Media Mourns Lugar Loss as a 'Tragic' Blow to 'Bipartisanship'

ABC’s Good Morning America treated last night’s loss of long-time serving Republican Senator Richard Lugar, to the more conservative Tea Party favorite Richard Mourdock, as a sad sign of the end of bi-partisanship. In the 7am half-hour of Wednesday’s show, ABC’s Josh Elliott declared Lugar’s loss was an “earthquake of great degree” and eulogized Lugar as a senator who was “well-known for his willingness to reach across party lines.” Later on in the 8am half-hour Elliott called Lugar’s loss “a massive political headline” as he reported: “A long time voice of bipartisanship...has been defeated.”

CNN’s Erin Burnett, on last night’s edition of Outfront, also cast the Mourdock victory as a bad omen for Washington, as she worried, “So are the only people willing to find the middle ground disappearing from Washington...This is pretty tragic that we have gotten to this point where working together is a negative thing.” (Video after the jump)

Burnett’s colleague, John Avlon, joined in her hand-wringing as he added: “If you are frustrated with the way Washington isn’t working, with the division and dysfunction this primary is an important reason why. Right now reaching across the aisle to try to solve a problem is a hanging offense in the Republican Party primaries. This RINO-hunting and DINO-hunting is only going to divide us further and to someone like Dick Lugar who's got a record to reach across the aisle that becomes a big bull's eye on his back, we have a problem in America.”

Well before last night’s primary results CBS’s Bob Schieffer, on the May 6 Face the Nation, was concerned about what a Lugar loss would mean for aisle-crossing as he pressed the Wall Street Journal’s Peggy Noonan: “Do you think that the Republican Party has moved too far right for its own good? I mean, when you see the situation that’s happened out in Indiana, where Richard Lugar, who’s probably passed more significant legislation than any single member of the Senate right now, I would say-- that I can think of-- he might actually get beat in the primary because they think he’s not conservative enough?”

The reactions to the result in Indiana are just the latest examples of the liberal media flipping out over the Tea Party replacing long-time serving Republican office-holders with more conservative voices.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

When Utah Republican Bob Bennett went down to defeat in 2010 the New York Times’ David Brooks, on the May 9, 2010 edition of NBC’s Meet the Press, whined: “This is a damn outrage, to be honest...He did something sort of brave by working with Democrats which more Senators should do and now they've been sent a message to him don't do that...Nobody liked the TARP. But we were in a complete economic meltdown and sometimes you have to do terrible things. And we're in a much better economic place because of the TARP. So he bravely cast a vote that nobody wanted to really cast and now he’s losing his career over that. And it's just a damn outrage.”

Not surprisingly, MSNBC’s Chris Matthews probably had the most ridiculous reaction to Tea Party candidates replacing their less conservative opponents, as he compared it to the Stalinist purges in the 1930's. On the April 20, 2010 Hardball, Matthews unleashed the following rant:

Coming up what happens to Republicans who don’t march to the right wing tune? Well they’re getting purged. This is Stalinesque, this stuff...It seems to me we’re getting into something here that I do think is particularly nasty. Chuck says there’s precedence, and there may well be, but here you see a party basically pruning itself. Going around and saying, “Well we really don’t like Arlen Specter. You go find something else to do. Go be a Democrat.” We see this with Charlie Crist perhaps being given the boot. Bob Bennett, a real conservative, getting perhaps the boot out in Utah at some point in this process this year. And then of course John McCain who was the Republican nominee for president last time around. All being treated like, well, you know, like tissue rejection, like “You don't belong here.”

Of course they mourn it! They love a Republican who can be counted on to 'cross the aisle.'

I posted this in the OT, but in case anyone missed it, Weasel Zippers has Lugar's little temper tantrum cleverly disguised as a press release (it's more like an epistle....)

