Barone of U.S. News: Lou Dobbs Candidacy a Possibility

Photo of Jeff Poor.

Lou DobbsThere are quite a few people already running for president, but one author recently suggested others might jump in: like CNN's own Lou Dobbs.

Michael Barone, a senior writer for U.S. News & World Report and the principal co-author of "The Almanac of American Politics," told an audience in Alexandria, Va. on December 13 that a Lou Dobbs presidential candidacy is a possibility.

"Other possible candidate I can think of is Lou Dobbs - on an anti-immigration, anti-free trade platform," Barone said. "He's peddling it every night on CNN. Even though he's on CNN, somebody's watching him."

Barone also mention New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who earlier this year left to the Republican Party to become an "independent."

"You can also have third party candidates as we did in 1992 and might have in 1996," Barone said. "Michael Bloomberg has been one, mayor of New York - whose personal income is people tell me $500 million per year - which is something more than $499 million more than mine."

Barone also explained to the audience that the perception of the economy going into an election, specifically the 2008 election cycle, isn't necessarily the best gauge of the economy during his discussion.

Didn't Lou Dobbs run before under the name of Pat Buchanan?

They must be kidding

Has running for president become some sort of "cool" thing to do like the rich people climbing Mt. Everest with not enough experience?

Lou Dobbs?

Howard Beale a-rising.

Lord help us.

If he does run for POTUS - which color hair he will he run with? (Grey, Red, or Blond)

Lou

Lou Dobbs says whatever populist things he has to say to promote Lou Dobbs.

If he was any (phonier), he would come with an ear and mouth-piece and a ringer.

No doubt Dobbs promotes Dobbs, but he's valuable

He's the only broadcaster who attacks the illegal alien problem every day.

For example he highlights the successes and failures of those trying to fight it, he exposes those who support amnesty and the charlatans who pretend to oppose it.  He has frequently covered the outrageous railroading of the two convicted Border Agents, constantly calling for their release.

Not to be overlooked is that his CNN audience is mostly left, so his illegal alien campaign has the attention of that side of the street.

Finally, it's hard to dislike a guy who said "Harry Reid is a buffoon."

You got that right RJ

Lou Dobbs calls them all out.Doesnt matter which party.

"For example he highlights the successes and failures of those trying to fight it, he exposes those who support amnesty and the charlatans who pretend to oppose it. He has frequently covered the outrageous railroading of the two convicted Border Agents, constantly calling for their release."

That sums it up.It is funny how some say he will run for president.Sounds like disinformation to me.

Lou Dobbs just needs to carry the water

Why anyone would give up a token job at CNN for the White House is beyond comprehension.

I do not put allot of stock in Barone as who in this world cares Bloomberg would run outside his ass kissing circle of brown nosers like Barone.

Dobbs is a no starter and only meant by Barone to float his name to weaken the surging RINO's so Fred Thompson will not get the nod.

I will though make the exact point no one has considered here yet. Notice who is attending the Al Gore globAL warming fest of love, but Bloomberg.
IT IS HIGHLY POSSIBLE this liberal trash Bloomberg who is a shill for the world elite like George Soros will be a party balance ticket for an Al Gore presidential run.

Bloomberg is all things Democrats love in being rich, a liar, a racist, a bigot, a child butcher, a sodomite, hates America and "will have come to his senses by leaving the evil Republicans to kiss Al Gore's behind.
Idiot "moderates" and faux GOP'ers will just love that unity abounds in a Gore Bloomberg ticket as it is being set up.

Dobbs just needs to carry the water and if he is a good boy get rewarded with being press secretary or being ambassador.

Frankly, I would love to be ambassador to one of the stans, Georgia or southern Russia for the hunting.........or even France now that Sarkozy is there as that would make nice Spanish bird shooting holidays.

Al Gore is not running for

Al Gore is not running for president. Why be president of the US when you can be king of the world's idiots?

I disagree

I dont think AG could win that vote.

Do you even know who Michael Barone is?

Barone is a very good conservative writer. He is highly respected and well known and is hardly a brown noser. He doesn't need to be. If anything people are kissing his ass.

Just because he mentions two people who you apparently don't care for does not in any way, shape, or form mean he is endorsing them. He is just passing along some possible inside info.

Don't shoot the messenger.

Lou Dobbs only needs to carry.......

He can carry the water for the real president....Jack Cafferty. The liberals seem to think it worked for Dick Cheney!

Dobb's votes would come

Dobb's votes would come from the conservative base.  Perot was a great side-show but he helped elect clinton.

