big stories? Lead in the astro-turf, so what?

"Abstain from McCain"

A comment from a pro football player...

We need to go to the people who have actually played on turf for years. One such player commented in response to a question:

Interviewer: "So, do you prefer real grass or artificial turf?"

Player: "Well, I don' really know, man, I ain't never smoked no artificial turf."