Thanks for posting the link from Weasel Zippers. Lugar's response shows just how clueless he is about what is going on outside of Washington, DC. One of the things that caused his demise is the fact that it was FINALLY brought to the attention of the people of Indiana that he has not actually LIVED in Indiana in over 30 YEARS. So not only is he a RINO, but he really should have been running for Senator from wherever he actually LIVES. I don't know if that is Virginia or Maryland (or maybe DC) but the people of Indiana (flyover country to you, Sen. Lugar) would prefer a Senator who is actually FROM Indiana! They also want a fiscal conservative! I hope the long-term idiots in DC wake up and smell the tea! We may not be happy with Romney, but we sure can still control the outcome of Congressional and Senate races.

The LIB won, but did you hear anything about how this was terrible, it was going to bring less bi-partian fighting, of course not, it does not fit the bill for the news bums to write about that.

Now hear this....

Submitted by c5then on Wed, 05/09/2012 - 3:06pm.

Once the "Neville Chamberlain" RINOs are purged from the Republican party and the leadership is again conservative and proud of it, it will be time for the Democrats to start compromising.

The days of proposing an increase in spending of 10% so that the RINOs would compromise at a 5% increase and call that a 5% cut are almost over. Soon we will be cuting the budget by 10% or more a year and that will be measured from the spending of the previous year.

There will once again be a clear choice between the conservative principles of the Republican Party and the socialist principles of the Democrat Party.

Three points on this

Submitted by Bettendor on Wed, 05/09/2012 - 3:08pm.

1. I wasn't very familiar with Lugar either before last night. As soon as I saw he had been defeated and the news reports were crying about this being "an end to bipartisanship," I looked up his name with the word "RINO" next to it. It gave me quite a few results.

2. Here's the double standard at play here again: When Joe Lieberman left the Democratic Party and became an independent, he was considered a traitor.

3. We very rarely hear about Democrats "reaching across the aisle" unless the Republicans are compromising their principles.

Democrats idea of compromise is for republicans to cave. Dems NEVER compromise. Lugar is a RINO and he has been in Washington too long. He forgot his job was to represent Indiana, not himself. He couldn't even be bothered to live in Indiana !!!! How is that representing his constituents?

Notice to all RINO's, you can no longer get away with campaigning one way and governing another. We are on to you and the alternative media will not cover for you.

Anything that upsets the libs must be good for the country and the conservatives. Glad to see one more RINO gone.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It might be time for Wac-job Democrats to do some "compromising". Lugar has been a Democrat for a long time. It is funny to see the Democrat Media aghast that a true conservative American might be elected to the senate. They just can't figure out how some people maintain their freedom of thought after all the MFM brainwashing for years and years. They are so sad and pathetic. And we must not forget who did what, and who said what. If the nation is restored to a constitutional representative republic, there will be treason charges applied to several media personalities and politicians. It will happen and rightfully so. Not only is the Lugar loss devastating to him, it is a major loss to the media and to Barack Obama. Why one may ask? This primary was and the general election in November will be a referendum on the state controlled media and their backing of Barack Obama. The big winners will be the new media like Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, conservative talk radio, conservative bloggers and the American people in general.

They will never get it because...

Submitted by MacWell on Wed, 05/09/2012 - 5:29pm.

they're career politicians. The only thing they're interested in is their next election. This turn of events has made me have a positive thought about America's future. Maybe Americans will NOT allow America to be "fundamentally transformed". There is hope.

We the people have been taken on an extensive con job for a long time, we made the mistake of trusting people who didn't deserve it, and these people took advantage of that trust. We sent then to Washington DC to speak in our stead, yet we see the steady decline of this country.
To be blunt, it was our fault. We were busy working, raising families, enjoying our leisure time, we thought we sent honorable men to represent us.
We were wrong!
We must not rest though, we must continue to support conservatives across the board. We must rid our Congress of the career politicians who think nothing of trading their votes like baseball cards. Supporting which ever option is best for their careers. They seem to have forgotten that they work for us.
We can fire them.
We MUST fire them if America is to remain the best country in the world. If I were king, I'd round up every communist, socialist, marxist, progressive, of whatever they call themselves today, and ship them all to Cuba, where they'd almost all be much happier.
I know It's a good thing, me not being king, but I've had my fill of students not honoring God and country before class. I'm fed up with the very idea that a Sandra Fluck would have the gaul to sit before Congress with that agenda, and worse, Congress would even hear this drivel. I'm sick of crosses being removed, of American flags being forced down. This is still America, what pos would have a problem with our flag flying, proudly!
I'm 65 years old now, so I've seen a lot. Much of the progress America has made in the world has been good for all mankind. Some of the (progress) has been horrible.

