It is simple economics - something is worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it. But that's not fair according to CBS "Early Show" co-host Hannah Storm.
See video here.
Storm gave her best shot at making an emotional plea for Hannah Montana concert tickets because the $200 price tag is just too high, although Storm has had a lengthy career in major network TV journalism, dating back to 1989 when she anchored "CNN Sports Tonight."
"They're dying to go to the concert," Storm said of her children (including one named Hannah) who appeared with her on the November 21 broadcast. "They've been asking since the summer. I've been trying for months on the Internet, pulling every string I know, making phone calls, all to no avail. I can not get Hannah Montana tickets and it is so frustrating. I logged onto online ticket reseller Stubhub.com. So, checking ticket prices, here's the latest - for the show I want to go to, they start at $200 and go all the way up to $20,000 for one ticket. Can you believe that?"
Nothing tugs at holiday heartstrings like having to see a cheapskate mommy forced to deprive her daughters of Hannah Montana concert tickets because of the price.
"We can't go," Storm said to her daughters. "We can't - look at that - $20,000. That's crazy." That's also a wild exaggeration.
One solution Storm suggested: The passage of a bill proposed by Florida Democratic state legislator Dan Gelber that enacts "tough rules to crack down on Internet brokers."
"So, average consumers cannot get tickets at face value," Storm said to Gelber, who appeared on "The Early Show" with his two daughters who are also being deprived from seeing a Hannah Montana concert. "They're reselling them at huge prices. But we're not talking about shady guys on street corners scalping tickets. How do you stop this from happening on the Internet? What is your bill proposing?"
According to Gelber, his bill would deem automated dialing as a deceptive and unfair trade practice and require the ticket brokers to file a bond and register with his state.
"This brings the Internet folks into the state physically and also requires some penalties if they do these kinds of I think pretty predatory practices," Gelber said.

Hannah Storm
November 21, 2007 - 15:20 ET by ricklailI think that she got her start with WRET channel 36 in Charlotte when the station was new. Nobody watched it. It wasn't until they got the NBC affiliation before it took off. She did sports on there.

November 21, 2007 - 15:20 ET by hs29fanGod forbid that a Liberal understands the concept of supply and demand. This is the hotest ticket with the "tweens" and poor Hannah can't get any tickets. Bring on goverment controls, what a crock!
Poor Liberal, he's educated beyond his intelligence
What a joke
November 21, 2007 - 15:28 ET by mvfreemanAnybody willing to pay $200 a ticket to see Hannah Montana lip synch needs their head examined. It's not the end of the world if your little spawn can't see her in concert. You can't alway get what you want.
Disney seems to know a thing or two about turning kids into good little consumers. It's all about image and marketing.
I imagine Hannah and Billy Ray are laughing all the way to the bank.
They will just have to wait
November 21, 2007 - 16:10 ET by sunandsteelThey will just have to wait for the downturn in Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus' popularity, then they could see her in the clubs for $15. Thats how I saw all those hair metal bands, lol.

sunandsteel
November 21, 2007 - 17:22 ET by mvfreemanThat's usually how it works but her targeted demographic is very limited. Plus it's tastes change as they get older. She has to cash in while she can . I dont begrudge her that but she won't be making any money off of me or my kids.(They're too old anyway.)
Speaking of older bands I was suprised that Rush was still getting top price for tickets. Their last CD is damn good though. Seen them 4 times through the years.
Yeah, I was just being silly
November 21, 2007 - 17:31 ET by sunandsteelYeah, I was just being silly about the club thing, lol. Very true, make that money while you can, are ya hearin me Britney?
Older bands surprise me too, havent seen Rush but have seen Aerosmith twice. Damn good show for a bunch of old dudes. Iron Maiden is another band that gets big money and fills big arenas, always kind of a joke with a lot of people but Im sure they arent minding all that money they make.
I guess that just kinda proves if you actually have talent, people will dig your stuff for a long time.

Yup.
November 21, 2007 - 17:50 ET by mvfreemanTalent trumps hype in the long run.
Seen Aerosmith 3 times going back to '86. Good shows. Seen Maiden once whenever the Seventh Son tour was. Great stage setup.
Maiden always has cool stage
November 21, 2007 - 17:54 ET by sunandsteelMaiden always has cool stage setups. Someday I will get to see them.
Aerosmith in '86, was that the Done With Mirrors tour? Pretty decent album IMO, not a lot of people give it attention.

My memory is hazy!!
November 21, 2007 - 18:04 ET by mvfreemanI can't recall without actually looking it up. We drove up to Dallas for a Texxas Jam/Monsters of Rock festival at the cotton bowl. Plus we all know what goes on at those shows. ;) I was fairly toasted.
Permanent Vacation is a good 80's album from them too.
I want to see Tool when they come to Houston in December. That ought to be wild.
LOL Yeah I know what goes on
November 21, 2007 - 18:20 ET by sunandsteelLOL Yeah I know what goes on at those shows.
Never seen Tool, was gonna see A Perfect Circle, but my car broke so my ticket money went to fix that car.
We dont get big shows here very often. If someone does come, better go see them cause they probably arent ever coming again.

