Was That Romney You Were Condemning, Chris Matthews - or JFK?
Chris Matthews loathes Mitt Romney and reveres John F. Kennedy. Oddly enough, when Matthews vilifies Romney, you'd swear he was talking about Kennedy.
Matthews, author of the JFK hagiography "Elusive Hero," had this to say about Romney last night during MSNBC's coverage of the New Hampshire primary while jousting with former Granite State governor John Sununu (video after page break) --
MATTHEWS: Do you actually think use of terms like, I feared pink slips, and I'm unemployed, another phrase he uses when he campaigns for office, is appropriate at a time we have about eight-plus, eight and a half percent unemployment? You think that's appropriate for a candidate to identify with the unemployed when at no time in his life has he feeled (sic), has he felt economic insecurity? He's the son of the head of a US auto company. I don't see that's relevant he's ever felt economically insecure. Has he?
SUNUNU: I think any time you go into a job and you're the last one there, you're worried about getting pink slipped.
MATTHEWS: Yeah, I know.SUNUNU: I think the fact of the matter is is this is a guy who is (sic) truly done virtually every-, all his success is attributed to the hard work that he did and put in. This is a country in which somebody can start and have that kind of great success. And to bregrudge him now for having been successful I think is kind of anti-American, don't you?
MATTHEWS: No, I just wonder why a fella who's been to boarding school and has gone to elite universities and never had to sweat in his life, never had to worry in his life about putting a meal on the table, should go out there and offer himself as some sort of Uriah Heap. Is that fair?
Romney -- "the son of the head of a US auto company," Matthews points out, referring to George Romney, who grew up poor to become president of American Motors, governor of Michigan, GOP presidential candidate, and Cabinet member to Richard Nixon.
Kennedy -- son of Joseph Kennedy, Prohibition-era bootlegger, Wall Street financier (lowest form of life, Chris, remember?), Roosevelt's first appointment to the SEC ("It takes a thief to catch one," FDR told intimates) and notorious appeaser who thought the Nazis were just nifty.
Matthews derides Mitt Romney as "a fella who's been to boarding school" -- much like JFK, who went to Choate. Romney attended "elite universities," he complains. True enough -- Stanford, Brigham Young and Harvard. Kennedy -- Stanford, Princeton, London School of Economics and Harvard.
Romney has "never had to worry in his life about putting a meal on the table," Matthews fumes. Much like Kennedy -- as to be expected of a young man whose family was one of the richest in the nation as he came of age and remained so through Kennedy's entire life.
Matthews' double standard demonstrates an awkward truth about liberals. Contrary to widespread belief, they don't hate wealth. They only hate it when conservatives are wealthy.

JFK wouldn't even cut it as a 'Democrat' these days - especially with THIS REGIME!!! He was white - he was rich - he was a believer in American strength and ideals. How far do you think that would have got him - given what Boy Barry, Mooooooooochie, Ms. Botox, Harry the Weasel, and the MSM would think??? I don't even think the 'Camelot' thing would have flown with these knee-pad crawlers that we have in the State-Run Media. And............did I mention the OWS bowel movement??? Hell, JFK is in the upper echelon of the '1%;!!!
And given the standards of some of 'our' Republicans..............I'm not so sure if Kennedy would even be welcomed into the Republican Party either.
Democrats always put up JKF in a pinch.

I see this as a cynical use of wealth in the manner to which it benefits Democrats.
One cannot mention JFK and wealth in the same breath.
Elite shall not abuse elite.
So, Matthews withholds the truth about the revered Democrat Presidents. JFK and FDR were no Harry Truman.

Republicans seem just about as likely as are Democrats to cite JFK, just as Democrats will do likewise with Reagan when it is thought to suit their purposes. The reason is obvious: Each has achieved iconic status within his respective party and is therefore more immune to criticism. At least it forces the opponent to immediately start coming up with justifying distinctions.

obama went to a private, mostly white, school then attended Colombia and Harvard universities without needing student loans or working at a job. His political life has also been one of relative ease as political pals and media support made easy work of his rise to the presidency. I guarantee Romney has produced a lot more sweat through working than obama ever has or will.

Now elite schools are bad?

Four years ago, they disparaged Sarah Palin because she went to a (gasp!) state university. In Idaho of all places! How dare someone who didn't graduate from an Ivy League or even an East Coast primo state university think that she could be Vice-President!
Now Tingles is criticizing Gov. Romney for attending a boarding school and elite universities? He did the same as Duh One, except Romney's prep school had dorms, and I'm sure Romney won't hide his transcripts.
Christie will never see the difference

Little Christie will never see the difference; he would not even recognize the stupidity of his statement. To recognize this would require him to be capable of independent though and that is not possible with him. He would first have to have the intelligence to think, and he has proven that that is never been shown. He only repeats the far lefts agenda or the DNC talking points (I know they are the same thing) he would rather commit suicide than turn against his masters. He is an elitist (in his mind) and complains that other that have earned their way into that class are somehow inferior because they don’t buy into the liberal trash, as he does. Just pity the man for the fool he is and do the worst thing you can do to him “Ignore him”.

But Tingles wasn't criticizing Romney for going to boarding school, or to elite universities, or any of these things. He was criticizing him for trying to put himself in the same boat as Americans that are struggling to make ends meet. The Lord knows I get just as many laughs out of watching this idiot try to make us believe his ideas have value, but let's not make the same mistakes he and his ilk do by attacking by taking out of context. Let's face it, how many politicians have ever had to face the possibility of missing meals because of lack of funds, but almost all of them try to project the idea that they feel our pain and have been in our shoes.
What, Republicans can't feel empathy?
Submitted by CobraMan on Thu, 01/12/2012 - 1:30pm.
What, Republicans can't feel empathy? Is that reserved only for Democrats? Empathy means being able to associate with the feelings and emotions of those who don't share your experiences. There's nothing to keep Romney, for example, from emphasizing with "ordinary" Americans. It's a rather good idea to find a leader who actually emphasizes with other people. I've had enough with the elitists in politics. It's the elitists, those who can't feel empathy, who got us into this mess to begin with.

Just because Mitt Romney (and others in this campaign) have more money than most of us will earn in a lifetime doesn't mean they don't or can't understand what not having that standard of living means. These candidates are all human, with the attendant life tragedies that get us all, sooner or later. Being poor, or better yet, NOT RICH, is no tragedy.
Get over it. Class warfare is for democrats, and Obama.
These candidates HAVE experienced real tragedy. Mitt's wife has MS. Rick Santorum lost one child at birth, and has another little girl who has a severe genetic disorder. Ron Paul is a doctor, and during his practice (which tickles me when he describes the joy of delivering babies) I'm sure he saw more than enough tragedy for a lifetime. Who knows what they've been through that isn't in the public domain?
I think sometimes we lose the forest for the trees when we expect a PERFECT candidate. These are human beings, who have had to react to their lives and situations. He who lives in a glass house should be wary of throwing stones.

As you said, you don't know. So why are you making disparaging comments about a topic that you, yourself, claim ignorance to?
"He's the son of the head of a US auto company."
Who was Obama's father? Oh, that's right, parentage isn't important during presidential campaigns, not even primary campaigns. As long as you're a Democrat, anyways.
