Do you think the media have blown this whole global warming thing out of proportion by devoting so much attention to it? One New York Times reporter says it deserves a more prominent place in the media.
Andrew Revkin, the environmental reporter for the Times, spoke in Newark, Del., on March 12 for the University of Delaware's Global Agenda lecture series, "Boiling Point: International Politics of Climate Change." He said he thought this issue deserved more spotlight, but outlined why it didn't get it.
"On the climate issue, climate - science particularly - climate, in multitude doesn't get a lot of respect because science is laden with complexity," Revkin said. "Newsrooms crave ‘Spitzer, Prostitute.' That says it right there - where's the complexity? Or - stock scandal, or you know, $107 oil, or the Yankees traded somebody big."
"Those are the stories that are no-brainers," Revkin said, "and a story on climate or environmental laws or some treaty negotiation - those are much less covered and they don't get repeated and they don't obtain the sunlight on the front page as much." A Nexis newspaper database search revealed that in the last month, The New York Times has published 40 stories mentioning "climate change" and 72 stories mentioning "global warming."
Revkin wasn't as critical of the paper's reporting of the issue. However, he indicated their focus should be on "energy options."
"Well I think personally that we've done the best possible job we could do at the Times to be leaders in uncovering the reality that energy - because the energy options that exist are insignificant compared to the problem," Revkin said. "If we're serious about the problem, we'll do much more."

is the weather channel guy
March 14, 2008 - 12:32 ET by seaniepis the weather channel guy wanting to sue al gore news?
he almost did to get his name taken of the list of scientists
March 14, 2008 - 17:21 ET by lunaticcringeradioapparently he found his name on the list of scientists that al gore claimed that everyone believed in the broken sky theory and he never authorized big gay al to do so. he had to alsmost sue him to get his name removed, and there may be many more to follow. kinda like stuffing a ballot box in a sense is what big gay al did.
he has also pointed out the fact that if you can't prove global warming exists in a court of law, and anyone that sent money through the mail for these silly carbon offsets, they can prosecute big gay al just like al capone. but then you'd probably have to get the people like john travolta and george clooney to press charges against big gay al and they would rather spit into the wind on their global warming stance that turn on him.

