One of the criticisms of the media's coverage of Sen. Barack Obama's candidacy - both from his opponents on the right and on the left, has been that he's been given a free pass on a lot of issue.
The latest in particular had been the recently uncovered of Obama's former church minister, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, who had made several incendiary remarks about race and the government.
Eleanor Clift, known for her defense of Bill and Hillary Clinton on the syndicated show, "The McLaughlin Group," came to the defense of Obama in a March 17 appearance at The National Press Club in Washington, D.C.
"I think that Barack Obama represents a post-racial candidacy," Clift said. "But not a lot Americans feel that. I think the sentiments expressed in that church are not all that unusual in this country and I think Barack Obama is asking us to judge him on how he's lived his life and what he believes."
Clift, also a Fox News contributor and a contributing editor for Newsweek, was promoting her book "Two Weeks of Life: A Memoir of Love, Death, and Politics". Her book examined the Terry Schiavo affair and she compared it with her own personal tragedy of losing her husband, Tom Brazaitis, to cancer in 2005.
Obama addressed his former preacher's remarks in a speech on March 18.

I, and a lot of otherse
March 18, 2008 - 15:28 ET by motherbeltI, and a lot of otherse here, said yesterday that once he gave this speech, that would be "the end of it" as far as the media were concerned. Time to "move on." And indeed, as Sen. Obama said, talking about race never fed a hungry child....oh, sorry, I'm getting him mixed up with someone else....
He did say, however, (from what I heard of Rush) that we could keep talking about this, or talk about the more important things: "Shut up!" he explained. (Ring Lardner).
Has anyone in the media mentioned that he admitted to lying before when he said he never heard those extreme remarks? (Been in the car all morning, getting our daughter from college....only heard a bit of Rush.
Oh, that's right, Eleanor....don't judge him by Wright's remarks. How about if we judge him by his 20 year relationship with a virulent anti-American preacher? How about if we judge him by the fact that he knew more than a year ago, that he was going to have to distance himself from him? How about if we judge him by the fact that he lied and said he never heard him say those things?

March 18, 2008 - 15:23 ET by Cool ArrowThat's the problem. How many of us are astounded that those people we work with (according to Eleanor Clift, Donna Brazile, Rev. Butts, et al) are attending weekly Black Klux Klan meetings?
I'm blown away at these matter of fact admissions that it's chic to hate whitey from the pulpit.
The Reverand sends his soldiers into the street and they end up in prison. But it's whitey's fault.

The Question for Eleanor, Jeff, is: Which one will she defend..
March 18, 2008 - 15:28 ET by Gary HallThe Question for Eleanor, Jeff, is: Which one will she defend.. Obama or Clinton (B&H)?
After all, Rev. Wright's other remarks were an attack on the Clinton's, and I'm sure that Eleanor would agree, a lie (according to the defendant).
We're not talking about the clip where the pastor is screaming in hatred, as he thrusts his hips forward, stating that Hillary would as Bill Clinton had, f---ed the blacks just as he did Monica. This man doesn't just hate America - he hates the Clinton's.
Actually, it's not a rare statement from the black community. It was written and said a lot during and just after the Clinton era -- just was not a heck of a lot of interest from our news folks to get the information out to the voters. Shh... is the name of the game.
Officially, Bill Clinton never f---ed the 37 year younger intern, a volunteer worker, who was on his staff in the office of the people in the people's house; rather he just got 10 or so bj's from her, and did the cigar thing, etc. Usually when someone publicly accuses Bill Clinton of doing something that he didn't do, other than him having a pissy tantrum (well, he does that when accused of things that he did do also) he gets the word out (via his media friends). Clinton was all over the tube yesterday - not a word. He was not asked. Why the silence?
If Rev. Wright was a white pastor and was accusing President Clinton of having had sexual intercourse with Lewinski, would not we expect the MSM (and the big cheese himself) out attacking him, calling the Rev. a liar and doing all they could to destroy the associated Republican candidate.
This reverend should be held accountable for spreading lies about the great Bill Clinton. Where is Eleanor on that? Scene: Finger wagging in the air: "I did not have sexual intercourse with that woman. Reverend Wright is a liar."
Why Not?
March 18, 2008 - 15:41 ET by acumenEleanor Clift - Don’t Judge Obama on Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s Remarks
Why not? Isn't The Bezerkeley City Council judging hundreds of thousands of marines on Code Pink's remarks?
From what I heard, Obama's
March 18, 2008 - 15:44 ET by CapitalismRulesFrom what I heard, Obama's speech was once again fairly inspirational, and very well thought-out, but taken in the context of what has happened to him in the media over Wright's snippets of anti-Americanism, I thought his message overall was clear:
You're a racist if you keep pestering me about this Wright stuff.
So once again, Obama's speech, as lofty as words a man could ever utter, is another example of how the left uses platitudes and buzz-words to get the media off their backs.

The Issue Is...
March 18, 2008 - 16:01 ET by Wildcatter1980...that we are judged by the company we keep. Unless Obama comes out with a clear and unequivocal statement of his positions, we are left to judge him by his continued association with Rev. Wright.
Well, OK... How he has
March 18, 2008 - 20:56 ET by motherbeltWell, OK... How he has lived his life for the past 20 years is in a church with a virulent anti-American pastor. What he apparently believes is that all that hatred is just a part of the black experience... and that is the company he continued to keep. Until it came back to bite him. And now it's expedient for him to "distance himself."
Look, only last week his campaign put out a statement saying "Senator Obama is proud of his pastor and his church." Now how can you be "proud of" someone whose views you have to repudiate? Mel Gibson had it bad enough; what do you think would have happened if he had said he was "proud" of his father???

Chicago
March 18, 2008 - 17:03 ET by okiehawk44You don't seem to understand. The only places to worship in all of Chicago are:
1. A Jewish synagogue -- Obama is not Jewish.
2. A Muslim mosque -- Obama is not Muslim.
3. Or Rev. J. Wright's Christian Church of Hate -- Obama IS a member.
There are no other Christian churches in Chicago -- this is the ONLY one! Now shut up!

March 18, 2008 - 18:33 ET by Army Bratthat you can judge a person by the company they keep. And this child, Obama, hangs with some very nasty, hate filled people.