America is at stake folks, it that basic.
America!
Think about that when you vote in November.

Effective Control of the Senate

Submitted by libBuster on Wed, 05/09/2012 - 6:18pm.

To effectively control the Senate, Republicans need a conservative majority. Senators such as Lugar and McCain assured the Democrats that they had effective control over the Senate. The only difference was the committee chairmanships went to Republicans if there were more "R"s than "D"s.

It is time for a conservative Republoican majority.

Mark this date

Submitted by pbthinker on Wed, 05/09/2012 - 10:53pm.

Yes, mark this date because, after the Republicans win control of the Senate, in November, I want to see how much of a call these phonies put out for the Democrats to be bi-partisan. I'm willing to bet that the filibuster and fighting against the majority will, once again, be patriotic action.

They are so morall bankrupt it no longers makes much difference what they say. Lugar was, of course, bi-partisan and out of touch with his constituents, which is why he lost the election. There are some things worth fighting for, he felt that, rather than fight, it was more important to be bi-partisan. The Democrats also knew this and were more than willing to take advantage of him.

One more thing I'm willing to bet on, the Senate will pass a budget next year, not matter who's in the majority, because go along, to get along people like Lugar, will be voted out and the new Republicans won't allow Reid to get away with it again.

Vote Republican - Then you'll only be called a racist one more time.

You do realize what you want and what the Republican voters of Indiana want may not converge. Don't you?

Why Lugar lost - National Review

He had supported the ethanol mandate, backed the Brady Bill, and opposed the Iraq surge. In previous cycles, Republicans had forgiven Lugar his ideological transgressions, but in recent years, he had become more brazen. Not only did Lugar support the DREAM Act; he cosponsored it. Not only did he vote for New START, he spoke forcefully in its favor. True, Lugar wasn’t Arlen Specter — he opposed the stimulus and Obamacare — but his voting record was moderate enough to make him suspect.

And a combination of a poorly run campaign, a credible opponent, and a small, energized electorate sealed his fate.

There is more. It looks like the voters did not set out to toss an elder wise statesmen out just for giggles.

That had nothing to do with my point.

But I'll further answer with a couple of questions: What does the term "running mate" mean to you? Against whom were McCain and Palin running?

Murdock has tons more experience in just about everything, then Obama, (The Vet posted his Resume for YOU) and Lugar for that much, so remind me what he's been doing for the past 35yrs.

So Jer, just how much time does Lugar deserve in DC, how about Pelousy or Read?

Valid point, since when?

" --a first-rate intellect--and perhaps the most knowledgeable and respected authority on international relations and foreign policy in all of Congress--is bounced out by a former geologist turned Indiana state treasurer now Tea Party tool."

And then throw in:

"God help us."

Except for the fact that there is not much of a market for long pig as a comestible; there might well be a bounty on liberals.   :o)

Uncle Jer: ....bounced out by a former geologist turned Indiana state....

I knew next to nothing of this race. But when I look at his biography ---

Principal, R.E. Mourdock and Associates, Limited Liability Company, 2001-present

Executive, Koester Companies, Incorporated, 1984-2000

Senior Geologist, Standard Oil Company, 1979-1984

Field Geologist, AMAX Coal Company, 1975-1979

source

The man was a geologist for 9 years. He has been a businessman for 28. Including running his own company. I expect this kind of crap from JasonC not an Uncle Jer.

Submitted by The Vet on Thu, 05/10/2012 - 8:12am.

The state treasurer catapulted into the national spotlight in 2009 when he sued the Obama administration on behalf of public pensioners for giving preference to the United Auto Workers over bondholders in the Detroit bailout. Not long afterward, members of the state GOP asked him to run for Senate.