Focus on energy options?
March 14, 2008 - 12:35 ET by YahooWatcherWhich ones, Mr. Revkin? Ethanol, that has driven food prices throught the roof? What's your plan Revkin? I can't drive now I'm not supposed to eat either?
Complex
March 14, 2008 - 12:53 ET by allanfLong term weather prediction is very complex. Freeman Dyson, a renowned mathematical physicist at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton wrote:
I'd go a little further. Navier-Stokes equations do describe fluid motion, certainly in the short run in the atmosphere. These equations don't do a great job of long term prediction.
In terms of mechanism. C02 is certainly does not absorb visible light. It does absorb in three narrow bands infra-red radiation. So it is an infr-red absorber albeit a limited one. It is also a trace element in the atmosphere. To justify this trace element as a mechanism for Global Warming, the claim is that somehow this trace element causes water vapor (which is a better infr-red absorber) to increase its absorption of infra-red. It is not a convincing claim in my view.
If our political leaders believe that they can regulate the output of a natural by product of human and animal respiration, a gas that is disolved throught the oceans they are sorely mistaken. The net result will be economic distuption with minimal or no benefit.
Revkin is correct. A media obsessed with dramatic "stories" is utterly incapable of serious coverage. Dilettantes in the news media may end up costing the US Economy trillions of dollars in lost production.
It's because the hoax is failing
March 14, 2008 - 12:55 ET by 10ksnookerThe death of the hoax came suddenly, first the temperature data was found to be jiggered, the temperature monitoring stations were improperly maintained and situtated, then the models were found to be rigged, the the final blow came with the snows of winter 2007-08. Even the notion that CO2 produced global warming causes it to get hot, global warming causes it to get to cold, didn't fix the crippling ailments. Eventually, everyone with a brain figured out man caused global warming was nothing more than a hoax cooked up to extract more tax money for liberal causes.
Now the temperature record shows no warming for ten years, the CO2 is still climbing and temperature isn't listening. The fever has broke. Something is disconnected.
Man now knows that cold is bad, warm is good -- and don't burn your food, you only get hungry :-)
Sadly, however, the power to
March 14, 2008 - 13:05 ET by mattmSadly, however, the power to set policy that has already, and will continue to damage or economy, and even the environment, rests in the hands of people who still believe the hoax.
Energy options ???
March 14, 2008 - 13:11 ET by RonCEnergy options are the last thing these socialists want to see - that is, unless they are stupid and deliterious, such as ethanol use.
see: http://www.ibdeditor...
Forcing government out of the energy business sector and obliterating tens of thousands of pages of federal restrictions would do far more good toward providing cheap energy than all the 'options' this clown could, or ever would propose.
"...it deserves a more
March 14, 2008 - 13:35 ET by Chris Norman"...it deserves a more prominent place in the media."
Hell, how can it be any more prominent? It has permeated everywhere - even in stories and shows that aren't about Global Warming. National Geographic Channel has just about worked it into their "Gangland" series.
"Gangland"?????
March 15, 2008 - 09:08 ET by motherbelt"Gangland"????? ROFL!
You have a point, though!
Whenever I hear this tripe, I am reminded of liberals who we see all over TV, 24/7, claiming that they are being "silenced"....
Serious about the "problem"?
March 14, 2008 - 14:14 ET by Seabeach4348<However, he indicated their focus should be on "energy options.>
Such as windmills, solar panels and "fantasy fuels" which don't work? How about we stop listening to the envirosocialist dorks with lots of time on their hands who offer so-called solutions which always make things worse? I'd bet that most of these misfits "don't work" either.
<"If we're serious about the problem, we'll do much more.">
Yep. We'll start drilling offshore, up in Anwar, or anywhere else on real estate that is ours for the crude oil that we need. We'll uncap the hundreds of oil wells in Texas (I believe it was there)and elsewhere and start making our gasoline. It's right there under our feet, and we can't get it because we allowed the likes of the Sierra Club et al, to set policy. Sorry guys, but conservation and abstinance from using energy just doesn't cut it.
Next, we'll start building some new oil refineries, our own, which would not only use our own crude but would create real jobs, not government subsidized jobs, but real jobs in the private sector.
Finally, we need to get over the silly, irrational fear of nuclear power plants. We haven't built a new on since the mid 1970s and we need them more now than ever.
And, of course, before all that happens, we need to find public leaders and politicians who have the guts and common sense to implement all of this.
I guess he doesn't actually read the New York Times.
March 14, 2008 - 14:55 ET by Dave in TexasI always laugh at these guys who feel that their newspaper isn't sufficiently conveying the urgency of "global warming". They are always totally oblivious of the fact that their newspaper also has things like a travel, entertainment, and automotive section that encourages the exact behavior that's supposedly causing all this global warming. There's a point where the newspaper would look a bit hypocritical:
Section A headline: "Global warming worsening! CO2 emissions must be reduced to zero immediately!"
Section D headline: "We've found you the best deals on vacation packages to Mexico, Europe, and the Caribbean!"
And let's not forget the 17 inserts advertising weekly specials at a dozen department stores.
Yep
March 14, 2008 - 15:32 ET by catnamedjakeApparently, The Weather Channel owner wanting to sue Algore for fraud IS news. Too bad the MSM will make him look even crazier than Al. *sigh* Hopefully it will make a few more people aware the Algore is just trying to make money. "I have the SUN in my pocket" yeah, the check's in the mail, love the new 'do. right.
can this glob warm can explain why ski season is running so long
March 14, 2008 - 17:15 ET by lunaticcringeradiowhy is global warming still being bought as an authentic story and not the scam that is it when we have global temps dropping consistantly and obvious cooler seasonal signs all over the place.
oooohhh that global warming is doing such a bad job on the ski season this year. i can't ever remember hearing so many ski & snow reports on xm radio since i owned it over 5 years ago. it seems like every break i hear a new ski & snow report come out in three different segments each day across the nation. these glob warms are going to be reduced to a gibbering puddle in the corner soon if they keep trying to sell their socialist dream wrapped in transparent paper of global warming.

Andy's the no-brainer
March 14, 2008 - 18:55 ET by Ralph Hansen Ph. D.I used to think Andrew Revkin was a smart man. I've come to realize he is the opposite of smart.
So what did he propose?
March 14, 2008 - 22:26 ET by pbthinkerSo, did he propose drilling in the Arctic and the Gulf of Mexico? Did he propose building a nuclear power plant every 6 months for the next 10 years? Nah, that might help make us energy independent. He's proposing ethanol, to raise the corn prices for the Mexicans, forcing people to buy carbon credits, forcing people to load their family of 6 into a Prius, and making Al Gore a saint.
