ABC, CBS & NBC Wait Five Days to Report Obama's 'You Didn't Build That' Attack on Business

When Barack Obama insulted job creators everywhere, last Friday, by charging: "If you've got a business, you didn't build that, somebody else made that happen," the Big Three (ABC, CBS, NBC) networks didn’t pounce on the politically damaging remark. It took five days and Romney making it the centerpiece of his speech on Tuesday before the first network mention - by Peter Alexander on last evening’s NBC Nightly News. In fact, Obama’s soundbite was ran exactly once, in the aforementioned Alexander report. Neither CBS or ABC ran Obama’s actual quote.

However, when former New Hampshire Governor John Sununu, on Tuesday, said he wished Obama "would learn how to be an American" NBC jumped to report the story on the very same day on that evening’s Nightly News. CBS got to the Sununu remark on Wednesday’s This Morning. ABC’s World News and Good Morning America have yet to mention the Sununu statement.

Both NBC and CBS used Sununu to bury Romney’s attack on Obama’s "you didn’t build that" charge. After Alexander relayed Romney’s criticisms of Obama, he reported: "The Romney campaign is fighting to redirect the debate, away from his tax returns and tenure at Bain Capital" with "Romney surrogate John Sununu briefly" changing the subject "but not the way he intended." After playing a clip of Sununu saying, "I wish this president would learn how to be an American," Alexander noted he was forced "to clarify" his statement then included a dig from an Team Obama: "An Obama campaign spokeswoman weighed in writing, ‘The Romney campaign has officially gone off the deep end.’"

On this morning’s Today show Alexander reported on "a fiery Mitt Romney" accusing the president of "being anti-entrepreneur" but then later noted: "Romney surrogate John Sununu tried to hammer the President on the same theme...but Sununu may have overshot his target."

Over on Wednesday’s CBS This Morning, Dean Reynolds noted: "Romney tried to turn the conversation back to the economy, saying it's hurting because of what he suggested was the President's hostility to business." After playing a soundbite from Romney, Reynolds undercut the GOP challenger’s argument: "But his point was overshadowed all day, after Romney supporter and former New Hampshire Governor John Sununu tried to push the argument with words that questioned Mr. Obama's patriotism." After the Sununu soundbite Reynolds slammed: "It was the kind of statement usually emanating from the political fringe, and Sununu apologized within hours. But it was another off-message distraction, as Romney struggled to gain the upper hand, turn the spotlight on Mr. Obama, and talk about something other than how much or little he paid in taxes."

ABC has yet to run a clip of Obama’s anti-business rant. Instead Josh Elliott, on Wednesday’s Good Morning America, could only offer this vague recounting of the most recent campaign fight: "The latest attacks between the two stem from the President's comments that business owners alone are not responsible for their successes. Romney called that an insult. Meantime, Romney is under increasing pressure to release more of his tax returns amidst relentless questioning about his financial dealings."

The following are the relevant transcripts from ABC, NBC and CBS evening and morning shows:

            NBC

Nightly News

July 17, 2012

PETER ALEXANDER: An unusually animated Mitt Romney today seized on some of President Obama's own words, charging that they reveal an anti-business bias.

MITT ROMNEY: If you want to understand why his policies have failed, why what he has done has not created jobs or rising incomes in America, you can look at what he said.

ALEXANDER: What did the President say? While outlining his vision of American progress as a partnership between business and government last Friday, he included this line.

BARACK OBAMA: If you've got a business, you didn't build that, somebody else made that happen.

ALEXANDER: With both sides angling for any advantage, Romney today pounced.

ROMNEY: To say something like that is not just foolishness, it's insulting to every entrepreneur, every innovator in America, and it's wrong.

ALEXANDER: And he added this about the President's view of the role of government services in economic development.

ROMNEY: We pay for those things, alright? The taxpayers pay for government.

ALEXANDER: The Romney campaign is fighting to redirect the debate, away from his tax returns and tenure at Bain Capital.