His initial reaction: "What did I ever do to you guys?" Mr. Lugar has won re-election by 30 points or more every cycle since 1982. But the consensus among tea partiers and 70% of Indiana county chairmen was that it was time for Mr. Lugar to go.

They presented a litany of grievances, starting with Mr. Lugar's support for the bank bailouts. Then there was his vote for an assault-rifle ban and his defense of earmarks and ethanol. What irked tea partiers the most was his votes to confirm Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan to the Supreme Court, tantamount in their minds to throwing his lot in with liberal activists.

Hell, that irked ME.

Lesson plan boys and girls. Always keep the WSJ close when dealing with liberals trying to confuse the issues.

Submitted by The Vet on Thu, 05/10/2012 - 8:21am.

More from that article ---

The senator has retaliated with ads accusing Mr. Mourdock of having "sold out to D.C. outsiders." Mourdock victory could put a safe Republican Senate seat in play this fall. Democrats, the argument goes, can paint him as "extreme" for wanting to eliminate the Departments of Energy, Commerce, Education, and Housing and Urban Development, as they did two years ago with Republican candidates Sharron Angle in Nevada and Christine O'Donnell in Delaware.

"I hope they do," Mr. Mourdock laughs. Being defined as a small government extremist, he thinks, works to his advantage.

He can articulate conservative principles and make the moral argument for lower taxes, less spending and scaled-back entitlements. Unemployment benefits, he says, are "becoming a lifestyle" that are "changing the work ethic of Americans" and are "a dangerous thing for our economy."

Aw hell boys and girls. I'M MOVIN' TO INDIANA! Join me!

Shame on you Uncle Jer. Shame.

1) Some malicious people used

Submitted by lgeubank on Thu, 05/10/2012 - 10:09am.

1) Some malicious people used to refer to Harry S. Truman as "a former haberdasher." That kind of cheap sneer proves nothing. Being a geologist is a respectable role in society -- better than being a worthless Democrat parasite.

2) We Republicans prefer to choose candidates we want, who are in accord with our political and social views. And if any punk liberal trolls don't like our choice, then "Sucks to you."

Yeah, Igeubank...

Submitted by Jer on Thu, 05/10/2012 - 3:11pm.

"Former haberdasher" was a term of endearment compared to the subsequent charges of treason malicious Republican punks leveled at Harry Truman. But spare me the juvenile ad hominems, sport. I didn't demean geologists or state treasurers. It was simply a comparison of resumes between the candidates and an expression of my opinion--and I am confident the view of many on both sides of the aisle--that the Senate is losing a valuable voice in the foreign policy arena.

Biden & Lugar were the Senate's "experts" on foreign policy.

I'd rather have a neophyte like Allen West on matters of state than either of those two.

Good riddance to bad rubbish.

The fact that liberals in the media, as well as those here, are gnashing their teeth and pulling their hair over Lugar getting primaried makes me very, very happy. And as to the media prognosticators, who think the Dems have a chance at that seat......dream on!

Barry's going down. No coat tails, no nothing. It's going to make 2010 look like a nice little rain shower in comparison to the gush of Tea Party conservatives who are going to gain office in 2012.

So...Stalin's a bad guy to

Submitted by RR GOP on Thu, 05/10/2012 - 12:29am.

So...Stalin's a bad guy to the Left now?

These Libtard producers, directors and documentarians crank out Hitler/Nazi films at about a 50:1 ratio compared to what has ever been produced about Stalin.

Hitler is equated with nationalism, thus patriotism, militarism and conservatism which magically can be applied to American conservatives, but I guarantee that 90% of the people in this country don't even know that the Nazis were themselves Socialists.

Basically the Liberals have been very successful in squelching the socialist aspects of Nazism/Fascism and still treat Uncle Joe like a beloved ally in the war against evil that our "greatest generation" fought.

Start spouting some kind of dictatorial platitudes or engage in totalitarian behavior and NO one's going to call you a "Stalin".

"Under Capitalism, man exploits man.  Under Communism it's just the opposite."

"All that Communism needs to make it successful is for someone to feed and clothe it."
