Oscar Host Billy Crystal Plans to Mock GOP 'Idiots' in Telecast? (Updated)

Actor Billy Crystal returns to his Oscar hosting duties this Sunday night and not surprisingly he plans on continuing the liberal Hollywood tradition of mocking Republicans during the show. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly the star of My Giant made clear his intentions to have fun at the Republican candidates' expense as he snarked: "How funny are these idiots?"

The following is the relevant portion of the online edition of the Entertainment Weekly article dated February 22, 2012:

"And he reveals that, while he won't make any jokes in the show about the controversial 'rehearsal's for fags' remark that led Oscar producer Brett Ratner to step down in November ('Rehearsals are for gags,' he says, deadpan), he does intend to use this year's heated presidential campaign as fodder for comedy: 'How funny are these idiots?' he says. 'There will be something that will filter into it.'"

Full EW story here.

EDITOR'S NOTE: MRC's Scott Whitlock reports the print version (not available online) shows the actual, longer Crystal answer shows a more reasonable and sensitive answer. What's wrong with the PopWatch blog that they can't run this reasonable answer online?

EW: There's obviously a heated presidential campaign going on this year. Will that work its way into the show?

Crystal: Well, how funny are these idiots? There will be something that will filter into it. But you've got a big part of the country that likes one of these guys, and you don't want to be offensive. This is a pretty passionate year for [politics]- and it's been a hard couple of years for the audience. You don't want them to go, "Oh, here's a smart-ass from Hollywood making fun of us."

It succinctly captures the ever-shrinking career & stature of crystalline William, now needing a step-ladder to reach the top of the Oscar statue.

Who cares? The REAL

Submitted by tcm14 on Fri, 02/24/2012 - 3:07pm.

Who cares? The REAL celebrities in my world are at Newsbusters, Big Hollywood, Fox News, Fox Business Network, etc. I don't know who any of these other fools even are. I mean, I appreciate a good movie as much as the next guy, but I sure don't worship anyone in the film or involved in the making of the film.

This is one reason why hes washed-up! His "schtick" the last few years, no matter what role he has-and there are barely any coming his way lately-or what talk show he pops in on, or interviews he gives, is that he plays the lib card, and all he does is rip Republicans, esp Pres Bush, and not only give a pass to Ear Leader, but fawn all over him!

If he does this during the show, I swear it will be the last one I watch!

I know Billy, using the

Submitted by winston smith on Fri, 02/24/2012 - 5:40pm.

I know Billy, using the Oscars to trash Republicans is great cover for the ridiculous failure of the Obama administration. Lampooning the Republicans will at best, put a tiny band-aid on this big boo-boo of a President. But don't think Oscar viewers aren't smart enough to see through your transparent charade. The people watching the Oscars will still wake up the morning after without jobs courtesy of Obama who is proactively destroying heavy industries and energy based production throughout the U.S and disintegrating the thousands of potential jobs that go along with them. These people won't really care about or even remember your childish little tirades against the GOP. Maybe Billy should focus his barbed comments at his own dumbass comrades in Beverly Hills like Aston Kucher, Paris Hilton, Megan Fox, Susan Sarandon ("the pope is a nazi"), Alec Baldwin, seems like every time Matt Damon moves his lips these days nothing but pure leftwing idiocy spews forth.

Over dressed self important

Submitted by okie-pastor on Fri, 02/24/2012 - 7:47pm.

Over dressed self important liberals patting themselves on the back and getting Big laughs from liberal audience at the expense of those "funny idiots". Then a "controversial" moment that gets news for 24 hours, maybe more depending on how "edgy" it was. Yawn. And life goes on.

I'm really surprised anyone enjoys this stuff. It's disappointing Fox gives them the coverage they do. I just don't get it?

I had not planned to watch the Oscars this year and now for sure I will not watch them!

I have lost all respect for Crystal, not that I had any before.

P.S. Last time I watched some Indian woman accepted for Marlon Brando. That was what turned me off from watching them since.

I think the last time I watched

Submitted by nolefan2 on Sat, 02/25/2012 - 12:11pm.

the Oscars was right after the Pilgrims landed on Plymouth Rock.....well not THAT long ago, but it WAS so long ago, I can't remember who won for what movie. I do know that some people in this country are way off base when they spend so much time worshiping people who make a living pretending to be something they are not. I loved the comment about them reading scripts that someone else wrote for them. Perhaps that is why Duh One loves them so much.....after all he makes a living reading from a teleprompter that which was written by someone else.

We never watch the Oscars or any of the award shows. BORING!

Submitted by drsamherman on Sat, 02/25/2012 - 12:30pm.

During my six decades of life, I may have seen a total of 10 minutes of award show programs during my lifetime, and usually on re-runs. I did watch a re-run of Helen Mirren's acceptance speech for "The Queen" back when. I did like Miss Mirren (who was not a very big Royalist at the time) and the way she thanked Queen Elizabeth II for her years of devotion to her people and her service and sense of duty. Contrast that to the ignorant slobbering of Sean Penn or any of the other frothing diatribe of Hollyweirdos over the years and we would rather pass.

On Oscar night, we will be showing old John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara movies. You can't beat Duke Wayne and that red-headed Irish ball of fire!