Clubbin' with Hannah

Hannah Montana will be completely forgotten by the time both she and her fans can legally enter clubs.

Various ramblings
November 21, 2007 - 16:59 ET by UnsaneQuite the cynical take.
Not having children, I have no idea who or what the hell Hannah Montana is (any relation to Joe?), but so what? There was a recent appearance by her in Houston and parents all took their kids down there for a fun afternoon. Eighteen years ago or so, it was the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles that were all the rage. People make money off of such things, but the children have a good time with it. That's all that matters.
If someone's making a few bucks off of it, so what?
As for Hannah Storm's crying: she's economically impaired anyways. Those tickets are $200 for a reason. Read the tagline.

People whine about it, then
November 21, 2007 - 17:07 ET by sunandsteelPeople whine about it, then they shell out 200 bones anyway. And besides, if you look at these outlets selling the tix, they say they mark them up.
Not really related to that, but I have no clue what your tagline says. Maybe I missed something.

The tagline
November 22, 2007 - 03:22 ET by UnsaneAs much as I want to provide the English translation of my tagline...naaaahhhhhh. However, if you understand it and embrace it, you will hold the key to understanding economics.
And you will know that there is no such thing as a "markup" as well.

Internet scalpers suck
November 21, 2007 - 15:29 ET by nnptcgradThere was a huge problem with internet scalpers for this concert. From what I heard almost all of the tickets were gone within minutes, only to show up shortly later for two, three or even four times the going rates.

Scalpers do suck.
November 21, 2007 - 16:07 ET by sunandsteelIn my neck of the woods, the max number of tickets you can buy at one time is 8, I guess there are ways around that though.
A solution would be to sell a limited number through a fan club, like AeroForce One. $30 or so a year, buy tickets early, special packages, meet the band and such. Can only buy two tickets per show, but beats the heck out of waiting in line all night to see the show at the back of the arena.
What doesn’t kill you, only makes you pissed off. -Children of Bodom
that was the problem her fan
November 22, 2007 - 00:53 ET by red_dragon311that was the problem her fan club chagred 50 bucks a year for her fan club and to get tickets early....well alot os scalpers where in her fan club, and they ate up the tickets
Here is the real reason
November 21, 2007 - 15:39 ET by jdhawkHere is the real reason that Dan "Don Coreleon" Gelber wants legislation that will ensure, "tough rules to crack down on Internet brokers:" "According to Gelber, his bill would deem automated dialing as a deceptive and unfair trade practice and require the ticket brokers to file a bond and register with his state."
Goober could care less if tickets are getting scalped at the venue or on line so long as the government gets their "beak wet." Think of the jobs, the overhead, the fees, and the enforcement costs that can be derived from this new "protection" that the government will provide through this legistlation. And, of course, the jobs, the overhead, the fees, and the enforcement of the legistlation will come out of our pockets in the form of higher taxes and higher ticket prices.
But, Storm, et all, will not have buy scalped tickets again. Yeah, right! Ever heard of off shoring?

During this holiday season,
November 21, 2007 - 16:51 ET by mikejDuring this holiday season, let's all pause and remember Hannah Storm's children who will unfairly and tragically not be able to see an overpriced concert and undertalented performer.
Please, pause during Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow and know that somewhere on the Upper East side of Manhattan, there's two young girls that will have to suffer enormous emotional distress as they have to find something else to do on their mothers six to seven figure salary.

November 21, 2007 - 16:56 ET by Dr_LibertyExactly right, Mike. How much does Hannah Storm make? And how much does that raise the price of advertising on her network? That's not fair! Whaaaa!
This is just some six figure talking head posturing like she is just some typical mom eeking out a living. Boo hoo.
Seriously, what does Hannah Storm make? Anybody know?

I can relate to this, as I
November 21, 2007 - 21:03 ET by msh1973I can relate to this, as I have two 13 year daughters. We took them to see the Jonas Brothers at the Georgia State Fair. The tickets were $15 and that included entrance to the Fair. What happened with the Hannah Montana tickets....it sold out so fast due to scalpers, which in turn sold them for an outrageous price.

Wow....no wonder the MsM expects people to bankrupt themselves over Christmas.

As the mom to a 9 year old
November 26, 2007 - 12:04 ET by nathaniaAs the mom to a 9 year old girl, I will say the Hannah Montana thing is pretty frustrating.
Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus is a good role model for my little girl. Before, it was Hilary Duff, but when she recently posed in risque clothing for the cover of Maxim, I wanted less of the Duff.
Thankfully, Hannah Montana is the new favorite.
Last week, I checked for tix to the Greensboro show, which was yesterday. There were still many tickets left. It's just disappointing that little girls didn't see the show and ticket scalpers could care less whether or not they sold all the tix.
Still, as a conservative, it's hard to find a solution.
Thankfully, we're going to Ohio after Christmas, and decided to stay a few extra days in order to go to the Cleveland show. By the time the Cleveland tix went on sale, they had restricted who could order the tix by a 75 mile radius, so we had to use my mother-in-law's credit card to order - but at least we got good tix.
Anyway, some of you have left some nasty comments - and really - that makes you no better than a "whining" CBS anchor or many of the liberals you decry.