NARRATOR [OBAMA AD]: Tax havens, offshore accounts, carried interest. Mitt Romney has used every trick in the book.

ALEXANDER: Romney surrogate John Sununu briefly changed the subject today, but not the way he intended.

JOHN SUNUNU: I wish this president would learn how to be an American.

ALEXANDER: Challenged by reporters, Sununu later tried to clarify.

SUNUNU: The president has to learn the American formula for creating business.

ALEXANDER: Still, an Obama campaign spokeswoman weighed in, writing, "The Romney campaign has officially gone off the deep end."

NBC

Today

July 18, 2012

PETER ALEXANDER: In Pennsylvania Tuesday, a fiery Mitt Romney accused the President of being anti-entrepreneur.

ROMNEY: To say that Steve Jobs didn't build Apple, that Henry Ford didn't build Ford Motor, that – that Papa John didn't build Papa John pizza.

ALEXANDER: Romney surrogate John Sununu tried to hammer the President on the same theme.

JOHN SUNUNU: The men and women all over America who have worked hard to build these businesses...it is the American way.

ALEXANDER: But Sununu may have overshot his target.

SUNUNU: I wish this president would learn how to be an American.

ALEXANDER: Team Obama quickly pounced, writing, "The Romney campaign has officially gone off the deep end."

SUNUNU: I probably was a little bit too harsh there. That's not the best choice of words, but the message was clear. This President doesn't understand the American free enterprise system.

This Morning

July 18, 2012

DEAN REYNOLDS (voice-over): In Pennsylvania on Tuesday, Romney tried to turn the conversation back to the economy, saying it's hurting because of what he suggested was the President's hostility to business.

ROMNEY: Look, President Obama attacks success, and therefore, under President Obama, we have less success. And I will change that. (audience cheers and applauds)

REYNOLDS: But his point was overshadowed all day, after Romney supporter and former New Hampshire Governor John Sununu tried to push the argument with words that questioned Mr. Obama's patriotism.

JOHN SUNUNU, ROMNEY SENIOR ADVISOR: I wish this president would learn how to be an American.

REYNOLDS: It was the kind of statement usually emanating from the political fringe, and Sununu apologized within hours. But it was another off-message distraction, as Romney struggled to gain the upper hand, turn the spotlight on Mr. Obama, and talk about something other than how much or little he paid in taxes.

They can't report what the Prez says

Submitted by OhioHistorian on Wed, 07/18/2012 - 5:32pm.

The MSM can't report what the Prez says. He didn't send them a fax telling them that he said something so totally stupid that he tried to call it back about 5 ways. Too bad that there is all of that tape out there that has him saying it.

Romney made a point to which I will add. You have made 100 campaign trips this year. You have played about 50 rounds of golf. How many meetings have you had with that eyewash jobs council that you put under that lightweight from GE? Just like everything else. A flash in the pan, and then nothing. You are all blow and no go.

Prez, nobody has made this point. If all this good stuff is done by government (you and your pointy-headed libtards in Washington), why haven't you gotten busy doing it so we have a bunch of successful businesses instead of this crappy economy? Either you know how to do it but are trying to hurt the American people, you don't know how to do it and won't give up to someone who at least says he knows how, or you don't know how but expect the American people to vote for you which is the classic definition of insanity: doing the same thing over again and expecting different results.

Regardless of the way that this goes, I would very much like to vote for you this November, as my ex-President. THAT is the position for which you are still unqualified, but it is better than the current one.

"Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success ... "I now know definitively over 9,000 ways that an electric light bulb will not work.

Conservatives Selectively Edit Obama’s Speech

Submitted by alvin on Wed, 07/18/2012 - 5:42pm.

Here's the real speech:
I’m always struck by people who think, well, it must be because I was just so smart. There are a lot of smart people out there. It must be because I worked harder than everybody else. Let me tell you something — there are a whole bunch of hardworking people out there.
If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen. The Internet didn’t get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.
The point is, is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together."
He says no small business builds their own roads.