Six months ago, six months from now

Take a moment to consider what the presidential race looked like this past June. Hillary was a lock. Elizabeth Edwards was the major opponent, oh excuse me, John Edwards. Obama was not ready to wear Batman's cape but working hard as Robin, the Boy Wonder. The surge had barely started, and Harry Reid was taking pot shots at Bush and the outgoing chairman of the Joint Chiefs. Six months is a long time. Who knows what might happen six months from now?

  • I'm not a big Lou Dobbs fan, though I don't hate the guy. The idea of him running for president seems absurd. Than again, what did the name Huckabee mean to anyone six months ago? It's important to stop a minute to have a little humility. Who the heck knows what's going to happen between now and Spring 2008?

I will say this, however. The front-loading of the primaries also means that the most of the money will be spent early. That's a long interim between Super Tuesday and the conventions. You know there's going to be a fairly quiet time while the candidates try to refill the coffers they emptied too soon. While nothing's happening in the two major parties, the media will be gasping for anything political to fill the gap. It's a tailor-made window of opportunity for a third-party candidate.

Stranger things have happened.

Right on, KC

Of all the people who post here, you probably impress me the most.  I was just thinking about the whole third party idea while listening to Rush over lunch.  If there were ever an election where it could happen, it would be this election.

If 65% are still against the war (I think the number is exaggerated, but that's what the polls are saying), then a candidate who is anti-war, pro-border security, moderate on other issues could do some damage.

High praise indeed

Thank you timothe, I appreciate that.

However, I have no doubt that many other people read this thread, and were thinking the same thing, but I just happened to say it first. If Rush said something similar, that just confirms the hypothesis.

Besides, it's hard for me to take credit for ideas. I'm a shameless idea thief. If it's a good idea, I'm sure I stole it from somebody. Maybe it was a guy in the office, or maybe I stole it from Plato or Quine or some other philosopher. I don't feel bad about taking other people's ideas. If they were speaking the truth, I have as much right to say it as they do. If it's the truth, it's public domain, and therefore it ain't stealing.

KC, Huckabee could be one of the catalysts for a 3rd party run

He appeals to a very narrow band of voters, and if he becomes the nominee, his fatal flaws, combined with the leftist extremism of the Democrats, could draw someone into the race.

Glenn Beck, an early admirer of Huckabee, now flatly says that he isn't and will never be presidental, while Rich Lowry of National Review says nominating Huckabee would be political suicide.

So you could be right, forces from the left and the right could pull in a 3rd party candidate....but the way things are running, it would probably be (ugh) Bloomberg.

Please, no more of the Huckster

I pay enough taxes!

Could be

Sometimes the smart poker player waits for the others to play themselves out of the game. There are so many strategic possibilities that I wouldn't bet the house on anyone.

I can't get past the fact that there are so many primaries so early. Everyone assumes that this will produce two early candidates, but the opposite could also happen. Since all the primaries are so close, maybe no one could score a clear knockout, or (more likely) they all knock each other out at the same time. It's entirely possible that a couple candidates will hang back, and make their move when everyone else is weak and wobbly. We haven't heard much from Edwards lately. Is that by design? How about Fred? Is he just coasting, waiting for an opening? Or are these guys just really bad?

I honestly don't know how I would play it. If I ran the Thompson campaign, I think that might be my only chance anyway. Same for McCain. Same for Edwards. They'd have to hope the current media darlings wipe each other out, or at least weaken them to the point they can be brought down.

If you've been Watching Beck very long, you know Glenn ♥s Romney

But like Dobbs, Beck is rightly outspoken on a number of issues.

I'll keep Beck and Dobbs in the small group of journalists I respect because they are equal opportunity offenders.

Please no NOT Lou Dobbs

Look at how fair and balanced Lou Dobbs is having 3 alarmists on the show at once, including the discredited Mann and the James Hansen sock puppet Gavin Schmidt.

Lou Dobbs the Scientific Illiterate (Video) (7min)

"You could be wrong but why take the chance?" - Lou Dobbs

Good one Lou, now lets apply this thinking to all things not proven and start funding to counter them. Alien Invasion, The Sun exploding...

Then he declares the debate over! Oh no please, he may be good on immigration but coming from someone who is supposed to be concerned about the economy he accepts faith science way too easily.

}}---> Lou Dobbs

Let's all jump on Lou Dobbs, see if we can beat him down.

Certainly wouldn't make sense to support a voice that exposes the slimy underbelly of both parties.

There are lots of us who respect Lou Dobbs and his efforts to stop the flow of jobs out and Illegals in.

Here we go with the conspiracy to elect Hillary theories.  Are Bloomberg and Dobbs the Illuminati?  Just a sec, I think there's an albino monk knocking at the door.

Differences

There will always be issues you disagree with someone on.Some issues I disagree with Lou on.Still on most issues he is the one bringing to light all these elitist lies and manipulation of our system.

"Certainly wouldn't make sense to support a voice that exposes the slimy underbelly of both parties.

There are lots of us who respect Lou Dobbs and his efforts to stop the flow of jobs out and Illegals in."

That pretty well sums it up for me.

I don't fit in here---

Once again, I pop in for a visit and find I am a minority opinion. Yes, Lou Dobbs is a populist. Yes, he does hit on illegal immigration and free (what a scream) trade. I would vote for him in a second over most Rs that are running. I would vote for any candidate of any party that will lock the borders, enforce the rule of law and punish employers who violate them. I was out Christmas shopping with my wife. It is damn near impossible to find anything that is not made in China. Free trade --the two words that will result in America becoming a second class nation--the way it s being applied now. I had thought that Unsane was the chief supporter of "free trade". (For God's sake Unsane if you jump in please do not mention the Corn Law again and some esoteric economists.)

Here's an economics question from one who has not studied economics: If all goods are significantly cheaper because the labor cost of manufacturing them is $2 a day, who will be able to buy them if they don't have a job????

And nooo-  there is no SPP no NAU in the works. It's all a figment of my mind. I had better stop reading because , I mean, what the hell, it's only jelly beans, and Fisher Price and Mattel and textile industries and H1B visas. What about those wonderfully cheap drugs from China? Huh? As the old saying goes, "they'll either cure you or kill you".

But why should anyone vote for someone who wants to stop all that?? Why would anyone even consider a Dobbs , Hunter, Tancredo or Paul??

Hell man, give me a pro-abortion , lying bag of sh** anyday. Give me people who change their stand on issues as quickly as they change their socks. Give me people who protect me by voting for a law that allows them to declare my writings as "violent radicalization" and send me to a detention center.  Those are the kind of people we want in office.

On Dobb's show he talks about the war on the middle class-do you deny it exists??

When you wake up on Christmas morning a couple of years from  now and find driver's licenses for illegals in your stocking as you sit home and wait for the next unemployment check, you may think Lou Dobbs, Ron Paul, Duncan Hunter or Tom Tancredo were the last of the American patriots.

Oh yes, Dobbs, to the best of my knowledge, thinks the surge has worked. What a fool, eh????

A patriot must always be ready to defend his country against his government.

 Umm misterbill, I like

Umm misterbill, I like alot of what Lou say's, but then again I liked alot of what Arnold said in his movies, and alot of what Jesse Ventura as a commentator for the WWF said.

Somewhere down the line though experience and cashing check's the hole in your mug writes, count's more than anything, and I dont' think anyone's willing to jump on the Dobb's train just yet, because he ruffles a few of the left's feather's.

Just remember when you see a "journalist' on T.V., they are usually an entertainer first, and then a journalist.

The issue for me is that Dobbs seems to be the only one who focuses on what, I consider to be the biggest threat to America--the diminishing of the American middle class? (Bigger than Iraq.) I simply compare what he says, (and how does anyone know who is lying until they are put to the test), to what the rest say and what I know about them. I will grant you that I know less about Dobbs than most of the other candidates. That is my exposure if he runs.

"Just remember when you see a "journalist' on T.V., they are usually an entertainer first, and then a journalist"

This is true, so one has to be very careful. On the other hand, most candidates are actors too!!!

Just remember when you

Just remember when you see a "journalist' on T.V., they are usually an entertainer first...

And, unfortunately, they ain't even remotely entertaining either.

Check out my exclusive edit of BBC News America's interview with Mrs Clinton: It's news to me!

Yup

"And, unfortunately, they ain't even remotely entertaining either."

Aint that the truth.I agree with Misterbill. One question I would of liked to seen in the debates. If the goverment cant build a fence how can they run Heath Care for the country. Also if they cant get funding for the fence how are they going to get it for Heath Care. The funny thing is you always hear about the middle class but rarely about the working class. At least Lou knows they are out there. To bad we dont outsource Journalist and politicians or let illegals have their job.

On most every issue he brings up, I'm fully in step with Lou Dobbs.