And this is what he wrote??? Are you serious, Alvin??? That last little half-sentence is supposed to change everything that the Purple-Lipped Punk-Ass Petulant Prick Poser President said before???
And, Alvin - what about Boy Baraka's tone of voice, and his whole snide attitude during this off-the-cuff rant??? Just what we want to hear from our President, huh??? You can tell when he's off teleprompter, because he gets off his rocker as well, and starts showing who he really is - and usually in a way that's not pretty or classy - but this guy wouldn't know class if it hit him between his big Dumbo ears.

And what's even more embarrassing about this little anti-American, anti-Capitism, anti-free market spiel that Boy Baraka made is the fact that HE was copying that dimwit phony-ass psuedo-Indian up there in Mass. Talk about the bland leading the blind!!!

Barack Obama, should know all about not earning what he has

Submitted by ronber on Wed, 07/18/2012 - 8:04pm.

Barack Obama, should know all about not earning what he has:

He receives the royalties for "his" books, but, someone else wrote them for him. The money is, in essence, given to Obama for another's work.

Obama was GIVEN the Nobel Peace Prize for nothing. It's for damn sure he did nothing to earn it. We all notice that he was willing to accept it and the money that came with it.

Barack Obama did not do anything to become President except get on the ballot. It was given to him because of the color of his skin. He did nothing to earn it.

The sole thing Barack Obama has earned through his efforts is the title of hypocrite.

Except not all of the People Government helped were successful. Many People did not have the will to be successful, or the skill to be successful. Most of these People who could not succeed were too lazy to succeed. Most of the lazy People were lazy because they treated their inability to cope with life’s realities with mood enhancing and mind altering drugs.

So, Government took from the resources they gave to help the successful People and gave more to the unsuccessful People. The successful People became less successful. And…

That said, Obama's wording was sloppy and it provided a slam dunk sound bite for the Romney campaign. Fair game in a tight race.

Stop tryin' (Obamaspeak) to make excuses for him - you're embarrassing yourself......................

If the Romney campaign doesn't play this EVERY GOD D**M DAY - along with hundreds of other things that this little Kenyan Kommie has said - then they are stupider than I give them credit for.

Tell me, Jer, if Boy Baraka wins another 4 years (and it WILL be the LAST 4 years that this country will EVER see, set up as it is right now), will you be happy about it??? Will you be proud to be a part of finally killing the USA and turning it into the USSA????

It's a friggin' political campaign. I am saying this notion that Obama was saying business owners don't have anything to do with building their businesses is absolute bullshit. That interpretation contradicts the entire theme of his speech and you should be embarrassed for buying into it.

Eight years ago I heard some looney lefties yelping that re-electing Bush would be the end of America. Guess what? The republic survived. Now I hear the same doomsday garbage from the right about the consequences of another four years of Obama. Well, I'm gonna go out on a limb and predict the republic would survive that as well.

Maybe the sky-is-falling folks--left and right--can find some stretch of land somewhere to hunker down, scream at each other and await the end times. And the rest of the country can get on with its business.

And by the way, those lefties also called Bush every name in the book. It's amazing how much you REAL Americans of the left and the right sound alike.

I'm not the least bit

Submitted by killa37 on Thu, 07/19/2012 - 6:25am.

I'm not the least bit embarrassed for 'buying into' the fact that - once in a blue moon - Boy Baraka actually swerves into some TROOF when he goes off teleprompter. This is exactly WHY his handlers don't want him doing it!!! Now, I WOULD be embarrassed (and also feeling traitorous, as well as delusional) if I had voted for the Kreepy Kenyan the first time and had also proudly admitted that I'm going to do it again!!!

As to Bush - I'm no fan of GWB politically, and I think that he tried to hard to accomodate the left, while allowing them to treat him like a virus, and he spent too much money as part of that, plus - and this may or may not go over with other conservatives or Republicans - I thought (and still think) that the whole Iraq War was a useless and hopeless waste of time, money, energy, and human sacrifiec - for what??? For who??? Those people don't deserve to shine the boots that they threw a Bush. The moooooooooooooooooslems, and especailly in the original tribal and incestuous countries, have a DNA that is different than ours, and it's not up to us to try and change it.

So to your remark about the leftie loonies saying we''d be lost if Bush won - well, they're still saying it, right Jer. Isn't that part of Boy Baraka's list of never-ending excuses?? Bush has 'ruined' our country?- I hear it all the time. I personally have a lot of respect for George Bush - as a man. I can't say the same thing about Barry Baraka, becuase he is the most classless, gutless, useless, and worthless piece of human gargage that I've ever seen in my life at such a position. And the people that surround him are the same.

'The rest of the country can go on with it's business'.....................what world do you live in , Jer? A LOT of the 'rest of the country' is hanging on by a thread, and that thread is torn and frayed, and Boy Baraka and his handlers are the main reason that they're in that position.

I'm guessing that you 'buy into' Baraka's vision of how the USA should look, since you are supporting it. Apparantly the USA that you grew up in doesn't cut it with you anymore..................it's too bad you feel that way - at least to me and millions like me.

And, by the way, I STILL haven't heard anything remotely close to what GWB was constantly called - in the media, or on TV, radio, or in movies, so I'm not buying into your last comment.

That even though they dont keep jobs, even though they dont produce anything worthwhile, that even though they are on food stamps and welfare. Fact is, the commie agitator has no idea what it takes to run anything other then a shakedown.

As far as the claim of infrastructure goes, American Communities paid and built every bit of it. Prosperous businesses and people paid for the bulk of it. Our Government didnt pay one red cent for any of it, and never will. It is the tax payin American public who gets all this credit.

This entire argument is the

Submitted by spiderdan on Thu, 07/19/2012 - 1:26pm.

This entire argument is the biggest load of horse manure liberals have spilled in decades. Any one using the "highways, police, fire, and the military are socialist endeavors" is a complete moron. American society -- as it became more prosperous -- elected to provide services, subsidized by the public sector, that would keep the costs of using any of those services down. If our society didn't provide these services, some private company would. Can you imagine our society if we had to pay to use roads owned by a private citizen or pay a private security company to protect your belongings? It is entirely feasible, but that would create huge problems if the private company decided it didn't want certain segments of society to use their product. We decided to keep certain things accessible to all -- but that doesn't manifest itself into a socialist doctrine or justify the introduction of socialist dogma in every other aspect of American society. Sidewalks in our neighborhoods are publicly provided -- so the liberals can plant signs in my yard while standing on the sidewalk? No, they can't. It is high time to end this stupidity. America must purge these liberals from its primary body politic now. Let them congregate in their enclaves and turn them into bankrupt, third world economies. We can only pray not one cent of money paid by a Texan (or any citizen of a fiscally responsible state) is used to bail out California, Illinois, Michigan, or New York. We can only pray the billions poured into urban centers -- liberal/Democrat bastions -- for failing schools and public housing that serve only as breeding grounds for future prison inmates is redirected to where it will make a real difference. Conservatives want the incapable to be cared for -- liberals embrace and nurture the unwilling among us. Once we make the clear distinction, this madness will end.

I like privately owned aircraft companies, the price is low because there is a lot of them.

Cops well; how much do I pay now, for someone to show up after the crime is committed?

Lots of Government monopolies... Privatize the public schools now....

You are right about the feds funneling money to failure states..

In San Antonio, they keep trying to make roads already paid for, toll roads. If they want toll roads here, they'd better be new ones. :/

The one I'm most familiar with is this brand new (1991)one.. E-470

Ain't that just like a government body to seize an already paid for road and charge for it. A future trend no doubt.
